after. four rewatches of headless, two of which were sponsored by dragging my parents into watching it with me, here’s a thought that i thunk.

spoilers below!!!

at least three of the characters (ichabod, matilda, baltus) all have fake books that they store their possessions inside. this makes varying levels of sense for their characters; matilda for the Vibes of spooky witch lady, baltus for keeping his bribery checks a secret, and ichabod for the fact that he’s a people pleaser who probably bought it off matilda to make her happy, but also ties in to a greater theme of the series.

(literally) not judging a book by its cover.

all three of these characters—and more!!—have ulterior agendas that are revealed throughout the series. ichabod isn’t just some dweeb in sleepy hollow by happenstance, he’s a descendant of the storms family, come back to town to right an ancient wrong. he is also a dweeb, but like. a cool dweeb. matilda isn’t just a witch, she’s keeping the undead corpse of her best friend alive with ancient evil magics and covertly working against her new friends. baltus isn’t just the town’s genial mayor, but a cutthroat politician who killed two people in his attempt to kill a third.

similarly, this lends itself to the story’s theme as a whole, that people are far more than what you expect. although this is plain to see in characters like brom (and his babes), who start off as airhead jocks with some pithy social commentary and wind up as airhead jocks with hearts of gold and loyalties as strong as the horseman’s sword, it is exemplified with the character of the horseman herself. so much of headless is about reexamining history and stripping away old biases. everyone believes the horseman is a decapitated hessian soldier, but is actually a woman practically written out of history in favor of her more famous husband. it’s about doing away with commonly accepted narratives and taking a closer look at the stories that accumulated to build the myth we all know today.

the fake books are both windows into the souls of their owners and the soul of the entire story!!! on the outside?? a beheaded hessian!!! on the inside??? a doing away with the ideas of colonialist cis white male-centric historical narratives that get preserved and a doing of justice for the names that get left out!!! it kicks ass!!!!! it kicks so much ass!!!!!

🌠: What is their Afflatus? Why are they associated with that Afflatus?

(I posted these profiles for all members in the spina venatores masterpost if anyone wants to check)

Chevon is a Star arcanist - this thread here (consider giving it a read, its very interesting! a few mutuals of mine wrote it!) talks about how Star arcanists either hide or show themselves to the world, but I like to think that their shared quality that makes them STAR arcanists instead of any other type of Afflatus is that dreamy-like vibe they have going on

They're all characters who have their eyes set on really big goals, who can easily be described as peculiar or quirky because they don't seem quite "down to earth" - I just woke up so I don't know how to explain it in detail but!! They're dreamy-like but very strong in their convictions; Regulus' passion for music, living the life of a radio pirate which is a whole adventure on its own; Baby Blue's love for Wonderland, to the point where she rejects reality to live the life of her dreams; Matilda, who wants nothing more than to be the best, to the point where it literally looks like she's living in a different genre of game altogether than the rest of characters like Sonetto or Vertin...

Star arcanists, to me, are stars themselves - they burn bright and sometimes their fire may fade out, but there's no denying that they all lead extremely unique lives, that they all feel so very far away because of their convictions, morals or goals. There ARE aspects of concealing and hiding like the thread talks about, but I feel like that could be recontextualized better as a disconnect between their reality and their ideal way of life.

I'll probably regurgitate and rewrite this better in my writing blog, but characters like Blonney, Charlie and Voyager - there's that disconnect. Blonney, who pretended to be someone she's not in more ways than one but whose passion for horror was the indirect catalyst for the WHOLE event in 1.2. Charlie, who does NOT have the heart nor confidence for theatre, but who becomes an entirely different person on stage. Voyager, who is an actual fucking alien, the disconnect can't get any more literal with her.

So in the context of Chevon being a Star arcanist, I like to think that all of this applies!

His whole thing is that the disconnect between his body and his heart, the way he was born as and the way he feels like, are unbearable. He's one huge metaphor for being transgender, but his character focuses more on the dysmorphia rather than the dysphoria! The feeling of massive dissatisfaction with one's body, not due gender, but because none of it matches the idea in your head

This is a lot of word vomit to say that Chevon developed an arcanum that could allow him NOT to change his body and shapeshift like Veal does, BUT to transfer his consciousness into someone else's body. That's why his medium is "Rebirth".

He's a Star arcanist because he's fully convinced that there is a way to preserve life in a perfect state between life and death, as to never die and never truly live. He has this dreamy quality to him, like he knows something you don't but is very polite about it, a gentle and a little whimsical vibe that clearly tells you this guy is not to be trusted, but you'll take the risk anyway because of the allure and the softness he has. But that's only because of his appearance, the most recent body that he stole - because his personality is just as rotten as the rest of Spinas.

🎶: What’s a song you associate with them? (And why?)

SO FAR I ONLY HAVE... TWO PLAYLISTS, one for Venison and another for the general vibe of Spina Venatores - BUT. BUT. I know that the songs I'll assign to Chevon need to have this very specific vibe to them

One that comes to mind right away is "Flood on the Floor - Purity Ring" - it has that VIBE and the lyrics vaguely remind me of Chevon's dynamic with Necrologist, the one person who had to constantly "bury" him over and over as he perfected his body-hopping arcanum. I like to think that a LOT of the tombstones in her museum are from his many different, short-lived identities

Ohh, I'd like to talk about Chevon's relationship with the other members of Spina Venatores but I think that would take. SO LONG. hmm. I'll settle for a fun fact then!

All members of Spina Venatores have ONE single detail that is never disclosed nor that they ever want to remember, which is essentially the root of their entire character - for Venison, it's their full birth name. For Mutton, is the first woman she loved and married. For Poultry, it's her roots and life as a human. For Veal, it's their original voice.

For Chevon, it's his original appearance - his "first life" so to speak, everything related to it. His gender, his skin color, his hair, his eyes, all of it is lost.

This single detail is something that all members have willingly discarded, forgot or avoid even thinking about to extreme measures, it's the root of their denial. It's also the one thing that each character related to them (Pavia for Venison, Schneider's sister for Mutton, Necrologist for Mutton, etc) knows.

When it comes to Chevon's original life and body, Necrologist is the last person alive who knows how he used to look. She was there when they took his lifeless body and she designed the tombstone for him herself. I like to think that she spend many, many months waiting to hear from his spirit, his last regrets and final wishes, but he never appeared - not sure how it goes from here, or how this affects their relationship in detail, but yeah! <3

Since you mentioned being a millennial what was the 90s like?

Time periods are weird things in that you can only really pinpoint what the overall vibe was in retrospect. So while you're living it, you're not always as aware of what the iconic aesthetics, sounds and attitudes of the decade is.

I was a kid for the entire 90s, turning 13 in 2000, so my perspective of the 90s is very much that of a child and not connected to any larger events globally. More so I remember the pop culture.

I've always felt the START of the 90s and the END of the 90s might as well have been completely different decades.

The start of the 90s up until around 1994 were basically 80s+. Things were all super saturated highlighter colours, and everything people liked of the 80s were taken and turned up to 11.

The mid 90s were a little awkward because the 80s were SUCH a strong decade in terms of pop culture, the 90s didn't really know how to identify itself. There was a strong grunge influence and what I always think of as the "sunflower on a denim hat" era in the middle there for a while.

Then, around 1997, Pokemon happened and The Spice Girls, and as the "New Millennium" was approaching, the internet started becoming more accessible and EVERY household now had at least one dedicated computer, the 90s idea of technology and futurism were starting to become a topic. Serial Experiments Lain couldn't be more a product of the late 90s if it TRIED. As well as several Japanese horror movies, often focusing on technology and isolation, started becoming popular in the west as well. And then in 1999, The matrix happened.

The 90s was described even at the time as "The Attitude Era". Everything was BIG. "Kidz Rule" was a massive trend, painting children ages 8 and up as rebellious and powerful in their own right (this is why movies like Matilda were so popular). "Girl power" was a big thing due to the Spice Girls. Everything was VERY loud, VERY in your face, unapologetic, oversaturated with colour due to shooting on film was still the norm and "digital colour adjustment" was not a thing yet in either movies or music videos.

Although there were concerns and scares and things, similar to today, I was a child and unaware of them. But overall, I would call the 90s as, overall, positive and confident.

Honestly, I found this a while back and it genuinely captures the decade the way I remember it the best;

Then 9/11 happened and everything changed.

A Post About My Favorite Fashion Dreamer NPCs! (so far!)

So, been playing this game daily since launch, and I've unlocked a share of the NPCs (I've heard there are 200 of them?? that's so much more than I thought there would be if true!) and some of them I love too much, so here's an extensive post about my favorites!

It's under a read more because I have no self control and fall in love with one every three seconds lol Also the NPCs are in no particular order, I'm just placing them in the order they are on my screenshots folder heh Also possible spoilers since you might have not seen some of these NPCs in your game!!

MY DEAR MY LOVE MY EVERYTHING. I love Bucky with all my heart and soul (even if he sometimes frustrates me with his color pickyness like do you enjoy green or not???? answer me!!!). He also bares a striking resemblance to a certain emerald haired bug loving boy I'm very particular about, so me getting attached to him was a no brainer lol

Really like Clarissa so much! I love her lines about wanting to be grown up, and how she seems "frustrated" that folks her age and even adults don't act mature like her hah! Also love it when i make lookits for her that are just a little cuter and she goes "Are you teasing me??? But, hm, this is cute." Like yes, you're adorable, pls! But I also like giving her the mature looks she wants because she seems so happy when I do <3

Eleanor, beloved <3 She's so cute and it's so frustrating because she barely shows up when I'm playing! I've seen her very early when I started playing, but she shows up like once very ten times I boot the game </3 Eleanor, please, come visit me, I miss you so much </3 Also the motivational stuff she says to you, like "You went outside for grogeries! Awesome!" like, she could fix me.

Farah sometimes shows up a lot and sometimes goes MIA. No in between. But I think her design and vibes are very good and I want to know more! Please show up more often so I can unveil your secrets (and take photos with you!)

Why do I like Franco? Is it because his forgetful dialogue makes me laugh? Is it the cool pink hair? Is it his cute face? Is it because he was probably the second NPC I interacted with? Who knows! All I know is that I need him to ALSO show up more often!

IAN IAN IAN. My need to put him in super cute clothes is strong but he isn't super into adorable styles and it breaks my heart because his face and size are perfect for cutesy, pastel outfits! Also ugh, his indecisiveness is cute too, everything about him is cute I need to put him on a shelf <3 <3

I LOVE ISAAC???? HE'S EVERYTHING???? Alien cute boy who speaks in code =crying forever= I was so surprised when he showed up doing his weird arm movements like "Woah, what's that?" and ugh, I love alien characters in any way shape or form and his colors just make me love him even more aaaah. I'm so glad he shows up a lot in my game and I can give him many lookits <3

MOMMY? MOMMY PLS? PLS MOMMY???? My love for Matilda is endless and I was absolutely devastated when she told me she was married like!!! I thought she was a single mom for the longest time due to her dialogue and then she dropped that bomb on me! Pls Matilda, divorce your husband and come stay with me, I can give you the world!!! She also shows up A LOT on my game and I'm always doing my best with my looks for her heh

Really like Orihime! She's so cute and I just feel so bad for her when I can't make her a good look and can't help her stop crying! I hope she shows up more and gives me more info on her character "arc" because I want to know more! (I know she's based on the Japanese tale, but I need to know more in the context of the game!)

If I'm not mistaken, Pete was the very first NPC I interacted with, and I really love his eyes and his top/vest is very stylish! I also like the way he repeats himself for some reason. I imagine some people may not like it or find it annoying, but I find it very charming heh He also needs to show up more!

Regina is so pretty it makes me wanna CRY. She's been MIA in my game for a while, which is strange because she would show up all the time! Also love how her dialogue is so disconnected from the world around her due to being obscenely rich XD I can imagine some don't like her for that exact reason (she's the 1%) but I find her behavior endearing!

Gyyyuh, I need to grab Rita and put her in my pocket she's so cute and I just want to protect her from everything!!! If anything happens to her I'll kill everyone and then myself! I also love making lookits for her because they always come off very cute <3

Shledon is such a simple character but I simply love his dark skin/"bleached" hair combo! I'm very weak for that hah Also the shape of his eyes are very pleasant to me, and so are his lips. I just think he's a very gorgeous character and he's always so nice to me <3 He's been missing a bit as well, been a while since I saw him </3

ONEESAN SISI!!!! She's everything! Like I legit fell in love with her at first sight! And her dialogue makes me so weak! Big sis characters are my BIG weakness and also they made her so pretty and FOR WHAT?? To play with my feelings? Well, it's working! I'm ready to die for her!

Twyla, my beautiful girl <3 So so hyped that they added a very early game dark skinned lolita NPC <3 We need more dark skin lolita representation up in here! I absolutely adore making Lookits for her because duh, lolita fashion is something I love and she gives me the chance to explore that a lot! Also love that she's a night owl hah

Really like Watson even though he might seem like a very "basic" character. But... his dialogue lines are just... why does it always feel like he's either coming on to me or flirting with me in a very roundabout way when we talk? Not that I'm complaining because I think he's VERY pretty but?? Is there something you wanna tell me Watson??

Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel idea

Plot:

A few months after the events of the first movie, Mario and Peach are developing strong feelings for each other and Mario is planning to tell her how he feels about her. However, Bowser breaks free and accidentally gravely injures Peach during his breakout.

I’m curious but ever since you dropped your Harrison hcs I’ve been thinking about what he would be like when he gets older. Are there any hcs/info you have for him??

I'M SO HAPPY Y'ALL ARE INTERESTED IN MY HCS IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME!!!!! 💖💕💫🩷

I have like two paths I could see my version of older Harrison going down. Let's say roughly age 17 or so, he either swears off using absolutely any of his natural magical ability and keeps his illusion/slide of hand tricks utterly private for the most part. The first being a desperate attempt to regain his parents trust, the second with the card tricks being more of getting shamed out of being open with his peers with his hobbies. I wouldn't wanna see him kept on this path and I often pair it with some major character development story. (In my head atleast, I don't think I'd ever be able to use a fanfiction writing website or have the energy to regularly update one or anything like that. I would definitely maybe write short fics on Tumblr one day.. maybe)

The other option being he actually never stopped working on his talents like that and has steadily gotten so much better. (At the start of the show he accidentally sets David on fire, in much later episodes he's able to make rings of flame, already MAJORR improvement!!) He works on his other abilities, making things levitate ect.

So when they start having these hiccups, often small physical items or spells bursting out of him during strong feelings (leading to panic and embarrassment only making it worse.) Harrison feels like it's a total setback. That his work so far didn't mean anything, he has no idea where his powers come from and as they change he apparently has no idea how to control them after all. Alot of old doubts, and new ones emerge. "Maybe it would've been better to have never had them in the first place."

I like to think after awhile he regains this hold over it, and it was just a sign of like. His magic going through puberty/hj and it turns out stronger in the end.

Other older Harrison HCs include he's definitely a swiftie and jumps up on his bed lipsyncing doing a fucking Matilda as shit floats everywhere.

His formal vest and top hat get switched out for a casual vest and beanie hat (constant hat hair) wouldn't it be so funny if he had a top hat shaped pin on it/hj

His like signature little thing I love putting on his clothes and drawing him with is the ace of spades. Small charms n shit I love it.

His frienemy thing with Nerris as she matures turns more into friend leaning. (Bc like, their dynamic is not 50/50 she is nearly always the one coming at or for HIM 😭 and it's coming from a very childish reasoning- which is okay. Bc she's a child.) So as she gets older and grows out of her issues that caused them to not get along they become closer.

Mostly due to them both being much better friends with Preston and spending time with each other via him.

But since they're older and Preston fills alot of his time with the multiple hobbies he has and Nerris has other friends to hangout with, Harrison is still left on his own sometimes. He goes through these bits of bad mental health and "everyone hates me" thoughts but doesn't really let anyone know about it.

I have this OC Quincy, technically not a camp camp oc I'm actually embarrassed sometimes to add him into things bc he doesn't fit the vibe of cc what so ever but the angst he can make is so good 2 me

He's this demon with magical know-how but no power of hisown. I like to think of Harrison (who notoriously throughout the show wants company.) Kinda ignores all the red flags and "I've always said don't judge a book by it's cover"s his way into accidentally getting manipulated by him. But also getting incredibly helpful magic lessons out of it too before it comes to a head.

Matilda: I think INFP ultimately, I wasn’t sure at first but I think her emotions were shown to be so much deeper than we thought at first sight and her whole character arc is about her moral conflict, and still she vibes with Ichabod so closely, so I think INFP fits her best

This is gonna be a long one so strap in 😂 tbh ive been a tad apprehensive today about going purely cause of what ive seen in Twitter (and we all know its bullshit but it sent my anxiety reeling). this probably isnt exclusive to harry but the people around me standing werent super friendly (i say this off the back of mcr in which you buddied up with the people around you in an instant for mosh pit safety) but we move - this soon changed and i found friends (going solo can be tricky) but there were still some bad vibes. i got to the venue literally as doors opened so ended up at the back (which for Brixton is still very good)

The pre show playlist is VERY one direction heavy. H is lierally the biggest fan.

cannot even begin to describe how good he was, the crowd were insane and there was a moment during little freak where he genuinely looked surprised at how many people knew the words. Matilda made me sob but whats new there, especially when he prefaced it by saying we had to make sure we loved ourselves.

Up until the misjudged clearance, Ellie was having a great match! Not just by opinion, but by stats. It's cruel for her and all the Matilda's. I will say that AUS didn't pressure England in the first half and the defence were made to work overtime. Fatigue and not quite 100% knee is a factor, even though trolls and haters would never acknowledge that. I just hope she recovers mentally and comes out firing for Lyon!

To me, the vibes from the Aussies were just off from the beginning of the match. To me I knew immediately they were going to be outplayed and that England was going to capitalize clinically. The Matildas looked spent; unsurprising coming from that France quarterfinal. Not to discredit that important goal from Kerr, but the Aussies also had more creative flair to them when she wasn’t starting versus the tired tactic of getting the ball to Sam when she’s on. I had expected van Egmond to be started and Kerr subbed as her minutes were still limited. Kennedy had just come back from injury too before getting injured again was also another loss due to her aerial presence. She was replaced by Polkinghorne, who wasn’t playing regularly as she was also injured.

I think what Ertz is to Vlatko is who Ellie might be to Tony. Mistake aside, I think her coming from an ACL to a starting AND finishing IX was a big ask from her. I thought Grant should have been alternated between the LB/RB role in managing Catley’s minutes as well as Ellie’s. Again, credit to Tony for bleeding in new players—Ellie praises him for this in a previous interview, whilst also emphasizing that you need a strong 23 to win big tournaments—but it felt a let down from him to express the importance of finishing IX’s and then not utilizing them in actuality to create depth. What good are game changers if you’re only playing them at the 11th hour at a semi-final?

Another interesting month! I started July strong with my ongoing obsession with Minx by Sophie Lark and delved into some of Sophie's mafia books. I also did a reread of one of my favorite Harlequin Dare series by Lauren Hawkeye which is a modern retelling of Little Women Except They Fuck (Beth's book Playing Dirty, was my favorite). I got to read some new releases like Tracey Livesay's The Duchess Effect (a solid sequel; this book definitely doesn't fall into the trap of adding manufactured drama to drive a wedge between couple that's already together) and Sierra Simone and Julie Murphy's Snow Place Like LA (adorable). I figured out some of my limits when I attempted Anne Rice's The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty and Harley Laroux's Losers Part II. On the other hand, I realized I'm willing to read anything anything Sierra Simone writes as I venture into reading her Thornchapel series. Anyway, here are some standouts this month:

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint by Alexandra Vasti

If there is anything that gets you excited about an author's upcoming novel, it's a free novella with a heroine who secretly publishes erotic cartoons and uses the hero as inspiration, unbeknownst to him. Of course Ashford finds out and he's PISSED. So he storms to London to confront Matilda about exactly how she knew about his ass tat and kinky proclivities, and she (somehow) ends up as his sister's art teacher. It had gorgeous chemistry, great banter, and I'd strongly recommend it.

A Caribbean Heiress in Paris by Adriana Herrera

Reading An Island Princess Starts A Scandal last month and loving it is what convinced me to read this prior novel and surprise, I ended up adoring this book as well. I am in awe of Adriana for writing race the way she does in historical romances, as well as feminism in a way that doesn't feel shoehorned, but rather, it feels natural and period-accurate, while still being relatable to a modern audience. And of course, Luz Alana and Evan's chemistry is off the charts; he's a smooth man (and biiiig and hellbent upon reveeeeenge; really, what more do you want?) and she's spirited and determined to carry on her family's rum legacy while also being an innovator in the field. I said this regarding An Island Princess too, but I hope this book will one day be regarded as a classic and set the standard for diversity in historical romances.

A Lesson in Thorns by Sierra Simone

The sole Sierra Simone series I had not read because the deluded part of me was scared of the "gothic" vibes. Anyway I finally decided to buck up and give it a shot this month and I wasn't disappointed in the least. It's classic Sierra Simone (complete with references to her other works; and we know this is set in the same universe as the New Camelot series) which means there's kink, queerness, and a throuple complete with a dom trying his best, a tragic little sub (ok St. Sebastian is a sub and Embry Moore was a switch, but that being said, the pining vibes are STRONG in both of them), and a gal with a masochistic streak and some kinda prophecy attached to her. I enjoyed the witchier aspects in this one (pagan, if you will; my sister and I have a running joke where every time someone on TV or in a book refers to paganism derogatorily, we'll be like IT'S US, but lucky for the Thornchapel gang, they got their rituals okay-ed by a priest so...), and the final ritual sex scene (which ended up being more women-centric than I thought in the best way) and its aftermath (more sex yay).

The Perfect Scandal by Delilah Marvelle

CW: Discussions of self-harm and suicide

@jeanvanjer always comes through with older historical romance recs. Zosia is a Polish countess and amputee who is trying to get married in England ASAP for geopolitical Reasons. Lord Moreland is a politician and stickler for propriety who finds himself propositioned by Zosia through her bedroom window which faces his bedroom (we love a proper man cracking one window kiss at a time). From there, things pick up: there's a great carriage sex scene, they attempt to run away to America, she gets kidnapped by a Russian (a dastardly! blond! Russian! who deserves his own book if there was any justice in the world) and taken away to Russia. If you like your HR with a strong side of political drama and family mystery, I'd absolutely recommend this book.

The Dare by Harley Laroux

The author provides a list of content warnings and kinks in the beginning and I'd strongly recommend reading them

A twist on the popular bully/victim trope; Jessica is a couple years out of high school and attends a Halloween party in her hometown where she runs into the guy she used to bully in high school, Manson Reed (I know). After she loses a dare to him during beer pong, she agrees to be his slave for the rest of the night and from there, shit gets wild real fast, and by wild, I mean a lot of sex, a lot of degradation, and there are clown masks involved... among other things. I couldn't particularly get into the following books, Losers Part I and II, but this novella on its own was great.

THE STONES OF VENICE LETS GOOO!

my fave this season for sure

the Stones of Venice was really cool! i was incredibly stressed throught because the story gripped me so tightly, and that is a great win in my book

these adventures seem to base the formula about having great stories and gripping plots, and some character moments throught, i can't wait for a more character focued episode and i hope that comes soon, but i do really adored the story this time, i think its my fave so far!!

as usual more spoilers under the cut

i really liked Charley standing up to the duke, i like the art creator and i really enjoyed the doctor this episode!! i have a bunch of fave quotes this time because he was just so interesting in this one

they have seem to again, separate Charley and the Doctor this episode, but this time it was with actual character motive as Charley wandered off on her own and i really liked that! if you are going to separate the companion and doctor have it because one of them following their interest! i liked the interest Charley took in the gondolier and i liked how she wanted to help!

the sequence of them hypnotizing her really surprised me lol like holy shit

the character as usual were very strong, to the point where i really liked most of them!

the thing i really didn't connect with that much was the ending and how the gondolier's resolution feels like it was put aside for focusing on the Duke and his wife, but the doctor driving a gondola was really sweet

Charley seems to finally reach the best friend place! cool for Charley! it feels like it suted her

fave quotes timeee:

lol also the musical reference, i knew that this doctor is a musical fan!! you can't tell me that this doctor, from what i've seen so far, doesn't listen to Matilda and Phantom all the time

this doctor seems to say his speaches after the fact, after the day is saved, sort of putting a cap at it, and i like that, he opirates on stright up vibes so far lol

also the hints of Charley going against the doc!!! love that

at the end, this was my fave episode so far, ending it in a nice way and i had the most fun with the plot

I currently have 3 detectives (kind of, two of them are *this* close to being sent back to my lil sandbox)

Rose (Rosie) Palmer:

Rose is my favorite and actually both my Nate/Mason detective (She was my first detective and I did Nate's route first, but when I started Mason's next I was like.............I don't want to make anyone new, I love her). In Nate's route, Mason is the bff and in Mason's, it's Nate lol I just love them too much. Despite being an only child, she's what I call the Big Sister Friend, because she'll "bully" you mercilessly then turn around and defend you within an inch of her life from anyone else who even thinks about hurting you. (as a big sister, I feel qualified to bestow this title upon her) Her top two professional skills are Science and Deduction. She's bold until someone (Mason) calls her bluff.

She's *mostly* the same in both routes, but somehow in Mason's, I never got a skill above 70 in book 2, so I assume that's why she kept getting the shit kicked out of her in book 3. She's definitely a people pleaser, "no I'm fine!" (screaming internally) type gal. So her relationship w/ Rebecca is like, right in the middle because she's like "yeah sure whatever" while clenching her teeth, just to avoid an argument. There's a lot of anger simmering just below the surface, but she doesn't want to take it out on anyone. And she's a lot like Adam in that she's going to (and wants to) be the decision maker, so when it all goes to hell, it's on her. She's going to worry about everyone else before herself and soon she is going to come apart at the seams. Overall, she has a strong sense of duty, cares a lot, and is funnier than me. Her true bestie is actually the legend, Vieno. I don't have any good visual references of her yet because frankly this is the first time I've ever let my detectives exist outside of my own head, but please accept this offering of a song from my wayhaven playlist (update: oops just kidding now they're real and viewable) Rose: "You First" by Paramore, "King" by Florence + The Machine Nate x Rose: "Midnight Rain" by Taylor Swift, "Can't Take My Eyes off You" by Frankie Valli Mason x Rosie: "Bleed Magic" by idkhow, "Work Song" by Hozier (bonus: "Cruel Summer" by Taylor Swift)

Eleanor is SO lonely and bitter, I want to hug her. She's a "rebellious youth" detective because she spent her teen years trying to do increasingly outlandish things, just trying to get her mom to notice her and maybe even have to come home. And now she's in love with Adam and playing the worst game of "He loves me, he loves me not" of all time. She's pretty by the book these days, her highest stats are combat and people, and she didn't encourage Tina or Verda to search for the truth, so she's LONELY lonely by book 3. Her bff is Felix!! She needs someone to lean on and brighten up this miserable existence I have crafted for her. Barbara (Barbie) Cooper

This is my newest Felix detective (I had another but we were not vibing). She is sunshine personified and her name is Barbie because I created her the same day of the Barbie trailer drop. Her top skills are People and Deduction, she's so bright and enthusiastic that Adam constantly feels like wearing his sunglasses around her, yet they're also besties. She's very good at playing mediator when clashing opinions arise. She's the type to do things properly right up until someone she loves is in trouble, and then she'll break all the rules without thought. She has a good relationship with Rebecca, but I kinda want to start destroying it with every secret Rebecca reveals..... after. four rewatches of headless, two of which were sponsored by dragging my parents into watching it with me, here’s a thought that i thunk.

spoilers below!!!

at least three of the characters (ichabod, matilda, baltus) all have fake books that they store their possessions inside. this makes varying levels of sense for their characters; matilda for the Vibes of spooky witch lady, baltus for keeping his bribery checks a secret, and ichabod for the fact that he’s a people pleaser who probably bought it off matilda to make her happy, but also ties in to a greater theme of the series.

(literally) not judging a book by its cover.

all three of these characters—and more!!—have ulterior agendas that are revealed throughout the series. ichabod isn’t just some dweeb in sleepy hollow by happenstance, he’s a descendant of the storms family, come back to town to right an ancient wrong. he is also a dweeb, but like. a cool dweeb. matilda isn’t just a witch, she’s keeping the undead corpse of her best friend alive with ancient evil magics and covertly working against her new friends. baltus isn’t just the town’s genial mayor, but a cutthroat politician who killed two people in his attempt to kill a third.

similarly, this lends itself to the story’s theme as a whole, that people are far more than what you expect. although this is plain to see in characters like brom (and his babes), who start off as airhead jocks with some pithy social commentary and wind up as airhead jocks with hearts of gold and loyalties as strong as the horseman’s sword, it is exemplified with the character of the horseman herself. so much of headless is about reexamining history and stripping away old biases. everyone believes the horseman is a decapitated hessian soldier, but is actually a woman practically written out of history in favor of her more famous husband. it’s about doing away with commonly accepted narratives and taking a closer look at the stories that accumulated to build the myth we all know today.

the fake books are both windows into the souls of their owners and the soul of the entire story!!! on the outside?? a beheaded hessian!!! on the inside??? a doing away with the ideas of colonialist cis white male-centric historical narratives that get preserved and a doing of justice for the names that get left out!!! it kicks ass!!!!! it kicks so much ass!!!!!
