Narated by Fess Parker who was a Disney Favorate, who portrayed Davy Crocket and Jeff York who was Mike Fink in Davy Crocket and Joe Crain in Andy Bernett. The Cast also included Iron Eyes Cody, who was later famous as the Indian with the tear in his eye, Iron Eyes made a career of portraying Indians, claiming to be a Cherokee when he was actually an Italian American actor. As is common they make the Pawnee Indians the Bad Guys, as was also done in Dances With Wolves, and Little Big Man, while in reality the Pawnee were so prayed upon by larger tribes like the Lakota and Cheyanne that they allied with the white settlers and often came to their rescue driving off attacks by the hostile Lakota. I remember seeing the film when i was a boy back in the 1950s. Back in thoes days TV and movies taught kids to be proud of their history and heritage.

RIGHT i've watched the first six episodes of enterprise (five if the two-part pilot only counts as one) and i have things to say. take all of them with a pinch of salt bc ive only just started it but i have a sneaking sense that it will continue in much the same fashion.
first of all the backswing from ds9 + voyager's first black captain and first female captain is TANGIBLE. to quote eleanour "girlboss" guthrie-blacksails so many goddamn (white) men here!!! too many goddamn (white) men here!!! not only are they white men, archer and trip specifically are Cowboys in the most "we clearly want to write a classic western" sense. if i closed my eyes and listened to a scene with just the two of them i wouldn't be able to distinguish it from firefly, a show where they purposefully put on cowboy voices because apparently space westerns were all the rage in 2001-2002.
t'pol is really the only woman i would call a main rather than supporting character and her role thus far seems to be emulating the nagging sitcom wife, in that she naysays everything, gets utterly disregarded, is proven right by the end of the episode, and then is immediately disregarded again next episode. i find the idea of vulcans intentionally curtailing human progress into space and humans rebelling against that really interesting, but i hate the way the casting and direction turns space travel into this gung-ho boys will be boys situation because even though t'pol is right, she's being Framed as a killjoy in such a gendered way.
back to the western thing - i watched a Lot of 50s' and 60s' westerns as a child and out of the five episodes of enterprise i've seen so far, three have used tropes or stock situations directly from westerns with the worst offender being s1e6 terra nova. i was fucking gobsmacked by that episode like it was BLATANT. the fact that most of their outdoor scenes are probably filmed in california which is where a lot of westerns are filmed by pure hollywood convenience probably doesn't help, but it's really evident in the writing as well. i remember reading that the original series wanted to take the western frontier into space and make a "wagon train to the stars" and it feels like enterprise decided to go all the way back to that concept and do it far, far less subtly.
of course the problem with this is that rather than engage with the politics of that genre and how they've influenced the formation of star trek (is the federation an imperialist entity? is starfleet a colonialist military? etc) it feels so far that enterprise is just having a great time playing uncritical cowboys and aliens, completely erasing indigenous people from the narrative of westward expansion or replacing them with the non-human which. fucking sucks!!
the fact that t'pol is constantly getting racially harassed and abused as the only vulcan aboard, the fact that hoshi is inexperienced with combat and space travel so its always the men doing the action scenes, the fact that travis is the youngest and least ranking officer on the bridge and the fact that enterprise was "rick berman's baby" are all adding up to a conscious agenda of putting white men at the forefront of trek again.
if i'm wrong about any of this i would love to hear from people who've watched further than me! i dont mind about spoilers i've already had loads

NO TURNING BACK
by Veryl Goodnight
Too young and naive to think they could fail Too full of visions for the end of the trail They stored their silk dresses and donned calico To join in the cry of Westward Ho
Their diaries tell of the endless hours The vast sea of grass and bounty of wildflowers They tell of children conceived and born And of those who were buried in the gray silent morn
Still the wagons rolled on and the ruts got deeper The column moved westward as the route got steeper Teams dropped from exhaustion in the summer heat As the emigrants pressed on defying defeat
They met Indians who were friends and many that were foe They saw days of drought and blinding snow Only one thing was certain along this wagon track. There was absolutely No Turning Back
(Taken at Frontier Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming)

This movie starts off bad and gets worse as it goes along.  Indigenous peoples try to buy a little white girl and only stop when Whitey McWhiteGuy saves an indigenous boy with the power of whiteness.  It’s a lot.

Y'all are a hard act to follow, but I'll try my best. Thank you to @facewithoutheart, @you-remind-me-of-the-babe, @fatalfangirl, @otherworldsivelivedin, @takitalks, @urban-sith, @prettylightsbigcity, @confused-bi-queer, and @tea-brigade for the tags, I feel very loved. And y'all are brilliant, it's been so much fun reading your snippets tonight!
So, in honor of all the tags, I'll give you six sentences from each of my WIPs 😏. Under the break because this post is huge. (Also a lil spicy)
From Back to Start (Next chapter posting tomorrow!), my magickal mishap fic, where Simon magics Baz into a baby (don't worry, they're nearly the same age at this point in the story):
“May I ask what has prompted this sudden epiphany?” He asks, his voice slow and careful.
I struggle with myself; he’s got all the power here. He could crush my heart beneath his very expensive trainers. But if I’m right…well, isn’t it worth it?
“I think I fancy you,” I whisper.
From Westward Son, my SnowBaz on the Oregon trail COTTA entry:
My heart speeds up when I see my first pioneer. She’s dressed in typical homespun, but her hair, wrapped in braids around her head, is black as a crow’s wing. And when she turns to face us, I see the warm color of her skin and the snapping black of her eyes, and I can’t help but smile in relief. This is the wagon train we were looking for.
I wave and give my friendliest smile, calling out, “Ho, the wagons! Can we speak with you?”
She stares at me, her face unreadable, before giving one short, sharp nod.
From The Watford Games, my Hunger Games AU:
He’s gone back to staring blankly into the distance again. I’ve already made the executive decision: we aren’t going out there today. Simon needs time to recover, to—process, I suppose. I’m going to feed us, and then I’m going to douse the lights and wrap myself around him again. Then I’m going to tell him, over and over again, that he did what he had to do, that he’s not bad or evil or wrong. I’ll say it until he believes me, even if it takes my lifetime to accomplish.
From A Fucked-up Cinderella Story, my Erotic Gropefest Entry warning, spicy, mention of biting):
“Baz!” I grunt, still thrusting into him, desperately chasing the completion that won’t come. “You have to bite me!”
His eyes, which had drifted closed in his satisfaction, pop open. “No!” he snarls. “I told you! I won’t!”
I can’t help it; a sob escapes me.
I'm not sure who's left to tag, lol! It's nearly midnight anyways, so I'll tag all of youse above for Wednesday, as well as @annabellelux, @bazzybelle, @bloodiedpixie, @captain-aralias, @caitybug, @dragoneggo, @fight-surrender, @heyyyandrea, @im-gettingby, @jasonfunderberkerthefrogexists, @moodandmist, @palimpsessed, @skee3000

Ok first of all I want to make clear that english is not my first language. I therefore apologize in advance for any grammar or spelling mistakes. Please don't be too strict with me =D
I recently bought Disney+ and I plan now to watch and review every movie, Disney has ever produced or participated in it. And I tell you, this will be a hell of a trip, because my list now contains no fewer than 701 movies. That means if I watch at least one movie every day, it will take me about 2 years to see all of them. And since I will most likely not watch a movie every day, I will definitely need at least twice as long....
For the films on my list, which I marked with a cross at the end, it means that I have seen them already. However, since I last saw most of these movies in my childhood or teenage years (so at least 15 years ago), it will be interesting for me to rewatch them after such a long time. I have probably already forgotten most of the plots.
I also plan to watch them in chronological order and rank them. The movies that I don't find on Disney+ I will watch somewhere else.
Here is the list: (The films follow the chronological order in which they were published. However, it is quite possible that I accidentally swapped a few. But I think most of it is accurate).

Gentle Nudging
Acts 12:25-13:3
While they were ministering to the Lord—fasting, singing, teaching, witnessing, and praying—the Holy Spirit said, "Okay, hitch up the wagons, fellas . . . westward, ho! I need Barnabas and Paul for the work to which I have called them."
Can you imagine how some would react today? "You can't be serious. You're gonna take two of the five chefs and send them to another joint? We'll starve! You're gonna reach down in our ranks and pull two of the best adult fellowship teachers we've got and move them to some distant mission field? That's two-fifths of our leadership. We can't let these guys slip through our fingers!"
But none of that occurred in Antioch. As soon as those folks realized it was the Spirit of God who was sending them on, they released them. And the change occurred (don't miss this!) "while they were ministering." It didn't happen in a lull, when giving was way down, or during a period of leadership transition. God lifted these men from that exciting setting while the church was at its zenith, steaming ahead full-bore. People were coming by the cartload, deep needs were being met, souls were being saved, lives were being transformed, families were getting healthy, the place was electric! Still, the Spirit said, "It's time for change." Who would've ever imagined? But God is full of surprises, since He sees the big picture while we focus mainly on the here and now.
It was God's way of telling Barnabas and Paul it was time to move. By the way, the Lord did the speaking. In those days the Lord revealed Himself in a number of ways. Today, I believe He speaks to us through His Word, through the gentle nudging of the Spirit, and through the collective witness of His people. Then it may have been in a night vision, or during a time while the disciples were praying, meditating on the Scriptures, or while fasting. A couple of the leaders sensed the Lord's leading in a new direction. Others verified the voice. The Lord said, in effect, "I have work for two of you to do elsewhere. Not all of you, only two, and My plan is best. Release Barnabas and Paul. They are the two I'm calling elsewhere."
Westward, ho!

WWTD 225 - Westward Ho, the Wagons!: Iron Eyes Oscar de Corti
After two hundred and twenty five episodes, it appears we are only just getting to our first proper Disney western. Sure, we've seen movies with cowboys and frontier living, but most of those cowboys are played by people like Don Knotts. WESTWARD HO, THE WAGONS! is a movie with a lot of punctuation, but even more classic trappings of the western genre...and not all of them good (bet you can guess which ones based on the poster alone). It's not all bad though - the infinitely watchable Fess Parker is here to soothe our viewing, along with his golden voice and stoic, comforting presence. And nobody on this particular wagon train taking the Oregon Trail dies of dysentery...at least on-screen.
Download the episode.

Review #38: The Light in the Forest
Post #42
8/4/2020
Next up is 1958′s The Light in the Forest
Tumblr media
Enjoyment : [1]
Watching this movie feels like pissing blood. Watching it actively gave me a throbbing headache I was so furious with it. There is almost nothing enjoyable about this garbage and I actively think lesser of people who defend it. The issue is that the entire premise of the movie is racist and hateful so you can never get on board with the story unless you are also racist and hateful. The story is about a boy named True Son who was adopted by a tribe of Native Americans. Due to a treaty he is forced to return to his biological family where is then tortured and brainwashed until he finally acts ‘white enough’ for their approval. Even if True Son is ethnically white, he was raised by a loving Native family and this movie acts like none of that matters. From the first frame the moral of this movie is “The Races don’t mix, stay with your own kind” and it boils my brain to try and think why Disney thought this was ok.
Quality : [1]
The filmmaking is fine. Camera, lighting, sets, costumes, it probably would have gotten a 4 if the plot was anything other than the shit show it turned out to be. Because the writing is so unbelievably hateful this movie gets a 1. The reason this devalues the quality of the movie as a whole, is that the way scenes are structured is now fundamentally flawed. The writing tries to frame the racist white cultists as villains, but then also does nothing to refute them. The racist villains say something racist, True Son looks sad, and the film moves on like there is nothing else to be said. You can’t possibly write likable character when they are just awful from start to finish. Besides some musical stings, there is nothing behind the camera to display that these racists are wrong, if anything I think the framing supports their arguments and it ends up ruining everything.
Hold up : [0]
The second ever 0 given on this blog, and boy does this movie deserve it. I have already gone over how hateful the core premise is. A ‘respectable white family’ tries to ‘tame a savage native’ because ‘this is where he belongs!’ It is lazy, stupid and spiteful writing. However, what makes this movie truly awful is the ‘both sides!’ angle it tries to push and utterly fails at. The opening scene has the Native chieftain arguing with a British general. The Chieftain says that the British troops have been raping and killing men, women and children that were not part of any war party, to which the general snaps “Yeah but they only killed the civilians because they were scared of facing your savage warriors.” and then they just moves on like that was a fair answer to those accusations. You cannot compare the violence the Natives committed against the Pioneers to the violence the Pioneers committed against the Natives. One side was an invading army and the other was made up of civilians defending their home. Whenever a scene tries to ‘both-sides’ the argument it just sounds like “Why do the people we keep killing say they don’t want us to kill them? That’s so rude of them!” Fuck off movie this is pathetic and you know it. This movie is also truly horrible in its depiction of adoptive families. Despite the fact that True Sons Native family knew him most of his life and provided nothing but stability, the movie frames his racist, abusive biological family as his ‘true family’ since being related by blood trumps everything else. Like honestly fuck that, adopted families ARE real families regardless of race.  On a final absurd note, as if this movie couldn’t get any worse, the final conflict revolves around True Son fighting his uncle, who has been shown to not only be a racist murderer, but also an attempted rapist. And yet, True Son explicitly states he is going to fight his Uncle not because he is evil, but because “he wants to prove his is a white man and wants to earn his respect.” Yeah I am sure the respect of a monster like that is really that important to True Son. Go rot in hell Disney.
Risk : [2]
This movie is once again drenched in the sloppy discharge of American Exceptionalism and Manifest Destiny. I have already gone into detail about how horrible the ‘both-sides’ argument is since it paints the past as an inevitable conflict where the genocide of the Natives was just an unfortunate side effect. The only reason this movie doesn’t get a lower score in terms of risk, is that there WAS actually some attempt to humanize the Natives. They are shown to have complex inner lives and for the most part True Son remains steadfast in his refusal to give up his upbringing. He still ends up ‘turning white’ by the end but his determination made him the only likable character. Even though it was handled poorly, this movie actually acknowledged the existence of the Native genocide rather than painting over it like Westward Ho, The Wagons! did.

There was one scene that actually was fun to watch. After True Son has been pushed around by his awful family for most of the movie, he is reunited with one of his Native cousins and it is genuinely joyful. The two wrestle and run around laughing, just happy to be in each others company. It made me smile and I hate that it didn’t lead into True Son going home to be with the family that actually loves him. If this movie had the balls to pick a side, this could have been a really wonderful moment, but spoilers: It wasn’t.
Final thoughts:
This is easily the worst movie on this list so far. Worse than the true life documentaries and worse than Peter Pan. It has been a long time since I sat through a movie that I could describe as ‘genuinely hateful.’ You get the feeling that the people who made this movie actually hated Native Americans and set out to intentionally demonize another race. I didn’t even get around to talking about the bland love interest who ‘fixes’ True Son with love because as we all know the best way to cure racism is good old fashioned heterosexual marriage. The best way to sum up this movie is with this simple fact. The main characters name is True Son, but his biological parents want to call him “Johnny” The scene were he meets his biological mother for the first time, instead of hugging, or getting to know each other, the mother simply says. “Your name is Johnny, you won’t leave this room until you say your name and act like a civilized gentleman.” Her concerns are not about True Sons mental wellbeing or safety, she just wants him to act ‘white’ so SHE is comfortable. There is ZERO love between them and yet the movie frames this like a heartfelt reunion between long lost family. After this scene, no one calls him True Son anymore, not even his love interest. They all call him Johnny and it has the same vibe as a someone getting dead-named over and over until they finally submit. I hate this movie and what is worse, I don’t think this will be the worst movie I’ll watch by the end of this project. God help me, this movie took years off my life. If I have to watch something this bad again I will dig up Walt myself and beat his zombie ass senseless.

Edit: I would like to make a minor note about this movie. It is implied through dialogue that True Son was not adopted by kidnapped by the Native Americans. Which does make his biological families desire to bring him home understandable... HOWEVER: The way the movie is shot and written, it is clear that True Son is happy and treated as an equal while in the tribe, and he is emotionally abused the moment he is brought into the white town.  While he was not adopted in the text of the movie, it is clear that the movie frames and interprets True Son as an adopted child being ‘saved’ by his biological family. Either way Disney did a crappy job with this movie.
