In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Apricot season is underway and we’ve harvested about 15 pounds which my husband/orchard tender says is a small portion of the crop. Last year the three trees produced 120 pounds, though one less productive tree died and was removed. We replaced it with a similar early variety in the “threesome” planting as seen in Backyard Orchard Culture. We’ll see what the season holds. I foresee an apricot cobbler this week and more apricot sauce.
And once again the happy garden coincidence of rhubarb and Dorsett Golden apples. I made a sauce with the above and after cooling added a few tablespoons of orange juice and a pinch of orange zest. The three fruits coalesce for a balanced, flavorful sauce.
Berries bring delight every day. The blueberries live up to their name, Bountiful.
When the cauliflower finished, I planted tricolor carrots in February. Winter rains and longer days were to good effect.
Easter Egg II radishes grew much better in the late winter and spring succession plantings. They were more successful than the fall planting. Perhaps, the soil dries with inattention in October and November as we wait for rains.
The last of the small lettuces made their way to the fridge. Thankfully this variety stores well so we’ll have salads for a few weeks. I need to tuck some lettuce starts around the newly planted tomatoes.
A simple lunch with garden lettuce, carrots, radishes and Greek yogurt with apricot sauce.
The spinach leaves enlarge but are still tender and we steam them several nights a week for dinner. Bunnies get a suitable bag of mixed greens—critter worthy arugula, kale, lettuce and spinach.
After a time of working in the. perennial gardens I grabbed what I refer to as incidental bouquets. Here Ambridge roses (David Austin) and pincushion flowers (scabiosa).
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I transition to summer in the garden. Then head to Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Happy Acres Blog and see what garden bloggers around the world harvested last week.

sometimes dinner is [squints at the clock] REALLY late. And that's okay.
I threw some freshly-stabbed big baking potatoes on a baking sheet, rubbed em in oil and herbs and salt, then chopped up a bunch of other veggies to roast before they went bad. Chunks of red onion, tricolor bell peppers, carrots, cherry tomatoes, slivers of garlic. I ran out of space or I would have thrown in broccoli :<
Anyways it's in the oven, roasting and baking and it smells sooooo delicious oh my godddd.
Im gonna give it a good hour at 450° before I make some tuna helper and fried green beans to go with it. Might broil it a minute or two right at the end. Fingers crossed it all comes out as scrumptious as it smells and I don't burn anything 😩

Grilled Ribeye: Topped with a horseradish butter sauce over mashed potatoes and roasted tricolor carrots.
I used an ancho chile coffee rub before reverse searing in a cast iron skillet. The oven was set to 275 and I pulled it out when the internal temperature reached 90. I seared it over high heat adding butter and garlic to the skillet and spooning that over the top until internal temperature reached 135. I let it rest and then topped with a horseradish butter.
The carrots were roasted in a 425 degree oven with some olive oil, salt, pepper, brown sugar for about 20 minutes, until fork tender.

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Last week we harvested most of the second crop of ‘Dorsett Golden’ apples from the espaliered tree. It was a smaller harvest than the first which comes in late June and the sizes were variable. I see a few apple desserts ahead so I’ll be pulling out my apple recipes file this week.
Thankfully, the abundant strawberry guava crop has come to an end. My husband shook the tree and then gathered the remainder. I made one last batch of guava puree—no sugar needed. It goes to the freezer possibly for jam or additions to my applesauce.
I attempted guava paste with a new recipe but had to leave for a meeting before it cooked down sufficiently. It resembles apple butter. I used some of it for a guava barbecue sauce which was delicious.
Continuiing the red theme, four small tomatoes that were perfectly green were salvaged when we removed the ‘Early Girl’ plant a month ago. They did ripen and would not “take best of season” but were welcome additions to October salads. I believe the ‘Baby Belle’ peppers will continue as long as I let them.
This week I planted carrots and shallots. Pictured are Renee’s Garden ‘Tricolor’ mix. I also planted an equal amount of pelletized ‘Bolero’ from Territorial Seed Co.
When the asters begin it feels like fall in my garden.
See the Results of My USDA: Soil Your Undies Challenge and marvel at what soil microbes can do. Then head over to see what other garden bloggers around the world harvested last week at Harvest Monday hosted by Dave at Happy Acres blog.

Little reminder to go back to the path to upper Gormott now it's high tide, because you can swim over and get a gold chest with 3 core crystals!
Tumblr media
Anyways, I've collected quite a few cores doing some questing, so let's open 'em! Still saving my rare for later, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Rex, this is a pretty decent early Blade. If it was rarer and had more battle skills, that'd be better, but Attack Aura is not something to snuff at!
Tumblr media
WAIT A MINUTE I KNOW THAT SILHOUETTE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINCH MY DARLING FINCH if you didn't know what my icon was, well, now you know
Anyways, with a rare Blade, I figure I might as well go over her stats. This information is taken from the datamine as well as speedrunner Enel's Blade guides with his general advice on how to use the Blades:
Type: Tank
Weapon class: Shield Hammer
Obtained: Gotcha
Favorite pouch items: Veggies, Cosmetics, Stuffed Meaty Carrot (veggie from Torigoth, Gormott), Sparkly Snow Perfume (cosmetic from Torigoth, Gormot)
Element: Wind
Level 1 Special: Blast of Fresh Air - Increases Affinity by 60-100 when using a Special. Ether damage, circular AOE, 1 hit, base damage ratio is 315 and goes up to 504 at S+ rank and max affinity. (actually has decent damage and is relatively fast, but the single hit…)
Level 2 Special: Whoopsie Crazy - Increases aggro drawn from Specials by 60%-100%. Physical damage, single target, 3 hit, has a 25% crit mod, base damage ratio is 440 and goes up to 638 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Ah yes, crits for her super low rate. This is slow, but it might help you get a bit of aggro even though doing more damage would too.)
Level 3 Special: Wake-Up Whirl - Increases damage dealt to toppled enemies by 100%-150%. Physical damage, circular AOE, 1 hit, base damage ratio is 575 and goes up to 782 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Again, decent damage and considering she has a topple art on Morag, she can actually take advantage of the effect. Just a shame it’s only 1 hit.)
Level 4 Special: Perfect Storm - No effect. Ether damage, single target, 4 hit (+2), has a 20% crit mod, base damage ratio is 500 +500 from Driver. (Okay, just her level 3 on toppled enemies would be better.)
Ability 1: Did I Do That? - 10%-20% chance to not deplete recharge after a Driver Art or Special. (Art recharge is better, although this technically could mean she could spam level 4 specials, although...it’s a ⅕ chance when maxed out. It’s not gonna trigger much.)
Ability 2: Doesn’t Ring a Bell - 30%-50% chance to reset recharge for an enemy Art when a Special connects. (Typically enemies have short cooldowns so this is bad for the same reason Kora’s Stop Thinking is bad.)
Ability 3: Surprise! - Increases damage dealt by a surprise attack by 100%-200%. (Shield hammers do little damage, it’s not going to be useful in bosses or challenge mode, doesn’t do anything for the battle itself...yikes.)
Mods: Agility Mod. 15%
God I love her so much, but sadly she's...not a very good Blade. It's unfortunately a common theme among the shield hammer class and Rex is not a great Driver for her, Morag being the best option. BUT MY GIRL
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...You know when people talk about designs from this game, I'm surprised everyone always brings up Dahlia and says nothing about Nim. Like the most she gets is people saying "she's the furry bait" but I reject that.
Anyways, her stats:
Type: Healer
Weapon class: Knuckle Claws
Obtained: Gotcha
Favorite pouch items: Seafood, instruments, Tricolor Bowl (staple food from Pyra’s cooking, requires An Ardainian Recipe to be purchased from the Mor Ardain informant), Don’t Feed the Armu (game from Theosoir, Tantal)
Element: Earth
Level 1 Special: Fierce Healer - When landing a hit, restores 30%-50% of damage dealt to the whole party. Ether damage, large circular AOE, 1 hit, base damage ratio is 285 and goes up to 456 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Low damage and the low hit ratio don’t make it great, but it can be quite useful in a pinch heal.)
Level 2 Special: Wild Grappler - Spawns a small HP Potion on hit, with a 60%-100% chance to spawn 2. Physical damage, single target, 4 hit, base damage ratio is 400 and goes up to 609 at S+ rank and max affinity. (Decent damage ratio, it’s good.)
Level 3 Special: Organic Automata - When landing a hit, restores 30%-50% of damage dealt to the whole party. Ether damage, very large circular AOE, 5 hit, does pierce damage, base damage ratio is 550 and goes up to 782 at S+ rank and max affinity. (A full heal, great damage and a nice amount of hits! Awesome special!)
Level 4 Special: Earth Priestess - No effect. Ether damage, single target, 5 hit (+3), has a 20% crit mod, does pierce damage, base damage ratio is 500 +500 from Driver. (Good for setting up fusion combos, the pierce is great, all in all it’s good.)
Ability 1: Restorative Fusion - Restores party’s HP on starting fusion combo. Effect improves with difficulty. (“Difficulty” is defined by the level of the combo, not the enemy or game setting. Heat plus break will be minor meanwhile mega eruption smash will be major. It goes 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 then 5. The math is done by counting the stages, such as a topple with a level two Blade combo will be 4, then timzing it by the level of the skill, so 4x5 will be 20 and thus a 20% heal. Pretty great!)
Ability 2: Synthesis Lore - Boosts Fusion Combo effect by 25%-50%. (It boosts EVERYTHING fusion combos do, not just damage! Super good and works so well with her element!)
Ability 3: Wild Familiars - Increases damage dealt to beasts by 40%-80%. (Not horrible since many enemies are classified as beasts, however it is still situational and not the best.)
Mods: Dexterity Mod 10%
Like she's a fine enough Blade, actually a pretty good knuckle claws. Fusion combos are great, but with her stats boosting them, it means she can be amazing with damage over time effects like volcano.
That said, she has never been a Blade I've particularly liked and yeah, it's partially her design. She's just the first in a line of Blades whose art did not translate onto models very well.
Anyways, those are all the noteable Blades from this pull! With Nim and Finch being so early, I'm inclined to believe I'm in group 4, however I didn't harbor enough points for Nim to be a pity Blade. We'll see who my next few pulls are to get a better guess of which group I'm in.

My first ever attempt at a whole roasted chicken 🥰🥰🥰 and honestly it came out so good. I've been seeing so many videos on British sunday roast dinners and I was like I NEED to make that. I made yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese casserole, roast potatoes and peas as the sides. I did my chicken a little differently though, I decided to marinate it overnight in mojo marinade and garlic salt. When I took it out the next day I patted it dry and then made a compound butter mixed with minced garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, sage and thyme, and spread that butter all over the chicken and underneath the skin. I had it roast on a bed of tricolor carrots, onions, garlic and mushrooms that was tossed in oil, salt, pepper, and sage. All that delicious juice that collected on the bottom I made into an absolutely divine gravy, the best I've ever made. It was so good I'm going to make this a regular thing for sure 😋 the chicken came out so flavorful and juicy. And I have chicken to last me all week ❤️

For the food ask, any thoughts about pasta made with veggies? Not veggies turned into pasta shapes (although that could work too,) but the green pasta that's got veggies packed into it. Tastes just like regular pasta but with more vitamins/minerals.
For desserts, maybe carrot/banana chocolate chip/zucchini bread or muffins? The fruit/veg is usually shredded and kind of dissolves when cooked, so no weird textures.
Do they like smoothies at all? They're a great way to pack in a lot of nutrients in a fairly smooth package. Yogurt, oatmilk, a banana and a handful of spinach turn into banana flavoured milk with protein and iron.
they're slightly weird about tricolor rotini not tasting right, but it's doable.
zuchinni/carrot/banana bread is a good thought, and I'll ask about the smoothies. these are all good thoughts!
thank you!!

Been a minute since actually making a garden post, so here’s a quick walkthrough of what I’ve got right now.
Tumblr media
Front porch containers have (left to right) peas, orange mint, beets, rosemary, pineapple mint (hidden behind the beware sign), and peppers. My own pepper seeds didn’t do too well this year (my fault, not the fault of the seed companies) so I had to get some starts.
Tumblr media
Out here I’ve got Arkansas Traveler tomatoes (front), Cherokee purple tomatoes (next to rain gauge), pattypan squash (back left tire) and some bush beans in the strawberry pot.
Tumblr media
My lemon tree hasn’t died yet so I’m still holding out hope for some some 7b lemons (along with a photo bomb from my garden assistant, Junie B)
Tumblr media
Here’s some acorn squash, Junie B, and my rainbow croc
Tumblr media
And the full row of cucurbit containers. Front to back is acorn squash, long neck pumpkins, Long Island cheese pumpkins, and moon and stars watermelon
Tumblr media
These daffodils were a pleasant surprise from the previous resident of this house ❤️
Tumblr media
The grow bags back here have (front to back, left to right) turmeric, ginger, sweet basil, tricolor thyme, habanero, carrots, and the back two are super sweet 100 tomatoes. (To shield questions about the sand, previous resident had a pool, I took the pool down)
Tumblr media
I decided to grow my strawberries where the native raspberries are, and so far the deer haven’t made an attempt on them yet
Tumblr media
Back here where I said I wouldn’t grow squash, I still got a few volunteers from when I threw out some seeds for the birds
Tumblr media
And lastly, the compost pile. I’ve got three squash volunteers, and a small pocket of either pepper or tomato volunteers (not visible in photo)
