NEON Carnival Q&A Pamphlet Translation
disclaimer: apparently Taiwanese Mandarin is different from what I speak, so some of these may need to be taken with a grain of salt! my credentials are that my native language is Cantonese and I know - but am rusty on - Mainland Mandarin.
Q: Do the characters have set dick sizes? A: The team has a "super⭐secret measure", every time they draw the characters they'll reference it.
Q: Between Quincy and Olivine, who has the bigger breasts? A: The team fought over this and couldn't decide, so there's no answer.
Q: I want to know the ages of the long lived ones, the yokai, and the familiars! Who's the oldest? A: From oldest to youngest are: Kuya > Quincy > Rei > Aster > Morvay > Yakumo > Garu. The specifics of their ages will be revealed in the game.
Q: Who's older between Father and Topper? A: Father is older than Topper!
Q: The game has a lot of retro stuff, super curious about the producer's age! A: Retro has nothing to do with the producer's age!!!
Q: How are the kinks of each room thought up? A: The devs think of them in the small dark room, the artbook sketches include clues. [t/n: I consulted two other Chinese speakers and I'm still not really sure what the answer actually means, so this is a best guess translation.]
Q: What's inside the small dark room? A: Tired and busy devs......
Q: When designing event outfits, how do you decide where to open holes? A: Different people will think of the parts they want to highlight, later on we'll also test different levels of nakedness. (it's not like we haven't thought of throwing darts to decide) [t/n: little unsure about this one too. it's possible it means they think of which part of the characters they want to highlight, but they used 眷屬 rather than 角色.] EDIT: @milkeumilkeou has informed me that in the specific context of nuca, 眷屬 means clan members. that's what I get for not playing the game in Chinese... in this case, the better translation is: A: Depending on the clan member the devs will open the holes at the places they want to highlight, later on they'll also test different levels of nakedness. (it's not like they haven't thought of throwing darts to decide)
Q: How were the voice actors chosen? A: The producer chose them according to the characters' personalities and the desired voice. Many thanks to the voice actors!
Q: How far in advance do future events begin production? A: Usually the topic is decided on about 4 - 6 months in advance, and then production begins.
Q: I want to know which character the devs think would be the best coworker! A: Everyone agrees the best coworkers would be Eiden, Edmond and Olivine; Dante's work ability is also very strong, but he's more like a head that scares people. [t/n: 'head' may also translate to director or manager.]
Q: Do the characters have body hair? A: The devs actually really wanted to draw it, but considered various realistic reasons, so the players can't see body hair, but you're free to imagine it! (let Quincy have some stubble... how would that be?) [t/n: I would guess that the 'realistic reasons' they considered are probably that BL typically doesn't feature body hair, so it might've made the game less marketable.]
Q: Who has the most sexual experience? A: Morvay! (super fast answer) [t/n: the question is literally "who has the most experience♂️?" lol]
Q: Does the Klein Continent have a habit of wearing underwear? A: Klein has underwear. Just like hats, gloves, and scarves, when considering factors like decoration and functionality, to wear or not to wear underwear, and what type of underwear to wear, all depend on each person's preferences.
Q: Is Eiden's light brown hair dyed? A: Yes, and he'll regularly re-dye it.
Q: Does Eiden prefer briefs or boxers? A: It's okay as long as it's snug and covers him, and he has some special styles.
Q: I want to know how Eiden gets to work! A: Eiden rides a motorcycle, and on rainy days he'll switch to public transportation.
Q: What opportunity led to Eiden's interest in design? Did his designing always have to do with sex toys? A: Eiden has had artistic talent from a young age, and hoped to turn his passion into a job. His first job was being a sex toy designer at Peak of Pleasure, and this job happened to combine his two interests of design and sex. Aside from the overtime, for Eiden, this was an ideal job. [t/n: in case you don't remember, Peak of Pleasure is the name of Eiden's old workplace as mentioned in Journey to a NU World.]
Q: I want to know Eiden's relationship history! Did he have boyfriends before? A: Eiden knew he liked men from a young age. When he was fifteen he had a bitter first love, and afterwards his partners were all short term. Towards relationships he carries a generous attitude of easy-come-easy-go, and thinks that being happy in the moment is more important.
Q: Does Topper have others of his kind? A: He used to, but when he met Quincy, among those of his kind only Topper was left. [t/n: 手足 may also translate to 'siblings' or 'close friends', as opposed to 'others of his kind'.]
Q: Who makes Topper's outfits? A: Sometimes they're prepared by Quincy, sometimes they're made by Eiden.
Q: Does the food Topper hide in Quincy's hair affect Quincy washing his hair? A: No, Quincy will wash his hair when it needs to be washed. But not long after Quincy washes his hair, the food stores in his hair will be quickly refilled by Topper.
Q: I want to know Topper and Father's weights! A: Little animals' weights will fluctuate, but there's no direct link to fur amount. Topper weighs about a third of a pampo, Father only weighs about half a music box. [t/n: pampo as in the pumpkins from Eerie Escapade.]
Q: What's Yakumo's signature dish? A: He's good at everything, especially savory food. Because of his grandparents' influence he rarely eats sweets, and he can't quite grasp the seasoning amount, but after meeting Eiden he's begun to research sweets recipes.
Q: How is Edmond's knights' uniform worn? A: The uniform has a top piece and a bottom piece, the jumpsuit has a zipper on the back for convenience.
Q: If Edmond came to Taiwan, how sweet would he order his boba tea? A: After ordering full sweetness, Edmond would feel that it could be twice as sweet.
Q: How many nipple chains does Olivine have? A: Olivine makes all of his own nipple chains. He'll change them based on style and mood. The number continues to increase.
Q: Will Quincy help brush Topper's fur? A: Quincy will sometimes help brush Topper, but most of the time Topper will groom himself.
Q: Quincy, Olivine, and Kuya, who would win an arm wrestling match? A: Olivine would win, because Quincy wouldn't take it seriously and Kuya wouldn't compete.
Q: Please reveal Kuya's real height! A: It's 178cm ^^.
Q: I want to know Kuya's experiences before and after becoming a yokai! A: Kuya's journey of becoming a yokai will be revealed in future scenes. What can be revealed now is that, after Kuya became a yokai, he was a lawbreaker for some time...
Q: When Kuya addresses Quincy, why did it change from "boring associate" to "old friend"? A: When Kuya says "old friend" he doesn't mean true friends, he just likes addressing people in ways that make them uncomfortable, like "Master Rei". [t/n: Kuya probably didn't call Quincy "boring associate", but I have no idea where to begin looking for what he actually called Quincy.] EDIT: Kuya used to call Quincy "boring clan member" rather than "boring associate". credit to @milkeumilkeou once again!
Q: Does Garu sleep nude? A: He doesn't like pajamas that are restrictive or impede movement, but if it's cold Eiden will wrap him up in clothes or a blanket!
Q: When Dante first adopted Sooley, how did they get along? A: At first Dante got bitten terribly, because he tried to train Sooley to do various tricks. As they spent more time together, the two eventually developed some mutual understanding of wildness.
Q: Can Dante swim? A: Dante thinks that with something as small as swimming, you just need to learn! [t/n: Dante dodges the question here and neither confirms nor denies whether he can swim, just says that anyone can learn. knowing how he is, he's probably being ambiguous because he doesn't want to admit he can't.]
Q: How many darlings has Blade made? A: Because Blade's favorite is cute things, it's infinitely increasing...... [t/n: 'darlings' as in the goofy little statue guys]
Q: Has Rei always been in the Water Territory? Has he moved before? A: Rei doesn't have a fixed home, he moves regularly. The room in the Water Territory is just one of his hiding places, it used to be an abandoned house.
Q: Does Rei eat when he's experimenting? A: He'll eat if he remembers, if Father's there he'll also remind Rei.
Q: If Fluff Balls think Fluff Balls are cute, will they eat their own kind? A: They won't eat each other. If there aren't cute things around, the Fluff Balls will journey in search of them. [t/n: since when was eating cute things part of Fluff Ball lore...?]
Q: Where is everyone's erogenous zones? Q: Do the characters have personal clothes? A: Eiden: in his rebellious phase he liked dressing up, now he prefers simple, comfortable clothes. He has a changing room at Aster's house, and every event he'll absorb the local trends and design outfits that fit Klein aesthetics and seasons. Yakumo: aside from traditional snake yokai attire, Yakumo's clothes are almost entirely bought by his grandparents. Edmond: because he's nobility, he has a lot of clothes. Olivine: because he dedicated his life to the priesthood, Olivine doesn't have many personal clothes. Quincy: he has few clothes. Most of them are made by him, so they're rare. Kuya: he likes trendy and new stuff, so he has a lot of accessories. Garu: it was only after he started living with Aster that he started getting more clothes (Aster and Eiden buy a lot of clothes for him). Blade: he'll wear whatever people give him, and he looks good in everything. Dante: he doesn't like wasting money, but as the Sun Lord, he has special outfits for important occasions. Rei: it's fine as long as it's wearable, he prioritizes ease of movement. Aster: prefers pretty, fancy designs, and especially likes clothes with cute accessories. Morvay: likes practical (easy to take off) clothes.

Been noodling idly on something about Aaravos's tiddies chest marking for a while, and since @raayllum just did a big update/summary of the "Aaravos's heart is in the Key" theory... I thought it might be time to put my little thinky-thoughts out there.
In short form: Aaravos's Star primal chest marking is not a natural feature of Startouch elves. It's a brand.
In long form: My initial question was "why, if we have the primordial Star symbol associated with the Celestial elves and with Aaravos himself, would he then have the primal Star symbol front-and-center on his literal body?"

None of the other primal elves have birthmarks or tattoos of the primal sources. (That we've seen. Runaan's might be on his butt or something.) "Actually, all elves are physically marked with the symbol of the primal they are connected to" would also be a very weird lore drop to have this late in the series. So why do Startouch elves have them?
Well, the answer is... they don't. This is a feature unique to Aaravos, and it's an important feature.

What do nearly all of these designs have in common? They don't have their dang tiddies out. We only see what would become the chest mark in the far right and teeny bottom second from the right designs on the second page. Note that in these designs, its nature as a hole or source of corruption is much more obvious—in the far right design, it's even spreading cracks or veins across his body in the same way that dark magic affects humans. (Thank god they didn't go with that single horn, though. The fanfics would have been obscene.) Either way, Aaravos's chest being constantly, readily visible wasn't a design factor until some point where it was determined that it needed to be, because of what would be there.
Furthermore, I'm convinced that Aaravos's design and the use of the Star primal symbol on his chest informed the design of the symbol itself:

Look how much basically none of the unused ones resemble the final design. The one they chose is a total outlier from the direction all the other designs take, but it's also the one that works really well as part of Aaravos. It's the only symmetrical design, and it's simple and solid where the others are busy in a way that would interact poorly with Aaravos's already star-studded skin. (I did a broader analysis of the primal source symbol designs a while back, if you want more.
So Aaravos and the Star primal symbol were designed in a symbiotic way, knowing that it would be a prominent feature for him. Let's take a look at it, then.
In every official appearance of the Star primal symbol, from Rayla's drawing of them to Claudia's spellbook, from the cover of Tales of Xadia to the Mystery of Aaravos titling... the Star primal symbol is in the opposite orientation from the one on Aaravos's chest.

Except in two specific instances: the book page with the Midnight Star poem, and the Key as held by the Orphan Queen in the flashback sequence:

Both of which are referencing Aaravos specifically, and in a specific way—as the one who gifted dark magic to Elarion, and as a deceiving manipulator.
But it's pretty clear that Aaravos's chest star is upside-down. Falling, you might even say. It has also always been that way: we see both in the s1e1 intro shot of the elves preparing to cast the humans out of Xadia and in the much more recent s4e3 flashback sequences that it has the same orientation even before he's imprisoned. It's also there (and I'm 90% sure in the same orientation) in the s6e1 photo leaks (spoilers).

This key element of Aaravos's design is a) not a natural feature, b) very specifically oriented, and c) has been with him as far back as we have thus far seen, to what we are generally assuming for the moment was his "fall."
So, in combination with the "something (literal heart or no) was removed from Aaravos when he "fell" and may be connected with the Key" theory: either in conjunction with or as part of that process, Aaravos was branded, on his body for all to see, with the mark of a fallen star. Then he absolutely owns it with his tits-out outfit, presumably out of sheer fabulous spite, and no one around him actually knows what it means—that he's a punished exile, a piece of himself or his power stolen and/or corrupted.

I am BEYOND thankful for all of you. Not just for your overwhelming support of me and my art but for your own fearless creations. For your kindness, openness, and willingness to listen to each other and grow as people, creators, and content consumers. The world is overwhelming sometimes. These past few years, maybe even more overwhelming than most. And I know we don't all always agree, but I know sometimes that's just the way *family* is. Be kind to one another. Support one another. Forgive one another. And stay passionate for the things that bring you joy; no one else's opinion need necessarily change it.
I don't know what 2023 has in store for us, but I know there will be art, fandom, and new adventures. Take care of yourselves. Drink your water. And embrace the possibilities.

Women of Xal II: Delayed Indefinitely

The team has discussed it further, and we have certainly come to the same, overwhelming agreement: we're shelfing the series. A long list of reasons can be found in this Tumblr post, but in short: To survive and even thrive, this series is not the way to go. I'm fighting debt to this day -- all to make sure the game's quality was as good as it was. So until the game is profitable and the fandom legitimately grows, or at the very least there's an investor with $50k to spend on a visual novel, it's financially and emotionally folly to fight against such a devastating upstream battle. So here's what we're going to do going forward...

I have personally noted that an all PoC cast is overwhelmingly great and fun for my spirits, but objectively proven to chase away income I need to eat, get medical attention, and not stress loved ones. Lesson learned.

AlrightEros: Backburner as it needs more income than we can spare at the moment. We do however see the potential in it from both a passionate and financial standpoint, however!
PT's DollMaker: We were putting it all together right around the time AI took over and decreased demand for commissioned art of actual effort everywhere. That's just a discouragement I have to get over and we'll try to release the app for it.
Xynthology: ...Did you know, that tabletop rules are harder to balance than one might think?! Costs may be the least of our concerns here. I'm still rebalancing nonsense to this day. This day!

Definitely a "completely fallen off the horse" moment for me, but I do intend to get back on it with a clearer, stronger vision and the same ferocity that saw to the completion of "Women of Xal". I promise we'll keep providing unique, diverse characters that range from Xjena's chill vibes to Clanice's esoteric problems that I initially thought only I could relate to. But right now I really do need to sit down and figure out if the stories I want to tell -- the way I want to tell them -- is at all something the world will ever embrace. Because if it's not, I need to sort out how to proceed for a company dependent on the exact opposite.

something different - a concept for a Volta do Mar skill portrait
Ok. So,

I'm usually not great at knowing what is and isn't common knowledge, but I feel like I need to explain this one. So here's my entire thought process with evidence.
Transcribing what Charlie is pointing at:

Official merch indicates Kim has his own set of skills unique to Harry's - Volta do Mar.

Volta do Mar is a navigation technique wherein a traveller strategically enters a current so as to be spit out in a desired direction. At first glance, the technique appears counter-intuitive since travellers have to veer far off-course to reach the "good" currents. More than just going with the flow, the technique requires navigators to be completely at mercy to the flow. A feather on the wind. And Kim does this quite a bit when he (reluctantly) surrenders himself to Harry's unusual Detect-niques.

Volta do Mar is an in-universe technique used to survive the mental toll from navigating the pale. So we know that this universe's version of Volta do Mar is also used in navigation. Mental navigation.
SO. Navigation. Pale. Feather on the wind. Kim Kitsuragi. The Volta do Mar skill has to look like an aerostatic. Like, it has to. And the model aerosratic concept art from the artbook [image 4] kinda looks like a face already so stealing that, thanks.
But how to visually tie that back to navigating the currents...

So pale travel is made possible with an aerostatic and some radio waves. This sort of counteracts the "at mercy to the flow" description I used earlier as it gives the navigator more control, but this makes the comparison a better fit for Kim anyway, since he often does step in to set Harry back on course. So lets give the aerostatic creature a hand and have it physically shove the radio waves into a basic representation of the pale. I'm not a writer so heavy-handed metaphor it is 😎 (that wasn't a pun).
I don't necessarily believe Kim's skills present themselves as eldritch gremlins like in Harry's head, but what if.

Nomura Design Path
Apologises for the slight delay on this, health issues cannot be helped. Storyboards from Just Add Water will be crossposted tomorrow.
While there is a solitary addition in the artbook where her human form has swepy bangs instead of a fringe and wearing gloves, we're fairly lucky in that there's a fair amount of Nomura's concepts are online! This one by Headless Studios is the earliest so it's unknown if she was a hit the ground running after being redesigned from The Crooked Man or there was anything else prior.
Her weapon choice being swords seemed to settle fairly early though and were basic katana at the time. Her hair style, limbs, belt and horns appear to have been the biggest back and forth until settling on a combination.

Continuing with my plans about Carmen Sandiego:
Next year will mark 5 years since its premiere. And truly as an illustrator, I really admire all the work behind the series. I'm seriously thinking about talking to Duane Capizzi and Chromosphere and whoever I can (if anyone knows who, please, inform me). What for the moment I think can be done is to show the IMMENSE interest of not only fans, but also people. from the artistic medium and series development show support.
How you can help me at this moment?
Please, in this publication write how much you would like to have Carmen Sandiego's Artbook and/or how it would help you in your career as an illustrator/animator or any area within animation in the who are working/studying/interested. I want to show all this information to Duane and whoever is needed. I will do everything I can to make it happen (and in case it can't, well, at least we did everything we could and we didn't leave with the intention of having tried) Please, if possible, inform everyone who they can. ZeroHar anthology - more updates
We've reached 10 contributors to the Zero and Harlock anthology! Special thanks to: @tadashidumba @aube-in-arcadia @deuxlitresdeux @neoarcadia @remyfrenchrat @mimmixerenard @missilemarz @casquetteecharpe and Melancholia for joining!
Just to recap, it's a black and white 7x10in book, so please keep that in mind when submitting art (no dark background please, and light colors for a good grey conversion). Other than that, I have no real restrictions, just make it ZeroHar and everyone's gonna be happy. Front and back cover in color by the very talented @remyfrenchrat and @deuxlitresdeux!

Almost April already, huh? Time does really fly when you are busy. If February promised to be a stressful month for me and the team, March has been hell let loose. Our second trimester has ended as of today and our plan of action is to do as many things as we can during April, as we will hopefully have less workload from our master.
Without further ado—let's see what we managed to do this month!

Fixing sprites has still been one of our priorities. Truth is our master is doing a good job at teaching us how to do things better, and the eyes that once did those sprites are not the same watching them now. One of our bigger struggles is the lack of personal—we are literally four people doing our best with our daily lives while also being in charge of whole departments, and that is a bit crazy sometimes because there's a lot to do. I hope we can hire some help for the full game, because I don't want us all to crunch forever :').
Following the character art train of thought, this month we will also be giving priority to finishing at least one of our key art / promotional art pieces. Raquel is already working on polishing the sketch and we hope we can finish it soon to really start having a solid package of key art to represent us and our game.

Ahá! Remember last month when we said Raquel and I were working on some LiL backgrounds for a master assignment? Well, they are looking pretty good! We got rid of one forest background during the prologue outline process to alleviate some workload, but we seized the opportunity to bring it back! We won't be showing that one yet as we want to finish it and make an individual post for it, but you can have a look at this one instead!

Not too many news from the writing department this month. I'm going full speed with the fixes and editing the demo script like I planned, and I hope to have everything ready next month, but we'll see how things go. The changes to the script are being very beneficial to the general pace of the prologue. We want to get to the juicy part as soon as possible and have as much content of the LIs as we can, right?
The main lore document is still on the works too, but, dare I say it, I'm very happy with it! I'm secretly hoping we can offer the lore book as a physical reward for our future kickstarter, but that's still far away in the future. The artbook is our main priority!

This month we have also focused on something really special and important that sadly we won't be revealing until it's done because, well, it's in the making, and no one wants to see it all ugly and in progress, right? But we are working very hard and are very excited to be able to show it soon! Agh!
Also, our GUI is almost, almost completely finished! Only the title screen is left, so we are leaving you a preview of another screen right below. Our designer is once again doing an impeccable job.

It has been an okay-ish month for us. Very stressful because of our master; there's definitely a lot of excitement we have been bottling up as we found ourselves unable to work on LiL like we wanted to. I hope that April, or at least the beginning of it (before the last trimester of our degree starts getting serious and unhinged, which I'm afraid will happen) proves to be productive and enough to at least tie up some loose ends. The team needs a couple of days to rest, but we are ready to get back on track and do as much as we can this next month.

Hi hello I just popped by to tell you just how much I absolutely LOVE your art. The dynamic poses, the color, your shapes, you’re very much an inspiration to me for my own art. I was curious if you’d be willing to share your own inspirations/process in drawing? No need to if you don’t feel like it though. Again, thank you for sharing your art with the world.
Gosh, I'm not sure where I'd even start for that...
I don't think I can get into process atm because it changes so much in such tiny ways all the time. I have a basic skeleton of a process, but the rest is all over the place.
As for insperations:
I follow many many artists online and have picked up many small things just from looking at their work and trying to "reverse engineer" their process in my head.
I've noticed I tend to subconsciously "study" artists just by thinking "how do I draw this? Oh this artist drew it that way! Lemme try..." and I do that many many times while drawing.
Example: I look at the way an artist draws hands, then I look at my own hand and try and mimick the position in the artwork.
I study both and try to connect the dots between them. I feel the way my hand moves and the way the bones and muscles flex and relax.
I try and draw broad shapes, then the underlying mechanics of the hand, then I finish things by drawing what we actually end up seeing on the surface.
I dont draw the bones and muscles of a hand and then the skin just to be clear! I just try and keep them in mind as a draw the outlines.
Like a sculpture having a "skeleton" made of two bits or wire. I don't draw the skeleton, I draw the rough blueprint of where everything goes in quick simple lines. Then I build the "clay" on top.
I don't go that in depth every time but it helps to stop and "be more considered" if you have the time and energy.
Now that I think about it, watch sculpting videos!
It's a very similar process to drawing but 3d instead of 2D! I recommend clay sculpture but I'm sure 3d modeling has similar principles too, even if a very different approach overall.
Here are some channels I recommend:
For cute character dioramas with ridiculous fidelity while being very stylised
For impressive fake food that really shows just how much of an illusion art is
For amazing Dino statues with an eye for detail and convincing naturalism
For 2d artists I follow current professional and/or hobby artists, or even old masters who's work is archived in artbooks and social media accounts. All ranging a wide variety or styles, cute, horror, cartoon, realist, ect... and most importantly, the styles wich aren't as easily definable.
The variety of influences is great! As long as you figure out how to pick and dissect the elements that drew you to the work and how to apply your findings to your own work.
My biggest inspirations as a kid where animation (Disney, pixar, ghibli, ect...), manga, Belgian/French comics my dad had as a kid.
I didn't have the patience or means to learn to animate, but these comics had so much life and motion in their panels! I always found American comics really stiff and more difficult to read because of the detail and "realism". I know American comic art can be very expressive and fluid, but for my undiagnosed eye/brain issues...

They where literally easier to read.
That comic cover takes me a good few seconds to dissect and process, whereas the two examples above it are instant.
I'm terrible at studying from life due to my poor eyesight and spacial awareness issues, also I have ADHD so, not only is the information my eyes are giving to my brain suboptimal, but my brain is also terrible at processing and reconstructing that information.
Also tracing is a valid way of studying btw, that's how I learnt as a tot and it can be great to try and reverse engineer a finished peice and break it down to it's construction.
Obviously it's not the same as building something from scratch but we're talking within the realms of practice.
I also started trying to "re-learn" some art fundamentals in ways that work better for me, and it's been massively helpful.
I'm already working with fuzzy simplified abstractions of the world around me, so it's horrible trying to see accurately and THEN re-simplify it onto paper.
So something that has helped a lot and I mean A LOT with teaching my brain art basics in a digestible, step by step way, has been:
ART ACADEMY for the DS!
It's great for walking you through art fundamentals in a way that is digestible and no where near as overwhelming as just jumping straight in to a massive, complex, digital art programme.
It gets all the fuss of materials and subject and reference out of the way and let's you just focuse purely on the process of making art itself.

This is all with the original DS version!
On a tiny screen with very primitive approximations of pressure sensitivity and no opacity or pen size options.
It mimics traditional art making in the sense that you make what you can with what you have and that limitation allows you to focuse on practice rather than get overwhelmed and over correct everything digitally.
These where tiny, crunchy, microcosmic, simplifications of digital art making back in 2009!!!
It's so refreshingly accessible and manageable.
I haven't even started the newer 3ds game that came out.
So if anyone reading is struggling with their art I highly recommend this little art exercise giver! It's helped me a lot.

ohhh i really liked that fic excerpt you posted!! one thing that really caught my eye was how you described akechi having friendly connections at school (even though they're all built on lies and pretenses). i feel like that's something missing in a lot of other fanfiction on him, he probably would establish meaningless but society-approved links with other people and limit his curt attitude towards others. granted that might be more difficult once he gets into high school and establishes himself as a detective prince, since his semi-celebrity status would probably serve to make him less approachable..... but then again he could deliberately set himself as approachable despite his status? what do you think? i really enjoy all of your metas, thank you for writing and sharing <3
Thank you, anon! And YEAH, that was something I particularly noticed. In confidant 2, you can ask Akechi if he has friends:
Joker 友達がいない? Do you have no friends?
Akechi プライベートで会いたい人ってこと? puraibetto de aitai hito tte koto? As in, people I'd actively choose to see in my free time? As in, people I'd want to spend my free time with?
Akechi そういう意味なら君の言う通り、友達はあまりいないかな。 If that's what you mean, then no, I suppose I don't have many.
That's startlingly early on. It's like he's baiting Joker with this—who he's certainly observed out of the Metaverse, as well as inside it. "This guy collects people, he likes to feel needed, the sucker. So I'll let him collect me, and the rest will be easy". Oh, Akechi, if you only knew.
There's meant to be Word of God that Akechi has a very wide social circle, too—I need to be more careful about keeping track of this shit, lol. But the picture I got was that an awful lot of people think they're friends with Akechi, but he never thinks they are, and he never treats them as friends. I'm sure he has contacts pouring out of his ass, but the truth, given who and how he is, is clearly that he wouldn't want to spend time with any of those people on a bet. In the artbook, his personal trait is that he "gets distracted in conversation"—he doesn't listen to people when they talk to him, they're predictable; they bore him; he doesn't need to listen. He drifts off. The great thing about Joker, from the start, is that Joker does not bore him.
Also, don't overlook that Akechi's detective prince celebrity status is very recent. A lot of people think he's been famous for years, but actually his rise to fame overlaps with canon; his detective schtick goes on for years, but the celebrity angle seems very recent on 6/10. The interviewer even says "we brought him back because you liked him so much", and none of the PTs recognise him.
Akechi really only gets so famous because the Phantom Thieves (and Dad, of course, and let's not overlook Yaldabaoth) make him famous. Ann complains about this several times, the way he rides their coattails to fame.
As far as how Akechi behaves with e.g. his classmates at school, I think he comes and goes. He has that almost airheaded manner, sometimes, charming people, winking at them; I reckon he turns that on and off like a tap, like the way he flirts with Joker in the early confidant only to turn it off when he knows him better—when he likes him more and starts to confide in him. Overall, though, I'd tend to write his manner as disinterested—he wants to seem like a privileged high-achieving boy, not a sociopath. He wants attention, he wants people to notice him, but he doesn't want these boring nobodies clinging to him. He prefers to be alone, but he seems like a social butterfly—and of course, in high school, his "work" makes that so much easier.
If you talk to him, though, you probably go away liking him, and thinking he likes you. Could he get a date if he wanted one? Could he call people to hang out with, if he needed to? You bet your ass. He doesn't need attention from his peers in high school, though—he's getting it from Shido. He's getting recognition for his fake detective work. And his real job, his night job, alienates him further by its nature—it builds a sense in him that he's the one with power, far above the insects and sheep around him—ultimately the one in control, even as he knows he's being controlled.
tl;dr Akechi is not hurting for a social life in canon; he doesn't need or want one, and he's contemptuous of people who think that shit matters.

I MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO 30! And wow, this year is flying by! I figured I should give you guys an update on the latest.
First of all, Alex wrote a blog post on the making of Band Camp Boyfriend's soundtrack. It's a really cool read! Check it out here!
Second...as it turns out, it's tough to motivate to work on a game that's already out! I've been making the most of my summer, too, but once the cold weather sets in, I'll buckle back down and finish fixing up some of the bugs. All that's left to do is put in the few voice clips that were missed and figure out the font problem, which seems to be spawning more bugs from messing with it. My goal is to update the game before the year is over.
I actually did try to sit down and do the voice clips this past weekend so I would have some good news for you, but my back is killing me and sitting in a chair makes it worse. (TT_TT)
Once the game is updated, our next goal is to release a digital artbook/soundtrack DLC. I've never put together an artbook so I may have to do some research first! Initially, I wanted to accomplish this by the end of the year, but my secondary goal is to get it out before Band Camp Boyfriend's one year anniversary.
Beyond that...comes the difficult conversation of whether we can justify a sequel for Band Camp Boyfriend or if we move onto our next project. I've already agonized over what to do, the choice is gonna be a real heartbreaker either way, but we definitely need to wait longer before making our final decision. And we'll keep enjoying our time off from game development as well!

Infinite Blue - 2022 Wrap up
As the year comes to a close, our update this month is going to be a look back at what all we've accomplished in 2022!
Demo Release
We had two big goals this year, and one of them was the demo release. The demo came out on April 30th, and the community response was honestly so amazing and supportive! It's been so cool to see so much fan-created content such as fanart, fanfiction, memes, and so many other creative works. Last I looked, the demo has been downloaded over 20k times. It was great to finally have you all meet the boys after over a year of game dev 💙

Our Kickstarter is funded
The Kickstarter for Infinite Blue launched on May 17th and was funded in less than three days. This was of course a huge deal because if it had not been funded, IB would either no longer be in production or have a release date far, far in the future. Thanks to all of you, this game is happening!

I'm also pleased to say that the merch side of Kickstarter rewards have been fulfilled, and now the guys are no longer 2D. I have plans to open a merch shop in the future, so those who weren't able to back the KS can still get keychains, stickers, button pins, and more.

Patreon
This year we launched our Patreon, which has been huge in supporting Velvet Fox Games. Because of the Patreon, I've been able to work with a marketer, offer monthly illustrations to our supports, and cover other business expenses. I'll also be able to (slowly) work on a second game.

We also started a Discord server, which I was a bit nervous about, but the community there is so friendly and nice - shoutout to all of you! Good timezone 💖

Continued production of Infinite Blue
And of course, production has continued for Infinite Blue. New sprites, CGs, chatroom art, stickers, updated GUI and programming, finishing the writing - it's all in the works!
I still can't give a definitive release date, but I'm going to try as hard as I can to get this game out in 2023.
2023 Goals
Release the game: This is the major goal!!
Fulfill remaining KS backer rewards: There's still digital rewards that need to be worked on, such as the fantasy booklet and artbook.
Finish writing game #2: This game is already in the works!

I will be taking a monthly update break for January 1st, so the next big update will be on February 1st.
