Ok time to nyoom my way through a bunch of things I tried briefly, mostly demos, before I forget them entirely.
Toodee and Topdee is I think the only one that wasn't a demo. I loved the idea when I first saw the trailer but didn't get around to buying/trying it until this month. It was fun at first but started getting kind of fiddly as it went on in a way I wasn't loving, and then when it started having enemies I could tell it was going to progress in a way I wasn't going to have fun with. Still think the idea's great anyway.
I was also immediately interested in Pepper Grinder when I saw the original announcement of it, and the demo for it was almost as good as I'd been hoping it would be. It took me a little bit to get used to how it controls, but it seems like it has a lot of potential and I'll definitely get the full game some day.
I randomly clicked on the Witch's Rhythm Puzzle demo because it showed up in the list of demos and I figured why not. It's hornier than I expected and than I would like, but it's also actually kind of fun? Enough that I'd consider getting it on sale for a dollar or two, but it's very low priority.
I tried both Yohane the Parhelion demos because I'd seen someone on my Steam friends list playing one of them before and wondered what the deal is. The deal turns out to be that I don't actually like them very much. Oh well.
I finally gave in and tried the Blue Reflection: Second Light demo. I'd been reluctant to touch any of the Blue Reflection games after hearing they're kinda fanservicey, but I keep seeing them recommended by people who don't usually go in for stuff like that saying good things about them, like women saying they're cute/cozy and appreciating the magical girl aspects, so I had to find out for myself. I liked it more than I expected and could see maybe getting it on sale some day, but it's not super high on my list.
The Sea of Stars demo was a little underwhelming. I had pretty high expectations, and it was only pretty good instead of amazing. It looks great and feels pretty decent to play, but I didn't love the dialogue. I still intend to play it one of these days and see if it grows on me though.
And then finally the Unicorn Overlord demo confirmed that I was right to have it as my most anticipated game of the year. The story and gameplay didn't quite grab me to the same degree as 13 Sentinels did right away, but it seems like it has a ton of potential in both areas and I'm pretty excited for it. If it lives up to what the demo hints at I could easily see it being one of my favorite games I play this year (although I'm currently playing Jack Jeanne, which is going to give it some strong competition).

3/5. Fun concept, but too much emphasis on speedrunning for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This game has a really cool premise - a platformer where you switch between top down and side scrolling characters in the same level. And most of the game was super fun! I love platforming, and I found the levels challenging but not too impossible. The boss fights were similarly fun. The story was cute with a lot of fun coding-related jokes, and I enjoyed the writing.
Tumblr media
Howver, towards the end it really got to be just a test of speed, which I hate. I actually turned off dying for the entire last world so I could cheese through it because I found the speed challenges so irritating. Also, I felt like by that point the game had kind of run its course. So overall, I liked the concept but I don't know if it could really sustain itself for the entire game. But if you love speedrun platforming challenges, maybe you'll really like this one!

10 Games Research - Part 1: Similar Gameplay/Mechanics
Spelunky 2:
Tumblr media
While Spelunky would mainly be classed as a rogue-like, it has elements of a platformer in there which make it similar to my games overall gameplay at a basic level, I'm looking at it due to the player movement and platformer type traversing of the ingame world, It's unique selling point is how it's map is randomly generated, giving a new caving/exporation experience each playsession.
Super Mario Odyssey:
Tumblr media
Super Mario Odyssey is a 3D platformer game, in which you pair up with a sentient cap that allows Mario to control other characters and objects. I feel that the mechanic of the hat being able to control the environment is somewhat similar to my main mechanic affecting the environment. The unique selling point of this game i'd say would be the hat itself, never before in a Mario game has the player been able to control anything other than Mario.
Super Happy Fun Block
Tumblr media
SHFB, I would not call a platformer exactly *however* it has one MAJOR similarity, and that's between switching realities. The whole premise is to switch to stop the "Ablockalypse" and in an even more similar twist, your color changes between realities just like my original idea, because of this, I think that this mechanic gives this game it's unique selling point.
Toodee And Topdee
Tumblr media
Toodee And Topdee is a puzzle-platformer game and what makes this similar is the perspective switching, in the sense of the environment of sorts. What give this it's unique selling point is the fact that when switching characters, you switch between a top-down experience, and a 2D platformer experience.
Fireboy And Watergirl
Tumblr media
Fireboy and Watergirl is a flash game in which two different characters are controlled in order to solve puzzles, similarly to my game, it has liquids that are only traversable by the set character, fireboy being lava, and watergirl being water which I believe also gives this game it's USP. Additionally, there are extra gems which can be collected by same set characters, and are color co-ordinated as such.

Toodee and Topdee Review (PlayStation 5)
Tumblr media
For this Toodee and Topdee Review, where we play A cosmic turbulence caused the 2D Platformer and the Top-Down Puzzler dimensions to merge! Switch between Toodee and Topdee and their unique perspectives to overcome hard-as-nails challenges, solve mind-melting puzzles and defeat huge bosses.
Toodee and Topdee Review Pros:
- Decent modern pixel art graphics. - 149.7MB download size. - Platinum trophy. - You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game. - Graphics settings - screenshake, 3D effect, black outlines, thick outlines, show background, foreground effects, and v-sync. - Difficulty settings - health (1-infinite), game speed (25/50/75/100%), air jumps, telekinesis, super strength, and boss checkpoints. - Can rebind controls. - Game timer option. - Two-player local play support. - 2D platformer gameplay. - 3 save slots. - Gameplay settings do not affect trophies. - Six chapters to go through. - In game fmv cutscenes. - You can skip cutscenes within the menu. - Opening tutorial levels showcasing the controls. - The camera pans on a 3D pivot as you go through a level. (optional) - In Single Player, you can swap between each character with a button press. - Puzzle elements throughout. - Such a clever idea. - Easy to learn controls. - Bright happy atmosphere. - The goal of the game is to get both players to the exit by any means possible. - Co-op settings - enable, and swapping characters. - Drop in and out Co-op. - Restart option in the pause menu. - How it works is one character is played in traditional 2D and the other character is on a 3D pivot and can freely move around more than the other. - Has an element of Mario Maker about it especially with the placing of blocks and setting up the level to have it completable. - Lightning-fast loading times. - Level select screen. - You can replay levels. - Each completed level shows the fastest completion time, how many restarts, and the death count. - Big boss encounters. - Reminds me of the Adventures of LoLo on the NES. - Each area introduces cool new enemy types and mechanics to learn. Toodee and Topdee Review Cons: - No online multiplayer. - The slight slowdown in places. - Annoying that the skip cutscenes are in the pause menu. - Takes a bit of getting used to the camera pivot between 2D and 3D. - Any mess-up requires a whole-level restart. - The movement is very immediate and can catch you off guard. - No leaderboards. - Little replay value if you don't care for completion. Games Played in 2022
New year, new list of games I played LAST year! Once again I’m honestly pretty embarrassed by how much I bought this year. This was another year where I was very stressed out, particularly by work. And so I took a lot of commission and work breaks, then got more stressed, then stress bought more games. And what I’m getting at is that I started 2023 pretty fucking broke. But A) I’m about to be more broke cause I haven’t bought anything from the Steam Winter Sale and B) That just means I need to reopen commissions and work SUPER hard to get enough money to spend crazy amounts again.
For context, when I buy like a bajillion games at once it is me taking advantage of sales. So I’m not like, spending $60 on each of these games individually. Regardless, you can see the list under the readmore!
Key
Present - Game was given to me by someone else
Gift - I gave the game to someone else, but I can still play that copy
Free - I got the game for free
Preorder - I preordered it, obviously
And as always I only put games on here that I played for the first time or had the intention of beating for the first time or reached a big milestone in for the first time. I won’t include Mario Kart 8 for example, I played it a lot this year. But I played it a lot last year too.

And there you have it! Everything I played throughout the year. I’m sure it’s missing some stuff but it’s good enough for me. Now you all can see the weird shit I spent actual money on like Duck Quacky. I know I’m like the only person who shares the lists of games they play but I write these every year because I will genuinely forget everything I played if I don’t, and I figure it’s just a fun extra thing to share at the end of the year. Please don’t judge my monetary decisions too much. I swear I’m feeding my family too! You gotta believe me!
As for this year? I’m hoping to spend less on games in 2023, which seems to be an impossible goal for me. It would be easier if games stopped going on sale for so cheap all the time. Maybe I need to get an even more expensive hobby so I can’t afford to buy anything for it (ha). But also there are a lot of games I own that I’m planning on playing this year. Obviously I want to continue chipping through my steam and itchio games. I want to continue my playthroughs of all mainline Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Dragon Quest, and Tales of games. But there’s some new stuff I also have my mind on this year. Classic Megaman, God of War, I’d like to make some time to play Enchanted Arms and Legend of Kay. And in general I’d like to play a lot more BIG games if possible. Games with bigger stories that are larger RPGs. I played a lot of RPGs this year but a lot of them were smaller or older. I’d like to play some meater RPGs this year.
That’s that for this year, here’s to another wonderful year full of video games and good times and money for everyone! Happy New Years and stay safe, y’all!
