(in other news, what’s sleep when i got a cute idea for an outfit for tonitoni!!!!!!!!!!

this outfit is based on childe’s outfit in a winter night’s lazzo - i particularly focused on the muted color palette of his outfit + the splashes of red seen in his mask and scarf. i also included the diamond chinese knots that both his pv and in-game outfit have too.

and considering the context of the pv is a serious, ‘formal’ sort of event but with a shared dress code i.e. with uniformed military personnel, tonitoni’s outfit is similarly designed to be formal but also to “match” with the uniformed-ish styles of the other harbingers in the pv. which is to say if someone dropped the big fwuffy harbinger coat on her, she’d blend in perfectly ww

the colored sketch on the left is my “final” draft of the outfit, but i couldn’t decide on if i’d want her to have her usual twin braids or a singular braid so that’s there on the side for funsies ww. additionally, the first draft of the outfit had boots + an asymmetrical backside, long and coat-like with a fluffy trim. i like the idea of that somehow being a secondary design of the skin that can be toggled lol

and since this is me toying with the idea of a tonitoni skin - for extra funsies, a lore story + hypothetical voicelines below - )

In the land of peace and winter beauty, for all the bitter cold there may be, warmth gathers and mingles in the very heart and hearth of the Tsaritsa.

Of course, to any visiting foreigner, this may not be so easily apparent, if at all.

Such a mundane impression is quick to falter when Tartaglia sighs and rises from her seat.

There is a profound disconnect between the reality of what is happening in America right now and what we are hearing from the White House.

Tonight, Hurricane Laura is barreling toward the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. The storm is on the verge of becoming a Category 5 hurricane, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to make landfall in the continental U.S. Its winds have reached 150 miles per hour and the National Hurricane Center has warned of an “unsurvivable” storm surge of up to 20 feet, as well as anywhere from 5-10 inches of rain. Forecasters warn that half of Lake Charles, Louisiana, home to almost 80,000 people, might be submerged. More than half a million people have been ordered to evacuate the region, but this will be a tall order for the 23.3% of the population there that lives in poverty.

Iowa is trying to rebuild from the August 10 derecho which brought winds of up to 140 miles an hour, left more than 400,000 Iowans without power, and damaged homes, businesses, and more than ten million acres of crops. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds asked for about $4 billion to cover the cost of the damage; Trump approved the portion that covered federal buildings and utilities but not assistance to homeowners and farmers.

Western wildfires have burned more than 1.8 million acres in August—an area almost double the size of Rhode Island. Fourteen states, including California, Arizona, Oregon, and Colorado, have suffered from the extreme events. While firefighters are gaining control over many of the fires, red flag warnings are still in effect in Northern California, Nevada, Oregon, and Montana.

A disaster of a different sort is burning in America as coronavirus continues to spread. New CDC guidelines quietly put out on Monday no longer recommend testing for asymptomatic people even if they’ve been in contact with someone who has the coronavirus. This new rule appears to reflect Trump's frequent complaints that widespread testing is responsible for our climbing numbers of coronavirus cases. (He is incorrect.) He has repeatedly said we should slow the testing down. A White House spokesperson said the decision was science-based and not political; American Medical Association President Dr. Susan Bailey asked the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Department of Health and Human Services to "release the scientific justification" for the changes.

The spokesperson told reporters that the White House Coronavirus Task Force had signed off on the new guidelines, but Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and member of the task force told CNN that he was not part of any such discussion. “I am concerned about the interpretation of these recommendations and worried it will give people the incorrect assumption that asymptomatic spread is not of great concern. In fact it is,” he said. Other members of the task force also expressed alarm about the new rules.

And there is yet another kind of fire burning. On Sunday afternoon, August 23, a police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Rusten Sheskey, fired seven shots into Jacob Blake’s back as he opened his car door, leaving the 29-year-old father of five gravely wounded, likely paralyzed from the waist down.

Protests erupted in the wake of the shooting of yet another Black man, with the same pattern we saw in Portland: peaceful protests by day, riots by night. Armed militia members and counter protesters rushed to Kenosha and clashed with protesters, and after rioters looted and burned businesses, civilians armed with AR-15-style rifles took to the streets claiming they would back the police and restore order. Video shows police officers thanking the armed men for their help, despite the fact they are on the streets after the city’s curfew, and handing them water bottles.

Rather than restoring order, on Tuesday, a 17-year-old white man, Kyle Rittenhouse, from Antioch, Illinois, about 20 miles southwest of Kenosha, shot and killed two people and wounded a third. Rittenhouse’s social media is full of support for “Blue Lives Matter,” and shows him posing with weapons. Video from January 30, shows him in the front row of a Trump rally in Des Moines, Iowa; video from Tuesday shows him trying to get the attention of law enforcement officers before the shooting.

This afternoon, the Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team refused to play game five of their first-round playoff series against the Orlando Magic. This is what’s known as a “wildcat strike” because it does not have the approval of union leadership—the NBA collective bargaining agreement bans strikes. The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder joined in, and by 5:00 the NBA postponed all the evening’s games. All the WNBA games were also called off, and several Major League Baseball teams have struck in solidarity.

In a statement, the Bucks said, “Despite the overwhelming plea for change, there has been no action, so our focus today cannot be on basketball.” They asked the Wisconsin legislature to reconvene and pass “meaningful measures to address issues of police accountability, brutality and criminal justice reform.” They also asked people to vote. Basketball superstar LeBron James was more straightforward: “F**K THIS MAN!!!!!” he tweeted. “WE DEMAND CHANGE. SICK OF IT[.]”

In Washington, tonight, at the third night of the Republican National Convention, speakers painted an image of the nation that did not square with this reality. There was scarce mention of the natural disasters that, in any other administration, would be headline news. The sentence “May God bless and protect the Gulf states in the path of the hurricane," offered by Eric Trump's wife Lara, was about the extent of it.

There was scarce attention paid to the coronavirus, either, which has, to date, killed more than 180,000 Americans. Twenty-five percent of the world's deaths from Covid-19 come from the U.S., which has 4% of the world’s people. From Fort McHenry, Maryland, Vice President Mike Pence congratulated Trump for suspending travel from China and saving “untold American lives.” White House officials continue to talk of the virus in the past tense, as if it is over. Images from the RNC of attendees sitting together, unmasked, send a signal that things are back to normal, when they are decidedly not.

There was no mention of Jacob Blake or the Kenosha shootings of Tuesday tonight, although Trump appeared to take the part of the Kenosha police and the civilian militias when he tweeted today that he was sending federal troops to Kenosha to restore “LAW and ORDER!”. (Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, instead deployed 500 members of the National Guard to Kenosha.)

From Fort McHenry, Maryland, Vice President Mike Pence talked of the “heroes” who have died in unrest around the country without mentioning the events that have sparked the unrest: the shootings of Black men and women at the hands of police officers, people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Jacob Blake. He lamented the death of federal officer Dave Patrick Underwood, “shot and killed during the riots in Oakland, California,” implying he was killed by protesters. In fact, Officer Underwood died in a drive-by shooting by a Boogaloo supporter on a nearly empty street. And Pence claimed that Democratic nominee Joe Biden has said he would cut funding to law enforcement; this is a lie from a super PAC ad that spliced together video footage to change its meaning.

A million years ago, during the George W. Bush administration, a White House official dismissively told journalist Ron Suskind that people like Suskind lived in “the reality-based community,” meaning that they believed solutions to the nation’s problems came from studying reality and finding answers. “That's not the way the world really works anymore,” the official told Suskind. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality…. We're history's actors...and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

Creating their own reality might have worked for Bush’s people in 2004, but sixteen years later, with the country in conflagrations both natural and manmade, it seems that approach is no longer viable.

Search for new physics through multiboson production At the LHCP conference this year, the ATLAS and CMS collaborations presented new results relating to a physics process called vector boson scattering. CMS also reported the first observation of the so-called “massive triboson production. Studying these processes to test the Standard Model is important as it could shed light on new physics. The results were presented online at the virtual LHCP conference, originally due to be held in Paris. During proton collisions at the LHC, many particles, including the carriers of the electroweak force – photons and W and Z bosons – are produced. These bosons are often referred to simply as vector bosons, in the Standard Model, and one of the processes that leads to their pair production is called vector boson scattering. Vector boson processes are an excellent probe to seek deviation from theoretical predictions. Two rare processes that are of particular interest as they probe the self-interactions of four vector bosons are diboson production via vector boson scattering and triboson production. The observation and measurement of these processes are important as they test the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, whereby the unified electroweak force separates into electromagnetic and weak forces in the Standard Model, and are complementary to the measurements of Higgs boson production and decay. In a vector boson scattering process, a vector boson is radiated from a quark in each proton and these vector bosons scatter off one another to produce a diboson final state. Triboson production refers instead to the production of three massive vector bosons. At the LHCP conference, physicists from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations presented new searches for the production of a pair of Z bosons via electroweak production including the vector boson scattering mechanism. ATLAS observed this process at 5.5 sigma and CMS reported strong evidence. CMS also reported the first observation of a W boson produced in association with a photon through the vector boson scattering process, as well as more precise measurements of the same-sign WW production, and an observation of the vector boson scattering production of a W and a Z boson, complementing earlier ATLAS observations. Another way to probe four-boson interaction is to study the very rare production of three massive bosons or tribosons. This April, the CMS experiment released a 5.7 sigma result of the triboson phenomenon, establishing it as a firm observation, following the first evidence of this process seen by the ATLAS experiment last year. Most physics processes of fundamental particles involve two or more individual particles that interact with each other via an intermediary particle that is emitted or absorbed in the process. “The more bosons produced, the rarer the event. This new observation of tribosons was very difficult because it is a much rarer process than the one that led to the Higgs boson discovery, and very interesting because it may reveal signs of new particles and anomalous interactions,” says Roberto Carlin, CMS spokesperson. In the triboson and vector boson scattering processes, W and Z can interact with themselves to create more W and Z particles, producing two or three bosons. W and Z being highly unstable particles, they quickly decay into leptons (electrons, muons, taus and their corresponding neutrinos) or quarks. But such processes are extremely rare and the diboson and triboson events that physicists look for are mimicked by background processes, making them even more difficult for physicists to analyse. “To separate signal from background, physicists have to be ingenious and employ advanced machine learning algorithms. This is a challenging task for such rare processes, and requires meticulous and thorough studies,” says Karl Jakobs, ATLAS spokesperson. The measurements of vector boson scattering and triboson production presented at LHCP 2020 are consistent with the predictions made by the Standard Model, which remains our best understanding of fundamental particles and their interactions. The above observations also provide physicists with tools to probe quartic self-interaction between massive electroweak bosons. The current measurements place constraints on the strength at which these quartic interactions take place and increased precision from the use of new datasets could open up horizons for new physics at higher energy scales in the LHC and lead to possible discoveries of new particles. Lori Ciotti, a regional assistant vice president of operations for the Renfrew Center in Boston, which treats eating disorders, does not recommend teens using the Weight Watchers system.

"Dieting is a slippery slope into an eating disorder,'' Ciotti told TODAY. "It sends a message that one should not listen to their body's hunger or fullness cues, so it's really concerning from that perspective."

"I think what (Weight Watchers) is doing here is offering a sanctioned method of counting calories or points or whatever they want to call it," Ciotti continued. "It's not teaching teens anything about self-care or self-worth. Instead it teaches them that their worth is about a number on a scale or the back of their jeans."

Kristi King, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dieteticsand a senior pediatric dietitian at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, spoke to TODAY about the effects of a calorie-counting diet while not commenting directly on Weight Watchers.

"This is a time that (teens) are developing habits that are going to be life-long,'' she said. "Our concern about counting calories and being very restrictive is the fact that we know that having those behaviors in that particular age group can lead to eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa or bulimia."

A restrictive diet could also deprive teens of important vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins or fats that they need for a growing body, King said.

"Long-term effects besides eating disorders, if we are extremely restrictive in that time period, you could potentially cause growth stunting,'' King said. "When you're counting calories, you're not looking at what types of healthy foods you should be putting into your body. You could eat a candy bar for lunch and still meet that caloric requirement."

The Weight Watchers announcement also spawned the hashtag #WakeUpWeightWatchers from people angry with the company appealing to teens.

Weight Watchers said its aim is educating teens about eating more nutritious foods.

"Our goal is to help those who need healthy habits to develop them at this critical life-stage; this is not about dieting,'' Weight Watchers said in a statement to TODAY. "For a six-week period this summer, teens will be able to join Weight Watchers for free and can continue their membership through age 17. They will be required to go to one of our meeting locations for their parent/guardian to provide consent, as we know a family-based approach is critical at this age."

"We have and will continue to talk with healthcare professionals about specific criteria and guidelines as we get ready to launch this program," Weigh Watchers said. "We think there’s a real opportunity to make an impact on a problem that is not currently being addressed effectively."

Weight Watchers did not clarify whether its free program this summer will be specifically tailored to teens or whether it will be the traditional program used by adults.

"We'll share more specific criteria and guidelines when we launch the program,'' the company said in a statement.

Ciotti also questioned the approach of having teens attend Weight Watchers meetings with family members.

"That isn't necessarily the family message we want to hear,'' she said. "We want families to be eating together and supporting their child's changing bodies and development.

"The statistics are already about 35 percent of people who diet, it turns into an eating disorder, so I think that they're sort of walking them right into that statistic."

Ciotti believes examining the underlying behaviors around food is more crucial for teenagers.

"We want to focus on emotional health and what is driving someone to hyper control their food or exercise,'' she said. "It's really hard when you're between 13 and 17 to understand all the changes you're going through. If someone is using any behavior in an extreme, we want to make sure that we understand what is behind that behavior and treat that, and not focus on the food."

Then he hit the victim in the face with the machete, which left a small cut on the victim's cheek. The victim then used a glass bottle to defend himself and Treece fled. Lawmakers said Treece's vehicle slipped off a school bus with 34 children and the bus driver as he tried to exit the crime scene. No one was injured on the bus.
