Mini-review:

Wow, what a beautiful film. It's true that there are similar stories out there, but this one is told with such warmness and gentleness that I couldn't help but fall in love with it. If anything, my only complain is that it should have been a miniseries or something like that, cause I wanted to spend more time in this world and with these characters. But truly, this star-studded cast does one hell of a job, even the actors with less scenes or smaller roles. And the cinematography is simply stunning. The whole movie looks gorgeous, to the point of being awe-inspiring, and it has quite a few unforgettable shots. Oh, there are also a couple of triggering moments, so be careful with that. But yeah, I loved The Parades so, so much. I'll have to look up more of this director's work.

Tale of a slacker high-school girl, years behind in her studies, who decides to start working hard and pass the entrance exams to a prestigious university in Japan.

The endpoint of the story is not very surprising, but the path it takes to get there is not entirely straightforward. There's a good chance it will get you emotional and misty eyed.

It gets quite melodramatic in the second half. Which is not entirely surprising since the conflicts are set-up that way, but still.

It's also an indictment of the education system, and how difficult it is to raise a kid. The sacrifices the family has to make, and the time and effort Sayaka has to spend to reach her goal, giving up everything else.

The teacher is great. But in reality it's sadly, obviously impossible to have a teacher like that.

The Exchange Acquires ‘Shin Ultraman’ Sales Rights To Bring To Global Markets

The Exchange has acquired the sales rights for North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and other remaining territories for superhero movie “Shin Ultraman” Shin Ultraman is built on the fanbase of the Ultraman TV series that was first broadcast in 1966. The movie, directed by Shinji Higuchi, made US$31.2 million in Japan. Now that The Exchange has acquired sales rights and is introducing it to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival, Shin Ultraman may just earn more. This is especially since the movie will be brought to global markets outside of Japan. “Shin Ultraman” stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, who was in the Academy Award winning movie “Drive My Car,” Takumi Saitoh (“13 Assassins,” “Shin Godzilla”), and Masami Nagasawa (“Mother,” “Before We Vanish”). The cast also includes Daiki Arioka (“Innocent Curse”), Akari Hayami (“Forget Me Not”), and Tetsushi Tanaka (“Like Father,” “Like Son”). In the movie, the appearance of giant unidentified life forms, known as S-Class Species (Kaiju), has become commonplace in Japan. Conventional weapons have no effect on them. Having exhausted all other options, the Japanese government has issued the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol, and formed an enforcement unit, known as the SSSP. Mini-review:

I looked up Michihito Fujii's filmography right after watching The Parades, and I realized one of his movies had been in my to-watch list for a while. So here we are. Man, no one makes sad, tragic romances better than Japan. In this particular case you can tell from the beginning how it's going to end, but perhaps that makes the whole thing even more painful and heartrending. Nana Komatsu and Kentaro Sakaguchi give two of the best performances of their careers, and the rest of the star-studded cast supports them with equal grace. The cinematography is also beautiful, or maybe haunting is the appropiate word for it. In fact, I think The Last 10 Years might be one of the best films I've seen within this genre.

Political thriller about a newspaper reporter and a bureaucrat who work to unlock the truth about a government coverup.

Good core story. But the pacing is really slow. There is no sense of urgency. Especially the added personal level (like the pregnancy) slows things down considerably.

Considering where he works Sugihara's behaviour towards his superior (and in general) often felt naive.

Man those government offices were made look bleak.

Side note, while I can easily believe that the Japanese press isn't particularly investigative. I wonder how much "patriotic" control the state exerts in some situations.
