FUN INSURANCE TIP: THE BIRTHDAY RULE
IF YOU ARE STILL ON YOUR PARENTS' INSURANCE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:
If both of your parents get insurance through their jobs, pick one. There is a rule- and this sounds so fucking fake but I have spent HOURS the past week trying to fix this mess- that whichever parent has an earlier birthday in the year is the parent who you will be billed under. Even if you ask the hospital to make the other parent your primary insurance.
So if, for example, your mom's insurance sucks, and your dad's insurance doesn't, you might be covered under both. But if your mom, for example, was born in January (year does not matter, it's only by month/day), then her insurance will be used as the primary one no matter what.
So ensure your mom, in this hypothetical example, REMOVES YOU ENTIRELY FROM HER INSURANCE POLICY.
Also, while you're at it- GET WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU WERE REMOVED.
It took me 3 hours of constant phone calls to get a written document stating that I didn't even HAVE my mom's insurance policy on the dates specified. If I didn't get that document, or my name had still been on her account, then I'd be currently out $700 for a surgery i got almost two years ago.
I'm really fucking lucky my mom just removed me from her insurance policy when she did anyway, because she didn't know about the rule, so it was pure coincidence that she removed me anyway. We are going to be very careful and document every insurance change from now on. I really suggest you all do the same; ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE STILL ON YOUR PARENTS' INSURANCE AND THEREFORE DO NOT HAVE IMMEDIATE ACCESS TO A PORTAL/COPIES OF DOCUMENTS/WHATEVER.
