Monokuma's second Japanese VA, TARAKO, has died suddenly at 63 from unknown causes.

She voiced Monokuma in both the Danganronpa 3 anime and in V3, taking over the role from Nobuyo Ōyama, who retired from acting due to dementia.

Another sad piece of news to share: Voice actress TARAKO, who has played the lead role in Chibi Maruko-chan for 35 years, has passed away at the age of 63. Based on the popular shoujo manga of the same name, the series has run in Japan since 1990. Just this year, Crunchyroll had started to stream the series in North America, after several years of the series being made available internationally on Youtube in multiple languages, including the original Japanese.

TARAKO also did multiple theme songs for Chibi Maruko-chan, and you might have heard her in other series like Chill in Xabungle, Taruruto in Magical Taruruto-kun, Toto in They Were 11, and Kirara in Inuyasha. More recently, she had roles in the reboot of Urusei Yatsura as The Wishing Star, and was Zazie the Beast in Trigun Stampede.

While she may not be as well known in the US, she brought many families so much joy over the years in Chibi Maruko-chan, and for that she will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, TARAKO-san.

《急逝》TARAKOさん『ちびまる子ちゃん』声優らに囲まれ涙を見せた“最期”の舞台挨拶、自宅には先に旅立った仲間を悼む「天使コーナー」があった

　日本人なら誰でも知っているであろう、唯一無二の声だった──。3月9日、国民的アニメ『ちびまる子ちゃん』の主人公・まる子役で知られる声優のTARAKOさんが亡くなったことがわかった。63歳だった。

　TARAKOさんは、1981年にアニメ『うる星やつら』の幼稚園児役で声優デビュー。1983年には、ファーストアルバム『とっておきの瞬間』をリリースした。声優兼シンガーソングライターとしてデビューした後もしばらくはアルバイト生活を続けていたが、1990年に放送スタートした『ちびまる子ちゃん』のまる子役をきっかけに大ブレーク。ドラマに映画にバラエティ番組、さらにはエッセイ本も出版するなど、マルチな才能を発揮した。

　当初『ちびまる子ちゃん』が国民的アニメに成長するとは、誰も想像していなかったという。

「初めはスタッフやキャストの間でも『ワンクールで終わるんじゃないか』とささやかれていたのに、気づけば国民的アニメですからね。TARAKOさんはメディアで引っ張りだこの存在となり、当時は点滴を打ちながら仕事をするほどの多忙さだったそうです」（アニメ業界の関係者）

　放送30年を超える長寿シリーズなだけに、『ちびまる子ちゃん』キャストの絆は強い。

「昨年12月、TARAKOさんが演出・脚本を担当した舞台が上演された際、『ちびまる子ちゃん』の共演者の方々が客席に駆けつけていました。TARAKOさんにとっても思い入れの強い作品になったようで舞台挨拶では涙を見せていました。ご本人はどの舞台も“最期”だと思っていたでしょうから、観客席に座る仲間を見て感極まったのでしょう。X（旧Twitter）でも〈また来年ね　きっとね〉とさらなる舞台上演に意欲を示していたので、今回の訃報は残念で仕方ありません」（前出・アニメ業界の関係者）

So an plan I had for the artist alley event before deciding to scrap the idea was to make Pui Pui Molcar buttons. I tried to do it towards all the characters that appeared in the video game version of the series and wanted to focus on them being button themed faces. I did not do all of the characters within the game series either but did my best with the ones I have produced.

Bake the walleye roe (tarako) in a toaster oven at 500 W for 15 minutes. Mix this with grated daikon radish, which has been grated and drained of water. The spiciness and saltiness are just right.

Heaven’s Design Team, v.2 written by Hebi-zou and Tsuta Suzuki and drawn by Tarako

It took me a while to start reading volume 2, plot-driven manga are easier to binge read than something more educational and comedic like Heaven’s Design Team, but once I did start I remembered why I loved the first volume. Each chapter features a design problem; God sends his designers a request for a new animal and the team must figure it out, God wants “something that flies without wings”, and another animal that “can run without legs” then another animal “whose males provide milk to their young”, just to name a few design requests.

I love seeing how the designers work through the problem, coming up with mythological animals like the dragon and Pegasus as possibilities and even creatures from science-fiction (so chuffed to see the xenomorph) but ultimately having to reject them and explain how they don’t work on a biological level. The final approved animals are always a surprise, and each chapter ends with a fact sheet about them. Some animals everyone will be aware of but a whole bunch are so strange you almost won’t believe they exist.

To add humour the designers all have distinct personalities, and are propelled by general light-hearted plots, I was very happy to have a mini Agatha Christie mystery going on in this volume.
