Sergei Korolev, Chief Designer Of Rocket-Cosmic Systems, USSR;
Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun, member of the Nazi Party anda Major in the SS, designer of the V2 and Apollo Saturn V rockets;
Elon Musk, CTO of SpaceX
I'm currently thinking Korolev is the least problematic of these three.

"Astronauts surveying a ridge overlooking a moonbase" seems to be a bit of a trope in SF illustration - maybe for compositional reasons. You want figures in the foreground as "staffage", and you want a high viewpoint to show the moonbaseto it's best advantage.
You see similar compositions in some Thomas "Yellowstone" Moran's paintings. Here's an example.
But the human figures here are tiny, almost unnoticeable - I think because Moran was trying to emphasise the scale of Yellowstone and engender a sense of the "sublime", Man overwhelmed by Nature. In the equivalent space-age images the human figures take up more of the view - I think because these paintings are more about Man overcoming Nature.

Two more Not The Discoveries:
The Ultra Probe from Space: 1999
The Altares from Into Infinity (which should have gone to series:-( )
And the briefly-seen Meta Probe from Space: 1999. I'm sure I've seen some 2001 ASO concept art, maybe a storyboard, where Discovery has that same engine arrangement. If I can find it again, I'll post it... found it. Not as similar as I'd thought though.

I'm going to start again with this model, I think I can do better.
Learned a lot about the Discovery's basic shapes making this, though, so not a waste.

The novel gives the exact dimensions of the monolith, but I still made an inaccurate model of it.
Discovery modeled in TrueSpace 4... and rendered in Bryce.

That Discovery clone post reminded me of something. The music video for The Train by the Quad City D.J.'s has a similar spacecraft in it. When it was current I got in an argument with my friend who was sure the video reused the Discovery miniature from the film.
I don't know that one... I'd like to see it, but I can't seem to find the video online.

A way to go yet, and the cross section of the storage pods is wrong, and I haven't got the comms dish support arms right, and the propulsion module is too fat, and the greeblies are completely made up (because I'm not crazy) but I'll make a more accurate one next time.聽聽

Another rainy Sunday. Reworked the AE35 comms dish to make it a bit more accurate, started adding textures, started importing the model into Bryce - which is turning into a nightmare, lots of weird render artifacts and crashes when I tried importing it in one go, so I'm having to convert the individual bits into .dxf format, import them one at a time into Bryce, and retexture them. It'll take a while. Got the drive section done though. Lot of work when all I want to do is render some still images of Discovery against images from NASA'a Juno probe.
