Sweet Melodies ( Part 1 ) Bada Lee Fanfic
Part 1 — Part 2
~Not proofread~
Tumblr media
Binna never thought that she would leave her home town. In fact, she never even thought that she would leave the country, but here she was. Sitting on the plane in between her mother and father as she started at a photo of her and her best friend. At the momment, she felt like crap.
She was going to miss her friends and most importantly her best friend. She had known her, her whole life, and this would be the first time that they would be apart, for a long period of time. However, that wasn’t the only reason why she was feeling like crap.
The other reason is that he didn’t even tell her friends that she was leaving. Hell, she didn’t even know she was leaving. Up untill two days ago. Apparently her parents thought it would be best to tell her last minute so she wouldn’t freak out, but that was the worst decision ever.
Her parents even told her that she wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about them leaving. The problem is, her parents were controlling and strict. They truly did love her but sometimes that took it a little overboard.
When she asked her parents why she couldn’t tell her friends. Her parents pretty much said they didn’t want anyone holding her back and ruining her future.
Her parents always suspecting that Binna’a\s best friends had feelings for her, but they neve did mention it in front of her. Another thing that everyone knew about Binna, was that she was naive about  a lot of things.  Having controlling and stict parents was the cause of that.
Her parents both came from religious families, which in return they became religious as well. They allowed Binna to choose whatever path she wanted to take when it came to religion, but that didn’t stop them from pushing thier beliefs onto her.
So when they discovered that Binna’s best friend was in love with her they was extremely against it. So to not tain her future, they decided it would be best to move the the United States. Without telling Binna, the main reason for their moving decision.
--------------------------------------
When Binna and her parents arrived in the States, Binna went into a deep depression. It finally became real to her, when she saw her new home. Before, she couldn't imagine her life without her friends, but here she was. Sitting in her new room crying on the floor, as she continued to listen to the music from her and Lee's playlist.
Her mental health started to become better as time went on. After a month of living in the U.S.Summer break was officially over and it was now time to go back to school.
Binna's parents enrolled her in a really good private school. However, if you ask Binna, it was a school full of white privileged people, who only cared about themselves. But she couldn't be any more wrong.
On her first day everyone was nice and welcoming. They gave her a proper tour of the school, and was very gentle with her. Knowing that this was her first time in the states, and that she was still learning English. They informed her about all the extra-curricular classes she could take and the sport teams that she could try out for.
She even made friends on her first day of school. They all reminded her of her old friend group back in South Korea and she loved it.
One of her closest friends that she made at her new school was Kirsten. They met when they both tried out for volleyball. They both made the team and she loved the sport. However, she tried to give up her passion for dance. Dancing was her and Lee's special thing, and the thought of doing it without her, made her sick. So she wanted no parts in dancing if she wasn't with her korean friends.
However, that didn't last long. Kirsten was a very social and active teen. She was a part of a lot of clubs and she tried out for as many sports as she could. But she always preferred dancing, So when Kirsten had the opportunity to be a part of a well known dance crew, called the Royal Family, she took the chance. But not without forcing Binna to do it as well.
Unsurprisingly, they both made the team and to the displeasure of their parents, they had to move to New Zealand, where the dance crew was based. Their parents didn't want them to move considering they were teenagers and still in school. So before the school year ended they studied hard and took whatever test was necessary to graduate early.
Their parents were thoroughly expressed and sent them on their way to New Zealand with the proper funds. Because they were minors, Parris Goebal, the leader of the Royal Family dance crew allowed them to stay with her. In which, the three of them became really close.
With their new found sibling relationship with Parris, they started to become the main dancers in the group. They were amazingly separate but with all three of them together, they were a powerhouse.
They were extremely popular in the dance community. Articles being wrote about them, fan pages made of them, and a whole brand was made by them. They were on a rise. Everybody knew about them, and to most people in the dance community, they were known as celebrities. Binna would argue that they weren't.
Everything was going good in Binna's life, almost a little too perfect. Until the eventful night that caused Binna's life to do a complete 180.
Hi loves! I wrote this a couple months ago and posted it on Wattpad. However, I wanted to post this on Tumblr as well so here you go!!:) I hope you enjoyed it. The next Chapter will be out soon!

Not sure if war has inhibited this but are there tourist towns or luxury destinations in any of the countries? Would our crew have gone on a vacation to any of them if given the chance? Thank you.
Bastion's noble family, the Winalils, own the pleasure city of Winalils in southwest Durlyne. It's the largest and hottest Gefendur vacation spot in west Alderode. Grand fancy gambling houses, dance halls, opera venues, a huge arena built specifically for dueling and hound racing, opulent restaurants, a cutting edge museum of light paintings (glamours), and even a little gallery dedicated to the history of Tip Top Tom.
Most of Cresce's leisure spots are built around the pilgrim's path that Sororal Gefendur adherents generally walk a few times in their life. We saw some of this in Ethelmik, with its fancy brothels, but you'll also find playhouses, wrestling venues, dance halls, fine restaurants, zoos, and museums nearby. Pilgrims provide an excellent avenue for spreading and exerting Crescian soft power throughout Kasslyne, so Cresce maintains these areas well. They're a fine circus for the citizens too.
Sharteshane has a few very high-end areas and less stuff for the common man. If you want to holiday in Sharteshane you need to have money.
Both Toma and Elka have partaken of their fair share of delights from shore to shore but the rest of the cast probably not so much. Duane could never get away from his duties for long enough. The best he and Leysa managed was a pilgrimage to Tain in their early twenties. It was okay! Tainish Soud are a whole different breed and the Adeliers felt a little weird there. Good restaurants though.

Hello, nex-reblog-fest coming in, here to ask about the Tomura & Hawks parallels through your eyes 🫶🏻
Please serenade me !
Hello! I'm glad you saw the tags ^^
I really like the topic but I think I should say I'm not a meta writer like some other amazing blogs around there. I'll try my best, especially to remember all the details I can think of.
We know and we saw in the manga AFO took advantage of a scared, abandoned child who was on the streets after accidentally murdering his family and society didn't stop to help him. AFO groomed said child into following a path of hatred towards the heroes - when the same kid wanted to be a hero himself - and convinced Tomura he was born to destroy (I'll come back to this).
Hawks, too, was found on the streets, with his mother: both were in a extremely vulnerable position, and the Hero Commission used their state of poverty for their purposes. We don't have much details on how the Commission raised him (hopefully we'll get them before the manga ends), but we know from Nagant's backstory they surely indocrinated him and exploited his will to be a hero (the narration once mentioned "interpersonal skills drilled into him from a young age by the Safety Commission" - ch. 258). No child can give consent to "rough training".
Essentially, both characters were groomed/indocrinated by another entity/institution, who took advantage of vulnerable children in order to satisfy their goals. If Tomura was groomed by the "villain side", Hawks was indocrinated by the "hero side". Story repeats itself.
I've seen many considered (and still consider) Tomura in MVA as liberated and the other characters - namely Re-Destro in his narration - thought he was free of everything; however (and I don't want to go into details when Shigaraki focused meta blogs already analized the chapters), he fell into a path that took him straight into being literally possessed.
Even now, in recent chapters, he appears to be free from AFO's control, but the AFO vestige is not completely defeated and the real AFO will approach Tomura and Izuku soon; not to mention Shigaraki is still believing he wants to destroy everything and that will be his only salvation. Again, just how AFO groomed him to think.
Something similar happened with Hawks after the PLW arc: we see Keigo, at his mother's house, saying he actually abandoned Tomie and that's for the better; no one and nothing is holding him back, especially since the Commission can't give him orders anymore ("I'm free... of my shackles" - ch. 299) . It would sound great, if only it hasn't been said during a conversation ambiguous at best in the manga and downright insane in the anime.
Hawks is still working as a hero, has shown to be willing to sacrifice his life for Endeavor and the kids, is written as more and more insane with each chapter that comes out. If at first he was ready to tain himself for Japan, now he's ready to tain himself and die "for the kids' sake".
Back to after the Pro-Hero arc, we see Hawks recalling the conversation he had with Madame President and her associate stating "there's no better man for the job" (ch. 191) to infiltrate the LoV. And Hawks accepted - knowing he couldn't refuse, and said as such.
It seems both Tomura and Hawks are, to some degree, aware of how AFO/the Commission raised them, but the grooming runs in so deep they still live in a state of denial - for a lack of a better word to describe it.
Another similarity between the two is how they perceive themselves. I mentioned twice how Shigaraki views himself as "born to destroy" and Hawks, similary, thinks he was "born with dirty wings". If I remember correctly, Caleb Cook in the official English translation implied Hawks dirtied his wings with his actions, but the Japanese text implies his quirk was already that way. So, when Hawks claims he will tain himself for others' sakes, he knows he's already tained for his quirk. He was born like that.
These characters nurture hatred towards themselves, with Shigaraki accepting there's no saving him - despite desperately wanting to be saved - because he was born this way, that's what he wants; and Hawks committing immoral actions and putting himself on the line, while showing since he was introduced he has extremely low self-esteem, and considering himself tained - what is another stain anyway, if it's for someone else's happiness.
I'm sorry if I didn't show manga panels, but I've already spent a while writing this and I don't want to give it another hour. English is not my first language, so it's slightly more challenging to write fluently enough (I'm used to shitposts and very few smart takes anyway).
Hawks is, ironically, much more similar to the LoV than the pro-heroes, even if he's a pro-hero as well; it's pretty interesting to go into deeper details.
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to talk about Tomura and Hawks. I truly appreciate it.

Days, some more of them
The path from Dornoch to Tain was mostly forest paths, which were easy walking. Then from Tain to Alness there was lots of road walking. There were a lot of cyclist so I think it must be part of some sort of cycle route. After Alness I decided to take a break from walking for a couple of days so I got a train to a place called Dingwall and then on to Inverness. At one point I met a very kind cyclist who showed me a good spot to pitch my tent, and then came back later with a bottle of water and some snacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t take many pictures for those days, I was very tired and definitely needed the rest. I spent a while looking around Inverness (without my bag which was great) and it was very pretty. I went to the museum which was interesting, and stocked up on food and stuff for the next bit of the journey.

This is probably the least interesting post so far, but I promise the next one has lots of pretty photos.

Freerunning in Nairo
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A helmet was one thing, but Acolyte Tain wasn’t supposed to wear gloves. Her friend had been doing this for years, and trust him, gloves would just stop her from building callouses and using her sense of touch to her advantage. And Tain heard what he was saying, really, but there was a problem: she wasn’t an idiot. She was in this to feel alive. Staying that way was top priority.
Freerunning started in conversion cities. When Ascended soldiers trapped Yaostayans in towns optimized for assimilation, some prisoners held onto their sense of identity through small acts of rebellion. While shamans built secret communication networks, hunters escaped their apartments after curfew. They raced across rooftops, pursuing imagined ghosts of the beasts that once lived on these lands. They could cover two blocks, three if they were good, before someone noticed their empty cell. Those who did not return in time did not return at all.
Realistically, Tain wasn’t ready. But she was never going to be ready until she tried. She stretched her arms over her head, glimpsed over the edge to the streets below, tasted the crisp nighttime smog, and ran. With so much practice, clearing the eight-foot gap to the next roof was simple. The acolyte brought a crucial lesson to freerunning from her studies: maintaining momentum was everything. It kept objects in motion, minds quick and souls three steps ahead of fear. Momentum took her over the next gap in turn, ten feet across.
The shamans whined to each other about the hunters, calling their rebellion selfish, reckless, unsupportive of the fight for liberation. Yet every freerunner executed was information gained: by their recklessness, survivors learned which routes were surveilled and which were beyond the Ascendants’ notice. Up to twenty hunters at once would coordinate simultaneous breakouts using the shamans’ networks, knowing most of the runners would be distractions to give a lucky few a chance.
Tain landed on a ledge, scrambled up the wall and heaved herself over a guardrail. That would’ve stung without the gloves. Her only illumination came from apartment windows and beams of light rising from ground level—diffuse mana that provided the ambience for Nairo’s infamous nightlife. The parapet came fast: she jumped, flipped in the air, caught a glimpse of some idiot vomiting vomiting, landed hands and feet on a building’s pointless protrusion, hopped onto another roof, and kept running. Tain was in full improvisation now. The next gap was longer than she could manage alone, but wherever it made an attempt more beautiful, cheating was encouraged.
When outside tribes invaded the cities, hunters joined in as guerilla warriors, cutting off Ascended troops through a mastery of the city’s terrain greater than its makers. But while some of the freerunners’ paths lead to freedom, none lead to victory. Spirits are adaptable, and this strength is their fragility. Yaostay became a cluster of Ascended colonies and the land they sit on, its proud history integrated and tamed. It was one Brigadier Demlow who reduced the penalty for freerunning to a stern warning. The heirs to extinct Yaostayan hunters indulged in a rebellious pastime, and a method of resistance became a spiritual escape from the invisible limits of architecture—a night-long fantasy, an unconventional love for urban structure where once was despairing hatred.
All at once the engineer conjured orbs of mana in her hands, tightened her core, fantasized about parabolic arcs, stomped the ledge, threw the spheres at her shoe, and sprung. With strength she didn’t possess, Tain’s foot threw her sideways at an adjacent highrise. Her hands and feet hit the bricks, and before gravity could object, her limbs shone with mystic power and threw her toward the sky with a backward flip, spinning trails of fierce pink and blue following in her wake. She gasped, pointed her open grin upward, and threw her arms wide to embrace the freedom she always owned but never felt. School was gone up here. Her parents, the world and all its problems, nothing in the sky was real but her body, the oxygen and pillars of light. Then she looked down and processed how much higher she’d flown than she planned. Shitshitshit. Tain had a spell to slow her fall, it was basic preparation, but as she plummeted toward the rooftop adrenaline killed her focus.
When the Empire gave its assimilated subjects freedom to travel, some ran from the continent that once was theirs and settled in Origin, home of the Ascendants. Freerunning exploded, evolved, added twirls and flips. Yaostayan runners scolded foreign appropriators for reducing their practical resistance exercises to aesthetic performances, but nobody heard them over the sight of epic backflips down fire escapes. Neodecadinist districts made for the best freerunning. The buildings were designed to establish dominance over the laws of physics, so their asymmetric protrusions and abundance of ledges were the perfect inspiration for creative pathing. Pelbee wouldn’t do, the city was too traditional, but Nairo? Nairo was perfect.
Only practice could save Tain now: she leaned forward, her hands touched the concrete, elbows bent, but the signal from her hands reached her brain just too slow. Tain landed on her side. A bullet ran up her leg. She yelped, clutched her thigh and restrained tears. She breathed hard, breathed until her inner wind could extinguish the burning. Okay. It couldn’t be broken. She pushed herself to her feet. Her knees shook and her head pounded, but she was stable. The acolyte tore off her helmet, sighed with relief, leaned against the parapet and giggled. This was life, wasn’t it? When she glanced at the next building, one taller than her new vantage, she shooed it away and took the fire exit. Through the streets of Nairo, streets that were so small just minutes ago, she stumbled homeward. Tain tucked her helmet beneath her arm, and as she passed a narrow alley, she unstrapped her gloves and tossed them in a puddle of vomit.

Day Fifty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waking to the sound of the waves lapping against the shore is always a great start to the day.
Up and at it by Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, the day starts with aome retracing of the long arduous ride out to here. It's some heavy going with a lot of ups and downs, but the weather isn't too bad and the backdrop of the tall hills in the sunshine is a nice sight to head towards.
After some stiff work through the hills the road descends back down into Kilchoan, where I turn off the route back and begin a little diversion.
Down to the ferry port I ride, just in time to roll onto the ship as it puts in, and a brief voyage across the windy waters brings us in to the home of the beautiful hills that have formed the backdrop for much of yesterday's ride - the Isle of Mull!
The ferry docks at the pretty port of Tobermory, where I get a small resupply loaded. The weather also decides to introduce itself here with some slow steady rain that will continue for some hours now.
The road out from Tobermory is a very steep climb up, and for the next few miles continues to offer some long ascents as it tracks around the northeast coast of the island along the Sound of Mull. It's a very green place though, and makes for pleasant surroundings despite the hard work.
Past Salen and the road begins to flatten somewhat, still tracking around the coast past the mist-shrouded hills opposite.
I do sometimes wonder, when having days like yesterday that feel like really tough grinds, whether I have made mistakes with my nutrition or health or something when finding the going so hard. But days like today help to remind me that no, nothing is wrong, it was just a damn tough route!
Mull's road here allows me to really chew through the miles ahead despite the rain continuing to pour down, and as I reach further round the coast the Island of Lismore emerges through the mists ahead, marking the entrance to Loch Linnhe. Much of the hills and mountains in the distance are covered in a heavy mist of falling rain.
With a good 20 miles ploughed through from Tobermory, I finally roll into my destination for this stretch on Mull: Craignure and the ferry port. I'm perfectly timed to nip into the ticket office and then jump aboard just before the ramps are raised, and finally get to have a bit of a sit in the dry and throw some lunch in me.
Departing from Mull, the weather clears a little and I am treated to some lovely views all around as the ferry crosses over the water and puts back in to the mainland at Oban.
The town has the largest supermarket I've been near since many days back in Tain, so I take the opportunity to have a good restock of some of my food stores.
After caffeinating, it's time to get going once more. The route south though is a very busy A road, and whilst I have a brief trial ride down it, the traffic is hell even well before rush hour, and feels faintly suicidal to attempt to slog down from here.
However, for the first time in weeks, I am back in the land of proper cycle paths! It's a bit of a diversion inland, but Route 78 will eventually kead southward bypassing the horrible A816.
So, instead if heading South, I strike out East into the hills around Oban. There's some tough climbs initially, but as the road climbs out of town I'm granted some beautiful views of the hills all around. The rain even decides to have a break and let the sun shine for a while.
It's off into some nice country lanes from here as the trail follows up the River Lonan into the valleys.
A good few miles further past fields full of sheep and highland cattle, and a big front of cloud can be seen rolling back in. It's around 7pm by this point and I feel happy enough with progress today, ao find a patch of trees to offer some shelter from the approaching weather front and pitch up to have a nice lie down for the evening a few miles short of Taynuilt.
Not a bad day overall! Here's to tomorrow!

I wrote some original songs, so to speak, for my Hobbit fic. Here's one of them, played while the OC dances on a table being used by the Company (minus Thorin) to eat at while in Rivendell (warning, it's got some innuendo).
“Hey, Dilly dilly, said the cat to the filly,
As the cow jumped over the moon!
Wouldn’t it be silly, oh an itty bitty,
If he did that ridin' a spoon?
Oh! Well I knew a lass
(who had a fine ass)
That she rode all across
‘Ere moun-tain!
But if I made a pass,
Shame we would never last,
As long as a Dwarven ore vein-!
Hey, Dilly Dilly, said the cat to the filly,
As the cow lowed up at the moon!
Wouldn’t it be silly, oh an itty bitty,
If he took to riding a spoon?
Well them trees may sway,
And the Wizards do pray,
Sweet Iluvatar guide my way,
But I know a path,
I could walk at half-mast
Where the holier then thou
Like to play!
Hey, Dilly dilly, said the cat to the filly,
As the cow jumped over the moon!
Wouldn’t it be silly, oh an itty bitty,
This is a rough draft, but the scene is pretty great in my head.
If he did that ridin' a spoon?
But ey, sweet little kitty,
Let’s sing a little ditty,
And dance this night away!"

the queen seems an cerebral but pious sort. whats her take on ssaelism, or is she going to talk about that in comic?
It's a false religion began by an old narcissist with a guilty conscience and delusions of grandeur, who seemed to mistake his pymaric prowess for an understanding of human nature and moral philosophy. Rortidian Alderode repeatedly screwed the pooch, failing to assimilate Tain, failing to keep the country united under the Dammakhert, failing to adequately bolster its restructured fraternal Gefendur church. In the shadow of these failures, of course disaffected Alds turned to Ssaelism. It was the only structured alternative with any kind of belief system or path forward. The faith grew the more the Aldish Gefendur tried and failed to contain it. Eventually it rivalled them, found allies against the monarchy within it, and the last king fell. Since then, there's been no battling Ssaelism...
At least until the last decade. Whoever it was that unleashed the Weeping Plague on the Fachlynian Alds was a genius. Even if Queen Sonorie, personally, would never condone such an evil move.
But yeah, she's not a fan of Ssaelism :)

EXCERPT:
Mountains
“Hi, it’s Ginny Splinter, I’m listening. Tell me your wor¬ries…” It was something she said so many times a day on her Just Ask Ginny radio show it had become second nature, like sprin¬kling sunflower seeds on her muesli or kissing her husband, Adrian, on the cheek before he left for work each morning. Ginny arrived early at the Talk Heart FM studio that day to pass a financial planning article to a security guard who’d confided to her he was struggling to pay his rent. She stopped to chat to the young receptionist whose boyfriend wouldn’t commit to anything more serious between them. “You shouldn’t rely on him for your own self-esteem. Never forget you’re a prize worth winning,” Ginny told her with a kind smile. “Come talk to me anytime.” The receptionist wiped a tear from her eye. “Do you re¬ally mean that?” “A promise is a promise. Stay strong, sweetheart.”
Ginny walked away with a glow in her chest, touched when others trusted her with their personal issues. She wasn’t one to toot her own horn, but when her friends wept into their char¬donnay, she was the one they turned to for good advice and packets of tissues. Where others saw paths littered with bro¬ken glass, she chose to picture the sun rising over the moun¬tains. It was probably why thousands of folk from Greenham, Ginny’s leafy northwest England hometown, tuned in to her daily advice show. Throughout her fifteen years on the air, there wasn’t a prob¬lem Ginny hadn’t tried to fix, whether it was loneliness, retire¬ment worries, body dysmorphia, noisy neighbors or bullying at work. She offered solutions for the lost loves, secret loves and the never-been-in-loves. Empathy was her superpower. Other people’s issues made her appreciate her happy mar¬riage all the more. Her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary was just around the corner and she couldn’t wait to celebrate it in style. Whenever Ginny thought about the surprise holiday she’d booked for her and Adrian, in Italy, she couldn’t help smiling. Next month, in June, they were going to be stay¬ing in a gorgeous little village, Vigornuovo in Bologna, for three whole weeks. It would also be the perfect opportunity to renew their wedding vows, to reaffirm their love and com¬mitment to each other and to have some fun, too. The thought of spending quality time alone with her hus¬band made a rush of warmth flood her skin. Ginny couldn’t wait to wander the side streets of Venice at dusk and admire Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. More than anything, she wanted to reignite the spark in her marriage. She and Adrian had been so busy recently that they were like cars speeding along a motorway in opposite direc¬tions. It made her feel uncharacteristically listless, especially now that their daughter, twenty-four-year-old Phoebe, had left home to move in with her fiancé, Pete, and was busy ar¬ranging her own wedding. Ginny usually advised fellow empty nesters to keep busy by taking up a new hobby, perhaps home baking or walking a neighbor’s dog, but she was struggling to practice what she preached. Her hormones had felt out of balance for some time and sticking HRT patches to her backside, to banish her hot flashes, hadn’t proved to be the wonder cure she’d hoped for. Last week, she’d had a worrying urge to rip open her blouse on the high street and flash her lacy bra to passersby. “See, I’m here, still desirable, not invisible!” she’d wanted to shout. But really, she wanted her husband to make her feel that way. The Italian holiday was going to be the perfect solution. When she stepped into the elevator at work, Ginny was faced with a new life-sized poster of herself. She had an au¬burn high ponytail with a trademark curl at the end, and was wearing a pastel blue skirt suit with animal print heels. Her face had been airbrushed, removing every wrinkle, and she’d been given a golden halo and wings. Ginny Splinter, Advice Angel, said the tagline. Ginny pursed her lips. She didn’t like that her lines had been erased. She’d earned them over forty-nine years of life experience, like gathering stamps in a passport. In the office, she waved at her latest producer, Tam. There was a conveyor belt of young graduates keen to join Talk Heart FM, using it as a training ground before migrating to bigger and better roles elsewhere. Tam was the latest recruit. She buzzed with ideas and her oversized black-rimmed glasses screamed ambition. Tam propelled her chair across the office at great speed while sitting in it. “Gin, babe,” she said, tapping a pen against her teeth. “Thought we’d shake things up today and take some live calls, if you’re up for it?” Ginny sat down at her desk and frowned. “Are you sure that’s sensible? We’ve got time to run through the show and handpick a few problems. It gives me time to digest them and give my best advice.” Her mind flicked back to a live call during which a woman had set fire to her husband’s clothes after discovering his affair. Fortunately, he’d not been wearing them at the time. After¬ward, Ginny had fielded lots of calls from concerned listeners and had to assure them everything was okay. Since then, all her producers preferred to pre-record conversations. Tam drummed her fingers on the table. “Come on, Gin. Today’s lead news story is about a herd of sheep escaping into Greenham town center.” She fanned a yawn with her hand. “You must be bored of the same old format, too. We don’t want Just Ask Ginny to become the missionary position of ad¬vice shows.” Ginny narrowed her eyes. She knew her audience well. “Playing some great music, reading out listeners’ letters and giving them advice on air, plus a few pre-recorded interviews is a proven formula,” she said. “And the new poster makes me look like someone off Love Island.” Tam slow-blinked and tapped her teeth again. “Hmm…” she said, looking Ginny up and down critically. “Not sure about that.” Ginny was increasingly aware she was now twice the age of her colleagues. It felt unbelievable, laughable even, that she and Adrian would both turn fifty later that year. She always told callers that age was just a number, but she was finding the milestone confusing. One minute, she treated herself to a new pair of sparkly stilettoes, and the next she found herself reading reviews for thermal nightdresses. She bought pretty lingerie and vitamins to improve her energy levels. She was far from being old, but her youth sometimes seemed like a distant memory. “I’ve made my decision.” Tam pointed her pen at Ginny’s chest like a pistol. “Let’s go for the live calls.” Ginny tried not to growl. A few minutes later, she went live on air, playing songs by Ed Sheeran, Adele and Coldplay, slotting in a couple of her own choices by Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes. Many of the callers seeking advice used a pseudonym and sometimes even affected a fake voice. Ginny nervously gnawed the inside of her cheek as she took a live call from Confused of Greenham. The woman didn’t know whether to enter a third marriage with a kind, generous man she didn’t love, or to pursue a fling with a younger pizza delivery guy. “Picture yourself five years from now,” Ginny said. “You’re lying on your sofa, wrapped in a blanket with a dose of the flu. A hand gently sweeps the hair off your clammy forehead. You open your eyes and see someone holding out a cup of hot tea and some aspirin for you. Is it your fiancé or the pizza guy?” “My fiancé, I suppose,” Confused said. “Then there’s your answer. You can get pizza anytime from any place. Care and understanding are more difficult to come by.” Ginny wrapped up the call and Tam’s weary voice came through her headphones. “Try making the next call sexier, Gin,” she said. “We don’t want listeners nodding off.” “I’m here to help, not titillate,” Ginny said through gritted teeth. She ran a hand down her ponytail and picked up a call from the next person on the line. “Hello, it’s Ginny Splinter, I’m listening. Tell me your worries.” The woman’s voice sounded shaky. “Oh, hello. It’s Miss…Peach.”
“Well, hi there, Miss Peach. Thanks for joining me today,” Ginny said. “Is there anything you’d like to share?” The caller’s words stuttered out. “I only stayed with my husband for the sake of our child. You make a promise and then you’re stuck with it, for life. I wish I’d got out while I had the chance… I’ve wasted so much precious time and now I don’t know what to do.” A familiar ache of compassion rose in Ginny’s chest. It was something she welcomed but had also learned to control, so other people’s problems didn’t affect her too deeply. “I’m sorry to hear that,” she soothed. “It sounds like you’ve been through a tough time. There’s nothing you can do to change the past, but you can take control of your future.” “What if it’s too late for that?” “It’s never too late to move on. Focus on yourself and con¬sider what you really want from life—” “And what if I don’t know?” Miss Peach snapped. “What if I’ve forgotten how to think about me?” Ginny hmm’d and delivered a sympathetic pause while considering what advice to give her caller. People often just needed a gentle push in the right direction. “Why not make a list of all the things you enjoy, perhaps a walk in the country or a trip to the cinema. Try to get to know yourself again and—” “As if that will work,” Miss Peach interrupted, her tone growing more brittle. “And what do you know anyway? You think you’re little Ms. Perfect, don’t you?” Ginny’s scalp prickled and her mouth dried. Her uneasy sensation made the room tilt a little. She waved a hand, try¬ing to get Tam’s attention through the glass partition, but the producer was busy scrolling on her phone. “This call is about you, not me,” she told Miss Peach. “Please don’t let your re¬grets eat you up.” “I’ve seen photos of you and your husband in a magazine. Adrian, isn’t it? You think you have such a marvelous life to¬gether.” Ginny’s heartbeat began to thump ominously in her ears. A few thousand people would be listening in to this conversa¬tion. Oh, god, she hoped Adrian or Phoebe weren’t tuning in. Organizing a wedding was stressful enough for her daughter without this. Ginny drew a finger across her neck, indicating to Tam she was thinking of cutting the caller off. Her producer didn’t notice. “Shouldn’t you address your own problems before you lec¬ture other people?” Miss Peach continued. “Do you even know what your husband gets up to at work? How well do you really know him?” Ginny hesitated and rubbed the double lines between her eyebrows. Of course she knew Adrian, from the way the moles on his back formed a diamond shape, to how he liked his toast served warm, not hot, and with butter spread right to the edges. He didn’t like the bedroom to be stuffy so he slept with the window ajar, even if it meant Ginny had to wear socks in bed during winter. He thought Porsches were works of art but would feel like a cliché owning one. He could be grumpy until his morning coffee kicked in and he enjoyed a nice glass of Rioja most evenings. He loved dogs, hated cats, liked dark chocolate but never white and sang Oasis songs while he shaved. Nevertheless, something icy seemed to slither down her spine. “Miss Peach, what do you mean by—?” Ginny started. “Ask him,” Miss Peach said. “Ask him what?” But there was a click and the line went dead.

Path to Nowhere - Part Five/Final

There was no line that separated the Shroud from the land around it.  No fence, no border, nothing that visually indicated that the Elementals claimed the land from one step to the next.  Not that Rose needed such a thing, they could feel the slow and subtle change under their feet as they walked.  The steady awareness of the land creeping into their senses like a feline on the hunt.  Their soul sang for it even as fear gathered in the Elezen’s heart.  Why am I here?
The question went unanswered by the silent woods, Rose not daring to look deeper within theirself to find it either.  In truth they knew what drew them here, the compulsion to return home pressing along their spine like a parent herds a wayward child. Their steps showed that reluctance, slow and careful, not making a sound upon the decaying vegetation that cushioned the forest floor. Mismatched eyes looked all about, taking in the details of what had changed and what hadn’t, alighting upon the tallest trees with a smile that spoke of finding old friends hale and hearty.  From the first step it felt euphoric. The vibrating thrum of the rocks below their feet humming a welcome that sunk deep within the damaged places of Rose’s soul.  Tears welled up from the pain of it, the poison they learned to live with clashing against the aether that was rightfully theirs.  There was no room for both, the knives dancing within their veins, hot and sharp, confirming what Rose suspected since leaving Garlemald. To heal would be to hurt all over again.  No way out but through. The Elezen’s steps turned unsteady as beads of sweat formed on their brow.  The deeper they went, the closer to home, the more the pain intensified.  Yet, the beacon that drew them didn’t dim, the clarion call impossible to ignore.  It was a boon, something to focus on as perception narrowed down to each step and nothing more.  Shift, lift, move, plant despite muscles feeling like jelly. No way out but through.
Ignore the pain. Focus on home.  The sent rising from the ground with each step not one of decay, but a promise of life renewed. The shaft of sunshine crossing your face is not blinding, but instead a welcoming light along the path.  The song of birds in the canopy not a knife in ears gone too sensitive, but a chorus of encouragement to take another step.
No way out but...
When did they find the ground?  When did the vines writhe along the forest floor to grip and pull at them as if wanting to pull them under?  When did the vines grow thorns to prick into delicate skin and draw out cerulean laced agony?  When did the sky turn into spikes that pierced their skull to pin their eyes to the back of their brain?  When did home start to stink of vomit and tained ice that sunk into the soul to never leave?  ..through. Why couldn’t they breathe?!
No way out...The toe of a boot found Rose’s ribs, the kick hard enough to dislodge the liquid they were choking on, a large glob of something viscous splatting against the decaying leaves as they were knocked from their hands and knees onto their side.  The blue-black goop had a faint luminescence to it that was quickly extinguished as it sunk into the forest floor.  Mismatched eyes watered as the Elezen choked and gasped, seeking out air as they struggled to expel whatever it is that settled within.  From every orifice oozed the same oddly shaded liquid, staining Rose’s clothing and lending a peculiar, midnight-blue cast to their grey skin from the sweat caked upon it.
Another kick rolled the suffering Elezen onto their back, hands reaching down to grab the collar of Rose’s coat and pulling them up into a semi seated position.  Dark eyes, a match to their own darker teal one focused on Rose’s mismatched ones.  Almost identical lips turned upwards in an unattractive sneer, “Coming back groveling on your hands and knees? Thought you could charm the Elders into forgiving you like you always do?  Thinking that being the favored of us would win you a place back.”   Hate coats every word like sweat covers Rose’s body as they convulse and within their brother’s unyielding grip, eyes vague and glassy from their obvious suffering.
“Even the forest doesn’t want you here.  Feel and see how Voluspa rejects you.” A malicious glee crosses the youthful reflection of Rose’s face, lending the piercing eyes an otherworldly cast.  “You are nothing now Rose. Look at you, a faded, wilted parody of what you once were.”  Haldis made a disgusted sound as Rose coughed and vomited up another semi-congealed wad of noxious gunk that landed squarely on Haldis’ chest.  A startled yelp followed, Rose thudding to the ground as their reflection stripped off his shirt in a hurry to get the acidic goop off of their skin as it started to burn.
The force of landing dislodged another chunk from their lungs, the forest once more absorbing what was expelled.  The exertion left Rose panting and shivering on the ground, no longer struggling so obviously with whatever ailed them.  Aether flexed around them, a small spurt of water doused Haldis’ torso, the mismatched eyes flicking towards the conjuring with a low groan before breath got stuck in Rose’s chest once more.
“Fuck no.  Wait, you're not going to die here are you?  You aren’t fucking my life up again.  I won’t have them thinking your blood is on my hands. No, no, no... you will not do this to me Rose.”  Another kick and Rose jerked from the impact, gurgling as they managed to draw air within their lungs once more. “Get up. Get out.  You’re cursed, anthema, exile.  Be gone from the eyes of Voluspa. Be. Gone.”
The roughly spoken words shattered the shard of hope that Rose was holding onto, sending the beleaguered Elezen into a spiral of despair that blotted out everything else from awareness.  The roughness of being reluctantly carried, the healing aether that forced their heart to beat and lungs to breathe despite their mind shutting down.  How the one they shared their life with from birth tossed them out of the woods they both used to call home.
The last was a mercy even if Rose was unaware of it, Bloo alighting upon their head with a soft, enquiring chirp.  Every breath came easier than the last, nothing more was forcibly spewed from their body, their heartbeat steadied into a strong, even beat.  Only their soul remained in distress, caught in that spiraling grief of losing everything they fought to get free for.  Of losing home.
