QZGS Rare Pair Week Day 3: Peak 🌄
Sometimes, Wang Jiexi thinks exasperatedly about how magical his life has become, and then he realizes that there isn't anything more magical than what has always been there. As always, Ye Xiu, his familiar, is there to witness it with him.
A continuation to my old Modern with Magic - Witches and Familiars AU which, uh, I still have to post here sometime too…

Okay, dollblr, I need your help
My friend's doll collection was stolen on May 19th by his shitty landlord. Charges have been filed, but the landlord and the moving company he used to transport the dolls and other stolen property have been uncooperative in giving the information needed to trace and recover the dolls.
I'm asking that this post be shared as far and wide as possible so he has some hope of getting his most beloved and distinctive dolls back.
If anyone sees a massive dump of Ringdolls and Dollfie Dreams on Mercari, eBay, or Facebook, especially in/around/from the Louisville, KY area, please contact me so I can let him know.
I will update as we assess the full extent of the loss, but the dolls we're asking people to keep an eye out for at the moment are
Ringdoll K fullset edition with attached hair, NS. No outfit. Distinctive features: One magnet fell out and was put back in back upside down, so his headcap doesn't stay closed.
DIM Minimee Ruki head, NS. Distinctive features: Vampire mod.
Custom House Mina (both Saint Mina and LE Sad Mina), NS
Ringdoll Quiz, GS, fullset
Bobobie Pixie. Distinctive features: sky blue skin that yellowed to a minty color. Probably wearing green pajamas with brown airplanes made by me.
ResinSoul Yao, WS. His first doll, probably yellowed a fair bit by now. Distinctive features: a small chip on one of her horns.
DIM Minimee heads of all Gazette and Dir En Grey members. If these turn up as a lot, contact us, it's probably them.
Soom Dain
Soom Dawn
2 60cm Sweetdolls, NS
HZ WangYe head
This ResinSoul Dai and 1st gen Bobobie Apollo, probably still in these outfits
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Any dolls that appear in a large group with these should be reported.
I will update tomorrow with more specifics on the missing Ringdolls and DD/DD mods when we've had a chance to sit down and assess the extent of the theft.
@okamikodomo @fullyfunctionalminiaturebeehive @buffdolls @laptopcoffee @lupusdarkmoon @lordhigheverythingelse @nyxypixie @freakstylebjd @literally anyone and everyone we've ever met in this community
Thank y'all in advance for any help, he's gutted over this and I am on his behalf. Still in shock that there are people this vile in the world.

The Legend of ShenLi (与凤行, Yu Feng Xing native title) episode 26 spoilers below.
AUGH the level of detail in the script! It truly makes a difference when a good novelist is the one who puts the script together for a drama because *chef's kiss* to the detail I missed in EP 26.
From what I understand in Chinese, adding an A' in front of someone's name is an extra sign of affection. If their name is Fengyin, for example, leaving out the Feng part and calling them A'Yin means you have a certain close relationship (could be friends, family, lovers, etc).
Up until EP 26, XingZhi has always called her Bicang Wang (title), Wangye (title), and when he's feeling a widdle brave, by her name, ShenLi. (Sorry not sorry but he's forever a Simp Loser to me lolol meant with all the fondness.)
But when he finally finds her by the sea after believing her to be dead? Xingzhi calls her A'Li for the first time, acknowledging the affection in his heart for her.
Zingzhi : she's *so* important to me now and I shall call her by what is proper. she is my A'Li.
Good for him.
Goddamn I'm so single and yet watching this show and reading MM romances lmaoooo

Follower Recs

Hi! I'd like to make some WIP recs (fair warning, MDZS fandom turned me into a time travel fix-it fanatic so that's what these are). LQR centric focusing on Lan sect intrigue with adorable baby Lans. @ck90
An Old Fool
by StarClearWaters (Readoutloud)
T, WIP, 32k, Wangxian
Summary: He has come to bitterly resent his younger self for the rash decision of his younger days, both for his brother, his sister-in-law and for his nephews. To keep one from a good man because he was not decorous enough and to entrust his other to a viper because the man knew how to be polite and gracious. No, he is a fool- An Old fool but still young enough to have the ability to support and care for his family. He is old but he has learned and he will not make the same mistake again.
~*~
Immortal Hanguang-jun & the Demon of Yunmeng. Smutastic & squeeworthy. @ck90
Time and Time Again
by Jammingjackelopes
M, WIP, 115k, Wangxian
Summary: "Ascend," Wei Wuxian whispered to Lan Wangji. His husband’s shining tears dripped over their hands. "It might take awhile, but the pain of my passing will eventually fade. Ascend, and forget about me." "No," Lan Wangji said, resolute. "I will never forget Wei Ying. Not in this lifetime, or any other lifetime. Together, forever, or none at all." "Play me our song," Wei Wuxian responded, eyes closed.

A Life Without Regrets
by naqaashi
M, WIP, 74k, Wangxian
Summary: After his death at the first siege of the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian is thrown back in time to when he was nine years old, just before Jiang Fengmian took him to Lotus Pier with its tumultuous affection and unpayable mountain of debts. He decides to take the second chance he has been offered, to live freely and without regrets. As it turns out, a life without regrets involves: 1. Avoiding all attempts to be adopted so you can launch your career as a rogue-cultivating-assassin, while 2. Juggling a hit-list comprised of the cultivation world’s Who’s Who, and 3. Desperately missing your not-boyfriend who picked the worst ever timing to confess his undying love for you. Murder and mayhem to follow.
~*~
One of my favorite WIP
Wilful Blindness ≠ Ignorance
by Cy_an_Blue
E, WIP, 59k, Wangxian
Summary: It feels like a lifetime, but it's only been little more than 3 years since the Massacre of Lotus Pier and the start of the Sunshot Campaign. Wei Wuxian is no longer the bright promising young Omega of Lotus Pier. Lan Wangji is no longer Emperor Qingheng-Jun's spare heir. They've been so many things over such a strange period of time, to return to what they once were is... not possible. But maybe they can figure out a way to compromise... together. Welcome to the love story between the Wen's Imperial Concubine Wei Guifei and the Lan Empire's Imperial Wangye; Hanguang-Wang.

WIP Snip!
Thanks to @yletylyf for the tag! (Lety I am making eyes at your snip just so you know.)
I uh, have been buried under a number of #Works for exchanges, as is my typical nature, but I did find time to work on an original work recently!
This one is for one of @marquisguyun's requests for my OW Cdrama Inspired Kinkmeme, called Third Watch Rain.
"Why?" he asks, smiling in that slightly self-deprecating way of his, "because I'm married? Or for some other reason you are too polite to tell me to my face, Haitang?"  Married men across the country took concubines all the time. But Qiu Haitang came from the Liangshan Qiu and was not raised to become a rich man's concubine.  And if being a concubine was bad, she would never be a man's mistress either, no matter how blue his blood.  "Wangye," she says, after a silence. "Would you be truly satisfied with such a thing?"
😔it is a truth universally acknowledged that I might have a 'wangye' kink. It's fine.
Tagging @marquisguyun, @evakant, @shadaras, @thebiscuiteternal, and anyone else who sees this and wants to play! (idk who currently has ongoing wips, if you see this and have wips you want to share about please assume I tagged you!!! I want to see snippets of things!! :D)

Nirvana in Fire Episode Three
Events:
MCS promises Jingyan he will find a way to rescue Tingsheng.
Mu Qing sends a guy to fight MCS; Meng Zhi interrupts.
Meng Zhi comes to visit MCS at night.
The marriage tournament continues and everyone is very concerned about Baili Qi.
We hear the story of Jingrui's birth.
MCS is appointed to judge the written part of the marriage tournament. He attends a court banquet.
Jingrui tries to beat up Baili Qi at the banquet and fails.
Names and titles:
Prince Yu refers to Yujin as Yujin.
Mu Qing calls Nihuang ‘jie’, usually in a drawn-out whine.
Baili Qi is politely referred to as xiansheng by MCS and ‘warrior’ by others.
Mu Qing calls Jingrui Jingrui and Jingrui calls him ‘xiao wangye’.
There's a bit of untranslatable stuff with the emperor granting MCS the right to use different pronouns at court.
Costumes:
Jingrui and Yujin carry their swords in their hands.
Baili Qi wears armor and this is not considered unfair.
MCS doesn’t dress up for the Emperor, he’s wearing the same clothes he wears all episode.
Nihuang carries a whip while strolling round the palace.
Characters:
Nihuang stands and watches Tingsheng get beaten and only intervenes at the mention of Yue-guifei.
Fei Liu is stealthy enough that Mu Qing’s man attacks MCS without knowing he’s there.
Meng Zhi must already be married or otherwise unsuitable or he would be suggested as a solution to the Baili Qi problem.
Master Zhuo (head of Tianquan Manor, Jingrui's other father) is number four in the Langya list of fighters.
Time:
There was a battle in Yunnan at Chingming River two years ago.
Meng Zhi was in the Chiyan army for only a year.
Yujin is one year younger than Jingrui.
At the time of Jingrui’s birth the Zhuo had just taken over Tianquan.

A Savory Assortment of Fic Recs Part 1
A list of fics from various fandoms where I have not collected enough entries to justify giving them their own post. Included here you will find fics for Word of Honor and Grave Robber's Chronicles (DMBJ)
Word of Honor
within us an orchard by mintyfish (guckindieluft)
On a visit to the capital, the Valley Master happens upon the garden of a man who has nothing left to live for.
The Tiger and its Skin by manic_intent
The pale beauty on the bed swallowed the bowl of medicine without complaint and handed it silently to the eunuch by the bed. Leaning dizzily against the wall, Zhou Zishu fought yet another bout of nausea, trying to keep down the thin congee that he’d forced down his throat in the morning.
“Wangye,” the eunuch, Qiu Bin, said, sounding uncomfortable.
“Leave.” Zhou Zishu closed his eyes.
“Just… your bride should be on the way. Since the Emperor has refused to postpone the wedding—”
The Parasol Tree by chiiyo86
When Prince Jin sends Zhou Zishu to look for the Glazed Armor, Zhou Zishu's heart isn't in it but he is duty-bound to see this mission through to the end. But then his path crosses the one of Wen Kexing, a mercurial scholar with many secrets of his own, and things only get more complicated from there.
Strays. by orange_crushed
Zishu's mind has been trained to this sort of work: to take in every meaningless detail and produce from that the truth. To assess danger and opportunity alike. Of course, this is a misuse of his talents. Kexing shouldn't concern him. He should be nothing to Zishu: just another foolish boy to mold into a useful weapon, or else to discard. But then, Zishu has seen what's really inside him, the pitiless tiger who lives in his guts. And he might be the only one who has. Kexing let the other boys off with bruises, didn't he?
He is Zishu's, somehow. As much as anything has ever been.
[AU timeline in which teenage runaway Wen Kexing meets career assassin Zhou Zishu and upends both their lives.]
Soulmates and Zombies by nerdyjellyfish
It's WenZhou modern AU with zombies. That's it that's the fic.
Sanguine by jaemyun
Zhou Zishu is ready to be done with Tian Chuang. He's ready for his seventh nail, and ready to wander before facing his eighty one brothers with a bowed head in the afterlife. He will do this after, apparently, one last mission that's simply too intriguing to pass up.
The Ghost Valley has sent a letter past its borders, asking to attend the Heroes Conference of the Five Lakes Alliance. The Five Lakes Alliance, unbelievably, has accepted. Both no doubt have hidden intentions, and Prince Jin wants eyes and ears on the scene. Zhou Zishu can't quite bring himself to deny his own ravenous curiosity enough not to accept.
The stunning beauty that shows up with the girls of the Department of the Unfaithful, the one who introduces himself as Wen Kexing, is universally assumed to be a favorite plaything of the yet unseen Ghost Valley Master. His beauty and charm may be enough to captivate all the others into underestimating him, but Zhou Zishu knows a killer's eyes when he sees one. Wen Kexing is a puzzle he'd like to figure out, and Zishu himself can't say he isn't also captivated by dark eyes and a smile that wouldn't be out of place with blood in its teeth.
it's not the breaking by Shadaras
Absently, mind on the work he’s doing, Zhou Zishu says, “Shidi, can you—”
His mouth snaps shut on the request, but it’s already too late.
Wen Kexing turns to him and says, “I’m sick of this.” His tone is almost cheerful. There’s still more malice laced through Wen Kexing’s mouth than Zhou Zishu can remember hearing directed towards him before.
It shivers across his body, and Zhou Zishu closes his eyes briefly before carefully setting down the wall-hanging he’d wanted help replacing. “What do you want to do about it?” Zhou Zishu asks, shifting his weight to prepare for the attack he suspects is coming.
Wen Kexing plays with his fan, silently considering him, and then a smile spreads across his face. “I’m going to make you forget that word.”
rage, rage against the dying of the light by Madcap_Miss
The thing about pushing people past their limits is that it makes them dangerous.
It is possible that this is a truth Wen Kexing and Xie Wang neglected to account for when making their grand plan.
Bureaucratically Ever After by TK_DuVeraun
Wen Kexing was chosen to ceremonially marry the immortal in the Journey's End Festival that came around once every one hundred years. It's not a big deal, especially since there's no clause saying he can't hook up with the official walking him through the ceremonies, Zhou Xu.
Dangerous Illusions by manic_intent
Yuanxiao Festival was one of Zhou Zishu’s least favourite times of the year. It wasn’t the problem of thousands of lanterns clogging up the streets and rooftops of the Imperial City, making it more challenging to conduct Tian Chuang business. It wasn’t the throngs of people who packed into the Imperial City from beyond to enjoy the spectacle, or the increased risk of a fire hazard, or the thousands of perfectly edible mandarin oranges being thrown into the river. It wasn’t the fact that Tian Chuang business often ground to a halt during the lunar new year period, leaving Zishu at loose ends. It was all of that, all at once.
to hold your heart in arms by threerings
After the events of Episode 12, Wen Kexing wants to know what Zhou Zishu meant by saying he has a terminal illness. The Seven Nails of Torment are revealed. And feelings are explored.
“How long do you have?”
“About two years.” Pain twisted in his chest as he watched this truth hit Wen Kexing. He felt guilt for doing this to him. Perhaps he should have told him from the beginning, warned him before...before they became so close. It was a truly unfair turn of events, to meet someone and feel this kind of connection, only to find out it was only temporary. He’d wanted to avoid causing just this kind of pain, but had found Wen Kexing so impossible to deflect.
Ill Omens by manic_intent
The drinking game that Zishu had lured Wen Kexing into playing was reaching a dangerous stage, with both of them growing muddled from drink. Yet Zishu still hadn’t yet managed to get the handsome young man beside him to say anything that might hint at the person behind the smiling mask he wore. Surely there was a limit to Kexing’s composure, uncomfortable as it was to have to play such a trick on a person Zishu liked. It reminded him of every story he had ever heard about his kind. Treacherous and selfish, disloyal and ruthless. Distracted, Zishu lost another round, but Kexing’s joyous laughter stole away any disappointment he could feel.
DMBJ
My brain mostly ignored the main characters of this show and hyper-focused in on Liu Sang from the Reboot series, so almost all these recs will feature him in some way with a few PingXie thrown in as a treat.
Cascade by frith_in_thorns
Liu Sang didn't need looking after. Absolutely not. It had only been a small stabbing.
Unfortunately, Wu Xie overrode him.
Even more unfortunately, that was only the start of everyone's problems.
Unreliable Narration by fox_of_nine_tales
Liu Sang can do this.
He’s a professional, after all. That’s why the Iron Triangle brings him on these trips. He can map, and fight, and hold his own. Except now they've been separated from the others, and they're trapped, and Wu Xie's hurt, and their supplies are running low, and Liu Sang -
Liu Sang can do this.
He always has.
Eating Fish Every Day by afrikate
Liu Sang gets a cat.
Worship False idols by Sanctified_Jasper
His Ouxiang doesn't recognise him, that's pretty obvious. Liu Sang hadn't expected him to, he'd changed so much and his Ouxiang... hadn't. A tiny part of him had held out the irrational hope he would though. He's been asked before why he idolises Zhang Qiling, and he knows he'll likely be asked again, Wu Xie is the curious type, with a vested interest in Liu Sang's Ouxiang.
He has the usual lie ready of course, not that it's entirely a lie so much as... not the entire truth. Liu Sang doesn't want to tell anyone ever the real reason he feels so indebted to his Ouxiang.
A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Slutspeare
Yincangui is Where Lost Things Return, and Wu Xie, captain of the Wushanju , has been trying to find it since his uncle went missing fifteen years ago. The only thing is that no one is quite sure that it actually exists, except for Liu Sang, who manages to finagle his way onto Wu Xie's ship and into their quest. Without any solid proof or idea of where they're going, it seems like Yincangui is always going to be a lost dream... unless the crew of the Wushanju can unravel the threads of the universe and lead themselves to what they've been searching for.
It all started with a cup of tea by cease
As a retired man of leisure in his late thirties, Wu Xie didn’t expect the greatest threat to his personal safety and freedom to emerge in the form of the gossiping women in his life. Or: that one time Lao Jiumen almost planned a gay wedding.
I Will Go Now to My Pyre by Kholran
"Within the Nine Clans, the only ones who could open the box were Zhang Da Fo Ye when he was alive...and..." "And me."
Liu Sang is hired by the Huo clan and sent to a Jiumen Association meeting. His job should be simple: Pay close attention to President Zhang and act as a human polygraph. He soon realizes things are never as simple as they seem. Finding himself in the middle of a political power grab, Liu Sang makes a choice. He hopes it's the right one.
Reach for their scabbards by afrikate
After a disaster of a job, something finally goes Liu Sang's way.
Subterfuge by frith_in_thorns
"It's me," Liu Sang said, and then realised he hadn't considered at all how to actually go about this surreptitiously. Probably Wu Xie had tons of secret signals to use in this sort of circumstance, but that wasn't the type of thing Liu Sang thought of arranging ahead of time.
All the maps were wrong by frith_in_thorns
On the way back from Thunder City, Liu Sang is struggling more than he wants to admit.
Feline, fearless, faithful and true by Humanlighthouse
Wuxie is Fine. Until a cat appears in his life, that is.
can't forget (don't remember what) by laireshi
"Wu Xie," Zhang Qiling breathes, letting his tone convey the questions: are you all right, does anything hurt, do you need help?
". . . who are you?" Wu Xie asks.
The Fox's Geometry by fox_of_nine_tales
He was named Liu Sang, once, but his name was the first thing they took from him.
Li Cu vs Life by margrave
A series about Li Cu's life post Sha Hai, and his continual wrong assumption that Xiaoge is Wu Xie's ex-boyfriend.
Those who fear darkness have never seen what light can do by Merinnan, xantissa
When Wu Xie was seven years old, he snuck away from his guardian during one of the digs that Sanshu took him to. Only things went wrong, the entrance collapsed, and it took a week to dig the child out from the near collapsed tomb.
They expected a body. They prayed that the child had somehow survived, but seven days without food or water for an adult would have been deadly, a child had no chances of survival at all.
They found Wu Xie deep in the tomb, sleeping on his little backpack. He was warm and healthy, confused at why the adults were yelling, looking like he’d just stepped into the tomb five minutes ago.
Tabula Rasa by xantissa
Zhang Qiling forgets. Then he comes to some interesting conclusions regarding his relationship to the man named Wu Xie.
All Nature Has A Feeling by margrave
After the City of Thunder, Wu Xie goes on his last major adventure: solving a mystery about his life that he has questioned for over fifteen years.
The consequences of the adventure leaves Zhang Qiling questioning their relationship, and Wu Xie.
rip out the whole of your soul love by laireshi
Wu Xie had told Xiaoge, because he hadn't expected how hard it would be to deal with Xiaoge's continuously voiceless, contained reaction; his unwavering support and hidden emotions and mute heartbreak.
Cat's Paw by Merinnan, xantissa
He had already been informed that he was supposed to get down into the temple and start tracking the rival team that had got there before them. The rival team who, according to what he’d overheard, had been the ones responsible for the dozen or so mercenaries now leaving the village in body bags.
Mr. Jiao had been very polite and congenial when he told Liu Sang that he was going to hunt down that team that went down first. It hadn’t been a question, and the mercenary with the rifle pointed vaguely in Liu Sang’s direction was a very clear, if unspoken, indication of what would happen to Liu Sang if he refused.
Mr. Jiao’s people controlled the only way in and out of the village, and they also controlled all the vehicles. Liu Sang could continue to be one of Mr. Jiao’s people, or he could be one of the dead bodies loaded into the truck.
-
Before Wu Erbai could hire on Liu Sang, Liu Sang had already accepted an offer from Mr. Jiao. What he found when arriving for that job, however, was nothing what he expected - particularly the fact that it turned out that he was now working against the man he'd idolized for so long.

Reference post: Jinwang, Zhou Zishu, and Jing Beiyuan according to Word of Honor
I started reading Qi Ye after finishing Word of Honor, and at first I approached it as potential background for Word of Honor. But the more I both read that and looked at the details given to us in Word of Honor, the more another approach made sense to me. Word of Honor takes character names and elements from Qi Ye, to be sure, but the context and details often change quite a bit. I’ve talked a little bit in a previous meta about the differences/similarities in my head between Jinwang and Helian Yi.
However, some of the differences in biographical detail stuck out so much that it occurred to me that it might be more productive (as a writer of fanfiction for Word of Honor alone) to take all of the details we’re given and apply it not to analyzing differences, but to seeing what picture the show does give us. Approached as characters independent from the source text, what can we figure out about them and the situation that made them?
That’s a lot of words to say that I’m basically just going to share my notes: what we do know, just from what’s said in the drama. Also, to preface, I know very little Chinese! I am just squirrelling away what I can from subtitles and resorting to dictionaries, so I can’t give a ton of context or analysis beyond what’s presented on a surface level and I very well may have missed or misinterpreted some things. Would love to hear about it if I have.
The Princes of Jin
To start with: Jinwang is neither an emperor nor the heir to one. This is explicit from episode 1. Our first glimpse of Zhou Zishu and Tianchuang come in a scene set at the mansion of a jiedushi. Li-daren (the jiedushi in charge, and Princess Jing’an’s father) is writing letters in haste to let others know that Jinwang is secretly training assassins in Tianchuang with the intention of killing court officials and rebelling.(1) In episode 11, when Zhou Zishu tells Chengling and Wen Kexing the truth about who he is, he says that for generations the Zhou family have followed the jiedushi of Jinzhou, which suggests to me Jinwang holds the same position that Li-daren does.
There are different kinds of princes besides heirs to emperors. In this case, it’s probably a title bestowed on one of Jinwang’s predecessors by the emperor. The Jinwang of present day is at least the second prince in his line: his father is always spoken of as either the former Jinwang (先晋王) or, in a flashback in episode 24 to a time when he was still alive, wangye (王爷). In the same flashback, Zhou Zishu addresses the man who will become Jinwang as shizi-ye (世子爷), Notably, this is not the title Helian Yi has in Qi Ye, taizi, because he’s not a Crown Prince. (It appears to be pretty consistent with what you’d call the heir to someone in Jinwang’s position).
So, what about the emperor? Well, we actually do hear a little about him when Han Ying shows up to lightly menace Gao Chong in episode 7. Gao Chong gets angry at the threats and says, Tianchuang might rule over the Northwest, but we’re in Yueyang City, under the rule of the emperor. And then we literally don’t hear anything about him. When Xie’er says in episode 34 that he plans to announce himself as the new emperor, his plan involves killing Jinwang first. Jinwang himself, in episode 1, says he plans to be emperor within the next three years. Whoever and wherever the current emperor is, it’s fairly clear that Jinwang’s expected to take his place: not as heir, but by taking power.
A dark room, and a window to heaven
The origins of Jinwang’s bid for the throne go all the way back to the time the former prince was still in charge. By all appearances, Former Jinwang was quite a volatile leader. The episode 24 flashbacks give us the story of Jinwang and Zhou Zishu’s laoshi. Former Jinwang believed slanderous rumors about laoshi and had him thrown in prison and then executed. Not only that, his body was left outside for scavengers to pick apart. Zhou Zishu promised a grieving Jinwang that he would find it and bury it properly.
Zhou Zishu’s father also met his death at Former Jinwang’s hands, as Han Ying reveals in episode 29. He found a letter in Jinwang’s study that said Zhou Zishu’s father was killed secretly for treason against Jinwang. Zhou Zishu had previously believed he died of an illness; he was Former Jinwang’s best friend and trusted subordinate.(2) With later context about Zhou Zishu’s father’s quest for the secrets in what became the World’s Armory, it seems likely he was killed for that failure.
Before dying, laoshi wrote a poem in blood on the walls of his prison. For the poem and better context on it, please check out this post. I’m not sure whether we’re supposed to believe that Tianchuang’s name is a reference to this poem, but Zhou Zishu at the start clearly believed he and Jinwang could make things better. Jinwang certainly never forgets the poem: he recites it in episode 1 as he watches Zhou Zishu ride away with the Nails in his chest.
The courtyard oath
Jinwang’s success is not his alone. He had several close friends and allies, all of whom have left him by the end of the show. The most vital of these in the drama appears to be Zhou Zishu. His Tianchuang propels him to power, and they’re also kin: Jinwang is Zhou Zishu’s older cousin of another surname (he bids Zhou Zishu to address him as 表哥, biao-ge). We don’t really know exactly how they’re related, but I would guess it’s more likely that Former Jinwang married his friend’s sister than that Zhou Zishu’s mother was Former Jinwang’s sister. Both are fun ideas to play with, though.
There are more, though! In episode 30, during what I like to think of as the Worst Wine Party Ever, Jinwang reminisces about a promise made ten years ago in Qingluan’s courtyard. All the friends there would dig up this wine and drink it together. We are treated to a vivid picture in Jinwang’s rose-tinted reminiscences: a flower-filled courtyard, with Jing Beiyuan playing the qin, Qin Jiuxiao playing xiao, Yunxing(3) doing a sword dance, and Qingluan(4) composing songs. And Zhou Zishu and Jinwang, side by side.
Of course, by the time of this reminiscing, everyone but Zhou Zishu is gone. Yunxing went far away to the borderland, Qingluan committed suicide, Jiuxiao died in a battle in Lucheng (which Jinwang orchestrated), and Jing Beiyuan...
Okay, I admit, I have not finished Qi Ye, so I have no clue how he escaped Helian Yi in the book, but this is so tasty. Jinwang apparently believes that he poisoned Beiyuan to death. Zhou Zishu brings this up straight-faced despite knowing full well Beiyuan is alive, and it seems like when Wu Xi and Beiyuan come up in the show he’s always known he was alive and just happened to lose touch. So...somehow they made that happen.
Also, I don’t really have another place to bring this up, but this thing about how they adapted Jing Beiyuan just makes me laugh. When he introduces himself in episode 30, he says that he’s the seventh child of his generation. (I guess to justify the Qi Ye title?) And I just. PLEASE. Imagine there being six more of them. Imagine Beiyuan having OLDER SIBLINGS and being the way that he is.
I’m not going to go over everything that happened with Jiuxiao, because I figure people know/remember? That’s a pretty prominent part of Zhou Zishu’s emotional journey. But if anyone doesn’t and wants an account hit me up.
Shatuo origins
I don’t really know why the show did this, but this is kind of one of the things they did that most locates Jinwang in a place very different to Helian Yi’s: they decided to give his family a non-Han origin story and use that to tie him into the World’s Armory. This comes up right at the end of the show, in episode 36, when Zhou Zishu and Jing Beiyuan discuss Jinwang’s reason for wanting the World’s Armory.
I’m going to give the untranslated subtitles here for anyone who wants to take a crack at them, along with what Netflix gives in English:
Looking back, he and I are both descendants of Shatuo.(5) Our ancestors succeeded in stopping a riot, so they were granted the national surname and were appointed as jiedushi. That’s how we got what we have today.
王爷跟我追根溯源
本是沙陀后裔
因先祖平乱有功
方才得赐国姓
官拜节度使繁衍生息
才有了而今的局面
If we go further back, our clan from this branch was the subordinate of Tuojie(6) Imperial kinsmen.
可是如果再往前论
我们族这一支实则隶属拓揭王族
The World’s Armory, it turns out, was actually originally a legendary vault among the six clans of different surnames that Jing Beiyuan and Jinwang’s families come from. The key was broken up into six pieces, which Beiyuan suggests is the five Glazed Armor pieces plus the key. It was supposed to contain the secret to a long-lasting country, which (as it turns out) is a bunch of sacks of grain and farming manuals written in Tuojie characters.(7)
It’s fairly clear that this has always been Jinwang’s pursuit (there’s a shot of him in episode 12 with an old drawing of the Glazed Armor/six keys), as well as his father’s (since the quest for it got Zhou Zishu’s father killed). So this ends up tying him a lot tighter into the whole web of nonsense around the Glazed Armor, too.
Locations
The show tells us that Jinzhou is in the Northwest during the tete-a-tete between Gao Chong and Han Ying, and elsewhere Hedong is mentioned in episode 1. Jin + Hedong seem to identify it as the area around Taiyuan; there was a Hedong circuit in the area during the Tang dynasty, as well as a state of Jin with the same character as Jinzhou in Word of Honor. Both seem to have been ruled by Li Keyong, but for that I’m relying on Wikipedia entries referencing Chinese-language sources. All of this to say, you’re probably safe setting it in modern-day Shanxi.
Some building names gotten either via Netflix subtitles or pointing my phone camera at screenshots to extract characters:
Jinwang’s palace (or possibly just the main hall) is called Lichun Palace [Hall] (黎淳殿).
Tumblr media
After giving the Nails to Bi Changfeng, Zhou Zishu emerges from a building called Guiyun Pavilion (归云阁), presumably the same one he was just walking through with all the stone and Tianchuang guys and the dramatic skylight. Zhou Zishu’s painting with the flowers is kept in a building called Chongming Court (重明苑). This might be his home? I’m really unclear on how all this fits together.
Tumblr media
A few aerial views for good measure:

The palace

Also, as a point of interest, the dragon banner does not appear to be Jinwang’s personal symbol.
This banner appears inside Lichun Palace:

This one outside Li-daren’s mansion:

And this one on the front of Guiyun Pavilion:

And I think that’s what I’ve got! Surprised how much there is on all of this in the nooks and crannies of this show.
---
(1) Netflix subtitles give us a few of the addressees: the governors (taishou) of Changsha and Nanning.
(2) Also, his brother-in-law.
(3) He Yunxing is one of the conspirators in Qi Ye, and you could probably transplant who he is in that novel easily into this setting.
(5) This one line spurred so much wiki-holing and speculation about the setting for this from me. Look, I’m just saying
(4) Less so Su Qingluan of Qi Ye, a beautiful young woman who tries to and fails to ensnare Helian Yi and his party in schemes on his brother’s behalf. (And whose death, in another lifetime, was the center of the falling out between Jing Beiyuan and Helian Yi).
(6) No amount of googling has saved me. The best I can come up with is a type of warrior among the Shatuo Turks via a Baidu article I skimmed via Google translate, but that’s not at all how the show treats Tuojie. If anyone has any idea what’s going on here I would love to know.
(7) I think there’s some stuff about agrarian vs. nomadic cultures baked in here that I am not the person to address, it’s definitely A Thing I Would Like to Read Up On along with a billion other things.

pridewrite day 11 time~
day 11: domestic/poly, ft. han ying/jin zixuan
"This is very domestic," Han Ying observes.
He is standing in the corner of the private kitchen as if he's a palace guard, which to be fair he has spent a lot of time being. Straight-backed, hands clasped behind him, Han Ying manages to wear his Jin-gold robes more like a soldier than any disciple has before.
Aware of his own limitations, he will be first to admit he has never been extremely good at the disguise and infiltration part of this job, not like Zhuangzhu, but he is still perfectly competent or he would not have been assigned here. And truly, when he is in public, his mask is passable. Here in this--this cozy setting, though...well, he's just not used to it. Even after an entire season spent living adjacent. So the indolent affability he put on in the dining hall this afternoon slips away, replaced with something more rigid and comfortable.
In spite of his own stiffness, Han Ying's observation is not incorrect; Jin Zixuan at least is in a rare state of undress with his fine outer robe off and his sleeves held back, hair tossed over his shoulder, bustling around the small lamplit space.
It's not the first time Han Ying has seen him like this. In the few weeks he's been in Lanling, he's already noted how natural Jin Zixuan looks when cooking or gardening; it's truly obvious enough that even one not trained by Zhou Zishu himself in observation couldn't miss it. Jin Zixuan takes to such things with as much poise as he does swordplay or archery--his awkward, stilted manner sloughs off and the light of purpose sparks confidence in his eyes. It's good to see.
He has many nights thought fondly, and with some small humour, about the drastic difference between Jin Zixuan in this setting to anywhere else. It is, however, the first time Han Ying has felt at ease enough to comment on it.
"Indeed," Jin Zixuan responds with a small smile. Han Ying counts such a smile as a personal victory, even if it is given to the chopping board.
That ought to be the end of it but Jin Zixuan turns to face Han Ying abruptly. He takes a short breath, then opens his mouth to say something--and lets it out in a rush instead. He takes another one, tries again. "Han Ying. You're not on duty tonight."
Before Han Ying can even open his mouth, Jin Zixuan cuts him off with a shake of his head. "I don't mean--I mean, don't go. Just--you're not on duty right now. Sit down."
It is something caught between an invitation and an order. Han Ying does not take orders from Jin Zixuan, or anyone in Jinlin Tai, in fact, except as a cover. They do not even have the power to dismiss his services or send him away, though they of course believe they do. He answers only to Zhuangzhu--oh, and Wangye, of course, not that Wangye has any notice or care of such trivial details as this mission.
The earnestness in Jin Zixuan's eyes says that this is not intended as an order at all, though, in spite of his tone. As an invitation, a plea, it's almost worse. Han Ying feels his shoulders tense and he sets them with purpose.
"I am on duty until such time as Jin-gongzi no longer requires Tianchuang's assistance."
"No," Jin Zixuan says firmly. "Not tonight. And don't call me gongzi, please."
Han Ying does not want to have this argument. He also does not want to move from his defensible place in the corner or give up his familiar cordiality. In no way does he want to be made to bring his mask in here, too, play his character even in the one place he can set it down just for the sake of a young lord's comfort. A rare luxury, perhaps, when undercover, and one he should be less attached to, but he'd truly thought, of all people, that Jin Zixuan would not ask such a thing from him. He is saved from a response by a small commotion on the stove.
Jin Zixuan turns to see to it; the bubbles simmer down. Stillness is an awkward reprieve, but it allows Han Ying a moment to think.
Tonight, Jin Zixuan said. Tonight is not always.
Jin Zixuan's forearm flexes when he grips the wooden spoon and as Han Ying's eyes get lost tracing the path of it up to Jin Zixuan's lips his mind presents him with other details he had failed to piece together.
Sit down.
The table just beyond the kitchen is tucked in a drapery-hung nook--this whole place being something of a nest, evoking the feeling of a small cottage more than a suite in a grand place like Jinlin Tai. The only way to sit without leaving the room is to sit at the table. Which has, as is customary, been set for two places.
With a thoughtful sort of hum, Jin Zixuan reaches for a jar of some herb or spice. Han Ying does not recognise its purpose in flavour but he absently registers it as Not Poison.
"Is Jiang-guniang joining you this evening?" Han Ying asks, blunt.
They dine together a few times a week but it is not unusual for Jiang Yanli to be absent at this point; when they are not both cooking, she is often sent for only after the table is ready. Jin Zixuan seems glad enough to be joined by her, but still skittish of being simply observed by her. Luckily he has no such reservations about his guard. In fact, frequently he will step over and feed Han Ying this or that from his wooden spoon, or make him take a bite of something from his fingers, asking for his opinions so he can better impress his intended.
Jin Zixuan bites his lip, not looking up, and Han Ying knows at once that he is as much of an idiot as Qin Jiuxiao always laments. He still blinks at the sound of the simple, "No."
"Oh," Han Ying breathes. He doesn't mean to. It happens anyway.
Whatever his face looks like, when Jin Zixuan does finally meet his eyes, must be reassuring because Jin Zixuan grins, soft and sweet. Han Ying basks in it.
And then, finally getting around to perhaps what he should have started with, Jin Zixuan asks, "Han Ying, will you have dinner with me tonight?"
Han Ying inclines his head and feels a smile on his own face. "It would please me to accept."

Before Xie Yixiu could speak, he heard Mo Jiang cup his hand and say, “General Xie is kind and well-intentioned, I really appreciate your kindness; but I am His Highness Duan Wang’s commander guard, I have already pledged to follow Wangye for life.”
Mo Jiang is so precious 🥹💖
