Azalin Reviews: Darklord Viktra Mordenheim
Tumblr media
Darklord: Viktra Mordenheim Domain: Lamordia Domain Formation: 683 BC Power Level: 💀💀⚫⚫⚫ (2/5 skulls) Source: van Ricthen’s Guide to Ravenloft (5e)
Adam, the creation of Dr. Victor Mordenheim, was the Darklord of Lamorida until the most recent report regarding the Misty Realms. Adam was cursed to never acquire the acceptance he longed for and to always be tied to the Dr. Mordenheim as much as he longed to be known separately from the amoral scientist. Even Lamordia barely recognized Adam as its Darklord and he was doomed to dwell alone within the caverns of the Isle of Agony. Now he has been discarded completely. A fitting end for our 'monster'.
Dr. Viktra Mordenheim has taken on the mantle of the Darklord of Lamorida. Viktra has a similar history and persona to that of Victor – a highly irrational distaste of the arcane arts and the bedside manner of a particularly callus cockroach. She taught herself medicine at a young age and continued on as a renowned researcher amongst the academically inclined. Those that seek a career in medicine often do so out of some infallible need to care for and help others. This was not the case for Viktra. She did so out of a need to sate her own curiosity and through her studies, convinced herself that she alone could conquer death. Now, I doubt she was referring to Lowellyn, but even as non-threatening as he is, I’m certain Death could easily defeat this ‘doctor’ if he was given the opportunity to roam free of Necropolis. Which he won't. As far as I'm concerned, Lowellyn is in a permanent 'time out'.
Pursuing this new obsession, Dr. Mordenheim hired grave robbers to obtain fresh corpses for her so she could attempt to force life into their rotting flesh. This is how she met Elise – a young woman devoted the body snatching. Though not explicitly stated in Dr. van Richten's report, one can conclude that the two were romantically involved.
In time, Elise contracted a wasting disease with no known cure. Now, the rational solution to such a disease, particularly for a genius at medicine, is to begin researching and developing a cure. Mordenheim, on the other hand, poured herself into bringing life into the already dead. Fresh corpses were no longer enough and Viktra began using living victims as well – killing them and reviving them and killing them again so she could obsessively study the exact moment of death.
If these deaths answered her question, it remains unknown. More likely her miraculous cure for Elise was the result of divine intervention, much like it had been for Victor Mordenheim when he ‘created’ Adam.  To end Elise’s disease and bring her back from the dead, Viktra created an artificial organ known as the Unbreakable Heart. The inept constables, of whatever land this version of Mordenheim originates from, finally realized that the thousands of missing corpses and people were Mordenheim’s doing and interrupted her at the exact moment she sewed the Unbreakable Heart into Elise’s chest. In her struggle to escape, Mordenheim’s lab filled with smoke and electricity. The last thing she saw before she was knocked unconscious was the Unbreakable Heart glowing beneath Elise’s flesh.
Viktra awoke in Lamordia as a well-known and celebrated scientist. She continues her research into life and death and her relentless pursuit of Elise. For, though she has tried countless times, Viktra cannot recreate the Unbreakable Heart. Again, I theorize this is because the life the device gave Elise was not Viktra’s doing, but that of a powerful, outside force such as a deity or perhaps even our tormentors.

Well... the latest Session of Curse of Strahd was interesting for Balthazar ;-;
Lets just say resurrecting a long dead Dragon with your Dark Power gift comes with eight corpse shaped consequences and deep trauma as you realise you were possessed for messing with fate...

Trivial.
It had all been such a waste.
Doctor Mordenheim looked down at the table, nose crinkling into a sneer as she flicked one of the internal components away from her. The heavy, unusual material thudded into the frost covered body, before rolling back and falling onto its more uneven side.
However much time had passed, it had not been nearly enough.
However much time had passed, it had been far too long.
When those Whalers had brought their haul from the abandoned estate all those months ago, she should have known to just turn them away. She should have known that nothing they had found could have been anything close to worth her time. Her efforts should have been focused towards what they always were; she should have been searching for Elise.
But that ‘woman’…
Doctor Mordenheim drew a long, focused breath, eyes tracing the figures outline as it lay across her workspace.
This creation was something. She knew that much. Some sort of advanced automaton that nearly compared to (or even rivaled, she admitted in particularly soft moments) her own inventions and experiments. It was close, so very close, to being something that could outpace her own magnum opus. Close enough that the potential to surpass it felt actually tangible for the first time in a very long while. It was beautiful, she was beautiful. And yet…
Viktra blinked slowly, leaning forward and taking the body into her grasp, pulling it towards her by the hip and shoulder, examining it, eyes darting across features and symbols both of her own and alien design. It was right here, at the cusp of achievement! And yet…
And yet-!
Digging her nails into the flesh and grunting with disgust, Viktra raked the torso across her own equipment and papers, sending it careening onto the stonework of her office floor, expression flat as she discarded the thing so that it would be out of her sight. Idly, she rested her hand on the thigh that still remained atop the table, pinching her brow as she tried to collect her thoughts.
The perfect entity had not been achieved, not yet, not until it had walked from her lab. She had hoped this ‘woman’ would be of comparable use as Elise, but all she ever did was prattle on about interests in The Sleeping Beast and the abominations therein. Corrupt, mutated things that were good for parts and nothing more. Why bother studying such things in such a habitat, when cutting them open would achieve faster, visible results.
She wasn’t even useful in finding Elise, perhaps the one thing that would have made the alliance worth pursuing.
A shame, really.
Viktra rolled the leg back and forth across the table, teeth clenched as she imagined what would have been possible were-
“ssssssss…”
Hm?
Viktra cocked her head to the side a bit, casting half of a glance towards the back wall of her office. Various tools and prizes rest upon hooks and mounts, and one such tool seemed to be looking at her, eyes glowing that beautiful green as brightly as the day she had first discovered her.
“Oh, awake again?” The doctor pushed herself up from her work slab, lifting a gloved hand from the thigh as she briefly examined the palm of her bloodied glove.
“You’ve been coming to with a noted frequency,” The doctor hummed, shuffling a few of her notes, peering down at them briefly for any quick insight that could be found. Dissatisfied, she finally pried herself away from her workspace entirely to stride towards the mounted head amongst her work tools.
The head was, as it always had been, that of a young woman. Skin grey and smooth with a fullness that was to be commented on for something detached from its body so long ago. Above her jet black locks were small little fragments of glass, which as ever occasionally sparked with a green light that fascinated the mind.
It did not, however, confound. She had managed to determine the source of it long ago.
“Go on, speak up,” Viktra stated flatly, “make use of this time you have. Don’t be wasteful.”
A moment or two passes, and just as quickly so too does the Doctor’s patience.
“Speak,” she commands, taking the chin and pulling the head up to look into its eyes properly.
The eyes flutter for a moment, vibrant green eyes stuttering between focused and unfocused, before finally the lips part a bit.
“ssssssssorryyy I am ssssorryyyy I-“
Viktra grunts and drops the head, letting it clatter pathetically against the wall.
“Nothing useful to be extracted from an apology. If you’re going to continue to pathetically cling to these impressive bouts of consciousness, some insight would certainly be more useful.”
Viktra turned away from the head, stepping over the body parts strewn across her floor as she made her way out from this particular workspace.
She still had some blood to squeeze from this stone yet.

Serenity Rosemead (Warlock, Blue/Black/Red)
-Born to a priest of Torm who abandoned her at a church where she was abused. A blue dragon burned down the church and took her in when she started helping her. Now raised by this dragon as her child (and warlock) she seeks to free her mom as she's trapped in the city of Elturel in Descent Into Avernus.
-Despite devoutly worshipping Tiamat has zero beef with Bahamut and just wishes they could get along even though she will always side with Tiamat.
-Thinks of herself as a dragon first and tiefling second.
-Her magic is powered by her hoard, which in her case is what she deeply wants of familial and friendly love, meaning she gains power from friendship. Evil power.
-Has 11 knives on her person currently, and looking to add more.
Team Ravenloft (Wizard, Overall Blue/White/Black)
-Gabrielle von Brandthofen and her alters Alyssa Bluebreaker, Jazmine Dreamkeep, Red Bess (not pictured), The Banshee, Elvira (not pictured), and Angelica Heavens (not pictured) are members of a system. Gabrielle is the child of the Dark Lord Viktra Mordenheim and Elise, and is a Changeling. She died as a child from Viktra's repeated experiments on her, and was brought back to life after many years as an undead Banshee via two Angels, Penemue and Remiel, who are possessing her to give her guidance and help her learn arcane magic.
-Gabrielle is The Raven Queen's poor little meow meow, and she violently hates undead because of her time as one.
-Had a lumberjack chop off her own leg for the safety of everyone around her and got it replaced w a prosthetic, and was cursed to be Australian for an hour as a result.
-Once performed exploratory surgery on herself with a dagger
-Football kicked a priest's head into The Mists to help someone heal emotionally.
All questions asked about them will be answered!

Lord Soth Reviews Monsters: Brain, Living (Rudolph von Aubrecker)
Tumblr media
Horror Factor: 👻 👻 👻 👻 This would’ve been five ghosties, but the art decision to give that brain a face is a little on the nose. Because that brain has a nose Rudolph von Aubrecker is a unique encounter in the domain of Dementlieu, though his origins actually begin in the domain of Lamordia. Rudolph began his life as a pampered aristocrat, the youngest son of the ruling von Aubrecker family of Lamordia.  As I’m told young men often do, he decided to celebrate his 18th birthday with a rager on a boat, except that apparently he forgot to hire a crew and the ship was swamped and blown onto the rocks.
Rudolph was the only survivor, and even then, just barely; he was found by Alexis Wilhaven, a graduate student working for Dr. Mordenheim.  Alexis made the mistake of taking Rudolph to the bad doctor, who promptly decided he was beyond saving... then decided to use him as an experiment.  The Dirty Doctor used Rudolph’s brain in an experiment in maintaining living tissue outside of the mechanisms of the human body - an experiment that by Mordenheim’s standards was a success.  Von Aubrecker’s brain not only survived, but began to develop further, gaining mass in the tank.  Unfortunately further experiments to induce psionic potential in the brain didn’t seem to work, so Mordenheim decided the experiment had run its course and send Aubrecker down the sluice - but when the time came to disconnect the life support system Mordenheim was psychically restrained from pulling the plug. The 2E version of Mordenheim, being more closely based on Victor Frankenstein, was horrified at the brain’s ability to psychically control him - in the 5E version Doctor Viktra doesn’t really do horrified, so she’d probably have been thrilled at the success of her experiment but not so thrilled that it was messing with her head.  But that’s a digression.
Either way, Mordenheim found themselves suddenly inspired to labor on a new and improved life support device for the brain, not even sure what the end result would be - and when the device was complete von Aubrecker and Alexis Wilhaven promptly disappeared.  Mordenheim... honestly didn’t really give a crap that their graduate student had just absconded with a psionic brain in a vat, there was more important work to do, which is in character for both versions of the doctor.
Von Aubrecker and Alexis made their way to the domain of Dementlieu, where they set up a laboratory dedicated to Rudy’s comfort and the enhancement of his burgeoning powers.  In the original 2E setting, von Aubrecker discovered the machinations of the hypnotist (and Darklord of Dementlieu) Dominic D’Honaire when he attempted to take telepathic control of the governor of Port-a-Lucine.  The two became hated enemies, engaging in a shadow war through mental catspaws - von Aubrecker’s overt mind control against D’Honaire’s subtle manipulations.
Von Aubrecker has become something of a supervillain - known only as “The Brain” he has cast a wide web of agents and thralls across whichever domain he dwells in as he works to further his own ends.  Alexis Wilhaven has become his complete thrall, completely subjugated to the will of the Living Brain.
In 5E, von Aubrecker never left Lamordia, instead merely relocating elsewhere in the domain.  As Baron von Aubrecker, he is now the titular ruler of Lamordia, though in this role he clashes with Dr. Mordenheim, the domain’s Darklord, who he resents for TURNING HIM INTO A BRAIN IN A JAR. This makes sense, as he is a poor fit for the re-imagined version of Dementlieu and not a great fit as a foe for Sadira.   Instead, he exists more as a stand-alone villain and possibly as a reminder of how twisted and negligent Viktra Mordenheim really is.  He also has the Krang-inspired motivation of building a new body that suits his ego and further augments his enormous psionic powers.
Statistically, the Brain was never given a complment of 2E psionic powers - if one did, they would likely be considerable.  Instead, he was given a devastating telepathic blast attack that did more damage to beings of higher Intelligence, and was resisted by force of will (represented by a character’s Wisdom score). Von Aubrecker also had a number of innate spell-like abilities representing his mental powers of manipulation and domination.  His telepathic awareness made him impossible to be surprised (at least, by anything with a mind).  He had few overt telekinetic powers, but the one he had manifested was extremely powerful - he could project a bubble of telekinetic energy that functioned as both a globe of invulnerability and a wall of force around himself, three times a day.
In combat, von Aubrecker will use his psychic powers to stun-lock the party and turn it against itself, likely while throwing minions against it at the same time.  He will target the highest-intelligence (and ergo most dangerous) characters, such as wizards, with his telepathic blast.  Though of course, ideally von Aubrecker will never confront his enemies face-to-lobe, instead acting through proxies and catspaws whenever possible. Von Aubrecker would also make an interesting shadow patron for a group of player characters, including being a good tutor for Aberrant Mind sorcerers, Soulknife rogues, or even as a patron for a Warlock of the Great Old One.
In all seriousness I can think of some ways to spiff up this story.  I would probably change things around - instead of Alexis being the burnt-out husk enslaved to Aubrecker, I would have them be enraptured with the Brain, torn between the horrible things they’re doing and their love for Rudolph.  Who could say no to those lobes? I would, perhaps, have Rudolph even reciprocate those feelings, but be obsessed with mastering his burgeoning psionic powers and finding himself a new body that suits both his massive ego and gives Alexis the beautiful lover Rudolph feels they deserve.  But I’m a sucker for a twisted love story. Another way you could use von Aubrecker as a horrific antagonist, is have him target a particularly comely PC as an ideal new body, perhaps leaving that PC as a brain in a vat - and in order to stop von Aubrecker and undo the procedure, the PCs will need to solicit the help of the only other person in Lamordia with the scientific know-how to put things right, Dr. Mordenheim. And now, a joke I’m continuing to try to set Rudy and the Elder Brain up on a blind date but neither of them will commit They’re both of two minds about the whole thing Ha ha ha ha ha ha Edit: I wish I could draw, if I could I’d probably be doodling a picture of Rudolph and Alexis right now. I think I might ship it
