smurfs 2021 review episode: DRIIINNGGGGG

It took me two years to remember but now I will finish my reviews.

-Honestly I just love this chapter because it reminds me of the Smurf Me No Flowers chapter

-When I saw this chapter in French I believed that they were doing some kind of contest of who is the cleanest because there is a bathtub and they are with someone brilliant.

But after seeing it for the fourth time I think they bathed Sloppy Smurf, I forgot he existed.

-why the alarm clock 3000 keeps ringing, why it does not turns off during the night, is it supposed to sleep there?

-lazy is so happy because apparently he had never seen a sunrise because he was asleep and I love how happy lazy is in this episode.

-I like that both the dining room and the fire station are now two merged houses.

-this expression looks like tom and jerry

-the lazy from the original series seems more like someone who loves to sleep, but this lazy seems to suffer from narcolepsy and is enjoying his first day without falling asleep involuntarily (I know that narcoleptcia doesn't work like that but you understand).

-help brainy it's halloween there are so many things that could kill me :c

-the kiss!!!

-d-d-d-do you want me to go there? To the exterior? In the middle of halloween?

-I don't know about you, but after brainy made scaredy touch a bear's nose I wouldn't trust him again

-That rainbow looks like the magic of friendship.

-Gargamel is supposed to hate smurfs, but he has smurf pajamas, smurf toys, and he dressed up as a smurf for halloween XD

-on top of that he dressed up as a brainy XD

-I love how the Smurfs find the robot trying to get into Scaredy's house and they think oh no, he's going to kill Scaredy, or failing that, he's going to traumatize him again.

-I actually really like this episode, not as much as the last one but it was funny.

-But I don't like the way they're treating Scaredy. I mean he's supposed to learn not to be afraid of halloween but, they just traumatized the baby. Don't torture him, where is the therapist smurf from the third movie?

-Moral: Don't try to hide Halloween because you're going to end up traumatized anyway.

- I like the 80's Papa Smurf than the current one

Why:

- He's so busy nowadays

- His little smurfs are getting Independent or just not asking him for help

- He doesn't spend that much time anymore with his Smurfs and Baby

- He's easily agitated by the others than before, well who wouldn't be; after all he looks out for more than a hundred smurfs

- We don't see him lending smurfy advice as often

- He just seem different, I can't put my mind into it. He just seems off to me.

- I love Papa Smurf really I do, I just missed the sweet and wise Papa Smurf

Everyone who grew up with Saturday-morning cartoon television in the 1980s or 1990s is surely familiar with the universe of the Smurfs. During many years of adventures, however, the diet of the little blue creatures remained somewhat of a mystery. 

The principal ingredient of many of their dishes was “Smurf berries,” which grew on bushes, but the indistinct appearance of the bushes gave few clues about their botanical nature. This was a deliberate move of the Smurfs’ creator, Belgian cartoonist Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928–1992). When the Smurfs were still only a European phenomenon, the Smurf berries were referred to by the French name salsepareille. Peyo chose this name for its exotic sound, initially being unaware that the name referred to very real plants. The name sarsaparilla or salsaparilla, as the plant is known in English, had been used for various species of the genus Smilax for centuries.

When the Smurfs became a phenomenon in the United States, the sarsaparilla shrub lost its berries, because many American viewers were thought to be familiar with sarsaparilla as a real plant. Smilax species are typically climbing vines (not Smurf shrubs) that can be woody, prickly, or both. They appear in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. The fact that an American audience might sooner recognize sarsaparilla than a European audience has everything to do with the plant’s history, which mainly revolves around Smilax species like S. aristolochiifolia and S. ornata, from Mexico and Central America. The best-known episodes from sarsaparilla’s history -- first as a medicine and later as a tonic drink -- are indeed about species from the New World.

The introduction of the Smurfs in the United States signified, in fact, sarsaparilla’s second Atlantic crossing. The oldest references to sarsaparilla are from Old World antiquity, where Smilax aspera was used as an antidote for poisons. The Roman medical writer Dioscorides (first century CE) devoted a chapter to this plant [...]. This description survived many centuries and became firmly embedded in the European medical tradition. [...] When European naturalists explored the plants of the New World in the sixteenth century, they tended to relate new species to better-known plants whenever they could. [...] Nicolás Monardes (1493–1588) described different kinds of American sarsaparilla in his work Historia medicinal de las cosas que se traen de nuestras Indias Occidentales (1565). His descriptions carried a commercial touch. For instance, he tried to convince his readers that the whitish sarsaparilla from Honduras was better than the black variety from Mexico. Similarly, he aimed to embed the new American kinds of sarsaparilla in the traditional framework of European medicine. [...]

The old name sarsaparilla began to be associated not only with new Smilax species from different geographical regions, but also with new diseases. American sarsaparilla was not used as an antidote in cases of poisoning by venomous animals, but to cure syphilis. Syphilis had swept Europe [...], and the market for syphilis remedies was booming. Yet a range of botanical substances had to compete with preparations that contained mercury. The most famous botanical antisyphilitics were of exotic origin: guaiacum wood, China root, sarsaparilla root, and sassafras wood. All these plant parts became staple drugs in European pharmacies [...].

Sarsaparilla [...] was also valued as a flavoring ingredient in medicinal tonic drinks, often along with sassafras. As such, sarsaparilla was to enjoy another wave of popularity in a later age. [...] As a medical commodity, sarsaparilla enjoyed great commercial success early on. Between 1568 and 1619 alone, 670 tons of sarsaparilla were imported in Seville, Spain, equivalent to some 7.5 million doses. [...]

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the borders between medicinal and other uses of sarsaparilla blurred. Proprietary remedies with sarsaparilla abounded, with the Ayer and Hood companies from Lowell, Massachusetts, turning the production of sarsaparilla into big business. In advertisements, it was usually promoted as a tonic, to purify the blood, and to create appetite. Because it was of American origin, it was supposedly especially suitable for American patients.

By this time, then, sarsaparilla had lost many of the Old World medical and cultural connotations [...]. The divide became so pronounced that European fans of the Smurfs in the twentieth century were no longer expected to recognize the name of a plant that had been a mainstay of pharmaceutical practice there for centuries, while the name sarsaparilla lived on as a soft drink in the United States.

“No,” he said gruffly, eyes hidden behind shades. It wasn’t his idea in the first place. If your boyfriend had it his way, none of his family would know about Kai.

Sleeping sounding in her blue and white striped blanket, you carefully took her seat out of the car. Unexpected, yes. A mistake, no. Never. How could something so beautiful, so perfect, ever be considered a mistake?

Taking her carrier from him, he opened the gate to his grandmother’s house with the other, letting you walk in first before him. Lips firm in a tight line, he didn't know what more he could say. It was hours of conversation that carried into the night about whether or not the rest of the Cody’s needed to know the family had increased by one. He wasn’t ashamed, never could be of something so miraculous, her tiny nose that you swore was a perfect match to his sending him into tears the first time he laid eyes on it. On her. His daughter. Never did he think he would be saying that by 21, but things happen for a reason. 

He had been adamant about protecting you from the moment he’d fallen in the love, and even more adamant about protecting Kia the moment she was born. And that’s why he had very strong opinions on bringing her over.

Very aware of the Cody’s reputation, someone who had very little living family left to rely on, you weren’t one to willingly take that away from her. If Kai even had one more person in her corner besides yourself and J, you considered that a win in her book. In the end, like everything else, you had convinced J that this was the best with a little help from your very convincing lips.

“Oh, baby, your home. We just put dinner out.” Smurf’s greeting was sweet, sickly sweet J thought. His knuckles white, grip tight, on the car seat carrier. Of course, she was being overly welcoming, she always was but he hadn’t been around for months, haven’t seen his family for months as he tried to disassociate. They were all bound for a surprise. 

“What’d you got there baby?”

“Is that a literal baby?” Craig’s voice came as he popped the top off his beer.

“Why does J have a baby?” Pope’s comment was devoid of any emotion or shock, just curious as everyone crowded around the kitchen. 

Smurf remained silent, eyes narrowed and falling not onto her great-granddaughter, but onto you. 

“Well, who’s this?” The California breeze wafting into the house from the backyard is cool, sometimes a relief against the hot sun, but today is the signal of what can be described as the start of California winter. Chilly, cold, with a bite, icy and mirroring Smurf’s question.

“This is Kai. Your…” his mouth unbelievably dry, your elbow to his side edged him on to finish. “Your great-granddaughter.”

“And you didn’t tell us…” The question hung in the air, the uncles less than interested in a new Cody, she wasn’t a threat to their fortune yet, what did it matter But you swore you saw a bit of a smile grace Deran’s lips as he looked at her for a fleeting moment. 

“Well, let me get a proper look at my great grandbaby…”

You could read J like a book; all rigid and stiff, telling you, telling everyone that he wasn’t comfortable with her touching his daughter, taking an involuntary step back as she approached. A comforting hand rested on his shoulder, a curt nod sent his way to reassure him that it needed to happen and it might as well happen now. For all the murdering they did, you knew in your heart that Smurf wouldn’t hurt Kai. Blood.

J knew a different story, and watched a smile sit uncomfortably, unfamiliar on the woman’s face. J knew Smurf loved her family, and her boys, and yet she’d hated Julie, hurt her, and left her to die. He knew what smurf thought of Cody's women, and he’d be damned if she tried anything like that on his little girl, her peach fuzz already a mysterious shade of brown, darker than his and yours, a bit of his mom passed down in a way that made him hurt more. A may that made him remember his mom, mourn her again, and fight for what she deserved all those years ago. 

He now had two women to avenge. 

And it was your quick wit that had convinced him this was the best way. Even late last night, surrounded by pink and purple painted butterflies on the wall, you nursing Kai, the three of you with barely any sleep keeping you energized, you remembered something your mother said to you, something his mother said once or twice, “keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.”

She’d never be the wiser to J’s ways with a new little bundle to focus on.

“See, it’s alright. It’s working,” you whispered in his ear, doing anything you could to ease the tension you felt in his shoulders, his focus razor-sharp on his daughter in his grandmother’s greedy arms. 

“She’s safe. She’ll always be. She has you.”

Jokey has a new prank: Grouchy has a tendency to say ‘no’ to anything and everything, so he gives him a potion which has some very surprising effects. Whenever anyone asks him to do something, he says “okey dokey” and does it straight away... even if the thing they’re asking is for him to go to Gargamel’s hovel! 

AKA Smurfy Magic Duel 

Papa Smurf wants to prove to SmurfWillow AKA Willow that alchemy is more powerful than her “natural” magic. He invites her to come visit his lab for a little demonstration, which fails to impress the leader of the Smurf girls. The two wizards end up challenging each other to a magic duel. But their duel gets cut short when Papa Smurf inadvertently makes Gargamel and Azrael appear in the middle of the village! 

The Two Dimwits Make a Pair AKA Doctor Brainy & Mister Dumb 

When Brainy wants to prove that he has the heaviest brain and therefore is the most intelligent, he invents the “Smurf-scales”. Unfortunately, instead of weighing his brain, the contraption turns Brainy into a complete dummy. The village loses its brainiac smurf and gains a second Dopey/Dimwitty, which isn’t without consequences... 

Gargamel in Drool! AKA Shell Game 

Gargamel turns himself into a snail so that Farmer brings him back to the Smurf’s Village. Except once there, Gargamel is unable to turn back to his former self! Stuck as a snail, he becomes Dopey/Dimwitty’s pet and tries to find a way to escape. But as a snail, you never move too fast...
