I've seen a lot of discourse about Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series, and I'd like to say that I loved her. Don't get me wrong. I love Sally from the original book series, and I, too, would fight the God of War on her behalf. But something that I enjoyed about Virginia's portrayal of Sally that we don't get in the books is the character depth. We don't hear much of Sally's backstory in the TV series, apart from a couple of flashbacks with younger Percy and that scene with Poseidon (Toby Stephens). However, those scenes do an excellent job of showing us that alongside being Percy's mother, Sally is also a young woman who fell in love with a man she could not be with and is enduring the natural consequences of having Percy. She struggles to communicate with him when she's frustrated, gets teary-eyed when she lies to him to prolong the inevitable, and actively sacrifices her happiness to ensure his safety. Virginia Kull's portrayal of Sally Jackson reinforces the character's humanity, imperfections, and determination, and it's everything to me.

#who needs a mommy when you got a tommy #the first time shes does this its preschool teacher maria’s idea #shes four and mothers day is coming up and its usually a hard time for her so joel lets maria know just in case she has any behavioral issue #miss maria is like 🫡 i gotchu #she makes sure to emphasize to the kids that families are all different #they spend every day of may leading up to mother day reading books exploring diversity in families and talking about what mom really means #that it doesnt have to be the person who had you in their tummy or a girl or even a person we call mom #for example miss maria’s real mommy wasnt so nice growing up so miss marias TRUE mommy is just her daddy and her auntie rose #because those are the people that loved her no matter what and kept her safe and taken care of and fed #thats all mom is #it just means someone thats there for you every day and loves you and cares for you #someone who is one of your favorite people and who would say the same about you #all the kids go around and say who they think are their moms #mosy say some iteration of ‘mommy’ and ‘mama’ or ‘grammy’#but then baby ellie says ‘tess and auntie marlene’#and baby sarah says ‘uncle thommy’#one of the other littles says ‘daddy and miss maria’ 😭#and they all make heart cards for their mommy firgures #they cant write or really read anything but a few letters yet #(even though hyperlexic baby sarah does have pretty incredible letter recognition for her age)#so they tell miss maria what to write on their cards and then decorate with oil pastels #sarah’s says dear uncle tommy thank you for being my mommy you are so funny and i love when we play horsey and princesses. happy mommy day #when he picks her up at the end of the day shes like HI MOMMMMM all giggly and hes like ????? hi???? whats this???? I am often thinking how Shmi Skywalker, a woman who's legally the property of a bug, opens her home (which she doesn't even own due to she herself is owned by a bug) to two stranded Jedi and the queen of an entire planet and helps them get on their feet and back to safety and lets them gamble on her child and neither the Jedi order nor the planet whose queen was saved bothered to think "hey maybe we should go buy her freedom and set her up in a nice apartment somewhere." This has bothered me since childhood along with the fact that Yoda and Yaddle did not fuck.

Saying that non-conforming female characters don't face as much misogyny as their "feminine" counterparts is so funny cause literally the misogyny in their treatment is more overt because they aren't staying "in their place" like men think they should. The disdain for women + misogynistic societal ideals are so much more blatant in male characters interacting with these women. Countless times they are, in essence, told they need to sit down, shut up, and know their place but somehow that translates into them having "masculine privilege". I can only assume that people with this take haven't actually read the books and only get their information from second-hand sources.
