Just to point out that while George Santos was finally expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives after being charged with 23 felony crimes, committing astounding levels of fraud, and fabricating absolutely stupid amounts of his background, it still required the heavy-lifting of Democratic members to close the deal, and a majority of Republicans voted to allow him to remain.

Why is Kevin McCarthy the first House Speaker to be removed from office in the entire history of the United States? Surely there have been conflicts within parties that have been just as intense, in 234 years. Is it just that in all previous cases, the Speaker resigned before he was voted out?
You've got it in one. Something similar happened at the turn of the 20th century with a political dispute between Progresssives and the machine politician Joe Cannon, but (similar to how Nixon decided to resign before he could be formally impeached and convicted) Speaker Joe Cannon ultimately decided to jump rather than be pushed.
For whatever reason, whether it was a bad legislative count or self-delusion or a willingness to endure political humiliation, Kevin McCarthy decided to let the procedures work themselves out fully rather than resign ahead of time.
