in the latest Nonsense in my house, I have begun to occasionally ask Gus “what does a catboy say?” and of course he goes “meow!!” bc he is a chatty little man and likes when I talk to him, and of course then I go “that’s right!!!! they go meow!!!! you’re so smart!!!!” and nobody else thinks it’s funny but we amuse each other and that’s what rly matters

My newest obsession are SOV sword & sorcery and fantasy films that look like they were made by either LARPers on their downtime or Ren Faire actors on the off season or a mix of both. Cheap costumes and random forest locations are a must.
And that's a lie, I had a brief obsession with this last year but a new movie re-ignited it...
Tumblr media
I recently discovered The Song of the Sword (1986), a film made by Abraxas Productions in Kansas, which was crewed by locals. I don't believe it has ever seen distribution since it has no IMDB page and absolutely no information on the internet about it. It was uploaded to Archive.org by Demolition Kitchen Video, who appear to be a Kansas based preservation group.
And it's strange. I never set out to find and catalog all these SOV fantasy films, but here I am.
It started when I was looking up the director of Phobe, The Xenophobic Experiments (1995), Erica Benedikty, and saw she also directed a SOV fantasy film called Kobblestone, the Journey Begins (1995).
Watching that led me to find this Letterboxd list by user waxmask. That list led me to Way Bad Stone (1991) and an obsession had begun.
Below is what I think may be a complete list of these SOV fantasy films (analogue not digital video): 1812: The King's Regiment (1984) The Song of the Sword (1986) Dragon Quest Fantasia Video (1988) [40 minute short] The Lords of Magick (1989) Way Bad Stone (1991) Dragonstrike (1992) [VHS with same titled board game] Scary Tales (1993) ["Level 21" story] Kobblestone, the Journey Begins (1995) Ionopsis (1997) Disaster Squad (1998) [40 minute short by high schoolers] Disaster Squad 2 (2002) The Gamers (2002) Masters of Magic (2004 or 2008)
Likely digital video but the same aesthetic and vibe: The Gamers: Dorkness Rising (2002) Druid Gladiator Clone (2003) Darkon (2006) [the best documentary about LARPing, in my opinion] Dark Dungeons (2014)

Backstory ⬇️
So this is a painting made by me based on a little comic series I made during elementary school titled “the gamers” - all of the characters where based on people i knew irl - it was just a project i made based on people close to me and having little adventures on paper.
So these two characters are Gamer Cat and Gamer Craft (2015-6?)

I need Hollywood to understand that I will not accept a villain in a D&D movie unless they chew AT LEAST this much scenery

since you enjoy being asked things and you put out book asks i will be momentarily stepping into your house to ask you about 3, 10, and 15
Ur standing on my couch bestie
3: favorite genre: I used to be super fond of fantasy type books but now I’m much more interested in mysteries and just general fiction
10: do you have a guilty fav: Not really. I mean to be fair I actively cannot read without causing terrible headaches which I’ve Got To Fix this summer for sure. As a genre though maybe love stories despite not really liking romance as a whole
15: Recommend and review a book: The LWA Manga Series, no I’m kidding though it is wonderful. Neverworld Wake is a Very good book I read quite some time ago where a group of friends get into car crash which lands them in a time loop as they try to figure out the death of one of their old friends. It’s got a neat mystery, interesting characters, a very interesting time loop world and rules, and overall is a book that stays in my head even years after reading it
