Arlecchino Demo Music Analysis

DISCLAIMER: I am no musical expert in any way, just a massive fan of the Genshin soundtrack and learned music theory as a hobby.

One of my favorite things about Genshin is its music. It is not just that it sounds amazing, but each element, style, and motif has meaning and purpose- while being orchestrated and mixed to create a truly magnificent and unique musical experience. It is no exaggeration that this soundtrack is one of a kind.

Arlecchino's Character Demo has just been released, so I want to make a musical breakdown of it because I think it is a stellar example of how Genshin uses music to signify its themes and present its story. Before we get into that, there are ideas that I must detail for you to get the full picture, so I hope you enjoy!

Genshin uses musical elements to signify certain ideas (places, characters, elements, etc.). For example, Chinese and Japanese instrumentation signify Liyue and Fontaine respectively, but it goes beyond this.

"Travelers' Reverie" — Behind the Scenes of the Music of Sumeru | Genshin Impact

You may have noticed that a majority of Genshin's environmental music consists of real world instruments. There are even videos showcasing the orchestras and instruments of each nation (Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine), and using orchestral/live instruments even applies to other regions such as Enkanomiya, The Chasm, Golden Apple Archipelago, and etc. This gives each region a distinct musical identity, but all together it establishes them as places that are grounded and real.

During the final act of Fontaine's archon quest, we have been introduced to a new musical identity. This is Genshin's dubstep, and it has been used to signify otherworldly power. This genre not made by a real orchestra or real instruments, but through sampling (using existing sounds/music) and technology.

This is the identity in its most blatant form: (Shadow phase of the All Devouring Narwal boss fight)

This entire track symbolizes this. No other track within Genshin's world sounds remotely like it, symbolizing its otherworldly nature. It does not belong here- not with the live orchestras and melodic symphonies of Genshin's world.

Simply put, hardcore dubstep = otherworldly

Note: I am aware that many character demos and other tracks also use dubstep/EDM, but for the purposes of this post I think it should be left separate. Only if someone openly disputes this conclusion then I would happily oblige in presenting more evidence to this thru a reply or rb. Essentially, dubstep IS used in other tracks, but only in Silhouette of Catastrophe and Arlecchino's demo is the dubstep used as a"main idea", while also accompanied by heavy bass and "smaller intricate" sounds. This specific form of dubstep is what signifies being otherworldly.

Another musical element is children's singing!

In terms of the in-game ost, children's singing is used most prominently in Dragonspine's soundtrack in Genshin's world- and I will admit that I am not sure why that is. Perhaps Dragonspine has themes relating to innocence? Childhood? Tranquility? Whatever it is, I am not sure of. (If you have an idea, I would love to know!)

Instead, we can look at a certain character demo:

Nahida's! The beatdrop of her demo begins with children's singing. I believe this represents her innocent nature, status as a young archon, and the children of the forest that surround her- the Aranara.

Not only that, but the only other people in her demo are all children. Suffice to say, Genshin pays very close attention to using their music to reflect the themes and attributes of their characters in their demos (I could make more posts about this- breaking down more demo music...I think that'd be fun)

It's fairly straightforward, but essentially children's singing = children, innocence, and childhood

Now let's (finally) look at Arlecchino's demo

Let's first review each of the main musical elements and what they represent:

Dubstep and distortion: Otherworldly power. For Arlecchino: her curse, power, and dominance. "A spark cannot shatter all shadows until it sets all ablaze"

Children's voices and music box: Children. For Arlecchino: a lullaby; possibly protectiveness/care or tainted innocence (depending on how you interpret how she sees her children)

The music begins with a solo piano- lonely, melancholic, and mysterious. This is how she is after the death of Clervie and the rest of the children of the HotH.

Afterwards, the piano gets distorted- then replaced with harsh artificial beats and musical turmoil. This may be reflected on how she defeated her "mother" using her otherworldly power- her curse.

Following this is the anticipated beatdrop. Fascinatingly, it is not actually lead by dubstep, but by a distorted music box with a creeping melody. Not only that, but it is accompanied by a children's choir and a drum beat together.

The dubstep then ramps up- completely overtaking the track. But one it has reached its height, it is interrupted by the music box and singing children.

One can interpret this as her children holding her back from unleashing her true power. When she is most ruthless and violent, she is reminded of their playfulness and innocence.

The choir ends abruptly- but afterwards, the children's voices and music box lead the melody, while the dubstep and distortions accompany it harmoniously to create one whole piece.

This is who Arlecchino is. A Father and Harbringer defined by "caring" for her children and her otherworldly power. A love that nurtures and neglects- a power that frees and destroys. A wolf in sheep's clothing, or a sheep in wolf's clothing?

However the demo doesn't end there- the solo piano returns once again.

"Its flame is no longer needed, for you have the strength to defend yourselves"

This is going into speculative territory, but perhaps after she passes on her title as "king", she is once again lonely, left without a family. After all, she may no longer be needed or wanted at all- not after all that she has done, not after all that she has failed to do.

Conclusion

I love Genshin's music from the bottom of my heart. One reason why is the attention, detail, and beauty put into each track. Each piece is not only an experience, but also a story, an idea, a character, a place, whatever the artists wish to portray.

Arlecchino's Character Demo is one but many pieces that showcase this. In this track, we are able to discern Arlecchino's two core ideas, her relationship with her children and otherworldly power, through an incredible combination of singing, a music box, and dubstep. One can even theorize the course of her story through its visuals and music, in the end creating a beautiful and encompassing display of "Arlecchino".

Heyo heyo how are y'all today? This is a gift for the lovely @intheticklecloset! I've had a serious craving for some good ol' Yuno Asta antics and this is the result! :D

This takes place during episode 131, so possible spoilers below the cut! (Nothing major- the episode was a filler but also freaking hilarious- y'all check it out kjarjajrjke)

Summary: Yuno and Asta take a break during the day. One thing leads to another and soon Yuno is discovering a hilarious quirk about his short best friend.

“Nehehe- stohohp! Asta!” Yuno ducked down with a scrunch, giggling when his friend pressed tickly fingers into his neck. “Cut that out!”

“Heh, you haven’t changed at all!” Asta laughed, ruffling the taller boy’s hair before flopping down in the grass beside them. It was after their assistant teaching gigs; the kids were with Sister Lily at the moment, giving the boys a small break. “Father Orsi used to do that to you all the time when we were kids. You’d be close to tears only to start giggling like crazy!”

“I don’t recall that.” Yuno averted his gaze, his ears tinted red.

“You absolutely did!” Asta grinned, stretching out his arms before tucking them behind his head. “You loved it too.”

“I did not.”

“Did too!”

“Did not.”

“Did too!”

“Do you want me to end you?” Yuno tried to glare, wavering when Asta grinned at him. “Ugh, you’re as annoying as you are short.”

“Heh, yeah- NOW WAIT A MINUTE!” Asta sat up with a huff, earning a small grin from the other. “You jerk- take that back!”

“Or what?” Yuno raised a brow, feeling pretty smug. “What are you going to do?”

There was a stalemate- the two staring each other down with twitching fingers and shifty gazes. A leaf blew by and landed oh so gently…

“Gotcha-whoa!” Asta had leaped forward just as a gust of wind smacked him in the gut, sending him flying backwards. His back hit the ground with barely any pain- Yuno must have used his wind to protect him. What a great guy!

Then said mage was on him, squeezing the ever living daylights out his sides and sending ticklish waves up and across his nervous system. Not a great guy, not a great GUY-

“Yuhuhuhuhuhuhuhno! Ahehahahahhahaha, yohohohohou jeheheheheheerk!” Asta cried, kicking his feet against the grass as his friend began tickling. “Thahahhat whahhahas mihihihihihi mohohohoohohove!”

“Was it now? Sorry.” He didn’t sound sorry at all! If anything- he sounded unjustly smug, wearing that damn sly grin as he carried on dancing his fingers across Asta’s ribs. “Should have moved faster, Shortsa.” “Ahehahhahahha! Yuuhuhuhno! Yuuhuhuhno I’m gohohohohonna-NYEHEHAHHA! A cackle ripped out of the shorter mage’s throat when Yuno pressed his thumbs into each side of his belly. “Oohoohooh yoohohoohohu’re boohoohohohold!”

“Bad spot?” A thought crossed his mind then. What would happen if he…

“Aww, what’s wrong? Does it tickle too much, whittle Asta?” He cooed, using the same voice he used when he played house with the kids. He didn’t know why- he had the sudden urge to try it and see what would happen. “Does somebody have a ticklish tummy?”

“AHEHAHAHA!” Asta’s eyes widened and his face flushed a bright shade of pink- a color he never thought he’d see on the other boy. His laughter boomed as the hands going to catch Yuno’s hands quickly retreated, crossing over his face as he looked away with a whine. “Doohoohohon’t aheahhahahaha! Yuuhuhuhnoohohooohoho!”

Yuno blinked, stunned. Did Asta…?

Then it all became clear.

“No way…!” Yuno was grinning now, utterly delighted at the reaction.

“Noohohoohohoho! Nohohoohoho, tahhahaht was a fluhuhuhuke! A flu-UHUUHUHUKE!” Asta all but squealed when Yuno pressed into his lower ribs, leaning in reeeeal close as he did so. When he was barely above Asta’s ear, he released his ultimate spell.

“What’s the matter? Can whittle Asta not handle some tickles on his whittle ribs? Hmm? You can cut down magic with your anti-magic, but you can’t block out how ticklish you are, can you? I should start calling you pinksta for now on with how much you’re blushing~”

Asta couldn’t even make words- only noises through hysterical laughter as he shoved and slapped at Yuno’s shoulders, feet kicking up a storm. “EHAHAHHHAHHAHAHHA!”

“What’s wrong? Got nothing to say now?” Yuno teased, feeling on top of the world. So many times Asta had him in this exact position, flustered and giggly and unable to do more than curl up and take it. To be able to put Asta in a similar state- and with the voice he used to play house with- it was amazing!

Alas, all great things must come to an end. Seeing Asta starting to cough, he immediately retracted his hands, falling back until he was sitting beside him in the cool grass. “Heh, okay. We’re done.”

The smaller mage raised a thumbs up, far too tired to properly respond. Residue giggles and gasps escaped his lips, and tears of mirth gathered in his eyes, threatening to spill. His face- once tomato red- was slowly fading to a more reasonable peach. For a moment, Yuno felt a little bad. Did he go too far?

“Ahehahaha! Hehehhee…lohohohok at you- wehenent from beheeing tihihickled to doohohing the tihihickling!” Asta grinned, sitting up some. “Yohohou’re stiihihll more tihihckclish though!”

Nevermind.

“Shush.” Laughing himself, Yuno fell back into the grass beside him, watching the clouds roll by with his best friend. “Sister Lily’s gonna come get us soon.”

“Yeah.” Asta nodded, but made no moves to get up.

“She’ll probably lecture us for running off like she did when we were kids.”

“Then she’ll tell us if we aren’t home when she gets there we get no potatoes.”

“Heh. She never did mean it. There were always extra.”

Asta laughed, happy. For once in a long time, he felt like he did before the Magic Knights. Yuno wasn’t his rival, or someone competing with him for the title of Wizard king, but just him. Just- Yuno. “I miss this.”

“Hm.” Yuno nodded, no words needed. Instead, he bumped his knuckles into Asta’s, a looser version of their go-to sign off. They spent the rest of their break staring up at the clouds until Sister Lily came around and gave her usual warning, sending them flying down the hill like kids once more.

Asta wouldn't trade it for the world.

Yeps, she does meet them!

Holly bombarded her with so many questions like: How did you get those feet? Do you have powers? What powers do you have? Why does your eyes glow like cuphead's and bendy's? Can you dance and sing? Whats your Talent? Do you eat seafood? So you like soups or not? Girl tried to chill while being interrogated by the bookworm XD

Cuphead would flirt with her at first but eventually stopped because of her stone cold reactions (she likes bendy's puns better)

Mugman was sweet to her and was kind enough to introduce the other people in the house and calm her down because of Cuphead, Holly and the warners (but she's already calm tho lol)

Cala was kinda terrified of her at first but eventually they become good friends (Siren already knew she was a mermaid from first look)

Boris would call her "Ren" and sis cuz she acts like a chill big sister to him. He secretly cringes at bendy whenever he flirts with siren but he's also happy that he's just him.

Alice would be delighted to meet her, altho siren had a little precautions on her because she's an angel, and Alice knew that. Alice trying to sense her cloudy emotions made her first interactions with alice awkward. But eventually she accepted it, she can sometimes grasp her emotions but most of the times, its blocked by something

Felix would simply be chill about her. Tho she'd be curious how his magic bag works so he kinda shows it to her but not much. Felix likes the way she is quite chill with different situations, tho he does calm her down whenever she has a panic attack (mostly this happened during books 9-11) She sometimes reads his stories of adventure after meetinv the cat, she gained interest in his books lol (bendy would talk to her fanboying how much he loves felix's adventures)

She has a good relationship with all of them as the 9th quester of the group, just the most nonchalant and overreacting at the same time, no in between XD But she's also one of the most mysterious quester since she's secretive, that is before they went to the labyrinth...

I have a drafted answer ready to use if u ever ask what would she be in the story itself... 👀

I love writing sickeningly sweet fluff bro tooth rotting to add on-- I feel Shinobu would love taking care of you. Like hugging you and leading you to the bath. She loves showering you off and taking care of you, but oftentimes I feel in public she doesn't do much PDA. It isn't because she doesn't want to, she's nervous that someone will pick up on it and use it against her. It's not your fault, or hers, it's just how she grew up. Tengen SHOWERS you with attention. seems like he'd pout from you having a job. 'you always leave me'. clingy bitch WHAHHAHA DEFINITELY has A LOT of PDA. Holding hands, cheek kisses, hand on your hip, pulling you close, paying for your things-- little subtle things that say 'I love you' that show to other people. Big into acts of service or gifts in public-- you like that necklace? Bought. You want to split the bill? No way. He doesn't need to prove he's a good partner, but he always feels he does. Needs lots of reassurance and appreciation to get that out of his head - 🪐

i agree on shinobu, i don’t she would show much pda in public but she has her ways so no worries. but that means that in private she’s very happy to shower you with attention and love ^_^

tengen is touching you 24/7. his hands are on your hips, shoulders, holding hands, grabbing your neck from behind gently (idk how to describe it i hope u get it w/o thinking he’s choking you lmao) then kissing your cheeks, your forehead, your shoulders, your hands. god, he never grows tired of showing you affection. you’re like the best and most precious person in his life.
