People have worked for a century to make California’s Tulare Basin into a food grower’s paradise. That pastoral landscape now looks more like the Pacific Ocean in many areas.
Months of atmospheric river storms have pummeled the area and saturated the basin’s soil, which sits about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, not far from Fresno. The rains have led to floods that damaged towns and deluged farms and have begun to refill what was once a sprawling lake.
The floods have pitted neighboring property owners against one another and raised tensions over how to manage the flows, which have damaged hundreds of structures. And more water is on the way.
Experts say a monthslong, slow-burning crisis will play out next: A historic snowpack looms in the mountains above the basin — as it melts, it is likely to put downstream communities through months of torment. The flooding, which follows several years of extreme drought, showcases the weather whiplash typical of California, which vacillates between too wet and too dry. The influence of climate change can make the state’s extremes more intense.
“This is a slowly unfolding natural disaster,” said Jeffrey Mount, a senior fellow at the Water Policy Center of the Public Policy Institute of California. “There’s no way to handle it with the existing infrastructure.”
The re-forming Tulare Lake — which was drained for farming a century ago — could remain on the landscape for years, disrupting growers in a region that produces a significant proportion of the nation’s supply of almonds, pistachios, milk and fruit. High-stakes decisions over where that water travels could resonate across the country’s grocery store shelves.
In the farming communities that dot the historic lake bed, accusations of sabotaged levees, frantic efforts to patch breached banks and feuds — common occurrences during flood fights in the area — have started already, said Matt Hurley, a former water manager for several water districts in the Tulare Basin.
n the nearby town of Allensworth last month, a dispute over a culvert caused anxiety and friction with the railroad that sends trains through town. Residents worked into the night to plug a culvert — a drain under Highway 43 — with plywood and sandbags in a desperate effort to keep floodwater out of town.
But later that night, workers with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad unblocked the pipe, which left some Allensworth residents fuming as water flowed closer.
The residents had used BNSF materials without permission, said Lena Kent, a railroad spokesperson. Damming the culvert threatened the highway — the only access point to Allensworth at the time — and the rail tracks that run parallel to it.
Stress levels could remain high for months.
“The problem this year is it’s just begun. We may have water running at or near our flood level — in all of our streams, through August or September,” Hurley said. “This impending monster — a 50-foot-plus deep snowpack that we haven’t seen in 75 years —  is sitting up there, and we just don’t know how fast it’s going to turn into water and come out of the mountains.”
The Tulare Basin is at the southern end of California’s San Joaquin Valley — and in essence, it’s a massive bowl. Before irrigators dug canals and rerouted water for farming in the late 1800s, Tulare Lake filled the bowl’s lower reaches. Shallow water stretched across the landscape, and the lake was the largest body of freshwater west of the Mississippi.
Several rivers — Kings, Tule, Kern and Kaweah — historically dead-ended at the lake and replenished its water levels every spring, but farmers have diverted and rerouted so much water that the lake bed is now usually dry. It’s among the most fertile farmland in the country.
Today, the irrigation system is designed to “use every single drop of water” that flows into the basin, Mount said.
In fact, through aggressive groundwater pumping, farmers collectively use more water than what would flow to the lake every year. Pumping has caused the land to sink dramatically — it has subsided in parts of the San Joaquin Valley by as much as 28 feet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey — deepening the bowl.
This season, far more water is flowing than can be used.
For about two weeks, farmers and emergency workers have been scrambling to plug levees and prevent the worst as the ground became saturated and rivers swelled after a seemingly endless series of atmospheric river storms battered California.
The flooding has breached dozens of levees, forced rescues, swamped construction sites at California’s high-speed rail project and seeped into several communities, including Allensworth, a historic community that in 1908 was the first settlement west of the Mississippi to be founded and governed by Black Americans.
“What you’re seeing now more than anything else is traditional flood problems,” Mount said. “All of that water is making its way into the bottom of the bowl and starting to fill the bowl.”
What could come next is more unusual — and worrisome.
The Sierra Nevada mountains, above the Tulare Basin, are storing two to three times as much water as snowpack as is normal. If the snow melts quickly, it will send floodwater churning toward the lake bottom.
Tulare Lake refilled in 1997 and 1983 during very wet seasons. The snowpack is larger this year.
“If we use 1983 as an example: They had more than 80,000 acres of land underwater. If it’s bigger than that, it could be as much as 100,000 acres underwater,” Mount said.
Tulare County ranked second in the country for agricultural market value, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. The region produces almonds, oranges, pistachios, wine grapes, milk and cheese.
“This has a ripple effect on the nation’s food supply,” Mount said.
California officials have geared up for a long fight against flooding. Nearly 700 people were assigned to help with the emergency response just in Tulare County, where floodwater has damaged more than 900 structures so far.
But sandbags and helicopter-delivered super sacks — bulk bags filled with rocks and other material — can do only so much.
“At some point, you know, we do realize that there’s too much water, there’s more water in the Sierra than these facilities can handle,” Karla Nemeth, the director of the California Department of Water Resources, said at a recent media briefing. The agency will do the best it could to help mitigate damages, Nemeth said.
Once water makes it to the historic lake bed, there will be few options to remove it, other than to wait for it to evaporate or to try to move it through canals and pump it away.
Pumps are expensive and inefficient over such sprawling terrain. Differing levels of subsidence along the lake bed have changed the geometry of canals, which could complicate efforts to move water away.
In 1983, remnants of Tulare Lake remained on the landscape for about two years, Mount said. Hurley estimated that if it floods again, the expense required to return the landscape to growing crops would be in the billions.
The flooding could also spell disaster for farmworkers and those who live in the rural communities that dot the Tulare Basin.
“This is a low-income community. People are not out here stocking up food. They go paycheck to paycheck in a lot of cases,” said Kayode Kadara, of Allensworth, a community organizer. “All we’ve heard so far is with this unprecedented snowfall, what we’ve seen so far is a baby flood.”
For now, the best everyone can hope for is a cool summer — with a steady, manageable melt — and as much cooperation as they can muster.

Old Draft: Cold as ice rn my pressure is so low it’s stinging throughout the body n my chest is paining my lips are quivering wid any like sensation my chest feels too tight & weird.
Click on the inspiration board for better quality, it looks best however in my camera roll cuz it gets rasterised once published on twitter n other social media apps
Tumblr media
I had created these moodboards long back. I was talking about them the other day, ppl will hate ‘em cuz they might find them childish idk but there’s a lot of significance attached to each one. I’m not in the state to elaborate further but you can read my article which is scheduled for 7th Mar it has all the details www.lilacnights.com/post/my-little-barista I have never felt so numb before my bp is too low and I’m feeling like this is my last day.
Speaking of the other bathroom moodboard, my parents had just given me a raw area even 10 yrs ago when I was in my teens my living conditions were very poor I was inexperienced and I had no help (even now I don’t) so I don’t want ppl to assume I’m very happy with all my stuff or I have my family’s support & that I’m just being “whiny” for no reason. They don’t care about me… they pretend in front of strangers. The bathroom was partially tiled (I’m not in the state to write my pressure is severely low so is my heartrate n I’m very numb) it was partially tiled it was embarrassing, one cud even see the raw grouted masoned wall there, the tub had no skirting it was again just a drop in tub which they’d dumped inside (haphazardly) there was fungus growing on my shampoo and other Bath stuff, I can barely breathe rn I am not obliged to give any explanations there was no towel ring or even a wash basin stand I wud wash my hands in the outside bathroom I wud go all the way there now I’m bed ridden (luckily I renovated everything) I was made to cry when I called someone from urban clap to fix a stand there and what’s worse is that he fixed it in a slant manner it was so tilted that my clothes would get wet the WC was leaking so were all the attachments in the shower area but my mother kept challenging me and fighting as to why I had to renovate it (I used it that way for TEN LONG YEARS an entire decade) I was made to cry LIKE HELL even in my horrible health condition and I was abused a lot…
I had somehow renovated it in 2021, unfortunately now I’ll have to do it again because of some major fault on the plumber’s part + other irrémédiable issues. I was also surprised to learn that our own Indian brand is keeping their classic range only for show here at the orientation centre and EXPORTING everything to UK & Dubai where they already have other alternatives such as Drummonds and Burlington, they have the entire set with the crutch and the hand shower THERE whereas in India everything has to be purchased separately and that too they have DISCONTINUED the crutch (HERE) without which its useless, our own crutch which is made in Rajasthan is exported there and they’ve kept this classic range only for show, everything is reserved for exports. Whatever looks ugly or has that local masculine design (every other local brand has the same products only the labels differ) is kept for Indians, we are beggars or what? All the classic, heritage stuff is sent there for what? To compete with other rival brands? They are so stingy and frugal when it comes to Indian customers that they kept only ONE piece/unit in the thermostatic model and divided that also into 2 halves, just like Greek God Zeus who had split soulmates out of intimidation, the top part is sent to Delhi and the back concealed component is kept for Mumbai! How stupid? It has been rendered useless for both the cities now. I somehow procured the crutch from an old stock (box packed) and I was continuously getting a rusted concealed back unit (thermostat which is super pricey) from everywhere cuz they were rotating the same damaged piece, I somehow got in touch with another dealer and ordered it from the main hub but it was the same one from that “pair” which had no front component cuz that was lying in Delhi. So I got the front also from an old stock it has scratches but at the back of the plate so they won’t be visible. It has those beveled edges typical hotelier style which I wanted since long but I can’t elaborate further like I said, I can explain everything detail probably in person… wish I had someone to talk to I’ve always been passionate about designing and interiors in fact everything, give me any topic. All I want to say is STOP smuggling what’s meant for us - Indians… all the way to UK & Dubai. You are an Indian brand, I love the quality and make I was so excited for this I’d planned it since Nov, I got it somewhere in the first week of Dec or so (last year) but we were still struggling for the top thermostat (front and back both) and hell no I’ll never put those ugly local designs in my bathroom. I have my soap jar and other apothecary stuff there I will never compromise. I’m a lot into designing… I was going to recommend everyone to pick both your brand as well as this particular range but then I realised people won’t be able to buy anything cuz you don’t keep all this stuff for Indians. We want the crutch which comes with the Victorian set, it’s an essential, and the entire range all the models (black and white both) I was so happy with the make and mechanism but I ended up being really disappointed.
I can’t write much, people even buy your freestanding bathtubs in India we have all started buying that I’ve seen the reviews, for such bathtubs we require bigger spouts too and this was much more ideal I even opened the autocad to check if the thermostatic one which I’d selected had a single outlet or not cuz I didn’t want anything with a diverter I have a bathtub I needed something right there for my hand to reach while sitting inside the tub hence we had to spend more and I didn’t want the 3 way one, this set has a different spout which is better than the ones we are commonly getting in abroad they all have a flat nose, whereas this has a round ribbed border which looks more expensive and a mesh filter plate inside, I needed one with a crutch cuz I don’t have more room there to fit both my soap tray as well as the shower bracket and I’ve optimised whatever space I had skilfully to keep all my apothecary jars and everything to have a full sized vanity, a free standing almost 1700 mm bathtub… (cuz again you don’t get smaller ones in India where bathrooms are matchbox sized) and all kinds of other things even wall art and frames.
So I needed one with a crutch provision not a bracket, secondly the long bend exposed pipe would’ve been difficult to put there as I have a highlighter tile which is running throughout the bathroom lastly it had a tap not a spout which is a bit unappealing moreover its not long enough to enter my tub completely so all the bubble bath solution would’ve ended up at the edges (cuz it has to be poured right under the faucet in running water) and last but not the least this was my main reason - we could’ve spent half the amount but we opted for the thermostat mainly because the 3 way one had a pull and twist knob on the tap to switch between Bath spout and hand shower and I wanted the one with a lever/dongle cuz of my previous experience (which was horrible) with Kohler no offence and with wet hands it’s anyway difficult but yeah Kohler’s spout was faulty. I wanted to make a budget bathroom so I got from there but I went wrong because I also realised that all my stuff is very common Kohler has only one design or product in each category and they are promoting the same 1-2 things everywhere which means I ended up with something really common, faulty and boring. Nothing vintage or whatever we want, just the typical semi modern 2003 stuff. I’m very happy with this one (I haven’t used it yet but I saw all the functioning with the lever and knobs) and this is exactly why I wanted it, I have put the entire thing together as a set & I matched the the bottom mixer with the thermostatic one on top for my overhead shower to have 2 separate modes, I’ll be able to use the overhead along with the hand shower BOTH AT THE SAME TIME secondly I was looking for a budget mixer again but that too was discontinued and we anyway would’ve had to upturn the outlet flang or whatever from behind cuz it was meant for filling pails and buckets, now after the thermostat my shower portion is gonna have a modern touch because of how they’ve designed it, when you are paying so much you are getting that typical shower console look with black insets, they aren’t illuminated because they are not digital (that is usually there in a 50k to 1 lakh unit) however you do get the console with that typical look and everything since its an automatic model and I even edited all my stuff including the renders to make them more realistic for my moodboard cuz I was not able to find real life images. Ab naak mat kataiyen cuz ppl might show interest and none of this is easily available for Indians… it’s the classic range which should be manufactured and supplied in full swing/bulk please do that why is India always lagging behind? There’s an entire cult following including me for this Victorian style everywhere in abroad but in India we are not getting it easily especially in Mumbai.

When an asphalt surface is neglected for an extended period of time, its elastic properties are lost and cracking occurs. If the cracks are ignored, they will eventually become too numerous and require asphalt replacement. One way to deal with deteriorating asphalt is to remove it and install new asphalt in its place. In order to repair many commercial parking lots, damaged asphalt parts are removed and, if necessary, replaced with brand-new asphalt.

Train Talk Tuesday
Tumblr media
Train Talk Tuesday: By popular demand, it's time to talk about freight rail in the United States! And more specifically, this post will be me mercilessly ripping into the current state of freight rail in the United States, because you bet your ass that we can't even get that right. Hell, my teaser for this week's post showed everything already:
Tumblr media
But that wouldn't make for an interesting post, now would it? So to start off, we first need to know...
Tumblr media
To answer that, we must travel back in time to the old old time of the 1830s. When railroads were first getting off their feet, their primary competition was from the tried and true canal system. To kickstart growth State and later on the Federal Government would give out massive loans land grants to companies to fuel the growth of railroads in the country.
Tumblr media
These land grants didn't just encompass the area where the rails were, they also included large amounts of area near the tracks in order to foster growth of new towns and settlements, which in turn pushed companies to continue building outward, with them selling off the extra land to businesses and settlers.
Now it's worth noting there was an extra slimier motive behind these land grants, and it was so governments wouldn't have to deal with the issue of evicting Native Americans from their lands, and instead private companies would handle that instead. This doesn't really relate to what I'm focusing on but it's still worth noting anyway.
Jumping forward over 100 years, most of the railroads in the country did relatively well for themselves up until the 1950s-1960s. By this point, it was becoming increasingly more obvious that there was a massive divide in the country with it's railroads, and this divide was due to a massive geological feature of the United States. Can you guess it? . . . . .
Tumblr media
BZZT! It's the Mississippi River! Sorry, got a little impatient. Anyway, yep, the Mississippi River had basically split the United States' rail transportation network in two, and both sides were polar opposites of each other. Railroads to the west of the river were still doing very well for themselves even going into the 1970s.
A good example of this is when the Burlington Northern opened a new coal hauling route into the Powder River Basin, which caused it to explode in revenue into a railroad that was hauling billions worth of revenue.
Tumblr media
Keen-eyed readers may notice that the Burlington Northern isn't a railroad that you hear about much anymore, and it may seem oddly familiar, almost as if you've heard of a similar railroad before somehow. Don't worry, we're going to get to that later. On the otherside of the great Mississippi, the railroads in the East were struggling going into the 1960s, with the biggest struggle being the merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the New York Central, and later on, the New Haven, into Penn Central (check last week's post for more info!). The merger was so bad that Penn Central created one of the largest bankruptcies in United States history. It became so bad that the Federal Government would have to step in and create Conrail to patch the gaping hole in the US's transportation network.
Tumblr media
The Federal Government would also pass the Staggers Rail Act in 1980, as a way to deregulate the industry and promote growth. In the end, the western railroads continued to do well for themselves, and while the east lost a lot of lines, Conrail did end up saving the east. However, something was happening amidst all of this. Railroad after railroad was vanishing, being victim to a larger railroad buying it out and acquiring all of it's tracks in the process. As a way to help make it easier to visualize, this is largely similar to how social media companies have a tendency to buy each other out, acquiring the other service's user base in the process. It's a way to reduce competition. Now remember what I said about the Burlington Northern being a railroad that you don't hear about much anymore? Well, the Burlington Northern was actually hidden under your nose this whole time, as starting from 1980, the Burlington Northern would continue to eat other smaller railroads near it, culminating when it merged with the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad to form the Burlington Northern Santa Fe...wait a second...
Burlington...Northern...Santa...Fe... B...N...S...F...
Tumblr media
Oh my god! How could we not have known this whole time?! *dun dun DUUUUUNNNNNNNNNN!* Ok, I'm done with that bit lol. Over time, the US Rail Network would be consolidated into 4 Class 1 Railroads, being BNSF, Union Pacific, CSX, and Norfolk Southern.
Tumblr media
As you can see on this map, a majority of the railroads in the United States are owned by these four companies, with BNSF and Union Pacific owning the majority of all tracks west of the Mississippi, while CSX and Norfolk Southern own the majority of the track east of the Mississippi. Now you may think "Oh, well it could be worse, you could just have a one company monopoly, vs the two company duopoly you have now" Believe me when I say that we have a duopoly system as well as a monopoly system.
Tumblr media
Let's say you lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, and you wanted to ship something via rail. Well if you don't like to work with Union Pacific, you're royally fucked, as Union Pacific's the only company that ships out of Salt Lake! So even if BNSF and Union Pacific have to compete on long-distance, short haul customers only have one railroad to choose. This has caused most shipping to divert to trucks on big highways instead of rail, despite rail being much more efficient overall vs. trucks due to no rolling resistance with trains and more efficient land use. "So the fact the United States has two duopolies for rail freight sucks, but it isn't worse than that, right?" Oh if only that were the case, then I could end the post here. But it only goes downhill from here. Now if there's anything that big companies love doing, it's cutting corners. Whether that be laying off staff, reducing quality of the product, you name it, some big company has tried something like this at least once. Railroads are no exception to this, and they achieve these cost-cutting measures using a number of means. First is the Big 4, as I will now be referring to our twin duopoly from now on, will actively refuse to upgrade and maintain any infrastructure that they own, examples being the rails, switches, bridges, tunnels, signals, etc. Instead they will do the polar opposite and choose to downgrade stuff instead, only to later bitch and complain that they're being overstressed while CONVENIENTLY ignoring how this was their own fucking fault. (I'm looking at you Union Pacific)
(Thanks Bloomberg for the busted embed) Pretty much the only time any of the Big 4 will upgrade/maintain anything is when something is causing a massive bottleneck and it can't be ignored anymore (Good example being when BNSF triple-tracked the Cajon Pass) or when something catastrophically fails (like a bridge collapsing) and they need to repair it anyway.
Tumblr media
"Wow, that's horrible! What's the cause of all this?" The answer is a nefarious practice called "Precision Scheduled Railroading", or more accurately """""Precision"""""""" """"""""Scheduled"""""""""" """"""""""""Railroading"""""""""""""". As you can see, I absolutely hate this term. But what the hell does PSR do? Introduced in 1993, it is an operating practice that prioritizes moving tons of freight from one point to another point, with much longer trains consisting of combined intermodal freight (shipping containers) and general freight (basically everything else), as a way to reduce crew numbers and how many times a car must be shuffled around in a yard. But there's a few problems with this approach. See, before PSR was a practice, freight railroads usually hauled shorter trains consisting of one singular good type, known as unit trains, and instead of hauling across long distances, the network was built around a central hub yard, with tracks reaching other cities from the hub, called the hub and spoke.
Tumblr media
On single-tracked lines, you would have a small outcropping of track on the main line called a siding. Since there wasn't any other way for trains to get around each other, what would happen is one train would park in the siding and allow the oncoming train to pass it before going on the line again. Now this was totally possible back then since the trains were shorter, so even though the line was just a single track, there wasn't too much fuss in getting trains to squeeze past each other. But when PSR became a thing, trains became longer than before, and this meant that these new trains couldn't squeeze past each other because the train in the siding couldn't fit fully in the siding, so part of the line would be blocked by the side train. Now this sounds like a massive logistical nightmare, and believe me it is, but it's only a nightmare to me and you. By contrast, CEOs and bean counters will look at this and say "Ah, it's a total success! Look, cars aren't spending as much time in big shunting yards! We don't have to pay as many people now! Fuck the fact that the line is clogged up now, we're rich!" As a side effect, this means one crew will have to sit with their train for hours on end for the line to clear, most likely until their shift ends and they need to be driven back to the yard or a nearby hotel. This is only going to continue putting strain on the supply chain, and it pushes more people to seek trucks for transportation instead. It's also worth noting if you ride Amtrak and your train keeps getting delayed by the freight trains, this is exactly why this is happening. It doesn't matter if Amtrak has any kind of priority, the trains physically can't get out of the goddamn way. To top off all this the Big 4 collectively have refused to move electrification because again, they aren't gonna spend a single penny unless they absolutely have to.
Tumblr media
It's super infuriating to see this happen meanwhile India has embraced electrification and is actively working to electrify more and more freight rail lines. And to compound this unfathomable love for diesel, the Big 4 aren't even buying new locomotives. The last order was in 2008, and they've been just rebuilding the same locomotives for years now. So on top of the fume coughers we have now, they're OLD fume coughers, so they cough more fumes than a modern diesel engine. Absolutely incredible. "So the Big 4 have the country by the strings in terms of rail freight, they're actively destroying their infrastructure, running shitty service, interfering with Amtrak services, and aren't moving to more eco friendly methods of operation. Can it get any worse than this?" Well... "No...don't tell me..." Yep, it gets even worse.
Tumblr media
Now I've mentioned that any big company loves cutting corners, but another thing any big company loves doing is boasting record profits then telling employees "Get fucked, you still won't get an increase in your paychecks lmao", and the Big 4 are no strangers to this. Railroad workers are treated like disposable donkeys at the Big 4, and that is no exaggeration. So what do I mean?
When working for one of the Big 4, you are typically on call for either 5-7 days a week, but if you haven't been working for 10+ years at the railroad, you will have absolutely ZERO clue what your hours are while you're on-call, until you get a call from your boss at any time telling you to get your ass to the yard and clock in. And when I say "at any time", I mean "at any time". This can be at 9:00 AM, 3:00 PM, 2:00 AM, it doesn't matter, you have to get your ass in gear and hightail it to the yard as soon as you get that call. "Hell no, that's absolutely horrible!" And you're right! These are absolutely unacceptable working conditions. And between these absolutely god awful working conditions, combined with the tons of layoffs by the Big 4, and understaffing due to mismanagement during the pandemic, workers have reached their breaking points with the shitty conditions.
Last September, the rail worker unions were authorizing strikes to put pressure on the Big 4. Their demands were better working conditions, more paid days off, and better medical leave. In other words, basic fucking benefits. The strike was later averted, but the unions didn't get nearly as much as they should have, and in December of last year, another strike was going to be authorized, but President Biden signed a bill blocking the strike, as had the strike gone through, it would have basically destroyed the economy in the process.
"Ok, so we have 4 big companies holding the country by puppet strings, with all 4 actively making rail transportation worse through infrastructure downgrades and shittier operating methods, which indirectly hurt passenger trains, and on top of that they treat their workers like garbage. Can we even save ourselves at this point?" Well, we actually can... I see two potential options at our disposal to fix our current system, but neither of them are going to be easy. First one is the easier of the two, and we exploit the Big 4's collective greed as a way to get stuff done. See, if they like money so much, why not give them some tax breaks to electrify and add more tracks to their lines? And while at it, proceed to iron grip them into running trains fast, and stop skimping on crews in the process. That's the first option. The second option is the harder of the two, and it's where you have to send the Big 4 running for the hills with a word that starts with the letter "N". . . . . . What?
I'm talking about Nationalization.
The Federal Government could buy out all the tracks and infrastructure from the Big 4 if it felt like it really. You don't even need to disband the Big 4, you can keep them around but have them run on contracted leases, and if they step out of line too many times, yank their lease away. And if this sounds familiar, it should, as this is exactly how the United States Interstate System works, where states and the Federal Government own the roads but any company can use it as long as they pay the toll. Again, Nationalization is a big topic that I can't do justice in these posts, so I recommend researching it yourself instead. Regardless, these two options are just but a few of the many options that could help tackle the Big 4 down and fix the United States' railroad network. The first part of the battle is informing people that these issues are real, because without people aware the Big 4 can continue to do the shady things they do without anyone batting an eye in the process. Quite a shame really. I'm hoping this post helped open your eyes as to how unbelievably busted our freight rail system is. In the meantime, spread the word, and push for the country to get back on track.

(Bonus meme for anyone who scrolled down this far, changed the meme on top to be more accurate, since five minutes is asking for too much from the Big 4)

Outdoor Recreation in Snohomish County
Checking in with visitor information receptionist Erika Morris at the Darrington information center, the Mountain Loop Highway is a great highway/byway to begin venturing outdoors. Its history rests in lumber harvesting, old mining camps and railroads in the eerie boonies. Like Monte Cristo and Gothic Basin Trails.
Also called the Mountain Loop, the Mountain Loop Highway follows the South Fork Stillaguamish and Sauk Rivers. For weekend getaway campgrounds nestled on the rivers, bring innertubes and kayaks for a calming float out west from the Cascade watershed. A substitute from the gym, a trek in the mountain loop is a breath of fresh air. Getting up close to the wilderness sets piece of mind and space to think.
Youth-on-age is a quarter mile paved interpretive trail to introduce the rich history of Snohomish County for young families. The Mountain Loop is the beginning stage to experience the outdoors. Fish Ladder and Old Robe Trail are short, relatively flat trails. A bite of fresh air and stunning evergreen brings about cravings to venture into natural beauty.
Familiar to Snohomish County residents is the 30-mile Centennial Trail. Near flat and paved, the trail is built on the old Burlington-Northern railroad line. Matt Tabor, President/CEO of Greater Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce, reveals the trail is a popular location for bikes and family walks. Its popular during the warm summer months and autumn as the weather begins to cool.
Officially starting at Nakashima Heritage Barn North Trailhead, the trail winds through downtown Arlington, Industrial Lake Stevens and ends in the city of Snohomish City Center. Matt comments the 6-foot wide natural surface is popular for bike rides available to all with ADA accessibility and picnic areas and rest stops.
Mastering the Centennial and level mountain loop trails can prepare the venturous spirit for more advanced hiking and overnight camping. Ascending in difficulty from Mt. Pilchuck and Mt. Dickerman, Perry Creek is the most difficult terrain in the Mountain Loop. The trail ascends 3950 feet in five and a quarter miles for a 10.5 mile round trip. The trail sits in the eaves of Snohomish County. Unrecognizable from its uninhabited surroundings inspires victory of Snohomish County terrain.
Take a change of pace from city life. Explore the outdoors. Set your own pace and enjoy the journey. A trip outdoors resets stress levels for a fresh start. Don’t forget to stop in a visitor or ranger station. Find out what trails meet your skill level and outdoor experience. Prepare the 10 outdoor essentials. Be sure to stay up-to-date on wilderness alerts for wildlife migration and natural hazards like wildfires and mudslides.
Time away from work and vacation expenses can add up to rough expenses. Stay close to home without the expense. Visit the Mountain Loop for a carefree weekend.
