7 Unusual Tourist Attractions in London
Tumblr media
There is so much to see in London beyond the London Eye and Buckingham Palace. Naturally, London’s most popular spots are worthy of a visit and should not be overlooked. But, when staying in Hyde Park Corner hotels you can look forward to exploring some of London’s unusual tourist attractions.
London’s Smallest Police Station
London’s Smallest Police Station is located in the corner of Trafalgar Square near the Strand. It’s around the size of a phone box with an old-fashioned large lamp on top of the unit and narrow slits for windows. There is just enough space for one police officer to stand inside; it’s usually locked but you can peek inside.
Italian Gardens
Hyde Park is always popular but few tourists know about the Italian Gardens. These are located in the northern part of the park, far from the boating lake. Conceived as a gift from Prince Albert to Queen Victoria, the plot consists of fountains and statues. Grab an early breakfast in Bayswater London and then swing by first thing when the park is tranquil and the light is perfect for photography.
London’s urban farms
There are several little farms dotted around London where you will meet livestock and learn about modern-day agriculture. Farms are free to visit but donations are always appreciated and you can dine at the complex cafes or pick up a small souvenir. London’s urban farms include Vauxhall City Farm, Spitalfields City Farm, Stepney City Farm, and Surrey Docks City Farm.
Westminster Cathedral
Not to be confused with Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral is a Byzantine-style house of worship that sought inspiration from the mosques of Istanbul. You can visit the nave for free to ogle the splendid marble and mosaics. Do not miss this cathedral while staying at a hotel near Buckingham Palace.
River or canal kayaking
You can kayak either on the River Thames or on the Regent’s Canal. London Kayak Company conducts guided river tours in Central London with their night kayak being particularly special. On the other hand, Moo Canoes operate from Limehouse Basin and Hackney Wick from where you can self-paddle the canal ways.
Filming locations of London
Countless films and TV series have been filmed in London. One of the kookiest free things to do in London is to track down the spots where your favourite films were shot. Find William and Spike’s flat at 280 Westbourne Park Road from Notting Hill. Visit the Old Naval College at Greenwich and see where the finale of Thor: The Dark World was made. If you’re travelling with kids, lure them out of Central London hotels with triple rooms with the promise of seeing as many Harry Potter filming locations as possible.
Hampstead Ponds
Head to Hampstead Heath on a hot afternoon and you can plunge into natural ponds for a spot of wild swimming. There is a small fee to pay and you’re best booking a slot in advance. Take your pick from the women’s pond, men’s pond, or mixed pond. The water is deep so novice swimmers and children must take extra care.

'Bretagne' - Between 4 and 8 August 1858, the Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie visited Cherbourg. On their arrival, they inaugurated the railway line linking the town to Paris. The following day, 5 August, they welcomed Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who had been invited to view the opening of the Arsenal's second basin, called the Napoleon III basin. This is a French artist's representation of the Emperor, wearing the full-dress uniform of a French Admiral, receveing Queen Victoria on Board the French flagship, 'Bretagne', at Cherbourg for a banquet.

Hendrik Frans Schaefels - The sinking of the Vengeur -
Vengeur ("Avenger") was a first-rate 118-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, of the Océan type, designed by Jacques-Noël Sané. She was the first ship in French service to sport 18-pounder long guns on her third deck, instead of the lighter 12-pounder long guns used before for this role.
Laid down as Peuple in covered basin no.3 at Brest Dockyard in October 1793, she was renamed as Vengeur after the Bataille du 13 prairial an 2 in honour of the Vengeur du Peuple by a decree passed by the National Convention.
She was launched on 1 October 1803 and completed in February 1804. She was again renamed in March 1805, becoming Impérial.
She took part in the Battle of San Domingo on 6 February 1806. Severely battered by several British ships, most of her artillery out of order and without means to manoeuver, she was beached by her captain to prevent her sinking and capture. It took several days to evacuate her crew, of whom many were wounded; after a few days, British ships closed in and sent boats to capture those remained aboard and set fire to the wreck.
Hendrik Frans Schaefels or Henri François Schaefels, also known as Rik Schaefels and Henri François Schaefels (Antwerp, 2 December 1827 – Antwerp, 9 June 1904) was a Belgian Romantic painter, draughtsman and engraver known for his seascapes, cityscapes, genre paintings, landscapes with figures and history paintings. He worked in the Romantic style popular in Belgium in the mid nineteenth century and was highly esteemed in Europe for his representations of historic naval battles.
Belgium was in the grip of Romantic art at the time Schaefels started out on his artistic career. Belgian Romantic painters such as Gustaar Wappers (1803-1874), Nicaise de Keyser (1813- 1887), Edouard Hamman (1819-1888) and Gallait Louis (1810-1887) gained international success with their history paintings. These usually depicted glorious or famous events in the history of what became the state of Belgium, which had only recently been established as an independent country in 1830. Such historic themes were the favorite subjects of artists working in the years from 1830 to 1850.
Hendrik Frans Schaefels combined in his work this tradition of history painting and marine art. He excelled in his dramatic portrayals of naval battles and other historical events that took place at sea such as the Battle of Trafalgar, episodes from the wars between England and the Dutch Republic. His large compositions, with sizes varying from 2 to 9 meters long, often showed a pseudo-Baroque design. Schaefels painted both compositions depicting an entire naval battle as well as more anecdotal episodes depicting the action on the deck of a single warship such as in the Death of Nelson. For his naval battles he relied on historical literature and printed materials.
Schaefels also painted more recent and peaceful marine events such as the Queen Victoria on board the Royal Yacht, which depicts the 1843 visit of Ostend by Queen Victoria with her husband Prince Albert.

Hello Lavrentiy. I'm feeling nostalgic about london, I live in the north and haven't been back in a while. I was wondering if you'd do me the honour of describing your views or local walks you enjoy? An aesthetic to ponder: last year I was down there for work and I became captivated by the stunningly decadent number 38 bus. I'd just sit for that whole ride, gliding through the green of London Fields and the academic grandeur of Bloomsbury, all the way to the bright lights of Shaftesbury Avenue.
where do I even begin, lord. there are so many places I love in London, some much bigger or well-known than others. I’ll link to pictures on my blog (or include them) when I can! I suppose I can start with something inspired by your aesthetic, which is my own favourite bus route. I don’t manage to get it often because it’s a night bus, but when I’m out late enough I always get my ass up to Oxford Circus and catch the N22. the journey to where I live takes about an hour, and the route takes you through all the grand areas of London and some wonderfully leafy areas, too. There’s one point where it looks like you’re going down a country road: the road is narrow, the trees are on both sides, and you can hardly believe you’re in a huge city. on the other hand you have all the grander areas – the bus goes right through Berkeley Square, which some of my followers might recognise as the location for an incredibly unnerving haunting. then there’s Bond Street, Hyde Park, Knightsbridge, Sloane Square… all places full of grandeur and great architecture and wonderful restaurants – not to mention at that time of the night a lot of interesting drama to watch from the upper deck as all the drunks stumble out of the exclusive nightclubs, lol. you really get to see the best of London alongside all its chaos; there’s something kind of inappropriately hilarious about seeing all of these grand clubs and buildings, and a bunch of well-dressed men and women all throwing up among them.
another of my favourite places is definitely the Waterstone’s bookstore on Piccadilly. coming out of the underground and only having to walk a minute up to the biggest bookstore in Europe, and then knowing I can spend the entire day there? there’s an impossibly large amount of books and every subject I can think of has a shelf there; I can spend hours sitting on the floor in the Russian history section alone. then there’s a wonderful little café downstairs which, while admittedly on the expensive side, does the best sandwiches and iced coffees and chai lattes. most of my writing when I’m in London gets done in this café.
Tumblr media
there’s also a delicious restaurant on the top floor which had happy hour on cocktails every Monday through Saturday, where it’s buy one get one free. always fun to indulge a little there! I swear, every single time I go into that store I find myself wishing I was immortal just because of the sheer amount of books I want to read. nothing brings it home more than that place: endless books on every subject, reminding me just how much I have to read. it’s intimidating but also very inspiring.
nearby is St James’s Park, where I can often be found on sunny days.
Tumblr media
I’ve been wine drunk in that park more times than I can count; I’ve wandered through it endlessly in the dead of night, taking in the silence and marvelling at the fact I’m still somehow in one of the busiest cities in the world. there’s a bridge across the lake where you can see right up the length of it from both directions: Regent Street and Piccadilly and the Eye in one direction; the glittering lights of Buckingham Palace in the other, and all the grandeur of Whitehall not far away. back in the day, MI6 used to bring potential recruits to that bridge to give them the pitch and ask if they wanted to work as spies, because the bridge used to incite such awe and patriotism in them that they couldn’t say no. I can kind of see why, to be honest. it’s one of the grandest views in London, in my opinion, but my favourite view in London isn’t far from it: go out of St James’s Park and cross the Mall, and take the steps up to Regent Street.
Tumblr media
do this at the strange time between day and night; the dusk where the sky is a blue both bright and dark, and the soft pastel colours of the sunset are sinking just behind the buildings. the lights glitter and the street – the whole of which you can see from the steps, as it slopes gently uphill – looks absolutely ethereal. I’ve been admiring this view for years; I’ve taken endless photographs of it. still, it always takes my breath away, even if I just saw it twelve hours before.
this is getting long, so I’ll mention the final place I can’t leave out: my favourite museum in London, the Victoria & Albert. one of my favourite pictures of me was taken by my boyfriend there:
Tumblr media
I’ve been there so many times and if I add up all the hours I’ve spent in there it probably totals weeks. still, every single time I go, I find a gallery I haven’t been in yet. the vastness of it, the amount of things to see, the lighting, the peace of it all even when it’s busy, all those years of history just right there… I could wander around for hours, and I frequently do. there’s also the absolutely beautiful café, and the courtyard outside where you can sit and enjoy a drink, and the endless galleries and the heavy, peaceful silence you don’t often find outside of holy buildings. there sheer diversity of its atmospheres, too – from the dark, glittering lighting of stained glass and jewel encrusted furniture and jewellery and accessories;
Tumblr media
to the classical whites and beiges of endless statues and busts and basins and architecture, all of which just feel ancient;
Tumblr media
it’s incredible. it stays open late on Friday nights, too, meaning this atmosphere is even better – there’s hardly anyone around, and you can take your time and utterly lose yourself. the V&A has become the model for many museums and similar places in a few of my stories; its fingerprints are all over many of the scenes I’ve written, and I can only hope to come near to doing it justice.

Courtships and Orchids
Chapter Eight: Proposals, proposals
Masterlist
(seems like itv’s Victoria is my main inspiration but ok)
Tumblr media
Lafayette thought his heart had stopped for a moment when Y/N fell before his eyes. Her body was on the floor, unmoving, and the only thing on his mind was fear. He ran to her and gathered her in his arms. She was cold, so cold, but when he pressed his ear to her chest he recognised the slow thumping of her heart.
‘We need to take her back to the manor,’ he turned to the others and the former soldiers followed his order without a second thought. Hercules ran to fetch the coach and Gilbert’s valet, Alexander went to pay the bartender and John said he was going to find the town’s doctor.
Lafayette picked up Y/N and brought her outside. His carriage was ready, thank god, he wasted no time and climbed inside, holding Y/N’s small form to his chest. She was rapidly growing hot, her skin was sticky with sweat and her breathing was erratic.
‘She has fever!’ His voice trembled with worry.
‘John must be on his way with the doctor. We are almost there, mon ami, she’ll be all right.’
Alexander’s words were proved right when the carriage came to a stop and the door was opened by Albert whose face was contorted by fear. He looked at his daughter and let out a shaky breath. Gilbert told him to step aside so he could bring Y/N into the house. He then rushed past her cousins, past the staff members, past Jefferson. Monsieur Beauchamps pointed him in the direction of Y/N’s room and followed the Frenchman without another question. Lafayette knew he had about a thousand things to ask, but neither one had the strength, nor desire to discuss. There were more important problems at hand.
Inside Y/N’s room, Lafayette wasted no time and made his way towards the bed. Mary, who thankfully had kept her calm the entire time, hastily pulled the sheets so Lafayette could lower her down. They covered her and tucked her in tight. Y/N was violently shaking now and her skin was once again stone cold.
‘Where is the doctor?!’ Lafayette yelled, looking around the numerous faces gathered in the chamber.
John’s voice was heard down the hallway and growing louder, getting closer, ‘We’re here!’
He ran in the room and pushed people out of the way. Behind him came a slender, black-haired woman with an ivory dress to match her milky white skin. Her grey eyes observed Y/N’s form as if she were making an immediate examination.
‘This is not the doctor! Where is Dr Benedict?’ Jefferson exclaimed angrily.
‘Roger was indisposed,’ the woman replied calmly, ‘he sent me in his stead.’
‘I advise that you trust her.’ A handsome ginger man appeared right next to the tall woman. He spoke with a distinct Scottish accent. ‘My wife is an experienced healer. She can help the young lady Beauchamps.’
Thomas was about to protest, but Albert interrupted him, ‘Mr Jefferson, if you further obstruct this woman from healing my daughter, I will personally remove you from this estate.’
Jefferson was positively startled by the older man’s outburst and shut his mouth. The woman nodded in Monsieur Beauchamps direction, he simply took a step back so she could walk around the bed and sit on Y/N’s left side. Lafayette watched as the female healer pressed her knuckles to her forehead, then put her fingers on her neck, mumbling something to herself.
Upon feeling the wetness of her clothes, she said to Mary, ‘Help me undress her.’
The room suddenly got restless and the men politely excused themselves, then Angelica led her sister’s and Albert outside, trying to persuade him that he needed to calm his nerves.
Gilbert was about to turn around and leave, but the woman stopped him. ‘We’ll need an extra hand.’
He glanced at Y/N then back at the woman and nodded. She smiled at him and turned to her husband, ‘Jaime, get me a basin with cold water, some cloths and ask the family’s cook to brew some peppermint tea.’ The ginger-haired man - Jaime - bobbed his head and exited the room.
‘Help me lift her up,’ the woman instructed Lafayette who sat on the bed and put one arm around Y/N’s waist and the other behind her shoulders. Mary then helped remove her bodice and petticoat. Gilbert averted his eyes, instead looking at the healer who was starting to unfasten the corset’s strings. When the corset was off, the woman looked at Gilbert and whispered, ‘I am Claire.’
‘My name is Gilbert.’
‘Gilbert, are you her husband?’
‘I am her… she is- was my intended.’
‘We’ll have to work with that,’ she sighed. ‘Well, Gilbert, you are about to see more than you’ve bargained for, but I really do need you to hold her up while me and her maid remove her chemise. All right?’
Gilbert felt himself nod, although he felt his cheeks burn with embarrassment. After all no man in polite society was allowed to see woman without her clothes unless she was his wife.
Claire pulled the chemise while Mary was waiting with a fresh one. They changed the garment and discarded all the wet clothes. Just then Claire’s husband returned with everything she told him to fetch. She then wrapped one of the bigger towels around Y/N’s hair to dry it, then used a smaller one which she sank into the cold water and put it over Y/N’s forehead.
‘Gilbert,’ Claire turned to him, ‘lady Beauchamps has pneumonia. She is lucky that it’s nothing serious, but we’ll have to keep her in bed for a while. The wet towel will hopefully lower her body temperature and rid her of the fever. Now, the peppermint tea,’ Jaime held up a steaming cup and handed it to his wife, ‘is good for her throat. We’ll have to make her drink it from time to time. But it has to be hot.’ She turned to Mary. ‘I’m sorry I never asked your name.’
‘It’s Mary, miss.’
‘Mary, I will need you to keep the fire going and keep the tea warm.’
Just then Y/N’s eyes cracked open and she began to call out Lafayette’s name. First it was almost inaudible, but soon her whispers grew louder and more desperate. ‘Gilbert, Gilbert, Gilbert.’
‘She’s having hallucinations.’ Claire looked at the man in question, giving him a sympathetic look. ‘Talk to her from time to time. She may be unconscious, but she’ll need to hear a familiar voice.’
‘I doubt it will change anything.’
‘People with pneumonia usually call the names of people close to their hearts. If it is you who she’s calling for then you are most certainly very important to her.’
Gilbert looked down at the woman who had his heart in her hands since the moment he stepped inside her home. A tiny part of him knew he needed to stay and care for her; it knew he could not leave her, not when she needed him most. So he ignored the pang in his chest and took Y/N’s small hand in his and held it close to his chest.
At some point during the night, Lafayette felt Y/N squeeze his hand and his eyes snapped open. He looked at her waiting for a sign she was waking up. Her lids fluttered and her head turned to him.
‘Gilbert.’
‘I am here, mademoiselle.’
‘You left me, my love.’
His heart jumped at her words. ’I am not leaving, mademoiselle. You will be all right.’
She tried to smile but just as soon as she had woken up, she lost drifted back into a deep sleep.
A sparrow landed on the windowsill and soon after that the fever broke. Claire made another cup of tea and asked Gilbert to lift Y/N’s head so she could help her drink it. She was as gentle as possible, parting her lips to pout the liquid between them, then closing her mouth and holding her nose. It activates the swallowing reflex, she had explained to him.
A few hours later, around seven o’clock, Y/N finally woke up.
She opened her eyes, smiled and said, ‘Good morning.’
Claire told Jaime to get her father who was surely going to be happy to see that his daughter was going to be all right. Not long after the Scotsman had left the room, Albert ran in with dishevelled hair and clothes, but also bearing the largest smile on his face. ‘Mon ange! How are you feeling?’
‘All right, papa. I am sorry I caused such distress,’ Y/N said quietly and Albert burst into tears, enveloping his child in a tight hug. The young woman laughed but held her father close. She glanced up, above Albert’s shoulder, and saw Lafayette looking expectantly back at her. He really is here, she thought with glee.
Her father pulled back and Claire stepped up, smiling down at her patient. She introduced herself and Y/N expressed her gratitude for her aid. ‘If you remain in bed for the day, I believe tomorrow you will be even better. Mary will make sure you have peppermint tea every hour or so.’
‘Thank you, doctor.’
‘There is no need to thank me,’ the older woman replied, ‘try to rest and keep your strength.’
Albert offered to see them off and he, Claire and her husband left the room.
Y/N watched Gilbert who seemed to be ignoring her eyes and instead observing the embroidered shapes in her curtains. ‘Gilbert, I-‘
She was interrupted by her cousins barging in, squealing like mad, still in their nightgowns, hairs flying about them. They all ran to her and jumped on her bed, hugging her and kissing her cheeks. Y/N could not lie, she was happy to see them too, but she was anxious to speak with Lafayette who had apparently left the room.
Just as Claire had predicted, Y/N was much better the following day.
She walked around her room after waking up and when Mary came in, Y/N requested her clothes be brought up so she could join the others for breakfast.
As she descended the staircase with Mary, Y/N found that on the small table at the bottom of the stairs was a pot with blooming orchids. She did not know who had left the beautiful gift. She admired the soft petals and large leaves, then the ornate ceramic pot they were in.
‘They were left by Monsieur Lafayette last night.’
‘Is he still here?’
‘He should be having breakfast with the rest of your family.’
Y/N felt even stronger now and pulled her maid forward, eliciting a surprised yelp from her.
When the two entered the dining hall, Y/N thanked Mary for the helped and made her way towards her usual spot on her father’s left side. Thankfully, due to some urgent business, Jefferson had left which only brought Y/N great happiness.
‘Good morning,’ she said cheerfully.
‘Good morning,’ the all replied, except for Gilbert whose eyes following her with expectancy and even worry. Y/N thought of confronting him, but kept to herself and dug into the plate of omelette before her.
They were about to retreat to the parlour, when Y/N asked Gilbert to join her for a walk outside. Albert heard and was initially worried, but when his daughter assured him she was going to dress accordingly to the weather (and gave him a knowing look), he easily agreed.
The two were walking down the same path they had taken after the trip to New York. Now the ground was covered in snow, the branches were covered in a layer of frost and the only two colours in that wintery wilderness were Lafayette’s blue coat and Y/N’s emerald dress. She had looped an arm around his right one and was walking close to him.
‘You have been avoiding me, monsieur.’
Lafayette’s steps haltered for a second before he continued. ‘I thought you did not want me there in the first place.’
‘What an awful thought.’
‘It’s not my fault,’ he argued, ‘after what I heard you say to your maid that day, I thought you did not want me anymore.’
‘Say what to my maid?’
‘You said it was “absurd”.’
Y/N stopped completely and looked at him. ‘I was referring to Mr Jefferson’s letter.’
‘And what letter that might be?’
‘He wrote me a letter which was his… marriage proposal to me.’ She explained. ‘I believe that what you have heard is my displeasure with him, not with you.’
Lafayette was speechless.
‘Did you really think I would speak ill behind your back.’
‘I- I could not- I did not think-‘
‘Gilbert,’ she interrupted his ramblings, ‘I love you.’
‘You- you love me?’
‘Yes,’ she took a step towards him, ‘for quite some time now. I tried to push these feelings down, but… Gilbert, I could not lie to myself.’
Lafayette’s eyes revealed only the tempest inside his soul. He looked ecstatic. He too stopped forward and the two were merely inches apart.
‘So… may I ask my question, mademoiselle?’
‘You may, monsieur.’
He was about to kneel, but a voice shouted, ‘Y/N!’
She looked down the road and found her eldest brother Abraham walking hurriedly in their direction.
‘Abraham! What are you doing here?’
‘I received your letter. I am sorry it took so long to get here, I was in Canada and they had to re-post your letter.’ Abraham’s eyes moved to Lafayette who was most confused. ‘You! I have no idea where you came from, but if you make my sister uncomfortable-‘
‘Abraham!’ Y/N shrieked, pulling back her brother. ‘It’s all right!’
Abraham became more confused than the Frenchman in front of him. ‘I do not understand you.’
‘Go find papa,’ she grinned, ‘and tell him to go speak with Father James.’
The older Beauchamps sibling seemed hesitant. He looked between the two and nodded, finally catching his sister’s meaning, ‘Yes… will do.’
When the two were left alone, Gilbert looked at Y/N with a questioning gaze. ‘What was that about?’
‘It is a long story,’ she laughed. ‘You were about to…’
‘Oh, yes.’
Y/N stopped him. ‘Sorry, I just don’t want you to ruin your trousers.’
‘I don’t mind,’ he smiled and knelt in the snow. He held her hands in his and looked at her with adoration. ‘Mademoiselle Y/N Beauchamps, I am humbly asking you - with every piece of my being - to become my wife. I promise to cherish and respect you. I promise to love you with all my heart and soul. I promise to be faithful to you and only you. Will you take me? Even though I am just a foreigner.’
Y/N felt like crying, ‘I am terribly fond of foreigners.’
‘Well?’
‘Yes,’ she exclaimed, ‘yes, dear god!’
Lafayette’s face broke into a large grin, he stood up and gathered her in his arms, colliding his lips with hers. Y/N’s tears of joy trickled down her cheeks and mixed with Lafayette’s. She held his face between her palms and wiped away the wetness. Then she pulled him in and placed a soft peck on his forehead, whispering, ‘I love you, Gilbert de Lafayette.’
‘I love you just as much, Y/N Beauchamps.’
Oh, what a truly magical moment this one was!

Mirror on a stand, from a toilette service, William Fowle, 1683, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Decorative Arts, Textiles and Sculpture
mirror with relief gold frame with foliage and putti; removable top section with fruit, putti and foliage During the Baroque era, a lady and her lady-in-waiting could spend hours at the dressing table with soaps, creams, perfumes, brushes, pins, etc. This manner of ceremonial grooming originated in the French court, where the word "toilette" developed from "toile," or cloth, which covered the table. As the ceremony grew more elaborate, so too did the dressing table service that housed these beauty secrets. Surviving correspondence from silversmith himself identifies the elements of this service have been identified as follows: a rectangular mirror; an oval basin; two 'comb boxes,' one featuring Venus and Adonis, one with the Death of Adonis; two powder boxes, one with Phaeton in his chariot, the other with Phaeton falling to Earth; a cylindrical patch box with Hercules on its cover; two 'sweet-water bottles' for perfume; a rectangular pin-cushion; two 'jessemy boxes,' for jasmine oil; and two brushes (later additions). The figural plaquettes depict scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This set once belonged in the collection of financier and art collector J. P. Morgan. Among the very few services of this type, quality, and completeness, one can be found in the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth in England, and one by the same maker is at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Size: 20 x 17 1/2 x 1 5/16 in. (50.8 x 44.45 x 3.33 cm) Medium: Silver, gilt, mirror glass, silk, horsehair, wood

History Behind the Story - Dash
In this week’s episode of ITV’s Victoria we said goodbye to Dash, Queen Victoria’s beloved King Charles Spaniel.
Read more about Victoria’s relationship with her favourite pet under the cut.
Tumblr media
“Dash from nature” sketched by Princess Victoria, 9th February 1834. (Royal Collection)
After dinner I played with little Dash at ball, he bounded on all fours to run after it, bringing it back at full gallop, and screamed to get it while I held it in my hand.
- Queen Victoria’s journal, 19th January 1833
Dear Dash is a darling dog. His ears are grown so long and so curly and he is such a beauty. He is so attached and so merry too.
- Queen Victoria’s journal, 5th April 1834
Queen Victoria loved animals, but none more so that her first pet dog - a tricolour Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Dash. He had originally been gifted to Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent, but he and the thirteen-year-old Princess Victoria quickly became inseparable.
Victoria and her ‘dear sweet little Dash’ walked together in Kensington Gardens and played together in the evenings. She dressed him up like one of her dolls (‘in a scarlet jacket & blue trousers’), and when she learned to paint in oils Victoria chose as her first subject ‘dear Dash in his uniform’.
She made sure he had his own presents for Christmas (‘a basin of bread and milk, three Indian-rubber balls, and two bits of gingerbread surrounded with branches of holly and candles’), and for her sixteenth birthday Victoria received from ‘Dashy’ an ‘ivory basket with barley-sugar and chocolate’. When Victoria went sailing on the Isle of Wight, Dash ‘instantly plunged into the sea & swam at least ten yards after the boat’, unable to be separated from his beloved mistress.

When Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, Dash moved with her to Buckingham Palace. ‘Dear Dashy’, she reported in her journal, was ‘quite happy’ with his new living arrangements. On her coronation day, Victoria rushed home after the grueling five-hour ceremony in order to give Dash his bath. He was soon sitting in on her meetings with her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne:
Dash, who I brought in with me, as soon as we sat down ran up to Lord Melbourne with the greatest friendliness and licked his hand, which quite surprised me, considering the great dislike Dashy has for strangers.
Queen Victoria was always mindful of what Dash thought of other people. He was evidently a good judge of character - he seemed to like Prince Albert as well. When Victoria first met her future husband in 1836 she recorded happily how Albert would to ‘play [with] and fondle Dash so funnily’.
Dash died on Christmas Eve 1840, a month after the birth of Victoria’s first child. It was in many ways the symbolic end to her childhood. She wrote in journal:
Albert told me that poor dear old "Dash", was dead, which grieved me so much. I was so fond of the poor little fellow, & he was so attached to me.
He was buried in the grounds of Windsor Castle beneath a specially-commissioned marble effigy. The poignant inscription on his tombstone (which was quoted almost verbatim by ITV’s Victoria) reads:
Here lies DASH
The favourite spaniel of Her Majesty Queen Victoria
In his 10th year
His attachment was without selfishness
His playfulness without malice
His fidelity without deceit
Reader if you would be beloved and die regretted
