Alex Keller was a very open man, or at least that's how he came off.

He was friendly, wide-eyed, the kind of guy you feel like you've known all your life. He seemed to naturally click with everyone he spoke with, including the 141.

Simon Riley was the opposite of him, he was a skeptic. Closed off, suspicious of those he didn't know. This was no different with Alex than anyone else, but there was something about the bright eyed American that made Simon's brain tick.

He didn't know exactly why he felt more on edge around Alex than other new people he met, and he wouldn't understand why until he overheard a conversation between Alex and Gaz.

"Alex man, can you keep a secret?"

Alex laughed. "Do you even know when my birthday is?"

Gaz laughed along, but something seemed to click with Simon.

He knew.. Nothing about Alex.

His middle name, his birthday, where he grew up, his favorite colour, nothing.

That's why he had been so off-put by him, the man was a complete mystery. A mystery that nobody even considered solving because Alex just naturally came off as an open book.

He didn't know what to think from then on, he tried to dig up what he could on Alex but knew he wouldn't find much without the assistance of Laswell.

He spent weeks avoiding the American, narrowing his eyes at him when he was in his vicinity, completely unaware that the two of them shared such similarities.

Two enigmas, one much more obvious than the other.

It wasn't until some random Wednesday night, nobody awake but the stars. Simon stumbled upon Alex just outside the bases front door, a lit cigarette nursed between his fingers.

He wanted to ignore him, go back to bed, but he found himself stepping outside with the other.

Alex acknowledged him with a smile and a nod, but didn't speak. Simon stared at him, not bothering to hide the fact that he was searching for answers in the other man's warm gaze.

There was a thick silence between them, it wasn't uncomfortable but, it was far from comfortable at the same time.

Alex broke it first.

"I take you're not a fan of me?"

He chuckled dryly, humorlessly. An observation Simon couldn't say he expected. His eyes didn't leave the American, watching closely as he took a drag off the cigarette. He didn't know Alex smoked but, then again, what did he know about Alex?

That's the entire reason he was here.

"Don't trust what I don't know."

Simon finally replied, though by now it was more of a statement on its own than an actual response to his comment.

Alex shrugged, he didn't seem at all bothered by Simon's reply. Silence spread between them once more, Simon didn't like Alex's lack of response.

"You're ex-CIA, that's all anyone knows about you. Nobody knows anything about you, but they trust you."

Simon continued, he wanted answers, he wanted a reason to trust the other man. Alex was quiet, tapping the ash from his cigarette before he replied.

"What was that saying? Those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones?"

In any other moment, Simon would have been offended by the comparison. But, Alex was right.

They were, almost scarily similar in every aspect but their personalities.

Silence again. It was more welcome this time around. Simon always appreciated the quiet when he needed to think.

The silence didn't last too long this time, Alex spoke up again.

"Humor me, do you ever forget that you're a person and not just a soldier?"

That question alone haunted him for days, Simon now felt uncomfortably aware of Alex.

The way the americans grin always seemed to falter ever so slightly when he held it, how his gaze would fog over at the scent of smoke or when it got too quiet, how his prosthetic always seemed to be moving in some way or another.

He was aware now, aware of the similarities they shared.

Aware of how, just like him, Alex was a soldier before he was a man.

The unusual but no less hard-hitting 10½! (1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9)

So as it turns out, I did so many Blank Slate/Have you lost your mind? doodles that I ComPletely broke the last sketchdump lol, so it gets it’s own! Who could’ve figured that making basically a full comic of Chapters 2 and 3 would’ve made just a few too many sketches lol

Because of that, I’d strongly recommend reading what I've posted of Have you lost your mind? so far before this! Spoilers and author’s notes/behind the scenes warnings and all that haha

Concept sketch for Scriabin - I always love having visual signifiers to denote timeline/AU/etc. differences so you can tell at a glance where you are :) His silhouette gets to be correct! The details, well, sorry we forgot those ♪

And concepts for Edgar! I've drawn him in different glasses before so it was a bit of an excuse, using these new/old glasses to do so again haha

But in the end I went for a reference! Remember when I drew Edgar's glasses tiny?

And I mean, if he hadn't worn them in a while, maybe they're just a bit small on him! Lol

Poor memory-less Edgar's musings, it's not just sad to be forgotten, it's sad to forget :(

Early concept of Scriabin freaking out by himself in the bedroom. I'm glad I got to keep it :D

Always gotta draw 'em reacting to something just out of frame

Poor Scriabin, he wants to be close despite knowing Edgar doesn't remember him. He has to face this whole Being Human thing completely alone! Edgar just doesn't understand!

He doesn't know how good he's got it haha, if I was really mean I'd have let him keep his glasses instead. There's a bunch of fun themes either way, but stealing from Edgar while hiding in his own hair is as good as any hehe <3

Blank-faced Edgar, I ended up with a lot of these, unsurprisingly. Doesn't help that he's cute haha

As usual, starting from the middle - it's just easier to get ideas flowing around a core! Also that note pointing at Edgar of "Put Todd to bed" was all the everything of the prep work I did for writing that little section, but the rest Absolutely Needed storyboarding lol

He might come to resent you if you manhandle so much right after meeting for the "first" time

Scriabin actually touches him in the original draft, but after I thought about it, it'd probably take a bit to cross the touch barrier comfortably again! Scriabin's still weird about Edgar but Edgar is wary, it's an interesting dynamic

I won't show off every panel, but panels like these where I think they turned out especially cute Have to be included haha <3 I dunno what it is but Scriabin pouting always turns out adorable ♥

Floof harder! Edgar's innocent expressions ahh <3

Starting to lay the groundwork, but still a bit nervously! It is quite fun how they skirt each other, not quite sure what the other knows - how many lies can Scriabin get away with before he gets caught!

Scriabin using some informed guesswork in conjunction with what he definitely knows, he is rather intelligent :) You can also see Edgar's unfocused eyes well in this one, I tried to draw them fuzzy behind those glasses hehe

These are all lined up like this on the page :D Really happy with his hand expressions here, and his face haha

This was one of my favourite lines - he keeps making excuses for Nny! Edgar no! - I fully admit that it's also partially influenced by how cute Edgar turned out haha, the poor thing - but he's so wonderfully fluffy!

I love this line as well, Scriabin utterly convinced that all his hard work must have gotten through to Edgar somewhere in there, he said it often enough, he must have listened to him at least once-!

And then Edgar completely cuts him off and redirects him haha, they’re both hopeless <3

So mad at himself and Edgar, comedy = pain + time, but this is still fresh! Give yourself some time!

That last line in particular is so insidious because he did that, Scriabin was the one who put him in that situation, and now he’s trying to turn it back around on him! He's the worst ♪

Guilty Edgar <3 Still pressing on (changing the subject so he doesn't have to linger on the feeling hehe), he does have his own questions

These kinds of exchanges were especially fun to look back on from their individual perspectives since I only drew it once, starting with Edgar. How honest can Scriabin really be? He can't explain everything and not be kicked out for being a potential danger to Todd or Edgar! He's gotta play his cards Just So

Edgar is also quite intelligent! Catching Scriabin out in a lie, even when he's trying so hard to skirt the truth!

Scriabin so mad about being called out, gotta rub it in just a little bit that he's Totally Right lol, what a brat <3

Scriabin is legally and morally and emotionally and spiritually obligated to mess with Edgar sexually in literally every iteration of his existence, it is a core tenant of his being and also he really really wants to (lol) ♪ Drawing Edgar all blushed up is just a bonus, who does this stranger think he is! What has he forgotten! He's not some easy man! Haha, if you only (still) knew, Edgar

Whatever he was going to say would just hurt Scriabin's feelings, better to just cut him off before another reminder gets laid out

Probably my least favourite dialogue that I had to change was making "?" into something that flowed better in just-text, it's not the same! Lots of little notes about word choice actually haha. Love them reaching for each other even like this <3

Edgar has all these feelings to contend with! My favourite shot is easily the last one, Scriabin's relaxed mouth while Edgar's heart is beating out of his veins right into his ear ♥

Existence is exhausting

Even without knowing him, he's just a cautious guy :) And he wants to be gentle with him! He doesn't realize what he's doing, what his actions would mean to Scriabin if he could see them, and he does them all the same 💕

Zarla mentioned Scriabin curling up into a ball in the blankets and I thought it was a cute visual haha ♪ Haven't had a use for it yet but never say never hehe

I wanted to go for some high perspective shots to drive home the uncanny feeling of being really truly alone for the first time ever. That, and he's dramatic anyhow haha

His posing was very important to me! Since Edgar knocks on the door while he's still leaned against it, the contact points would Feel a specific way

Scriabin got a lot of「bracket notes」for his section, usually as digs lol, where does Scriabin get off saying that Edgar has no tact haha

More blank-faced Edgar! These were actually drawn separately - could be chalked up to how each of them remember the event! Edgar sees himself as more put-together and Scriabin as more foolish haha ♪

That horrible sinking feeling

I pick on him a lot but this really would be incredibly scary and sad! He's alone, expelled, and the only person who Knows him now doesn't even recognize him! This was probably the one scene I wanted to be just a bit longer, really feel the weight, hmm

But he's also quite resilient haha, he has to be <3 He has enough tenacity, thank goodness haha

One of those examples of panels basically repeating lol, I can only fit so much text per pose! Plus it's fun to see the little body language differences :)

Another bracket note lol, Scriabin has to be the best at everything!

And another, have I mentioned that Kaggie is my favourite of the two? ✨ I'd still like to give both K and D a more sizeable reference sometime! Scriabin continues to be the cutest when he pouts, agh <3

Touchy touchy touch ♥

I do love the phrase "feeling himself" right after the last panel lol - it can be both literal and metaphorical! And that's what you get for not cleaning up after yourself! I swear that lightswitch panel confused me so many times on reviewing notes lol

He's not even careful pfft. Then again if he was, he wouldn't have a mess to grumble about in the first place!

A familiar face while Scriabin's already feeling small on his lonesome, ~it's symbolic~

Ough, it hurts to think that Edgar might actually be able to watch Zeitgeist, not knowing the deeper implications. The thought of him inviting Scriabin to see it! 💔

The most important question, and he hasn't come to a conclusion yet :) I wonder what his answer will be once he stops hiding from it!

Hhhh this has been a really fun AU to write for, I'm glad that I finally put it to words since it had been rolling around in my head since early 2021 - there are so many fun and insidious things to explore! Especially on Scriabin's side, though I still think it's the most fun to be stuck behind Edgar's eyes, an aware audience knowing what Scriabin is up to while Edgar doesn't hehe ♪ Hopefully I'll have some time to return to it after a bit! :D

if your vitriol toward a character clouds your judgement so much that you're unable to:

even talk about them with like... base-level empathy (these characters are based on real life people after all. they're our older-queers! struggling to fight their generational traumas),

How long did you practice getting your artstyle? I just would like to know so I can try experiencing different methods of drawing.

Honestly I didn't practice as much as analyzing every good art I stumble upon. Practice is a surefire way to develop your art style for sure, but I also noticed myself improving even if I draw like. Three times a year.

Pretty simple, it goes like this; I see an eye catching art, and then I try to think how they did it. What parts made it look 'good' to me? Sometimes I noticed the art was overlayed with texture, I noticed the lineart is colored with something saturated when it hits a light source, I noticed they added gradient to the base color, I noticed it's easier to render by multiplying the whole base color with something desaturated and then overlaying it with desired light source color, and so on, I just noticed a lot of things. It's just a habit to stop and stare when I see something cool now.

(Sometimes the art looks so good I got too intimidated to even think of analyzing it, but I try anyway.)

This is also true for drawing fanarts by the way! Do you know a lot of times Sans' socket's bottom ridge (that protruding thing near his nose hole) points in the general direction of the end of his mouth? This basis is pretty useful when you want to draw his skull from different angles.

My art style is just an amalgamation of other art styles, basically! I didn't set a goal in getting my art style or anything, it just sorta happens.

#pro tip if you understood how overlay and multiply layer type works you'd be able to render right about everything #oh ALSO doing the color balance or color correction to your finished art works wonders #and focus on the general shapes of your art. the silhouette. work on your drawing as a whole instead of seperate parts.#you'll notice most good art out there has a very defined silhouette #fuck it we must ball -- utilize every tool your art program gives you. learn it slowly if you must. you WILL found something that fits you.#if ur not able to tell i am FROTHING rn. I don't think im the best at this or anything but I have a lot of techniques to share ragghhhh

MHA 395 SPOILERS

I dont think toga is actually dead. Maybe I'm being delusional or just grasping at straws but it doesn't feel like she's going to die.

Toga has always been a character who's afraid of death and I understand that in 395 she is choosing to give up her blood to ochako because she cant allow this world to exist without her. She loves her. But ochako is trying so hard to fight her, she is pleading with toga. She is desperate. To put all this work for ochako to save toga and then just kill her off just doesn't seem to me like the direction its going in.

Not to mention they were floating in the air and the heros saw them. At least one of them has to head over to see if they're okay. If this is the case I think it's going to be hawks. I think it'll kinda be a mini redemption arc for killing twice because he does seem remorseful for it.

Not to mention the parallels to bakugou's death. Both giving up their lives to somebody they love and the significance of something related to allmight. Those two factors make me believe that she is going to come back because those were two very important factors in bakugou's death. And we know he is coming back.

If mha 396 still focuses on them I think it's going to go more into ochako's feelings and why she wanted to save toga so badly because I feel like there's more to that.

If toga really is dead then its tragic and a beautiful end for her character but again I dont think that's the case. Maybe I'm just biased because I'm a togachako shipper and want them to be happy. But I really do think she isnt dead.

Related to the poll, do u have any tips on how to come up with sylladexes? I dig them in theory but I have no idea how to come up with ideas for them

i honestly have no idea other ppl would probably be better to take the stage here! I haven't made up any sylladexes myself so if someone has and sees this post, feel free to take the stage and make additions! Personally, I guess I'd pick a theme related to the character and spin something goofy and impractical out of that? A sylladex can also be used to characterize them as either in tune with their identity and practical life (Gamzee's totally random modus works for him due to his faith in miracles, and Sollux and Dirks also work fine them as well. to my knowledge rose doesn't have an issue with hers.) where as John, Dave and Karkat all struggle eternally with theirs. Dave expresses confidence in his cool modus, but he just wants to put things in and take them out and he constantly struggles with his lacking math skills. John struggles with elaborate, jesterly jokes despite being a prankster himself, and his sylladex is part of that comedy. Karkat's sylladex is difficult and unmoving, constantly spawning giant metal safes when he sucks at coding and encryption, but he's too stubborn to change it. It's just another thing to frustrate him that he attempts to force to make it work.

#I brought up the question because I don't think I'm going to utilize them in something im working on #because I'm sharing the comic with people who don't know homestuck. Specifically #Karkat's encryption modus is fucking hysterical but CRAZY impractical to the point of halting a plot entirely. However #the idea of safes just being... LAUNCHED OUT ALL THE TIME is so damn funny.#The other reason i brought up the question is because the hemocaste swaps descriptions of the sylladexes was brilliant to me! all fun ideas #that fit the characters a lot

the magic snack protected his ass like a mario power-up. even though he was still caught in the explosion, he was just reverted to normal size.

when puss, kitty, and perrito left the scene, he came to and climbed out of the crater like:

when he returns to the factory (and has a fight with goldie & the bears in the process) he rebuilds his magic collection and starts searching for other ways to get his wish

oh, and he swears revenge against puss, kitty, perrito, and the crime bear family who escaped when he last fought them

which gilmore girls characters would own guns?

lorelai: has a tiny pink camo pistol she has never bought ammo for — she thinks if she just pulls it out during a confrontation, it will scare off her attacker. really, she thinks of it as more of a cute accessory she can keep in her purse instead of a weapon

rory: is pro-gun control so she doesn’t own any firearms. however, she does have a baby blue pepper spray instead (it’s expired)

luke: has a couple firearms he all keeps very responsibly in a safe hidden in his closet. one he bought for self defense purposes, but the others were passed down from his father and he doesn’t have the heart to sell them

christopher: used to own one or two pistols, but he got rid of them when gigi was born

emily: has one antique rifle kept in her panic room that she thinks will defend her in the case of a burglar (it won’t)

richard: has a gun safe in his office containing a pistol and a sophisticated looking rifle, but he hasn’t told emily that they’re there

trix: believes that it’s a man’s job to handle the self defense of the home. however, she still keeps the old firearms that her late husband owned in case of “dire emergencies”

dean: goes hunting with his family regularly and therefore owns several firearms and knows how to use them

jess: has illegal firearms, one of which is a fully automatic that he takes out into the woods occasionally to shoot with his buddies

logan: has several high-tech, custom built handguns and rifles that he and his friends show off to each other. rory vehemently disapproves

lane: prefers knives, or perhaps a baton

mrs kim: she once shot an american soldier during the korean war, traumatizing her and being the inciting event for her conversion to seventh day adventism

paris: expert at self defense. she has a tricked out glock with tons of attachments, as well as excelling in several forms of hand to hand combat

sookie: was there when lorelai bought her pistol, so she also has a matching one. hers is lime green camo and it hasn’t seen the light of day for about five years

jackson: afraid of guns, but owns one gun (that he never touches) to keep up appearances of being tough and masculine

michel: european (doesn’t like guns)

taylor: acts scandalized by the idea of townspeople owning guns and tries to pass a motion banning them from the town, but really he has a large collection of historical muskets and rifles in his home for which he made “special exceptions”

kirk: bought a handgun once, but he shot himself in the foot and the town petitioned at a town meeting to confiscate it as a matter of public safety (it passed unanimously, with even kirk voting to confiscate)

liz: not really interested in firearms. she knows she’s too clumsy to use them — instead, she owns several swords, none of which are really practical

tj: bought a handgun once he and liz bought their house, but he still doesn’t know how to use it

patty: when asked, she says dramatically that she once “shot a man in reno.” she will not elaborate
