The Invaders by Henry Kuttner
Like the Hounds of Tindalos but with an apocalyptics
Interesting that Cthullhu is mentioned in a neutral tone here, listed along other benevolent/neutral gods, including the “hero of the hour”
I haven’t read much Derleth’s works, but this story does use a similar idea of intentionally summoning a less hostile entity to deal with the threat. (I also have a fondness for Cthuga being summoned to fight the Dweller in Darkness, but that’s really only because I can accept even a powerful entity like Cthuga leaving when finished just like the star vampires do , and I find Nylarothotep being attacked by an Angry Sun (like SMB3) really enjoyable. )
And yet I’m okay with it, because the savior at the end, Vorvadoss seems completely uninterested in the humans, and gives them no notice. That they are saved in a way that worsens their mental trauma shows a lack of care from the entity.
Vorvadoss doesn’t even seem to notice the humans until after they closed the gateway, and its just a brief glance before leaving. Vorvadoss’s description seems different than what I see in wikis, rather than being literally cloaked, silver mists shroud it. Instead of covered in fire, there’s just small flames crawling around its face.
Its also the fact that I find interesting is that the threat isn’t a singular “god”, but a race of entities. And they aren’t smited as the effects of their spell to open the way to Earth nullified.
I do wonder why their city seems somewhat designed for those crawling on the ground if they’re floating in the vision.
Then again they don’t seem to fly so much as float motionlessly in the glimpse of their city, and others are resting on top of buildings. Meanwhile others are quite.
for once we see a bustling nonhuman city in one of these stories, rather than a long dead or dormant one.
The invaders seems quite similar to the flying polyps in their wind control, but they also seem to have a connection to fog and cold.
What’s interesting is they seem to send out long scouting sensory appendages to scout with,and also in the city they are described as having reptilian appendages when locomoting.
