MOST ANTICIPATED  2023 BOOK RELEASES
in fairness, “most anticipated” is a stretch. I’m not totally up on upcoming releases because I’m not really in the book community like I used to be. these are mainly titles I found interesting in a quick search
the stolen heir by holly black admittedly the folk of the air series is akin to fast food for me. like it sustains me exactly as long as it takes to finish it, and twenty minutes later I’ve forgotten all about it. however it’s a friend’s favorite series and I’m looking forward to their excitement enough that it’s elevating my own
song of silver, flame like night by amélie wen zhao the cover is beautiful and I’ve been leaning more into fantasy lately. it’ll be a bit of branching out since I’ve not read anything else by this author
emily wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries by heather fawcett another author I haven’t read and a cover that’s fun. I’m charmed by the summary of a socially struggling academic studying faerie folklore
the daughters of izdihar by hadeer elsbai it’s being shelved as lesbian and I’m shallow enough to be hooked on that alone. plus I love a good fight for your rights story so fingers crossed it fucks
vampire weekend by mike chen “about a boy meets what we do in the shadows” literally all this book has to do is be mildly good in the follow through and I’ll love it
clytemnestra by costanza casati I just think books about reviled women are something that can be so personal
Tumblr media
MOST ANTICIPATED  2023 BACKLIST READS
the golem and the jinni by helen wecker I read about 50 pages of this every six months and have never finished it. now that I listen to audiobooks, I’m determined to read it all. idk what’s stopped me since I enjoy it when I pick it up
sword of destiny and blood of elves by andrzej sapkowski I’m a good way through sword of destiny already. my witcher era never really ends but will shift between the show, the games, and the books.
cruel illusions by margie fuston it’s especially unfair to call this one a backlist read as it’s a very recent release. anyway, that noted, I just got the fairyloot edition and it’s so gorgeous. so this is kind of a vanity pick I’m hoping lives up to its presentation but vampires and magic and deadly games does sound dope
a closed and common orbit by becky chambers omg I was such a long way to a small, angry planet girlie when that was released only to then never read another in the series... planning to change that in 2023. I might even reread the first book because it’s been so damn long
saga, compendium one by brian k. vaughan saga has been tapping my shoulder lately begging to be reread and I definitely need the refresher before picking up vol.10
the ten thousand doors of january by alix e. harrow my favorite book in the world (top three at least) is the starless sea by erin morgenstern and no other book ever hits the way it does, but the ten thousand doors of january is always the first Similar Recommendation so it’s worth a shot

tag game: get to know my interests! thank you so much @maureenoharra for tagging me!
MUSIC
fav genre?: LITERALLY only three genres exist and it's adriana caselotti, ilene woods, and mary costa
fav band?: oooh good question...i really, really always loved the arctic monkeys and the killers, though sometimes it's a little depressing so i haven't listened to them as much as late
fav solo artist?: who can compare to the three deities i already mentioned???
last song you listened to?: the waiter and the porter and the upstairs maid! IMAGINE cinderella performing it tho omg
fav decade for music?: This is a really good question...30s are unbeatable, right??? But 50s are sooo good too
top 3 most listened songs recently?: "recently" lol this is pretty evergreen for me, but carol of the bells, i bring you a song, and so this is love
LITERATURE
fav genre?: i read biographies like mad as a child but i honestly like anything that was written before the 1950s, regardless of the genre, because the writing is always filled with so much life and different nuances in the jargon and characterizations
fav book?: i actively collect fairytale books from the 1880s - 1920s and they're my favorites of all! i have a running notepad of all the differences in approach to story and dialogue, etc etc, in each and those little shades of change from author to author are the most fascinating thing in the world to me
fav writer?: OK so i'm cheating because it was a film but helen deutsch gave us maybe one of the most richly besotting screenplays of all time
comfort book?: the vintage fairytale books!! but to be more specific, i love the movie comics that came out for the original three princesses when their films were released
fav biography?: honestly, maureen mccormick really went there and i'd like to know why, since she wasn't struggling for money or fame. but wow, what a story
TV AND MOVIES
fav tv show/movie genre?: i like older media (surprise) and traditional animation, but fantasy is good or slice of life
fav movie?: in order of premiere, snow white, cinderella, sleeping beauty, and the little mermaid always!
comfort movie?: apart from the ones above, the women
favorite decade for movies?: spilt between the early 30s and mid 50s
fav tv show?: if a better show than golden girls exists, i'd like to know what it is
comfort tv show?: house of mouse!
5 favorite characters?: i'm putting princesses aside so i'll say vanessa from tlm, fairy godmother, and the three good fairies but honorary mention to wendy
tv shows or movies | one episode a week or binging | one part or saga | horror movie or musical movie
tagging everyone who hasn't been tagged yet!

Households powered by energy firm Helen have recently been notified of an upcoming sharp increase in prices, Swedish-speaking newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (HBL) reports.
Prices are set to soar by 58 percent on average with the increase set to especially affect customers with contracts that are valid indefinitely.
Other electricity companies including Tampere's electric utility Tampereen Sähkölaitos, are also handing out similar notices, the paper writes. The Tampere firm is set to double its price per KwH from September.
As a customer, one has the right to cancel their contract if they do not approve of the increase, according to HBL. Nevertheless, it may be difficult to find an electricity supplier with more favourable prices, the paper adds.
Reform behind better education equality
A 2020 reform to make schooling compulsory (and thus free) up to the age of 18 has promoted education equality, a recent student poll by the Union of Upper Secondary School Student found, Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (HS) writes.
Since the reform took force, there are no fees associated with the studies, so students' no longer need to purchase their own tools, computers, or educational materials.
Almost half of first-year students who responded to the barometer said that access to free learning materials influenced their decision to enrol in upper secondary school, HS reports.
The lack of study and material fees has mostly benefited students whose native language is other than Finnish, those whose parents have not received a higher education, and those who have at least one unemployed parent, according to the poll.
Arena for sale
Capital-based Helsinki Halli, previously known as 'Hartwall Areena', has been put up for sale with the price tag estimated at a whopping 50 million euros, tabloid Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IL) reports.
The multipurpose arena located in Helsinki's Ilmala area has been lying more or less empty since the beginning of March this year.
Insider information retrieved by IL has revealed that at least five potential buyers have found interest in the property.
Secret hit song
A Finnish-produced song has found huge success via audio streaming platform Spotify, however few are familiar with its creator, Jani Oikarinen (artist name Janji), tabloid Ilta-Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun) (IS) writes.
Electronic dance music track Heroes Tonight (siirryt toiseen palveluun) has garnered more than 150 million listens. The song has made it to the top five most played Finnish-produced songs on the platform. Darude's Sandstrom is the only entirely Finnish-produced track on Spotify that has been streamed more often, according to IS.
A number of sports and video gameplay videos on YouTube have featured Heroes Tonight, contributing to its success.
"Emotional and upbeat is often a good combo," Oikarinen told Ilta-Sanomat.

Taylor Swift Dominates the Charts
Taylor Swift’s latest is the second biggest opening week in recorded history. The Tortured Poets Department racked up 2.61 million units in its first week, including 1.914 million physical sales. Taylor Swift’s 11th full-length studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, shattered countless records upon release. Notably, “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone has landed on top of the Billboard Hot 100 this week. “Fortnight” becomes Taylor’s 7th Billboard Hot 100 #1 debut, and her 12th overall #1 on the chart.    See below for other key highlights and listen to The Tortured Poets Department — HERE.    The Tortured Poets Department Highlights: Only artist to ever hold the entire top 14 on the Hot 100 Breaks record for most consecutive new albums with a Hot 100 #1 hit (8) Breaks record for most simultaneous Hot 100 debuts (31) All songs from The Tortured Poets Department debut top 55 Only artist to ever hold the entire top 10 on the Hot 100 twice Ties for most #1 hits on the Hot 100 this decade First female artist to earn at least 50 top 10 hits on Hot 100 First female artist with twelve #1 hits on the Hot 100 and twelve #1 albums on the Billboard 200.    WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT The Tortured Poets Department   “5 Stars” - Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield   “Instant Classic” - Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield   “The Tortured Poets Department combines the intimacy of Folklore and Evermore with the synth-pop gloss of Midnights to create music that's wildly ambitious and gloriously chaotic” - Rolling Stone, Rob Sheffield   “5 Stars” - Helen Brown, The Independent   “With its playful narratives and hooks like anchors, Swift’s 11th studio album is a terrific reminder of her storytelling powers” - The Independent, Helen Brown   “The whole album is a terrific reminder of the intense, personal connection Swift can conjure in song. She fills arenas and dominates the news agenda because listeners can relate to her starry dramas – her tales endow their own experiences with new electricity…Her ability to put her lines over is as compelling as ever. I defy anyone not to lean into Swift’s concisely charged storytelling.” - The Independent, Helen Brown   “5 Stars” - The Times, Will Hodgkinson    “The Tortured Poets Department is an ultra-confident, ballad-heavy, poetic yet grounded reflection on love in all its forms: destructive, blissful, fantastical, embittered and idealised. And although plenty of the scenarios are imagined, these poetic visions of love’s tangled strands come alive because they are grounded in real feelings.” - The Times, Will Hodgkinson   “5 Stars” - The Sunday Times, Dan Cairns   “Again and again the songs hit the mark, as rich and concise as a great short story collection and, as ever with Swift, conjuring a scene in an instant.” - The Sunday Times, Dan Cairns   “5 Stars” - iNews, Ed Power   “The Tortured Poets Department is an aesthetic triumph – who knew books and sad bangers could go together so well? But more than that it is a new chapter in Swift’s ongoing quest for pop perfection and a record brimming with moments to beguile fans new and old.” - iNews, Ed Power   “5 Stars” - The Arts Desk, Ellie Roberts   “Taylor Swift has once again alchemised pain and criticism into art, surpassing her own already astronomical influence on the music industry with an artefact that deserves to be celebrated forever.” - The Arts Desk, Ellie Roberts   “Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant” - USA Today, Melissa Ruggieri   “Taylor Swift’s vulnerability is her superpower.” - USA Today, Melissa Ruggieri     “‘I Can Do it With a Broken Heart’ is one of Swift’s best Trojan horses” - USA Today, Melissa Ruggieri    “...her 11th album feels like a bloodletting: A cathartic purge after a major heartbreak delivered through an ascendant vocal run, an elegiac verse, or mobile, synthesized productions that underscore the powers of Swift’s storytelling.” - AP News, Maria Sherman    ““Clara Bow” enters the pantheon of great final tracks on a Swift album.” - AP… https://chorus.fm/news/taylor-swift-dominates-the-charts-2/

12/8/23: It was 50 years ago today, December 8th, 1973, Wings would enter the U.S. Top 40 with their non-album single 'Helen Wheels'. Get it??? Yeah it was named after Paul and Linda's Land Rover. Not a bad tune, actually... it's totally a fun Pop/Rock song, and the usage of the Moog is always a turn-on. This video I linked is silly as hell, but kinda charming... I dunno... I just love the whole charade that Wings was like a real band and not Paul McCartney's band. Sorry, probably too soon since Denny Laine like just died last week... fucking Covid. RIP Denny, and RIP Linda too. The song peaked in early January '74 at #10.

While the mail component is great and there are many options for encrypted email hosts to use with it, I feel disappointed by the calendar component, which I thought offered in-house hosting of the calendar. I have an encrypted calendar through another server that I could hypothetically sync, but there is no option to add a calendar by link. Because anything on iCloud is inherently unencrypted, Canary should clarify that the calendar portion of the app is not encrypted. It only allows the option to sync/push a cloud-based calendar. Update: Canary does not appear to offer an option to create a calender within Canary. Fight hard to stick around AS-IS, Canary, and you'll have a long-term customer in me. I fear this app may be too good to be true, because everything that has both privacy and great UI seems to disappear faster than a Russian whistleblower. Looking forward to setting up the encrypted calendar which was the original draw for me. My only "con" thus far is no ability to turn off Categories/Favorites, a minor qualm.
#Canary mail privacy manual
More importantly, the IMAP allows manual setup of both mainstream and non-mainstream inboxes, and circumvents invasive features on top of offering PGP or the more widely-accepted SecureSend - love the toggle on individual drafts. Avatars are also a nice visual touch, along w/ ability to turn them off for more minimalist look. The color-coding on inbox/other areas is fantastic and helps prevent mixups. Barring any major complication or price increase I will be continuing w/ paid subscription at end of trial. I rarely write reviews but I feel compelled. I left my case number on the review like I was asked but never heard back…. Per developer request, ticket number: 16482 I write this so you can decide if this is a company you want to give your money too as they seem to change their mind (which is fine) but don’t put their customers first when they do it. Not only that I honestly tried to talk with them but “Helen” their representative didn’t really seem to want to help me out. I get needing the reoccurring revenue but it just didn’t sit right with me. I was told no and was told it didn’t matter what it was originally offered to me for at the beginning of the subscription. I contacted the help desk to see if they could authorize for me to get it for the $20 for life I had originally seen it for when I started the trial.

I thought this must be a mistake and purchased the Mac version. I thought this was weird because when I saw it on the desktop version it was $20 for life. As I was nearing the end of my trial, I went to purchase it and all of the sudden a subscription model was there.
#Canary mail privacy trial
When I started the trial it was $20 for the pro version. I was excited to purchase it for the price they had advertised which was $20 for the Mac and $20 for iOS for life. It's all coming full circle now. The 2014 Grand Final begins with another montage recapping Malmö 2013, including Emmelie's winning moment. The next scene shows her placing the trophy on the Copenhagen stage, allowing it to eject a light beam towards the sky. This summons several people to speed towards the arena via various means, set to “Dansevise”, Denmark's original winner. After that we cut to the live stage, where there's an actual sea of flags and people jumping. Next, fireworks explode to the tune of “Woo Hoo” by the 5.6.7.8's (did we really need this?) Finally, the Parade of Nations proceeds. This was around the time that Eurovision became bloated with filler. The interval starts with the hosts honouring the commentators. Then, several singers climb to the top of upright ladders to spread a message to the tune of “Ode to Joy”. This segment is a weird one. Next, the three hosts perform a comedic song called “Douze Points”, which feels like an SNL sketch. Then the most recent JESC winner (Malta's Gaia Cauchi) appears. After that, Pilou tours a Eurovision History Museum. Then Lise hands out favourite foods in the Green Room. And FINALLY we get to Emmelie De Forrest's performance. She starts with “Only Teardrops”, featuring some tree branch outfits and drummers hitting the floor. This is followed by “Rainmaker”, which even includes the lyrics “join us”! The “WAY OH WAY OH WAY YA” chant brings the crowd together, while an ensemble plays in the stage moat. All 26 finalists come out for the final chorus as well. The Eurovision Record Book continues tonight too, focusing on the Highest Note and the Most La's. The presenters are Lise Rønne, Nikolaj Koppel, and Pilou Asbæk. They extend the Nordic humour from last year, but nowhere near as funny as Petra. They handle the questionable spokesperson moments during the voting professionally though. Also, Pilou keeps inserting Chinese into everything, which is quite cringe and gets old quickly. The Postcards are creative and personal; where the respective artists construct their flags from a wide variety of materials, and then take a snapshot of them. The sequence ends with the stage lights dimming as a Windows shutdown sound effect plays. The stage consists of two walls of scaffolding converging on a corner. It's one of the more memorable designs. There's a wide LED screen behind this structure, and one on the floor. But the scaffolding boxes display images too, despite them being transparent. Multiple performances take advantage of this, as well as the scoreboard later on. The stage further includes two side ramps and a “moat” of water at the base. The Green Room, meanwhile, forms a V-shape located in the audience.
The betting odds were wild this year. Austria and the Netherlands weren't even in contention until the semi-finals aired. Instead, Armenia was the initial top favourite, with Sweden next in line. The UK were overestimated too. Austria held a narrow lead against the Netherlands for much of the voting. Even after the 30th country submitted, it was only a 13-point gap. But it wasn't long until the hosts declared Austria the winner prematurely, making the rest of the voting feel rushed again. Elsewhere, the Lithuanian spokesperson made a “time to shave” comment that was in poor taste. Russia were booed every time they received points. And Schlager queen Helene Fischer appeared for Germany! Ukraine: Mariya Yaremchuk - Tick-Tock I've seen weirder staging. Belarus: Teo - Cheesecake He doesn't pop his collar this time! Azerbaijan: Dilara Kazimova - Start a Fire I have to be in the right mood for this. Iceland: Pollapönk - No Prejudice Norway: Carl Espen - Silent Storm Romania: Paula Seling and Ovi - Miracle Armenia: Aram Mp3 - Not Alone Montenegro: Sergej Ćetković - Moj svijet Poland: Donatan and Cleo - My Słowianie – We Are Slavic Iconic. Greece: Freaky Fortune feat. RiskyKidd - Rise Up The song is made for jumping! Austria: Conchita Wurst - Rise Like a Phoenix (winner review below) Germany: Elaiza - Is It Right Following Austria in the running order is tough. But it's nice to see Germany incorporate traditional instrumentation. The verses rock back-and-forth to these twitches of accordion and double bass. While the chorus cascades and sways between booming percussion beats and clacks. The song's rhythm remains gradually paced throughout. It's like a leisurely dance at a folk festival. This seesaw production exemplifies the indecisiveness of the lyrics. The song is about not knowing the right decisions to make. The narrator observes one person with writers block, and another who's stuck in a loveless relationship. Elaiza aren't here to give advice, but they urge for an answer (“you can't hide”). Lead singer Ela gives corresponding gestures on stage. She concludes the song by showing off her vocals a cappella style. The chorus melody is catchy (“if you say yes... OR EVEN NO”) and the muffled “is it ri-i-i-ight” opening doesn't bother me either. Overall, there's nothing egregiously wrong with this entry, but it is quite "basic". The stage is simple too - those streamers don't do much.  Sweden: Sanna Nielsen - Undo France: Twin Twin - Moustache France straight-up trolled Eurovision this year, just like 2007 and 2008. And in return, they finished dead last for the first time. Not surprising considering the campy staging and subject matter. Although Moldova usually gets away with it. It's an odd visual between the puffy Mohawk and the clothing choices. There's also mustaches on the screens, wipe effects, and the lead singer takes a snapshot at one point. It's clear that Twin Twin aren't taking things seriously. In the song, the narrator obtains everything he could ask for – a penthouse, a luxury car, muscles – but he's unsatisfied because he doesn't have a mustache! Yeah, it's a silly premise. Plus the band's mocking tone makes it feel like a parody. Having said that, “Moustache” is an energetic song. The verses are lead by a beach-y guitar; before the sardonic “ba da ba ba ba” bit builds into the drop. The chorus then sees the banging dance-pop beat barrel through, alongside a rolling vocal distortion. Moreover, the “Je veux CI je veux ÇA” hook is catchy – and the way the band struts across the stage and jumps during it is effective. The two guitarists bop along throughout too. The song is kinda annoying though, and it does seem like Twin Twin are mocking their own song. Russia: Tolmachevy Sisters - Shine Just noticed the “shining” spotlights. Italy: Emma - La mia città This is Italy's worst result since their return. Perhaps Emma's intense stage presence was too much. She looks terrifying when she slithers across the ramp. She also pushes two band members aside, she collapses at the end, and her face is creepily displayed across the LED screen. Plus there's her hand motions, including the searching gesture and the pointing. Still, “La mia città” is a hectic rock song with an adrenalized chorus. The lyrics seem noncommittal. Emma spends the first verse disliking city life, against a floating guitar groove and a “clap-clap... clap” drum rhythm. The vibe is like she's gearing up for something. The chorus, meanwhile, turns into a rushing/jogging instrumental as she runs back and forth from the city. It captures the atmosphere of indulging in the hook-up. Also, the “E corro corro” bit, and how the melody spikes around “...ho un freno” are good hooks. The chorus ends with a “voglio te” (I want you) repetition and an intrusive, lurching guitar. The second verse sees Emma change her mind – she now loves meeting up in the city. On stage, there's white and gold clothing and crowns, which I guess is a Roman motif. Overall, it's angst-y song and Emma brings a menacing attitude. Slovenia: Tinkara Kovač - Round and Round Finland: Softengine - Something Better Spain: Ruth Lorenzo - Dancing in the Rain Once again, a female vocal ballad puts Spain at 10th place. Ruth previously came 5th in the X Factor UK 2008 (the one with Alexandra Burke and JLS). She now brings those powerhouse vocals to Eurovision... to the point of unpleasant screaming. Her unleashing shouts of “THE RAIN THE RAIN” are headache-inducing. That said, the song does begin as a graceful piano ballad. There's even a rain sound effect in the mix, Ruth's hair looks wet, and the stage visually depicts raindrops falling pretty realistically. Spain made sure to embrace this titular metaphor. The chorus, meanwhile, moves like a slow dance (“danc..ing.. in.. the.. RAAAAIN!”). The second verse then introduces the forceful percussion claps while some strings poke in between. The song is about making the best out of a bad situation. It has an open atmosphere with a tone of hope and triumph. The instrumental stays firm, while Ruth projects with crazy intensity. When the final chorus hits, she leans back for the big note. The backing also adds support to the bridge. Ruth is a confident performer, and the stage is cool, but I've never been a fan of over-singing like this just to show off. Switzerland: Sebalter - Hunter of Stars Hungary: András Kállay-Saunders - Running Malta: Firelight - Coming Home Denmark: Basim - Cliche Love Song Denmark sure are channeling Bruno Mars with this one. Basim gleefully indulges in the 1970s, as the stage is filled with tuxedos, an afro and beige lighting. The performers exhibit some joyous energy and savvy choreography here. But all these “scooba dooba...”'s, whistles, and “boom boom boom”'s become annoying quickly. The song is constantly grabbing my attention. Although the “boom”'s get a pass thanks to the emphatic percussion bangs (which reappear on the “IT FEELS LIKE” transition); and the bright light effect. The instrumental follows a prominent drum rhythm, accompanied by snaps and a rapid tinkling piano. It only rests during the bridge, where Basim gives a heartfelt plea directly to the camera. The song describes Basim's one-sided feelings over a girl that's hard to get. There's even a Katy Perry reference! The lyrics are meta by admitting their own cliches; meaning that the song is deriding the very thing it's paying homage to. Basim also seems a bit smarmy. And I rolled my eyes at that “Love” banner. Still, it's a bright and eager song, with a breezy pace, and a chorus that gets stuck in my head. The backing dancers elevate it too with their charming energy and ad libs. Netherlands: The Common Linnets - Calm After the Storm San Marino: Valentina Monetta - Maybe United Kingdom: Molly - Children of the Universe This is refreshing after the UK kept sending legacy artists every year, but the song is still "mid". The verse/chorus contrast stands out. The former is driven by a forceful, protesting, marching drum beat; centered around this “POWER TO THE PEOPLE!” chant that commands fist pumping. The pre-chorus sees the drums vanish, as the strings glide then jab. The chorus, meanwhile, switches to a relaxed pop-dub beat, as the backing vocalists add comforting “ohhhhh”'s. These disparate sections balance anxiety and embrace; although the chorus melody is kinda "blah". Otherwise, the song starts with a fairy-tale piano slide. And the final chorus inserts a brief pause and a fire curtain. It's an inspirational peace song. The title is a reference to the poem “Desiderata”, which promotes inner peace by validating our purpose to exist. Molly addresses drug addiction in the first verse, and “passive violence” in the second. She urges rising against all that. On stage, the backing members wear feathery shoulder pads, while Molly displays arm/palm tattoos. I guess it's an environmental aesthetic. Molly's raspy voice adds character as well. I like certain parts of this song, but it isn't powerful or cohesive enough. It lacks that special/impressive/"wow" factor to win, and it's too "basic" to win, despite what the odds said. The Winner: So Austria places themselves in that Eurovision Record Book by achieving the longest gap between wins at 48 years. The only active country that could break that record right now is Spain (and France in 2026). This was also Austria's first top 10 since 2003... which was a novelty entry. Since then, they've submitted a series of flops, skipped 4 contests, and did okay with jury bait in 2011. They were probably one the least expected countries to win. In the process, Austria also proved that it was still possible to win from the first half, which hadn't happened since 2004. Much of that comes down to Conchita, who seems like SUCH a lovely person in the Green Room. The conservative backlash was ridiculous. But the fact that millions of voters validated a drag queen with a beard was wonderful. This contest is about inclusiveness after all. But it wasn't just about sending a giant middle finger to the anti-LGBT – “Rise Like A Phoenix” is an epic song in its own right, and Conchita delivers a showstopping live performance. Watching her in the second semi-final instantly screamed “WINNER”. The song is akin to a James Bond theme; not too dissimilar from Adele's “Skyfall” (to pull an example from the time). It opens with a blast of brass (and strings) to grab attention, much like “Eurphoria”'s foghorn. The first verse is a subdued, isolating piano ballad, where Conchita awakens in the aftermath of the damage. She sounds like she's adjusting to her surroundings. This experience has changed her so much that she no longer recognizes herself. The screen, meanwhile, depicts raindrops of fire. The song then intensifies during the “from the fading light I fly” transition, which is also a powerful hook. The orchestra swells in the ensuing chorus, as Conchita affirms her self-growth rather than seeking “vengeance” or “retribution”. She sounds courageous; like she's defending her own self-worth. The titular metaphor “Rise Like A Phoenix” is a straightforward one – phoenixes die in a burst of flames and are reborn from the ashes. The chorus ends with the line “But you're my flame”; ie. this person was the catalyst for her transformation. In the second verse, Conchita scoffs at the unfairness of how the other person resumes their life unaffected. She sounds bitter about it. The strings become heavier in the second chorus, while flame wings appear behind Conchita. The bridge then sees the instrumental pause upon “you threw me down”, before it holds suspense through the decelerating drums. She screams “I'M GONNA FLY” as the screen bursts into flames. This is SUCH an epic final chorus transition by the way. The song ends with bang – another horn blast and a pyro eruption. “Rise Like a Phoenix” is an empowering song. The chorus reaches maximum impact and Conchita's vocals are massive. It's bombastic but never annoyingly so. Her theatrical style allows the melodrama to flourish as well. She sounds like a fighter who has endured and overcome. Whether the lyrics are about a hurtful ex or LGBT discrimination, it works in both contexts. She also appears self-confident in an elegant dress. The red stage aesthetic works too. Verdict: “A” Tier. 2009-2014 was a such strong stretch of winners (if you ignore 2011). This year may have been another tough one for many of us but there is no doubt some incredible music has come out of that. Here I have shortlisted my personal Top 50 songs of the year for you to enjoy!
Every year it is so difficult to pick just 50 songs from all the phenomenal music being released and believe me, there were so many more songs and artists that I love that deserve to be on this list. This is a playlist of songs that I’ve connected with on lots of different levels and for different reasons which I have attempted to explain as best I can! Some you may agree with and some you may not, but that’s the beautiful thing about music.
I really hope that you can connect to some of these songs too, and/or discover your new favourite artist/band. That’s what we are all about here at She Makes Music. Happy New Year and we’ll see you in 2022! - Helen Evans, Founder/Editor
Kaleena Zanders - 'SET ME OFF'
Explosive and captivating singer, songwriter and producer Kaleena Zanders first came to our attention at the very beginning of the year with her powerful single 'SET ME OFF'. I was instantly hooked and the song was our first Track of the Week for 2021. I see a very bright future for this talented artist!

Baby Queen - 'Raw Thoughts'
Now, many may consider 2021 to be the year of Olivia Rodrigo (which is 100% a fair accolade!) but for me personally, this was the year of Baby Queen. Every single song this singer has released since her debut 'Internet Religion' last year has been an absolute banger. The soaring 'Raw Thoughts' is my favourite (only by a millimetre!). She is such a refreshing, candid and cool af artist. If Baby Queen isn't on your radar, then she needs to be..stat.
youtube
Griff - 'Black Hole'
Even though she has been on our radar since her Mirror Talk EP, I just knew Griff would steadily be on the rise this year after her 2020 Christmas single 'Love Is A Compass' and it all kicked off with the superb 'Black Hole'. This song is insanely catchy and the lyrics are so melodramatic, I love it.
youtube
Allie X - 'GLAM!'
Now, I know this isn't technically a brand new song (last year it was included on a physical limited edition double LP of Allie X's first two records, CollXtion I and CollXtion II, which included previously unreleased demos and leaks from that time period - and 'GLAM!' was one of those) but Allie X released 'GLAM!' for the first time on streaming platforms this year and so for me, it definitely counts. I absolutely adore this song for so many reasons. It is a proper sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-into-your-hairbrush kind of pop banger.
ALLIE X · GLAM!
sad alex - 'dating myself'
sad alex is another pop singer-songwriter that has been on the rise this year, although still very underrated in my opinion! She released the fantastic 'dating myself' around Valentine's day this year as a celebration of single life and falling in love with yourself and it is a very empowering bop.
sad alex · dating myself
Glades - 'Dancing In Mirror'
And from one inspiring hit to another! 'Dancing In the Mirror' is the self-empowerment anthem from Aussie pop outfit Glades. These past two years have had so many people doubting and being unkind to themselves (myself included) so this song is a reminder to be kinder and to learn to love yourself. I can't help but dance in the mirror to this song!
GLADES · Dancing in the Mirror
Jetty Bones - 'Nothing'
Jetty Bones is another artist that we were introduced to this year and anyone that has followed the blog for a long time will know that I am a sucker for anything that sounds like it belongs in the '80s. Especially if it includes a killer sax solo. So this song, 'Nothing', was always going to be a hit with me and I hope you love it too!
youtube
Shungudzo - 'There's only so much a soul can take'
Shungudzo makes flipping off white supremacist patriarchy seem as refreshing as daily moisturiser on her vibrant track 'There's only so much a soul can take.' The Zimbabwean-American is equal parts activist and artist, making sure that her pop songs are energising and compelling. So many of us are currently suffering from varying systemic afflictions: stresses about health, money, all types of discrimination, pressures of social media etc and this is an anthem for us all. The song reeled me in hook line and sinker at that very first line: "People really piss me off.."
youtube
Sarah Harding - 'Wear It Like A Crown'
Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding very tragically passed away earlier this year from breast cancer. She was 39. So, so unbelievably heartbreaking. She gave us one, brilliant final gift though in releasing her solo song 'Wear It Like A Crown'. Again, not a brand new song, she recorded it a decade ago but this year was the first time fans have heard it. And it is a certified banger right from the outset.
MARINA - 'Purge The Poison'
MARINA is one of my absolute favourite lyricists. She's a pure wordsmith! I was so happy to have her back this year with Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land and 'Purge the Poison' is a masterpiece. Although she is considered pretty mainstream, I still don't think she gets the recognition she deserves. All hail Queen MARINA!
youtube
Wolf Alice - 'Smile'
I was ecstatic when Wolf Alice announced their new album Blue Weekend and I couldn't wait to hear it. And it did not disappoint. Definitely one of the records of the year. The band just keep getting better and better. They should be headlining every single festival from here on out. 'Smile' is my favourite song on the album, it gives me feels I can't even explain.
youtube
Laura Mvula - 'Got Me'
Laura Mvula went 80s and I am so here for it! This is a sound that suits her so well, I love it. 'Got Me' also has everything I want in a song. Loving the Bad-era MJ vibes. It's slick, infectious and you just have to dance to it. It was always going to be one of my favourite songs this year.
youtube
CHVRCHES feat. Robert Smith - 'How Not to Drown'
It's no secret that CHVRCHES are one of my favourite bands but you may not know that The Cure are also one of my favourite bands of all time. So having Robert Smith feature on 'How Not to Drown' is just an absolute dream come true for me. Another song that was always going to be on this list no matter what.
youtube
Lorde - 'Solar Power'
I really needed this song. I needed this song so very badly. I can actually feel the warmth of the sun shining down on me every time I listen to 'Solar Power'. Lorde never fails to deliver. I'm so happy she blessed us with her exquisite new album this year.
youtube
Maisie Peters - 'Psycho'
Maisie Peters is another fantastic British singer-songwriter that has gifted us a truly wonderful album in 2021, You Signed Up For This. An instant earworm, 'Psycho' is so insanely catchy and extremely relatable. I only see Maisie rising higher and higher into the stratosphere.
youtube
AURORA - 'Cure For Me'
AURORA's voice is my favourite of all time. I get chills every damn time I hear it. I could listen to her sing the phone book all day every day and would never grow tired of it. And she is such a special and pure human being. Her single 'Cure For Me' is so precious. I love the carnival-esque organ and the empowering lyrics. How anyone could not like AURORA is beyond me.
youtube
July Jones feat. Suzi Wu & GIRLI - 'Butterflies'
July Jones burst onto the scene this year with this incredible song 'Butterflies' featuring two of our faves, Suzi Wu and GIRLI. Edgy electro-pop that is unapologetically queer, 'Butterflies' comes straight from the heart and I love how unusual the chorus sounds, it's so unique. It's bad ass. Truly.
youtube
UPSAHL - 'Time of my Life'
UPSAHL is one of the greatest pop songwriters of this generation. Her debut album Lady Jesus is utterly brilliant from the first note to the last. 'Time of my Life' is my favourite song on the record. It's ridiculously relatable and undeniably catchy. She should be so much bigger than she is right now but there is plenty of time for her to take over the pop world.
youtube
Annie Chops - 'Level Up'
We discovered Germany's Annie Chops completely by accident this year and I couldn't be more grateful! 'Level Up' is so sassy, bold and energetic. I fell in love with the track instantaneously. Hoping to hear more from Annie in the future!
youtube
Charli XCX - 'Good Ones'
You can always guarantee a Charli XCX song to make my end of year list, providing she has released one of course! 'Good Ones' is Charli on absolute top form and the video is fire! I cannot wait for her new album next year. I have also been enjoying her Best Song Ever podcast which I highly recommend! Charli is a pop goddess and she deserves all the awards coming her way and more.
youtube
Fickle Friends - 'Love You to Death'
I have kept close tabs on Fickle Friends since the beginning and they always deliver solid gold pop bops. 'Love You to Death' is no different. It's so deliciously funky and I can't wait to get my teeth into their new album early next year. And hopefully get to see them live again!
Fickle Friends · Love You to Death
Dlina Volny - 'Tomorrow'
I have always been partial to a bit of darkwave/post punk and Dlina Volny are one of my favouite bands within the genre. The chord changes in 'Tomorrow' are just divine. I don't know how else to describe it. Whenever I hear the song I can just picture myself walking around Minsk on an icy winter's day. Bliss.
youtube
Near Tears - 'Love Under Surveillance'
Blending ’80s-set pop sounds with eerie modern dating rituals and technologies, ‘Love Under Surveillance’ by Near Tears is a refreshing take on falling in love over the internet. Extremely relatable for this generation! This song has massive sing-a-long energy, I love it so much.
youtube
Avril Lavigne - 'Bite Me'
Another artist that made a huge comeback this year is pop punk princess Avril Lavigne. I get transported back in time when I hear 'Bite Me', it's so nostalgic but also really fresh. It's difficult to explain. And having Travis Barker on drums is the icing on the cake for me. The girl is back on top!
youtube
Little Simz - 'Introvert'
Little Simz is one of the best rappers in the world right now. Not just in the UK, or the best 'female' rapper..one of THE BEST RAPPERS. Period. I thought that GREY Area would be hard for Little Simz to top but she's gone and done it with Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. 'Introvert' is a masterpiece and Little Simz should be headlining festivals all over the world.
youtube
Wet Leg - 'Chaise Longue'
Wet Leg have undoubtedly been THE buzziest band of 2021. The Isle Of Wight duo's tongue in cheek humor thrives on hypnotic debut single, 'Chaise Longue.' It is honestly one of the greatest debut singles in a very long time and I am hyped for the album next year. The band seem like so much fun, I would love to see them live. Here's hoping I can make that happen in 2022!
youtube
Remi Wolf - 'Quiet On Set'
I literally cannot stop myself from bopping along to Remi Wolf's music. She has released some corkers this year and 'Quiet On Set' is just bonkers, I love it! Juno is a brilliant debut album, one of my favourites this year and I can't wait to see what Remi does next!
youtube
Halsey - 'I am not a woman, I'm a god'
Halsey and Trent Reznor is a match made in heaven. If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power is such an iconic record for so many reasons. The production on 'I am not a woman, I'm a god' is flawless. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's a modern classic for sure.
youtube
Xenia Rubinos - 'Cogelo Sauave'
Xenia Rubinos is another artist that I think is totally overlooked. She's incredible! I can't even tell you why I love this song so much, I just do. The beat, the sounds she makes with only her voice, it's all amazing. I also have a deep affinity for the artwork. I had a fibreoptic flower lamp just like that when I was younger (I think I might still have it somewhere!) so it makes me feel very warm and fuzzy inside.
youtube
Magdalena Bay - 'Chaeri'
I have been a huge Magdalena Bay fan since the beginning and I can't tell you how excited I was when they announced their debut album. Mercurial World is everything I thought it would be and more. 'Chaeri' is just a perfect song, a massive club banger, very Robyn. And it's very relatable.
youtube
Sleigh Bells - 'Locust Laced'
The energetic and intense duo that is Sleigh Bells are back and better than ever! One of the best bands I've ever seen live. Texis is the band on absolute top form and 'Locust Laced' was the best way to introduce the LP. It's classic Sleigh Bells with it's cranked-to-11 guitar riffs and blown-out electronic percussion raging beneath Alexis Krauss’ sugar-rush vocals as she belts, “I feel like dynamite/I feel like dying tonight!” Superb.
youtube
AJA - 'Red Button'
AJA is a very, very talented 17 year old pop star out of Toronto. 'Red Button' is a punchy, empowering track about declining the calls of someone that has broken your heart. A feeling I'm sure we've all been able to relate to at some point or another in our lives! I love how the song flows and it's a great tune to sing along to. AJA will be one to watch in 2022 for sure!
youtube
Slayyyter - 'Cowboys'
Another highly anticipated album released this year was Slayyyter's Troubled Paradise. I love how she can create big budget-sounding pop but completely DIY. It can be done folks! ‘Cowboys’ is a different style to the type of pop fans have come to known the LA-based singer for. Instead of the glitchy hyperpop of her other recent releases, ‘Cowboys’ sees her sing over a fuzzy guitar riff in a style more akin to noise pop stalwarts Sleigh Bells or Charli XCX‘s earlier work (both of which you already know, I am a huge, huge fan of!).

All Ears Avow - 'Be That Nothing'
Swindon based quartet All Ears Avow are another great band we discovered this year. 'Be That Nothing' is one of those songs that I fell in love with instantly. Written by the band during the first COVID lockdown, ‘Be That Nothing' explores the grim reality we were all forced to face, but it's also a celebration of how, within the constraints of the pandemic, we all had to discover new ways to find excitement and get that stress release. Many of us discovered truths about ourselves that we had never known before and were compelled to confront them.

MØ - 'Live To Survive'
MØ is another SMM favourite. The Danish legend consistently drops banger after banger. I'm excited for Motordrome next year. 'Live to Survive' is a europhic track about pulling yourself through a shitty time and coming back stronger on the other side. Another song I definitely needed to hear this year!

Maddie Ross - 'Ears Bunny'
LA's Maddie Ross is a CRIMINALLY underrated artist in my humble opinion. The post-breakup, riff-heavy ‘Ears Bunny' starts as a minimal—albeit cheeky—synth-pop number which then erupts into a guitar-heavy chorus with Ross’ vocal delivery landing somewhere between the recent vengeful output of illuminati hotties and dollar sign–era Kesha. It's a killer track.

Iris Gold - 'Girl Pick Up Your Drum'
Iris Gold has been on our radar for many years now but it's since the release of 'Girl Pick Up Your Drum' that she has really caught our attention. Iris Gold teamed up with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart on the uplifting single. Over the lush guitar riffs, punchy drum grooves, Gold bares it all and pours her inner strength on wax as she breaks free from societal norms that have long restricted women. With her distinctive commanding vocals, she declares her independence with zeal and encourages her sisters to do the same and pick up the proverbial drum of strength.

Dead Sara - 'Hypnotic'
Alt rockers Dead Sara are, I feel, another extremely underrated band. The boot stomping anthem 'Hypnotic', from their excellent new album Ain't It Tragic, drips with swagger as frontwoman Emily Armstrong admits to being self-conscious, but says screw it, she knows she’s “a goddess.” The boastful confidence mixed with self-deprecation makes it a fun, yet honest song and I can't get enough of it!

Willow Kayne - 'Two Seater'
Taking cues from hip hop culture and '90s pop, London's Willow Kayne burst onto the scene this year with her major-label debut 'Two Seater'. Kayne takes us on a rollercoaster ride through mesmerising rapped verses before revealing her softer side with a soothing hook. It's an undeniable bop and I can't wait to hear more from Willow in 2022!

BXB LOVE - 'IGNORANCE SONG'
BXB LOVE, whose real name is Natasha Pheko, previously performed under the moniker Phé. Where her previous project had a more smooth and sensual sound, BXB LOVE has a more aggresive, industrial pop rock vibe and I am so here for it.  'IGNORANCE SONG' is a fresh, exhilarating and curious track of self-discovery which reflects the music BXB LOVE wants to be making and I can't wait to hear more and see what she does next.

Marian Hill - 'omg'
We have been champions of the fabulous Philly duo Marian Hill since the very beginning and they are still churning out hit after hit. They have released a few excellent singles this year but 'omg' is the stand out track for me. Samantha Gongol’s confidence immediately shines through with her vocals and lyrics on 'omg'. She sings “don’t need you so don’t get defensive” in such an airy and nonchalant way that makes her audience experience the same kind of self-assurance. It's a slinky, sexy number that I can't get enough of!

Blu DeTiger - 'Vintage'
Bass player extroadinaire Blu DeTiger throws it back to the 80's with her funky indie pop song 'Vintage'. Her claim, “I’m a vintage girl” covers her personality and her musical style; it’s what makes her stick out from other pop artists. And that bass line is just to die for. Never ever could resist a funky bass line.

Jenevieve - 'Résumé'
Jenevieve's debut album Division is glorious. I've kept a close eye on her ever since I heard the brilliant 'Baby Powder' last year. She bemoans being on her former flame’s romantic CV on the smooth album stand out ‘Résumé’ and boy, is it an addictive track. Jenevieve is poised to be the next big thing in R&B. Mark my words!

Charlotte Cornfield - 'Partner in Crime'
Canadian singer-songwriter Charlotte Cornfield released her new album Highs in the Minuses this year and there is something about the track 'Partner in Crime' that I adore but can't quite put my finger on. It's not normally a song I would be drawn to but I love the lyrics, the plodding beat of the song and the chord changes. Not to mention the brilliant Wes Anderson Bottle Rocket-inspired video.

Amyl and the Sniffers - 'Hertz'
Amyl and the Sniffers are another band that just keep on getting better and better. The Aussie punks' excellent album Comfort to Me was released this year and I think it's a record I will always turn to when I want to hear something raw and primal. 'Hertz' is a ripper of a track about the frustration of being stuck in one place. The perfect escapist anthem.

MUNA feat. Phoebe Bridgers - 'Silk Chiffon'
MUNA and Phoebe Bridgers. Another match made in heaven. 'Silk Chiffon' is THE queer anthem of the year. Between swooning acoustic and gilded guitar riffs Katie Gavin lets loose her crystalline vocals, singing about the kind of exuberant and intoxicating feeling that makes you feel weak at the knees when your crush is near. I love the 'Teenage Dirtbag' vibes of this track.

Poppy Ajudha - 'Change Your Mind'
Poppy Ajudha epitomises the uniquely diverse musical culture that exists in London. With her singular blend of R&B, soul and pop, she is unafraid to stand up for what she believes in. Her lyrics speak of feminism, colonialism, gender politics, current social issues and more. 'Change Your Mind' is a poignant song which sees Poppy imploring a male friend to see things from a woman's perspective. It's a truly beautiful track and has me welling up every time I listen to it.
youtube
Noa Kirel - 'Bad Little Thing'
I just love Noa Kirel’s unapologetic confidence, and her single, ‘Bad Little Thing,’ is the perfect example of that. Touching on her beauty, wealth, and success, the lyrics let her boast about everything she’s proud of over a fun sax-tinged instrumental (you know I love that sax!) It's catchy, it's fun, it's bold, it's a pop stunner.
youtube
Isabella Manfredi - 'Jealousy'
I was gutted when The Preatures announced their break up this year but only a day later, frontwoman Isabella Manfredi released her incredible debut solo single 'Jealousy' and I was no longer sad because it is a BOP and it makes me very excited for her solo album. 'Jealousy' is highly relatable for me and that slap and pop bass makes me swoon every time.

LØLØ - 'die without u'
LØLØ has been making waves this year with her brand of vibrant alt-pop. She is an artist that blows me away time and time again with her honesty in her music. She's a brilliant lyricist and I have loved every single song she released this year. 'die without u' is the track I connect with most being about that love-hate relationship you can sometimes have with a partner!

7/28/23: It was 50 years ago today, July 28th, 1973, Helen Reddy would enter the U.S. Top 40 with her #1 blue-eyed soul hit 'Delta Dawn'. It's a little cheesy, but it's not a bad song... however, I invite you to go check out the Bette Midler version which is much better. No foolin'.
