Vaguess (Los Angeles, California) is the vehicle for the work of Vinny Earley. To be honest, I fully expected this band to be Australian rather than from Los Angeles. And this is really entirely my fault. I've come to associate Los Angeles with Uni Boys and Billy Tibbals - power pop/punk. Not that either band wouldn't like Vaguess, but this release sounds more post-punk than power pop. And as much as I've come to associate Los Angeles with power pop, this brand of angular post-punk makes me think of Australia (Ausmuteants).

Erste Theke Tontraeger (ETT) is releasing this LP - and this makes me think of a cross between Germ House and Wounded Lion (neither of which, oddly, are Australian).

The Bandcamp write-up brings to attention the title of the last song "Profit or Punk?". Great title, great song, and great attitude. The write up ends, "In summation: Save Vinny Earley, may his reign last a thousand years."

Vaguess – Thanks No Thanks LP (Under the Gun Records)

Once you know it, and maybe if you didn’t (it’s too late for that now), it's easy to hear this is a one-person project (but not a one-man band), seems to sit fairly nicely next to all those obscure records from decades past that seem to have so much and at the same time so little to do with each other and always make me really happy when I happen upon them, seems maybe a mix of lowkey synth punk, kitchen punk pop and backyard sun tea, Southwest indie rock of the 1980s, Cleveland art rock and NYC underground rock of the 1970s, the jangle and power-pop with hints of hillbilly and folk that enters at various levels depending on which cut you drop the needle on helping make it a continuation of Los Angeles tradition that goes back the 1960s with the wide variety offered from artists like the Byrds (without the Dylan influence) and maybe Skip Spence (if you ventured somewhere in the canyon between his solo work and work with Moby Grape), sounding like it was cooked up in a wooden fruit cellar, a screened-in porch or the plywood loft in a garage.  It sounds pretty wonderful.  – winch

Session 74: A Confession of Fear

An entry from a thick, leather journal tucked away in the shoulder bag of Wallace Bones:

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

I'm finding myself at a bit of a loss for where to start this time, but in the sense of there just being…so much. A lot has been happening. Although I suppose that in and of itself isn't much of a surprise. It's par for the course.

But at the core of it all, I'm unsure about this plane. We've been here before, but I'd like to say I dislike it even more this time. It's all a little overwhelming for me.

I've never been one for very big cities, but this place seems to bring out that fear in a very similar way to Vaguess. It's crowded and anonymous yet at the same time, we've been under almost constant scrutiny of others. Even our contact feels more like she's observing us rather than simply interacting as an acquaintance. 

It certainly doesn't help that the Warden managed to so thoroughly convince Kirin that they were to be trusted. Who's to say that whatever mind tricks they fell prone to won't strike again in the future? We didn't even know about this effect until it was too late to do anything on our own. Oriz made a deal with Khonsu and Deoch, and the thought of whatever might be requested of him as payment down the line worries me more than I can express in only a few words.

I've scarcely felt safe while we stay in this plane. And as much as I dislike saying it…even Absolus is starting to feel unsafe. I don't experience the same amount of trust for them as I once did. Something isn't right about them, and this place is letting it show. Perhaps the details aren't lining up as well at this angle.

How ironic is it that I'm beginning to trust the Eel more than the Eagle?

I knew something had felt wrong when I…when I fell. I was scared though, and I wanted familiarity, so I stayed with them. I still am scared, to be quite honest. Is that a bad thing for me to admit, given the job we do? I think some amount of fear is healthy, but it drags on and on, and it's exhausting. Pardon the unintentional play on words, but I can feel the tiredness in my bones. 

I want those I love to be safe with me, but all of this uncertainty in everything we do puts that in such immense jeopardy. 

Is safety even possible anymore?

We have to encounter the fae again–willingly, this time. I would do everything in my power not to return to that place again, but as usual, we have very little choice. It has to be done, and whatever suffering we experience will simply happen.

I'm going to warn the others and hope that they listen and take my advice to heart. I'm not sure I want to talk about what I saw with them though, as much as it would probably help to understand what we'll be walking into. I don't think I've had a chance to process it enough yet. 

This will remain a secret between you and I, but when it's quiet...I think I can still hear the clock in that room.

Not sure how I missed out on hearing Lip Readers before today. The band is made up of members from Ovens, Tony Molina and New Faultlines. They were part of the vibrant (and still vibrant) Oakland scene.

The music on "Clean Kitchens EP" is an excellent representation of the aforementioned bands.

This was released in 2020 on Los Angeles based label Refry Records. Be sure to check out Vaguess - great garage rock in the vein of Gentleman Jesse or The Black Lips.

Ysaac has been living with Ivar in Hoelbrak for about more than a year now (or more depending on AU and vaguess of timeline) - It is his first real home since forever and he learned a lot about Norn culture!

During this, he raised and took care of a lots of stray rabbits hopping around their cabin and often helped the Snowhare shamans. He always has been loyal, withstanding the wilderness (as expert scout/tracker for years now) and being cute as a bunny agjhkd

After so much work and compassionate help, and upon the decision to marry Ivar, he is being honored to partake in the jackalope ritual and hare challenge to prove worthy of the bunny blessing!

I did the other day with a band I had forgotten about and girl I am LOVING their new album! Good shit

im not sure i have! ive steadily enjoyed the same few artists since like 2018 and up until then i didnt really have a favorite artist i dont think? ik u said liked not favorite but liked is so so so vague

under that vaguess tho i still think my answer is the same. like before i had my steady few i mostly just liked stuff popular on here in 2015 (You Know.) and stuff on the radio, and i dont rly ever go back to those people for their new stuff so :^)
