At the end of my big TV Century 21 post, I joked that it meant The Beverly Hillbillies is part of the Doctor Who universe. Now I'm happy to say that some of that research made it into Quinton Reviews' discussion of "How the Beverly Hillbillies Changed TV"!
(You spotted that I was credited as a ghost writer, right? It's right around the 24 mark.)
(24 hours, that is.)
(And I thought The Tragedy of Yaz was long…!)

In Pictures: Gerry Anderson’s Century 21 Exhibition at the Cartoon Museum
A quick tour of London Cartoon Musuem's "micro" Gerry Anderson art exhibition featuring art by Frank Bellamy and Kevin O'Neill
Following up on our earlier report on an appearance by TV, audio producer and publisher Jamie Anderson and comic artist Lee Sullivan at the Cartoon Museum next month, here’s a quick “tour” of their current “In Focus” Gerry Anderson’s Century 21 Exhibition, courtesy of Richard Sheaf. Gerry Anderson and his team, including his then wife, Sylvia, revolutionised the world of puppetry with his…

Doing some research for a sequel to my Gallifrey maps, focusing on Skaro instead and I think I noticed something.
So Skaro has been shown with two distinctly different colourations over the series, a deep red:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And a more Earth-like, nuanced grey-ish planet:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could be due to whatever happened with the destruction of Skaro, the Time War, Antalin etc, but the colours seem consistent before and after the destruction...
While the timeline of the Daleks is very unclear, this seems to have happened shortly after the Daleks' creation, rather than simply been an effect of the Kaled-Thal war as might otherwise be assumed, with the exception of TMA/TWF being a restored 'cleaned-up' Skaro based on how much safer the outside seems. It could still be a long-term effect of the neutron bomb fallout, but I think we can be a bit more specific.
I think the reddening was a gradual effect that slowly overtook the planet. This goes all the way back to Terry Nation's Dalek Chronicles (even here, Skaro's depiction varies quite a bit).
First of all, there's literally a body of water on the planet called "the Sea of Rust". This can be seen in the "Dalography" map in The Dalek Book, but also much more recently in Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe, which features the same map:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given that rust is exactly what gives Mars its own reddish hue, this sea would seem to be the epicentre, and gives us a realistic mechanism for the change.
But why is this the case? And how does it spread over the entire planet?
The answer comes in Plague of Death, a TVC21 story. The test of a "Dalatomic" weapon results in the creation of a radioactive rust cloud that spreads like a disease (possibly literally as germs?), carried by wind currents across the landscape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though the Daleks successfully subdue the cloud, small fragments continue to spread.
Tumblr media
The rusted dalekanium does not seem to be infectious in and of itself, meaning the disease does not spreadly directly from Dalek to Dalek. Instead the black Dalek seems to show immunity, but acts as a carrier for the plague.
By the end of the events, the Dalek Emperor seems to believe the disease can be prevented from effecting Daleks in the future. I suspect this relates somehow to developments in dalekanium alloys, given the lack of much effect on the black Dalek.
We know that when Dalek Sec recieved his black casing, it consisted of a type of black metalert (an alloy of Dalekanium), so it wouldn't be surprising if the black Dalek in the story had this too - presumably after the advancements "Zeg" made in a previous TVC21 story. I expect all future Dalek casings were altered to include whatever material it was that protected him - perhaps Flidor gold or Arkelis sap, both of which we know was infused into Dalek casings.
I also think it's possible the static electricity of the Dalek city helped to protect its infrastructure, given how electrolysis can be can be used to remove rust.
So we know the Daleks survive the rust plague, but what about the rest of the planet?
Given the durability of the plague even after the Daleks believe they had surpressed it, fragments likely survived. During the events, a gale is said to be blowing East to South-East. While the rust plague that would have hit the city is stopped, I suspect there was some that missed it and kept blowing in that direction, which would lead it right into the Sea of Rust.
It settles here and begins to spread. Eventually, it spreads over the whole planet, possibly distributed by volcanic activity from the Island of Gushing Gold, turning metals in the surface a deep red and killing off much of the population of metal-based creatures like magnedons. I think we might even have met a victim of the plague way back in The Dead Planet:
Tumblr media
As to what happens then... who knows? Maybe, if it really was a germ, then it dies out. Or maybe it mutates to become less harmful, or to consume something else. Whatever happens, Davros's Daleks seemingly end up taking care not to reintroduce it when they rebuild.

You know what I always found disappointing about those old TVC21 comics strips it the payout with the Daleks. The Build up them coming to earth mention them almost weekly in contact 21, even Lady Penelope mentions them once or twice. And then we get no pay off. Like I know it was supposed to lead into Dalek Invasion of Earth 2150 AD and then latter got a completion in DWM. But what I always wanted was the cast of the Gerry Anderson earth fighting the Daleks as the occupy earth. Not to mention it would be perfect to introduce SPECTRUM before the Mysteron War give them an origin, have them fight Sakronian foe.
Honestly I still say the Gerry Anderson estate and the Terry Nation estate should team up and rectify that with a cross over movie (or at the very least a Big Finish Box set seeing as big finish have rights to both properties, or a short reboot of TVC21) to have them fight for Earth.
Like they could even pull the cast of the Lady Penelope comics in as well. For a massive crossover. Who doesn’t want to see that?
You could have Steve Zodiac and the cast attempting to escape from occupied Unity City, Troy Tempest teaming up with Titan to stop the Dalek invasion of the oceans, Lady Penelope and Parker attempting to create a resistance movement in thew ruins of London, Tracy Island acting as the last hold out of the World Government and the organised rebellion, and a certain Conrad Taylor travelling around trying to save those he can. And in the end the Daleks are reopened from Earth and SPECTRUM if formed just in time for the first episode Captain Scarlet to air on TV.
God I love the TVC21 shared universe. And god how I miss it.

I have some questions that I’m hoping somebody on here can help me find out:
1. Does anybody know if any Doctor Who books pre-2005 were released in the United States? I know in the modern internet age, everything is available everywhere, but I’d like to get into the older books, and I want to know if I’ll ever find American copies in used bookstores or by luck, or if I should just suck it up and buy British ones online. Not that I mind, but I’m sure international shipping is not cheap by any stretch, as is online shopping.
2. Does anybody know if the pre-Doctor Who Magazine comic strips by Polystyle and TV Century 21 were collected anywhere? I think that those comics are one of the most interesting parts of Doctor Who’s history, and I’d love to purchase them legally and experience them while supporting the creators. I know that the modern strips have all been collected, but these ones I’m a little more doubtful of.
3. What are some Doctor Who reference works that you know? I’m talking mainly real-world stuff, like documentaries, mainly, but also books and such. Anything and everything helps.
My askbox is open, I can receive messages, and I will see the notes, so if you know anything, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you.

Funny how the "20th Century Girl" viewers agree that of course Woon-Ho was dead, he would have been too OOC if he just left Bo-Ra with no words, because 25-21 fans feel the same about Baek Yi-jin staying in New York without telling Hee-Do first.
A movie with just 2 hours made more consistent characters with good final arc than a tv drama with more 16 hours.

The latest installment of Liberation of the Daleks in Doctor Who Magazine features a cameo of the Astrans. This is the first time Doctor Who has ever referenced the TV 21 crossover universe!

Watching Gerry Anderson’s 1970 TV series UFO again, and it strikes me that they made at least some attempt at scientific accuracy - for example, by padding the spacesuits to show they were presurrised when SHADO personnel  were out on the lunar surface. And SHADO Moonbase was a fairly modest construction, far from the Moonbase Alpha “lunar city” of Space:1999. Moonbase furniture was 70s-tastic but looked light weight - inflatable? - which is what you’d want in furniture you have to lift all the way to the Moon.
The design lineage of the interceptors suggests they were originally intended to be more realistic looking - I’m struck by how much Mike Trimm’s original concept art resembles the proposed-but-never-built Apollo Applications Project lunar reconnaissance orbiter.
Trimm’s lunar module carrier seems to have been  inspired by the Vought “Flying Pancake”.

Talking Pictures to air interview with TV21 and Look-in artist Mike Noble

If you’re a fan of the legendary TV Century 21 and Look-In artist Mike Noble, then you won’t want to miss The Noble Art of Fireball XL5 on Talking Pictures. Mike, who, sadly, we lost in 2018, is perhaps best known for his work on the British weekly comics TV Century 21 – drawing strips such as “Fireball XL5“, “Captain Scarlet” and “Star Trek” and Look-In – working on strips such as “The Famous…

Random Doctor Who Facts You Might Not Know, Part 8
The Gallifreyan village of Slothe was populated by people who relied solely on hunting and gathering, leading to the near-extinction of several species including the ulanda, trunkike, yaddlefish, and broakir. A Krafayis sent to the village by Death as punishment.
There is a TARDIS cradle at the Academy for students who already have symbiotic bonds but have not graduated.
The Doctor's Aunt Flavia named her cat "the Doctor."
As a child, the First Doctor played in the tunnels underneath the Panopticon. Also underneath the Panopticon is the Eye of Harmony.
The Twelfth Doctor calls the Tenth Doctor "Bambi" and refers to Rose as "Blondie."
On prehistoric Gallifrey, the aspects of the Time Sentinels would toss time sensitives into the Untempered Schism.
Barbara kept a diary that she intended to leave for Susan for when she began to live in the 22nd century.
The Eighth Doctor claimed he could think of fourteen different instances of wars being started over someone refusing a cup of tea.
The Dancing Plague was caused by mass hysteria. The lack of an evil presence causing the plague caused the Fifth Doctor some severe confusion.
Cameca gifted the First Doctor a brooch while he was leaving, which he eventually regifted to Susan in his Eighth incarnation.
The Fourth Doctor took Sarah Jane back to kill the would-be dictator as a baby, but upon seeing his Sixth self fail to do so, he realized there was another way. Thus, when his Eighth self went to go kill the baby, the Fourth told the mother, foiling all of the Eighth's plans. The mother realized her love for the baby and raised them better. And thus wraps up the the-Doctor-tries-to-kill-a-baby arc.
Following the TV Movie, the Eighth Doctor promptly loses all of his memory again and gets arrested for possession of cocaine.
Knowing that the Doctor took on the name Merlin, it is interesting to note that in King Arthur's court there was a woman named Ganeida, who was Merlin's half-sister and the daughter of a nun and a "demon."
Hecuba is the Queen of Time and the Toymaker's sister. Her games often relate to clocks and time, and if someone refuses to play, she turns them into clocks.
Satthralope was the Housekeeper of Lungbarrow (basically a medium between the family and the sentient House). She thought the Doctor was a "disappointment to the House" and a "wretched child." In fact, one of the Doctor's first memories is of Satthralope smacking him so hard that he could hardly walk afterwards. If the Doctor refused to come to dinner, she let the drudges attack him.
Some Time Lords have a tapetum lucidum, including the Corsair.
Yarvell, Davros's half-sister, was a peace activist. Calcula, their mother, drowned her, and Davros used her body for experiments.
