Tag Game: 9 Favorite Characters
I was tagged by @anyboli, @asha-mage, and @spectrum-color (Stop! stop! I’m already tagged!)
Aladdin (Disney’s Aladdin)
Tumblr media
This is definitely where my love of the rogue-with-a-heart-of-gold archetype started. Lay the blame squarely at his bare feet. I watched all the sequels including the direct-to-VHS Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
2. Mat Cauthon (the Wheel of Time series)
Tumblr media
He’s 12 different literary/historical/mythological references slapped together, chained to a lovable rogue archetype, rolled in accessories, doused in foreshadowing, and given #vampireproblems. He probably has ADHD and dyslexia and definitely has anxiety. I’m obsessed with him and I have the essays to prove it.
3. Fortuona Athaem Devi Paendrag (the Wheel of Time series)
Tumblr media
Liking Mat is the gateway drug to liking Tuon, at least in my case. She’s so fucking weird and mysterious and infuriating and I really wanted to understand her and her role in the story. Then I wanted to figure out how to fix her. Now I still want all that but also I want to make her worse, make her make other people worse, and just generally Put Her In Situations. She is endlessly fascinating to me and I want to chew on her until I rip out her squeaker. Then I will put in another squeaker and the process will begin again. My username, originally chosen because somebody else snagged matrimonycauthon, has very appropriately become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
4. Ael i'Mhessian t'Rllalielu (the Rihannsu series)
Tumblr media
No one should be surprised that I love Diane Duane’s take on the Romulans, and Ael is the archetypal honorable Romulan type that Star Trek originally introduced. As the aunt of the Romulan Commander in the Enterprise Incident (the Federation steals technology from the Romulans) she has good reasons to hate Captain Kirk and the Federation personally- but as the tagline says, when there is no help from her friends, she turns to her enemies. She’s the star of the Rihannsu Star Trek novels: start with either My Enemy, My Ally for the first book or the omnibus Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages.
5. Tertius Lydgate (Middlemarch)
Tumblr media
I was trying to sum up what I like about him and I think it’s something about the quiet tragedy of good intentions and ambition getting banally corrupted by unquestioned systems, practical considerations, and bad but personally inevitable choices. If you’ve ever worked in nonprofits or a b-corp, you may recognize yourself in Lydgate in a way that will make you uncomfortable. Or maybe it’s just me? Anyway, go read Middlemarch. It is always the right time in your life to read Middlemarch.
6. Tau-Indi Bosoka (The Masquerade series)
Tumblr media
I’m love them! Tau-Indi is such a sweet person, and they follow a favorite character arc of mine: characters whose assigned or chosen role is to be the best representative & highest expression of their specific ethical and political milieu, and then they experience or learn something that forever disqualifies them from their former role, and then they have to keep on existing and build their sense of morality and place in the world from the ground up, on firmer foundations than the ones they started with. Also an excellent foil to Baru.
7. Miriam Beckstein (the Merchant Princes series)
Tumblr media
Merchant Princes is basically an isekai story where a biotech journalist finds out she’s a long-lost heir to a group of alternate-universe-teleporting refugees. It’s not actually very fun for her at first, but she’s making it work. I love competence porn and she definitely delivers, and there’s also a very sweet slow-burn romance tied up with her funding and leading the socialist revolution of yet another alternate universe.
8. Glimmer (new She-Ra)
Tumblr media
Glimmer? She’s just my bisexual teleporting deeply morally questionable power fantasy, it’s not that deep. Also she’s hot and I love her hair.
9. Mark Pierre Vorkosigan (Vorkosigan series)
Tumblr media
What an incredible foil! Every time I read him I’m so impressed by how fucked up he is and how hard he’s working to figure out who he is and develop in a direction he chooses. Control issues, daddy issues, sexuality issues, identity issues… he’s an entire wall of magazines and I think he’s just great.
Tagging: @unmarkedcards @veliseraptor @ameliarating @gunkreads @liesmyth and anyone else who wants to do it

Some onomastics idk
Had an idea of making an onomasticon made from the most frequent letters in English
Those would be EAOITNSHR
But I thought, "Hey, that's not much of a variation is it?"
So I looked up the most frequent bigrams and trigrams in English, extending the whole thing to this: The And Tha Ent Ing Ion Tio For Nde Has Nce Edt Tis Oft Sth Men Th He In Er An Re Nd At On Nt Ha Es St En Ed To It Ou Ea Hi Is Or Ti As Te Et Ng Of Al De Se Le Sa Si Ar Ve Ra Id Ur T N S H R E A O I
Then I thought "Why not make a list of all possible bigraphemic names? So to GenWord I went and with some magic I did the thing*
So here are all possible "names" consisting of maximum two graphemes shown above:
Ade Ah Aha Ahas Ahe Ahi Al Ale Alh Alhas Almen Aln Alnd Alng Alnt Alr Als Alst Alsth Alt Alth Altis Amen An Ance And Ande Andh Andhas Andmen Andn Andnd Andng Andnt Andr Ands Andst Andsth Andt Andth Andtis Ang Anh Anhas Anmen Ann Annd Anng Annt Anr Ans Anst Ansth Ant Anth Antis Ar Ara Are Arh Arhas Armen Arn Arnd Arng Arnt Arr Ars Arst Arsth Art Arth Artis As Asa Ase Ash Ashas Asi Asmen Asn Asnd Asng Asnt Asr Ass Asst Assth Ast Asth Astis At Ate Ath Atha Athas Athe Ati Atio Atis Atmen Atn Atnd Atng Atnt Ato Atr Ats Atst Atsth Att Atth Attis Ave De Eade Eah Eaha Eahas Eahe Eahi Eale Eamen Ean Eance Eand Eande Eang Eant Ear Eara Eare Eas Easa Ease Easi East Easth Eat Eate Eath Eatha Eathe Eati Eatio Eatis Eato Eave Ed Ede Edh Edhas Edmen Edn Ednd Edng Ednt Edr Eds Edst Edsth Edt Edth Edthas Edtis Edtmen Edtn Edtnd Edtng Edtnt Edtr Edts Edtst Edtsth Edtt Edtth Edttis Eh Eha Ehas Ehe Ehi Ele Emen En Ence End Ende Eng Enh Enhas Enmen Enn Ennd Enng Ennt Enr Ens Enst Ensth Ent Enth Enthas Entis Entmen Entn Entnd Entng Entnt Entr Ents Entst Entsth Entt Entth Enttis Er Era Ere Erh Erhas Ermen Ern Ernd Erng Ernt Err Ers Erst Ersth Ert Erth Ertis Es Esa Ese Esh Eshas Esi Esmen Esn Esnd Esng Esnt Esr Ess Esst Essth Est Esth Estis Et Ete Eth Etha Ethas Ethe Eti Etio Etis Etmen Etn Etnd Etng Etnt Eto Etr Ets Etst Etsth Ett Etth Ettis Eve Ha Hasa Hase Hasea Hasi Haso Hasou He Hea Hi Ho Hou Id Ide Idh Idhas Idmen Idn Idnd Idng Idnt Idr Ids Idst Idsth Idt Idth Idtis Ih Iha Ihas Ihe Ihi Ile Imen In Ince Ind Inde Ing Ingh Inghas Ingmen Ingn Ingnd Ingng Ingnt Ingr Ings Ingst Ingsth Ingt Ingth Ingtis Inh Inhas Inmen Inn Innd Inng Innt Inr Ins Inst Insth Int Inth Intis Ion Ionh Ionhas Ionmen Ionn Ionnd Ionng Ionnt Ionr Ions Ionst Ionsth Iont Ionth Iontis Ir Ira Ire Is Isa Ise Ish Ishas Isi Ismen Isn Isnd Isng Isnt Isr Iss Isst Issth Ist Isth Istis It Ite Ith Itha Ithas Ithe Iti Itio Itis Itmen Itn Itnd Itng Itnt Ito Itr Its Itst Itsth Itt Itth Ittis Ive Le Mena Mene Menea Meni Meno Menou Na Nce Nda Nde Ndea Ndi Ndo Ndou Ne Nea Nga Nge Ngea Ngi Ngo Ngou Ni No Nou Nta Nte Ntea Nti Nto Ntou Ode Of Ofh Ofhas Ofmen Ofn Ofnd Ofng Ofnt Ofr Ofs Ofst Ofsth Oft Ofth Ofthas Oftis Oftmen Oftn Oftnd Oftng Oftnt Oftr Ofts Oftst Oftsth Oftt Oftth Ofttis Oh Oha Ohas Ohe Ohi Ole Omen On Once Ond Onde Ong Onh Onhas Onmen Onn Onnd Onng Onnt Onr Ons Onst Onsth Ont Onth Ontis Or Ora Ore Orh Orhas Ormen Orn Ornd Orng Ornt Orr Ors Orst Orsth Ort Orth Ortis Os Osa Ose Osi Ost Osth Ot Ote Oth Otha Othe Oti Otio Otis Oto Oude Ouh Ouha Ouhas Ouhe Ouhi Oule Oumen Oun Ounce Ound Ounde Oung Ount Our Oura Oure Ous Ousa Ouse Ousi Oust Ousth Out Oute Outh Outha Outhe Outi Outio Outis Outo Ouve Ove Ra Re Rea Ri Ro Rou Sa Se Sea Si So Sou Sta Ste Stea Stha Sthe Sthea Sthi Stho Sthou Sti Sto Stou Ta Te Tea Tha The Thea Thi Tho Thou Ti Tio Tisa Tise Tisea Tisi Tiso Tisou To Tou Ur Urh Urhas Urmen Urn Urnd Urng Urnt Urr Urs Urst Ursth Urt Urth Urtis Ve

I read Daniel Warren Johnson’s Beta Ray Bill #1 and for the most part it was good. I liked that DWJ fixed that continuity error in Cates’ Thor regarding Bill. As always I love DWJ’s art and the fact that even if it's very distinctive to Walt Simonson’s it still has that feel similar to Simonson’s (the epicness, the big giant creative comic sound effects). I like that this is touching on Bill’s past. Fing Fang Foom was a nice touch although the Horse jokes got tiresome (and another fricking King in Black crossover).
The rest I’m kind of iffy about but it’s not entirely a deal breaker.
Like Bill being jealous of Thor because of how he’s in his shadow and how Thor gets all the glory while Bill does all the work doesn’t really feel like something Bill would think about Thor. I mean Bill came in and beat the crap out of Thor the first time they met, he was worthy of Mjolnir, and he even won against Thor in a contest to see who was worthy of Mjolnir. The whole reason he got Stormbreaker was so he wouldn’t take Mjolnir from Thor.
Most of the Aaron arc Bill gets to see Thor at his lowest, without being worthy of Mjolnir and not even being able to use his own name. Bill even offers Stormbreaker to Thor but Thor refuses because he knows how important Stormbreaker is to him. Also the Asgardians always recognized Bill for his valor and Odin told Bill that he saw him as a son. Hell, I think even Thor left Bill in charge of Asgard at one point in what was basically the All-Father position.
The only way I can make sense of Bill being like this is him feeling insecure about not having Stormbreaker anymore and all the crap Cates has put him through probably has him depressed. The way Thor has been behaving towards him doesn’t help either.
Now lets talk about Sif and Bill.
I always loved Sif and Bill’s relationship, at the time Thor was being messed with by Amora’s sister Lorelei and him and Sif were on the outs. In comes Bill and he reminds Sif of all of Thor’s good qualities. Bill tells Sif of his woes about how he lost his humanity and doesn’t think he will ever go back home even after saving his people because he feels like a monster. Sif reaches for his hand but Bill takes it away. But at this point she’s already taking a liking to him and this is before she knows he can turn into a regular Korbinite.
Throughout the Walt Simonson run there was a lot of heavily implied stuff between her and Bill. Mostly both of them waxing poetic at each other and having romantic drama. You never see them kiss, but you see them hug and touch and hold hands. They spend a lot of time together.
I think it’s this moment that really drives home that Sif and Bill are a couple and their relationship is much more intimate.
Tumblr media
During their last moments close Sif gets dramatic about having to leave him.
Tumblr media
But yeah you cannot convince me that they didn’t have any form of intimacy.
That said Sif spends time with Bill in his modified Korbinite form and in his regular humanoid Korbinite form and she shows attraction to him in both forms.
In Kelly Sue Decconick’s Sif #1 Sif meets Bill’s then partner Ti Asha Ra and there’s awkwardness.
Tumblr media
I think the most obvious example is in Kathryn Immonen’s Journey Into Mystery where Bill doesn’t change into his humanoid Korbinite form at all and remains in his cybernetic and enhanced form for the entire duration of that arc.
Just look at Sif during this moment
Tumblr media
Yeah that memory probably involved something naughty.
Tumblr media
You get the idea. She’s attracted to Bill no matter his form.
So in DWJ’s comcic we have Sif dragging Bill to a room and then this happens.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s not so much that Sif refused him, that’s fine, but the fact that she intended to have sex with him but only if he was in his humanoid Korbinite form. I don’t see Sif ever doing that to Bill especially knowing how self-conscious and tortured he is about his looks. He makes it clear the first time they meet.
Tumblr media
If Sif wasn’t attracted to this Bill and only his humanoid Korbinite form then I don’t think she would ever try to take him to a room with the intention of having sex with him only in his humanoid form. I just don’t see Sif ever doing something like that to him, knowing Bill hates his monstrous form and has trouble finding acceptance in it.
But still this wasn’t the part of the story that bothered me, this was:
Tumblr media
I really hated how Thor acted in this, specifically the “I am who I am!” answer after Bill confronted him about getting all the glory. Where did all of Thor’s humility went? It’s not like that’s a major arc for his character why Odin turned him into Donald Blake (and that’s another rant for another day, Don I mean, not the character but what they have done to him and Thor). It sucks but I haven’t really enjoyed a Thor comic since Aaron’s God Butcher arc and I miss Thor when he wasn’t portrayed as a dumb goof or an angry Viking jerk. Give me that regal Kirby and Shakespearian like poetic Thor who occasionally could be an ass but is not devoid of accepting when he was wrong and being empathic towards his friends. The Thor who recited the last rites to a Catholic Priest in the Priest’s religion. TheThor who would be terribly upset if he ever heard Bill say this to him and would want to hear his friend out and do anything to repair their relationship.
Anyway despite that stuff I am still on board for issue 2 and I will refrain from heavily judging this until I’ve read the whole thing.

“We were tied down in the impeachment trial ...."
Senator Mitch McConnell recently suggested Trump's response to the coronavirus outbreak was because it "came up while we were tied down in the impeachment trial," and "it diverted the attention of the government because everything every day was all about impeachment."
Hmmm, I thought -- really?  It prompted me to go to a number of sources, including the President's official calendar, to create a timeline.  It is below, and one must ask:
Can anyone say objectively, and with a straight face, that "everything every day was all about impeachment" during the January 16 through February 5 impeachment trial?
(Some hints .... during that time frame Trump said "we have it totally under control" and that "we're working with [China] very closely" regarding the virus; during the trial, Trump golfed in Florida, four times; during the trial, Trump held two out-of-state campaign rallies.)
And, in addition to that short time period of time, let's also look at Trump's post-impeachment statements and responses in comparison to those of public health officials/organizations, and how he has -- it appears -- finally come to understand that he can no longer downplay this.
(** Total number of US cases is shown periodically, in parentheses, after the date)
TIMELINE
December 31 -- China confirms that health authorities are treating dozens of coronavirus cases
January 3 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Miami, FL)
January 9 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Toledo, OH)
January 11 -- First coronavirus death reported in China.
January 14 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Milwaukee, WI)
January 16 -- Impeachment Trial Began
January 18 -- Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL.
January 19 -- Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL.
January 21 -- First reported case of coronavirus in the United States, in Washington state.
January 22 -- Trump statement, after being asked whether he was worried about a pandemic: “No, we’re not at all. And we have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China.”
January 24 -- (1) -- Senate Health Committee briefed on the coronavirus. Trump Tweets: "China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!.”
January 28 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Wildwood, NJ).  No mention of coronavirus.
January 29 -- Trump signed the USMCA. 195 State Department employees from Wuhan, China, along with their families and other U.S. citizens, are evacuated to March Air Reserve Base near Riverside, California. They are kept under quarantine for 14 days, although none had been infected. Trump statement: “Just received a briefing on the Coronavirus in China from all of our GREAT agencies, who are also working closely with China. We will continue to monitor the ongoing developments. We have the best experts anywhere in the world, and they are on top of it 24/7!”
January 30 --  Trump Campaign Rally (Des Moines, IA). During the rally he said: "In fact, maybe, we've never had a better relationship [with China] and we're working with them very closely on the coronavirus. We're working with them very, very closely. We only have five people, hopefully, everything's going to be great. They have somewhat of a problem, but hopefully, it's all going to be great. But we're working with China, just so you know, and other countries very, very closely."  The first case of person-to-person transmission is confirmed in Chicago, Illinois, between a married couple, after the wife returned from China.  Trump statement: “We think we have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five. And those people are all recuperating successfully. But we’re working very closely with China and other countries, and we think it’s going to have a very good ending for it. So that I can assure you.”  The World Health Organization (WHO) names the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The head of the WHO stated: “The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries.”
January 31 -- (6) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency and imposing a mandatory 14-day quarantine for any U.S. citizens who has visited Hubei Province within the preceding two weeks.
February 1 -- Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL
February 2 -- Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL. Trump statement: “Well, we pretty much shut it down coming in from China. … We can’t have thousands of people coming in who may have this problem, the coronavirus. So we’re gonna see what happens, but we did shut it down, yes.”
February 4 -- Senate Intelligence Committee briefed on the coronavirus. Trump delivers State of the Union Address, and states regarding coronavirus: "We are coordinating with the Chinese government and working closely together on the coronavirus outbreak in China. My administration will take all necessary steps to safeguard our citizens from this threat."
February 5 -- (11) -- Impeachment Trial Ended
February 7 -- Trump Tweet: "“Nothing is easy, but [Chinese President Xi Jinping] … will be successful, especially as the weather starts to warm & the virus hopefully becomes weaker, and then gone.”
February 10 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Manchester, NH).  During the rally, he said: "Last month, we signed a groundbreaking trade agreement with China that will defeat so many of our opponents. The money that's pouring in, people don't even believe it. And by the way, the virus, they're working hard. Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that's true. But we're doing great in our country. China, I spoke with President Xi, and they're working very, very hard. And I think it's going to all work out fine. Rough stuff, I tell you, rough, rough stuff.  But I think it's going to work out good. We only have 11 cases, and they're all getting better."
February 12 -- The Executive Director of the Bipartisan Commission on Biodefense, Asha M. George, said travel restrictions came too late, and that “Travel restrictions are not going to remain the sole way to try and control all of this.”
February 13 -- Dr. Robert Redfield, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stated on CNN: "This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year.”
February 14 -- Trump statement: “We have a very small number of people in the country, right now, with it. It’s like around 12. Many of them are getting better. Some are fully recovered already. So we’re in very good shape.”  Trump statement: "“There’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm — historically, that has been able to kill the virus.” (In early March the head of the WHO said: "“We have no reason to believe that this virus would behave differently in different temperatures, which is why we want aggressive action in all countries to make sure that we prevent onward transmission, and that it’s taken seriously in every country. But this is something that will be of interest.”
February 15 -- (15) -- Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL
February 19 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Phoenix, AZ).  No mention of coronavirus.  Trump statement: “I think it’s going to work out fine. I think when we get into April, in the warmer weather, that has a very negative effect on that and that type of a virus. So let’s see what happens, but I think it’s going to work out fine.”
February 20 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Colorado Springs, CO).  No mention of coronavirus.
February 21 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Las Vegas, NV).  No mention of coronavirus.
February 24 -- (35) -- Trump Tweet: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”
February 25 -- Trump statement: “You may ask about the coronavirus, which is very well under control in our country. We have very few people with it, and the people that have it are … getting better. They’re all getting better. … As far as what we’re doing with the new virus, I think that we’re doing a great job.”  Trump statement: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus, including the very early closing of our borders to certain areas of the world.”
February 26 -- Trump statement: “Because of all we’ve done, the risk to the American people remains very low. … When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero. That’s a pretty good job we’ve done." Trump statement, when asked about expectations that the virus will spread and if it worries him: "It may. It may. ... No. ... No, because we’re ready for it. It is what it is. We’re ready for it. We’re really prepared. ... We hope it doesn’t spread. There’s a chance that it won’t spread too, and there’s a chance that it will, and then it’s a question of at what level." Trump statement, at a news conference: "We’re going down, not up. We’re going very substantially down, not up.... As they get better, we take them off the list, so that we’re going to be pretty soon at only five people. And we could be at just one or two people over the next short period of time.” At the same news conference: 1) Alex Azar, Secretary of Health and Human Services, said “We can expect to see more cases in the United States.” Dr. Anne Schuchat, the Principal Deputy Director of the CDC, said “We do expect more cases, and this is a good time to prepare.”  The same day, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the Director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the virus would continue to spread. “It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness.”
February 27 -- (59) -- Trump statement: "It’s going to disappear. One day — it’s like a miracle — it will disappear. And from our shores, we — you know, it could get worse before it gets better. It could maybe go away. We’ll see what happens. Nobody really knows.” Trump statement: “Only a very small number in U.S., & China numbers look to be going down. All countries working well together!”
February 28 -- Trump Campaign Rally (Charleston, NC).  During the rally he said: "But with your help we have exposed the far left's corruption and defeated their sinister schemes and let's see what happens in the coming months. Let's watch. Let's just watch. Very dishonest people. Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. You know that, right? Coronavirus. They're politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs, you say, 'How's President Trump doing?, 'Oh, nothing, nothing.' They have no clue, they don't have any clue." And: "They tried anything, they tried it over and over, they've been doing it since she got in. It's all turning, they lost. It's all turning, think of it, think of it. And this is their new hoax. But you know we did something that's been pretty amazing. We have 15 people in this massive country and because of the fact that we went early, we went early, we could have had a lot more than that." And: "So a number that nobody heard of that I heard of recently, and I was shocked to hear, 35,000 people on average die each year from the flu. Did anyone know that? Thirty-five thousand, that's a lot of people. It could go to a hundred thousand. It could be 20,000. They say usually a minimum of 27, goes up to 100,000 people a year die, and so far we have lost nobody to coronavirus in the United States. Nobody. And it doesn't mean we won't and we are totally prepared. It doesn't mean we won't. But think of it, you hear 35 and 40,000 people and we've lost nobody. You wonder if the press is in hysteria mode. CNN, fake news and the camera just went off. The camera just went off. Turn it back on." And: "I ordered the suspension of foreign nationals, who have recently been in China from entering the United States. An action which the Democrats loudly criticized and protested, and now everybody's complimenting me, saying, 'Thank you very much. You are 100% correct.' Could have been a whole different story. But I say, 'So let's get this right. A virus starts in China, bleeds its way into various countries all around the world. Doesn't spread widely at all in the United States because of the early actions that myself and my administration took against a lot of other wishes."  And: "It's a big thing, a virus Task Force, I requested $2.5 billion to ensure we have the resources we need. The Democrats said, 'That's terrible. he's doing the wrong thing. He needs eight and a half billion, not two and a half.' I've never had that before. Yes for two and a half, they want to give me eight and a half, so I said I'll take it. Does that make me bad? I'll take it. I'll take it. I've never had that before. I never had it. We won two and a half million. That's plenty. 'We demand you take eight and a half. He doesn't know what he's doing. We want eight and half.' These people are crazy. We must understand that border security is also health security. And you've all seen the wall has gone up like magic." And: "The Democrat policy of open borders is a direct threat to the health and well-being of all Americans. Now you see it with the coronavirus, you see it. You see it with the coronavirus. You know, you see that. When you have this virus or any other virus or any other problem coming in, it's not the only thing that comes in through the border and we're setting records now at the border, we're setting records."  Trump statement: “I think it’s really going well. We did something very fortunate: we closed up to certain areas of the world very, very early — far earlier than we were supposed to. I took a lot of heat for doing it. It turned out to be the right move, and we only have 15 people and they are getting better, and hopefully they’re all better. There’s one who is quite sick, but maybe he’s gonna be fine. … We’re prepared for the worst, but we think we’re going to be very fortunate."
February 29 -- Trump statement: “We’re the number one travel destination anywhere in the world, yet we have far fewer cases of the disease than even countries with much less travel or a much smaller population.”
March 2 -- (62) -- Trump Campaign Rally (Charlotte, NC). At rally he says: "My administration has also taken the most aggressive action in modern history to protect Americans from the coronavirus. You know about this whole thing. Horrible. Including sweeping travel restrictions." Also: "We had a great meeting today with a lot of the great companies, and they’re going to have vaccines, I think, relatively soon.” And: "Look it's a problem, we're working with other countries. Remember this, over the last long period of time, the flu, the common flu, you know this, right, from 27,000 to 70,000 people get infected and many people die. Think of it, 27,000, you lose 27,000 people to the common flu. It can be much more. One year was much higher than the 70,000 number those people die." And finally: "The United States is, right now, ranked by far No. 1 in the world for preparedness." Earlier the same day, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the Director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said a vaccine would take time: “You won’t have a vaccine,” he said, noting that a vaccine would need to be tested first. It would take, he said, “a year to a year and a half.”
March 3 -- WHO states: “Globally, about 3.4 percent of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1 percent of those infected."
March 4 -- Trump statement, responding to WHO from the day before, on Fox: "“Well, I think the 3.4 percent is really a false number. Now, and this is just my hunch, and, but based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot people will have this and it’s very mild.” He continued, “I think the number, personally, I would say the number is way under 1 percent.”  (Note: as of today, worldwide, the percentage is 4.97%; in the United States, it is 2.2%.) Trump statement: “Some people will have this at a very light level and won’t even go to a doctor or hospital, and they’ll get better. There are many people like that.”
March 5 -- (129) -- Trump Tweet: "With approximately 100,000 CoronaVirus cases worldwide, and 3,280 deaths, the United States, because of quick action on closing our borders, has, as of now, only 129 cases (40 Americans brought in) and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!" VP Pence statement: "We don’t have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward.”
March 6 -- Trump statement: "“Anybody that needs a test can have a test.”  Trump statement: “We did an interview on Fox last night, a town hall. I think it was very good. And I said: ‘Calm. You have to be calm. It’ll go away.'”
March 7 -- Trump statement, asked whether he was concerned that the virus was getting closer to the White House: "No, I’m not concerned at all. No, I’m not. No, we’ve done a great job.” Trump statement: “It came out of China, and we heard about it. And made a good move: We closed it down; we stopped it. Otherwise — the head of CDC said last night that you would have thousands of more problems if we didn’t shut it down very early. That was a very early shutdown, which is something we got right."  The same day Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL.
March 8 -- Trump retweets a story about Surgeon General Jerome Adams playing down the risk of coronavirus for Trump personally.  The same day Trump played golf at Trump Intl., West Palm Beach, FL.
March 9 -- (213) -- Trump statement: “The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant. Surgeon General, ‘The risk is low to the average American.’” Trump Tweet: "So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!”
March 10 -- Trump Tweet, regarding a border wall with Mexico: "Going up fast. We need the Wall more than ever!”  The same day, when asked at a Congressional hearing whether structural barriers at U.S. borders would mitigate the outbreak, CDC Director Redfield states: “Not that I’ve seen.”  Trump statements: “As you know, it’s about 600 cases, it’s about 26 deaths, within our country. And had we not acted quickly, that number would have been substantially more.” “And it hit the world. And we’re prepared, and we’re doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away.”
March 11 -- WHO declares coronavirus a pandemic. Trump statement: “I think we’re going to get through it very well.”
March 12 -- (987) -- Dr. Fauci testified to Congress, regarding coronavirus testing: "The system is not really geared to what we need right now, what you are asking for. That is a failing. It is a failing. Let’s admit it.”  Trump statement: “It’s going to go away. … The United States, because of what I did and what the administration did with China, we have 32 deaths at this point … when you look at the kind of numbers that you’re seeing coming out of other countries, it’s pretty amazing when you think of it.”
March 13 -- (1,300) -- At a news conference, Trump suggested that Google would handle some of the burden of making tests available: “I want to thank Google. Google is helping to develop a website. It’s going to be very quickly done, unlike websites of the past, to determine whether a test is warranted and to facilitate testing at a nearby convenient location.” Google then referred to a statement from Verily, with which Google shares a parent company, saying a tool to triage coronavirus cases was in the early stages of development. Google CEO Sundar Pichai later said its own plans were limited to creating an informational website “dedicated to COVID-19 education, prevention and local resources nationwide.” Trump also states the Food and Drug Administration “will bring, additionally, 1.4 million tests on board next week and 5 million within a month. I doubt we’ll need anywhere near that.”
March 14 -- (1,700) -- “We’re using the full power of the federal government to defeat the virus, and that’s what we’ve been doing.” Also retweeted supporter Candace Owens, who cited “good news” on the coronavirus, including that “Italy is hit hard, experts say, because they have the oldest population in Europe (average age of those that have died is 81).”
March 15 -- (1,700) -- Trump states at a news conference: “This is a very contagious virus. It’s incredible. But it’s something that we have tremendous control over.” At the same news conference, Dr. Fauci offered the opposite assessment. “The worst is, yes, ahead for us. It is how we respond to that challenge that’s going to determine what the ultimate endpoint is going to be.”
March 16 -- (1,700) -- “If you’re talking about the virus, no, that’s not under control for any place in the world. … I was talking about what we’re doing is under control, but I’m not talking about the virus.”
March 17 -- (3,500) -- Trump statements: “I’ve always known this is a real — this is a pandemic ... I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.” "We’re going to win. And I think we’re going to win faster than people think — I hope.”
March 18 -- (7,100) -- Trump statements: “I always treated the Chinese Virus very seriously, and have done a very good job from the beginning.”  "No, I’ve always viewed it as serious, there was no difference yesterday from days before. I feel the tone is similar but some people said it wasn’t.”
March 23 -- (31,600) -- Trump statements: “America will again and soon be open for business. … Parts of our country are very lightly affected.”
March 24 -- (42,200) -- Trump statements: “You’re going to lose a number of people to the flu. But you’re going to lose more people by putting a country into a massive recession or depression.” On seeking to reopen portions of the American economy by April 12, he said: “It’s such an important day for other reasons, but I’ll make it an important day for this, too. … I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter.”
March 25 -- (51,900) -- Trump statements: “There are large sections of our country — probably can go back to work much sooner than other sections. … It’s hard not to be happy with the job we’re doing, that I can tell you."
March 26 -- (63,600) -- Trump statements: “They have to go back to work; our country has to go back. Our country is based on that, and I think it’s going to happen pretty quickly.” “I have a feeling that a lot of numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be. I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators.”
March 29 -- (103,300) -- Trump statements: “So you’re talking about [worst-case scenarios of] 2.2 million deaths, 2.2 million people from this. And so if we could hold that down, as we’re saying, to 100,000 — it’s a horrible number, maybe even less — but to 100,000. So we have between 100 and 200,000, and we altogether have done a very good job." And, despite having it “totally under control” during the impeachment trial, today he said: “Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won.”
March 30 -- (122,700) -- Trump statements: “New York is really in trouble, but I think it’s going to end up being fine. We’re loading it up, we’re stocking it up. … And then by a little short of June, maybe June 1, we think the — you know, it’s a terrible thing to say, but — we think the deaths will be at a very low number. It’ll be brought down to a very low number from right now, from where it’s getting to reach its peak.”  Also: “We’re going to have a great victory.”
March 31 -- (140,600) -- Trump statements: “Our country is in the midst of a great national trial, unlike any we have ever faced before. You all see it. You see it probably better than most. We’re at war with a deadly virus. Success in this fight will require the full absolute measure of our collective strength, love, and devotion. It’s very important. Each of us has the power through our own choices and actions to save American lives and rescue the most vulnerable among us. That’s why we really have to do what we all know is right. Every citizen is being called upon to make sacrifices. Every business is being asked to fulfill its patriotic duty. Every community is making fundamental changes to how we live, work and interact each and every day, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this going on long into the future when this virus is gone and defeated.” Also: “I know our citizens will rise to the occasion and they already have sacrificed a lot. We had the greatest economy in the history of our country. We’re the greatest economy in the world. We had the best unemployment numbers and employment numbers that we’ve ever had by far, and in one instant we said we have no choice but to close it up. Just as Americans have always done, they will do a job like few have seen before and they’re proud to do it. And I see that there’s a great pride going on right now.”
