i saw someone spread hate to Keiko bc they were a Bashir/O'brien shipper, and i do NOT agree with that.

I feel like people who write off Kirk as a "womanizer" don't really draw the lines in the right places.
To me the division is not "man who has a lot of sex | man who doesn't." It's "man who treats women as objects to collect and enjoy | man who genuinely sees women as people and loves them."
It's the post scarcity future, I'm sure there's a vaccine for every STI and we know their birth control works great. There's no reason not to have sex if you want to have it. There shouldn't be shame involved in having lots of it.
But if you watch Kirk carefully, he does not ever treat women like collectibles or disposables. He interacts with them very much as people. Some he flirts with and it's not serious (which they know). Some he's trying to help. Some manipulate him, which sucks. And some he presumably has sex with, but only because he genuinely likes them as people and wants to do this fun thing with them.
None of this fits the idea of a womanizer as a man who takes advantage, pretends to be in love only long enough to score, cheats, gropes his employees, can't see women as people because he's only looking to get as many of them into bed as possible.
So I wish people would stop painting him as that. He's a flirt, he falls for people easily, he's noticeably horny, but he's never disrespectful of women. The writers were very careful about that. They saw the world around them full of that kind of caddish behavior and wrote a man who would never. They show Kirk being tempted by Rand, Marlena, etc., and then making the deliberate choice not to act that way. Because they were making a point about how a hero acts. We even see him give Charlie a lecture about how to treat women, and it's a lesson he personally follows. It's a bit heavy handed if anything.
And then people watch like half of one episode and go "oh yeah ha ha that Kirk, such a sixties womanizer hero, so backward, I'd never watch that." I thought that initially before my recent rewatch, but....that is simply not what's in the show.

I have a gripe about the Star Trek mugs...
Picard's teacup is a delicate, fragile little thing held by a strip of plastic and a dream. That thin glass will break if you look at it sideways. And where do they put that ridiculous tiny cup? On the Enterprise, which is always being dragged into conflict
Tumblr media
The DS9 raktajino mugs are hefty, wide-based things that are meant to not tip over. They're called no-spill mugs. They have a foam piece on the bottom so they don't slip. They're incredibly sturdy – meant for ships and traveling! Where do they put them? At the station, which is arguably the most stable place they could be cause DS9 rarely gets knocked about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Far as I'm concerned, Janeway's the only one doing practical space mugs correctly. Come on, a metal travel mug that's as strong as her coffee is black? Takes a beating through 70,000 light years of bridge shakes fighting off the Borg and the Hirogen and still holds a hot drink? Now that's a space mug

The thing about the fandom’s interpretation of Data and Pulaski is that it makes both characters extremely flat and boring while also erasing their whole relationship. Data’s made into this flawless, naive baby that can’t defend himself (when he does - when Pulaski mispronounces his name, he tells her exactly why she should pronounce it correctly), while Pulaski is an ugly bitch-hag who is morally reprehensible. Most fanfics portray Data as being uncomfortable or scared of her, while Pulaski’s chomping at the bit to break him into parts. Their whole relationship in season two is based around the fact they both have flaws, and that Data is still learning about what exactly he is capable of as an android.
In “Elementary, My Dear Data”, the big question of the episode is if Data can solve a narrative mystery without it being based on his knowledge of the original stories. Geordi doesn’t know the answer. Pulaski doesn’t. Data doesn’t. From what they know of Data, Pulaski outright dismisses the possibility that Data can, which sparks the episode’s plot.
So when Geordi goes back later and prompts the computer to alter the program to be more challenging, both Data and Pulaski are excited! They want to see where this goes! They are openly having fun with this.
Tumblr media
In her first episode, Pulaski dismissed Data when he tried to stay during Troi’s labour, and only relented when Troi said she wanted him there. But by “Penpals”, she assures Sarjenka that Data will be at her side the whole time. When Data expresses doubts, she assures him that this is what’s best for Sarjenka, but that his memories of her will still be important. This is also the same episode where Pulaski defends both her and Data’s personal involvement in the situation to Worf.
Tumblr media
In “Measure of A Man”, the game opens with some of the crew playing a poker game. Data and Pulaski are obviously friendly and comfortable enough to socialize together outside of professional circumstances. And again, the scene shows Data calling the game simplistic and assuming he will win, but he turns out to be wrong.
Tumblr media
Later in “Peak Performance”, Pulaski sets up Data to compete in Strategema, only for him to end up losing, to everyone’s surprise. The reason why Data’s confidence falls is because he had the exact same assumption about his computational abilities as Pulaski. They were both wrong! When she sees how much losing has affected him, she apologizes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Data says that he must be malfunctioning. It’s not until Picard tells him that failure can happen even when you do everything right that Data accepts he can make mistakes - and that making mistakes is okay! By the end of the episode, they both know that Data is not infallible, and that he can be affected by failure as much as any human.
Pulaski makes assumptions and mistakes, and so does Data. They learn and grow from them, and their relationship is overall a very positive one despite their very different personalities. It’s an interesting dynamic that gets rewritten by fans entirely, despite the fact that it’s weirdly one of the more developed dynamics in the show.

Jim likes to pick up Spock after work at the Embassy. Sometimes, they drop by the store on their way home and get some wine for the evening. Jim is always so excited to finally see Spock after a long day of work, that he blabs the whole way home, while Spock silently listens, responding with occasional "hms" and "indeeds". Spock will never admit it but walking home from work with Jim is his favourite part of the day.

and you know what, it pisses me off when these dipshits are critiquing data's poetry and they're all like, "oh its too technical, its not emotional enough" fucking shocker? that it sounds like it was written by the guy that wrote it?? "it isnt deeply connected to you" or whatever, like ?? oh the guy writes a poem (first time btw like damn) that is technical and unemotional, when he struggles with seeing himself as technical and unemotional, and thats not connected to him?? god forbid he use poetry to process his thoughts and identity like the rest of us and you dont happen to like it, fuck off

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately talking about how no one comments/reblogs/replies/etc anymore, and, as someone who comments regularly on a lot of fanworks, it sometimes makes me wonder if my efforts are worth anything. Then I remember how much happiness I get from comments on my own work/posts and how much the community of fandom can matter, and I remember the power that can be found in spreading joy instead of disappointment.
So -- to everyone who comments on fanfiction: thank you. You make the writing process worthwhile and so very rewarding. You make people happy every day.
To all the people who reblog art and gifsets and meta and anything else with enthusiastic tags: thank you. You make people smile and promote interesting conversations and make being on Tumblr so much more fun.
To anyone who sends people asks about their works, whether it's unprompted or part of an ask game: thank you. You give people reasons to talk about things they love and feel like a part of a community.
To the people who makes reclists: thank you. You give us more to read while showing the author how much their work is loved and appreciated, benefitting so many people.
To everyone who organizes events and groups and blogs and dedicated to fandom: thank you. You build community and love and excitement so effectively and it's wonderful.
To all the authors and artists who respond to comments and build community: thank you. You make people smile with your work and then again with your response.
To everyone who contributes to fandom and community in all the other beautiful, varied ways that I can't even begin to list: thank you. You are why we're here.
And, finally, to every writer, visual artist, gifmaker, cosplayer, maker of edits, writer of meta, or creator of art in any other form: thank you. Your work is wonderful and you make fandom what it is, regardless of who sees your art or how much response you recieve.
Keep going, everyone. You are a part of something beautiful.

i just don’t see what the snw writers goal is at all
like what is the point of writing a prequel that’s almost entirely negated by the source material you based it off of?
what is the point of creating random love interests and ‘character development’ for spock when it makes no sense with his tos character development?
like logically i know that paramount just wants a cash cow and that’s why they try and use already well liked characters while canceling shows people actually liked before they even got a chance to thrive just because they weren’t making enough money
but it still makes no sense to me that in a well established fandom with so much source material to choose from they still decided to write nearly unrecognizable versions of characters that people have loved for decades
star trek fans will watch any star trek show you write, please just make new characters instead of whatever this is

The decision to make most of the bridge crew women in SNW is so interesting for Spock’s background specifically. He’s just starting to explore humanity and he’s surrounded by all of these women who are supporting each other in very feminine ways.
And Jim, with his dad away, was raised predominantly by Winona. Sweet bookish Jim without any friends and who just wants to help people. Jim who watched his mom constantly chasing the man she loves around the quadrant, pining and lonely. Yeah he’s gonna be pretty feminine in his pining for love and affection too.
It makes sense that later on Spock and Jim are seen as maybe being romantic with one another because think about how women express friendship and love compared to men.
We give gifts just because we saw something they might like or in their favorite color. We talk about our day and talk shit about all the people we don’t like. We hype each other up when our bestie is wearing a great outfit and will tell them if their boobs look amazing. We share clothes and makeup and jewelry. How many women have a matching piece to something a friend owns? A friendship bracelet? A BFF necklace?
Even Pike behaves in a very traditionally feminine way, hosting dinner parties and teaching Spock how to cook the human way. Now Spock is learning that this is how humans show love.
But men aren’t allowed to do those things openly with just anyone. And especially not towards people they aren’t dating, their superior officer, or subordinates.
But Spock and Jim don’t care because they finally have someone who lets them enjoy this without it being weird. It’s seen as romantic because men are only allowed to express love in a feminine way when it’s directed towards a love interest.
And maybe they are romantic and getting it on. That probably doesn’t help the rumors.
