Planning and inspiration for my imagery.
For my final outcome I aim to produce a series of images to form a digital photo book. I want to experiment with visuals and how I can interpret the idea of adapting connecting and going back to a sense of normality, after emerging from a global pandemic. I decided to use photography to get my ideas and message across because personally I think an image can often be much more powerful than written text. I think this because it can be interpreted in so many more ways than a fixated text. I hope to create a sense of a comical outlook on what it will look like once things begin to go back to normal, using props and expressions to amplify the emotion and message I want the viewer to experience. My main inspiration for this shoot comes from the image of a grandchild hugging her grandma through a sheet of plastic which featured on BBC news, I want to convey ideas of connection and how this will have to be adapted in order for us to be safer around people. Perhaps experimenting with the idea of PPE fashion and see how I can combine the idea of connectivity with Covid safe fashion.
Photographer Stella Morais created a series with a plastic sheet for a fashion magazine, taking transparent plastic and manipulating it with her models poses. I found this helpful too see how I could potentially get my models to pose with the material as well as being able to see how it photographs best from certain angles. I want my shoot to differ from Morais’s by portraying ideas of connection and using a sense of subtle humour when viewing the images. Trying to make light hearted fun out of how we have to adapt to normality by going to some extreme lengths.

Stella Morais Interview!
What was your first photoshoot you were happy with?
Oh good question. I done so many shoots, and as I am shooting and editing the photos I love them all. But within days I find so many errors, or things that could have been done better, but I guess my ultimate favourite is this one : https://www.stella-morais.co.uk/ recondition
What was your best experience with working with a stylist?
My best experience when working with a stylist is when they just understand me. My dear friend Heather Green is ever so good with that as she gives space to try new things with the clothes and she understands my vision. Personally I think the relationship between the stylist and photographer is vital. If neither one of them is completely involved then it just means the results won’t be as expected.
What was your first commercial shoot, and how did you get it?
My first big commercial shoot was for Toni&Guy a few years ago. They actually found me via instagram. Which goes to show that we as self employed photographers must keep our social media going strong, as that is potently your bread and butter.
Do you think using film adds anything to a shoot?
Not necessarily unless the client has especially requested analog photography. I personally love the effect and the rawness of it, but its not everyones cup of tea.
Do you think the camera you use is important to keep consistent? What cameras do you use?
Yes but also no, especially at the beginning. It does not matter what camera you have. What matters is the vision you have and how you going to get it in paper. For a long time I was using an amateur camera, it did the job just fine. But of course, the quality of work is a lot better when you have a proper professional camera. Dont ever let that fear of not having the right kit turn you down. I now shoot with Nikon D850.
Have you found it necessary to have an agent to get jobs?
Nope. I always get the jobs my self. As I said maintaining a healthy social media always helps. But at this point of my carer I would love to get signed, there’s only so much you can do by your self. I want to be able to shoot for bigger clients and magazines which sadly only use signed photographers. Hopefully one day.
Your work ties together really well, what do you think makes it do that?
I tend to put a lot of my self in my work feelings wise, and I think it shows alot. For a few years I was going through something quite difficult in my life, and I can definitely see that in my work, its a bit dark, not the light but the way I pose my models.
Do you find that working with as many people as possible helps you? Or just working with one team lots of times?
It does help you go further in your career. But it doesn’t work for me. I like to work with the people I know, they are now my friends, they understand me, they appreciate the way I work. Theres so much respect in my team, I love them.
What piece of work would you consider to be your big break?
Vogue Portugal Print : https://www.stella-morais.co.uk/vogue- portugal
Do you think being able to work in a team dynamic is as important as being able to work on your own?
I am not very good at working alone, not when it comes to shoots. I love to bounce of ideas with my team. Though saying that, I work alone alot, as for me being a photographer doesn’t mean your shooting all the time, you only in the studio maybe 3-5 times in a month, the rest of the time you’re editing, emailing, making new mood boards, and that I LOVE DOING alone. I think it would change the dynamic massively if I had to work with people everyday. I need space to create. And I am quite confident in my own skin to do alone.
Do you think making a mood board collaboratively is a good idea or do you usually work on them on your own?
It can be. But it only tends to get a big messy, with so many different ideas etc. I think if you are the photographer and art director you are the boss. Its your ideas and you must stick to it. You can of course let the team be as collaborative and creative as they want, but at the end of the day, the team must follow your mood board. What my team do is as soon as I have sent them my final mood board, they go off and make their own and send it to me for approval and that works brilliantly.
Do you think your style has changed very much throughout your photography career?
Yes. And it will forever change, not drastically. Being an artist you are never satisfied with the end project. You always want to be better and do better. I am my own competition hehe.
Do you do other jobs other than the ones that you show on your website/instagram?
I was working in a coffee shop till up the beginning of last month to help me sustain my own projects. But I was getting too tired and uninspired so I decided to quit. Something else will turn up I am sure of it.
Do you often hire equipment?
Yes, not always though as all studios in London have the kit I need. I usually only use one flash light but if I am on locations I tend to hire a few things ; light, background, clips, light reflector, lens etc.
