self-quarantine activities
1. Complete a puzzle: The more pieces the better! Feeling extra saucy? Take on a Rubik's Cube. More of a word person? Crossword puzzle!
2. Start a journal or blog. Sure, it can be about the coronavirus, but it could also be about a specific interest from chess to cheese.
3. If it won't bother your neighbors: Dust off that old instrument and practice.
4. Text all your exes just in case you have one more thing you wanted to get off your chest.
5. Write poetry. Perhaps you can craft a haiku for Mother's Day, or something without a specific structure. Just try it!
6. Watch all the really long movies you’ve avoided until now.
7. Download Duolingo, or a similar app, and teach yourself a foreign language.
8. Finally read “Infinite Jest,” “Les Miserables” or even “The Stand.” Go all in and read “Ulysses.” You got this.
9. Meditate. Try lying down with your eyes closed, palms up and while focusing on your breath. Or spend 20 minutes sitting crosslegged and repeat a soothing word to yourself in your head. (The latter is more like transcendental meditation.)
10. Face masks, moisturizer, oh my! Treat yourself to a 10-step skin care routine you don’t have time for during a normal work week.
11. Look at pictures of puppies.
12. Put together the most attractive charcuterie board possible, but you can only use foods you already have in your fridge and cupboard.
13. Take note from "Tangled" star Rapunzel, who has an entire song about how she's spent her days alone in a castle. Activities included in her ditty: Ventriloquy, candle-making, papier-mâché and adding a new painting to her gallery.
14. Write actual letters to family and friends. After that? Write thank-you notes to service people who you remember went out of their way for you.
15. Learn calligraphy. YouTube can help.
16. Finally read the rules to those long and intense board games you've never played with the family. Encourage the family to play.
17. Put on a soap opera. Mute the sound. Create your own dialogue.
18. Have a space in your home where all of the tupperware goes? Organize it and actually match lids to containers.
19. Try on all your clothes and determine whether they “spark joy” á la Marie Kondo.
20. Better yet, go through this process with your junk drawer and supply shelves.
21. Have a roommate meeting about how to be more considerate of one other, especially while you will likely be spending more time together. Bring baked goods.
22. Bake those goods.
23. Watch the films that won Oscars for best picture.
24. Watch films that won Independent Spirit Awards for best picture.
25. Watch films that critics say should have won those aforementioned awards.
26. Read all the New Yorker issues piled on your desk.
27. Will Tom Hanks into recovery from coronavirus by watching every Tom Hanks movie chronologically.
28. Knit or crochet.
29. Use Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Marco Polo to video chat with your long-distance friends.
30. Try out at-home aerobics or yoga videos. Consider downloading a fitness app with curated workout playlists.
31. Look at yourself in the mirror. Attempt a self portrait with pencil and paper.
32. Take a bubble bath (bonus: Add a glass of wine).
33. Make a classic cocktail, from negronis to Manhattans and aperol spritzes. Don't forget the garnish.
34. Coloring books: They’re not just for kids.
35. Take time to reflect: What have you accomplished in the last year? What goals are you setting for yourself in the next year?
36. Write a short story or get started on that novel.
37. Actually try to reproduce something you see on Pinterest. Probably fail. Try again.
38. Clear out the family room and camp indoors with all blankets, popcorn and scary movies.
39. Finally get around to fixing that broken door knob and loose tile or cleaning scuffed up walls.
40. Acquire a foam roller and treat yourself to some physical therapy.
41. Pretend you're 13 years old and fold a square piece of paper into a fortune teller you put your thumbs and pointer fingers into. Proceed to tell fortunes.
42. Learn how to braid (fishtail, French, etc.) via YouTube tutorial..
43. Throw out all your too-old makeup and products. (Tip: most liquid products have a small symbol on them noting expirations, usually six months to a year. This includes sunscreen!)
44. Interview your grandparents (over the phone, of course) and save the audio. Can you create an audio story or book with that file?
45. Go through your camera roll, pick your favorite pics from the past year and make a photo book or order framed versions online.
46. Go on a health kick and learn how to cook new recipes with ingredients you may not be using already, from miso to tahini.
47. Create a Google document of shows or movies you’re watching and share it among family and friends.
48. Make a list of things for which you are grateful.
49. Have your own wine tasting of whatever bottles you have at home. Make up stories about the journey of the grapes to your mouth.
50. Work on your financial planning, such as exploring whether to refinance your loan or ways to save more money.
51. Perfect grandma’s bolognese recipe.
52. Make coffee, but this time study how many beans you use, which types, how hot the water is, how long it brews and whether any of that makes a difference.
53. Buy gift cards from your favorite local businesses to help keep them in business while we quarantine.
54. Watch “Frozen 2,’ which went up early on Disney Plus. Another new movie on the streaming service: "Stargirl."
55. Write a book with your family. Pick a character and each member writes a chapter about their adventures. Read aloud to each other.
56. No March Madness? Have a Scrabble tournament. Or Bananagrams. Pictionary, anyone?
57. Get into baking with "The Great British Baking Show," but your technical challenge is baking something with the ingredients you have on hand (that you didn't already use in the charcuterie board).
58. Indoor scavenger hunt.
59. Alternate reading the Harry Potter series with your kids and cap each one off with the movie.
60. Dye your hair a new color. No one else needs to see it if you don't like it.
61. Read Robert Jordan’s 14-book “Wheel of Time” series before it streams on Amazon starring Rosamund Pike.
62. Write a play starring your loved ones. Perform it via a video call app.
63. Go viral in the good way by making a quarantine-themed TikTok.
64. Rearrange your sock drawer. Really.
65. Stop procrastinating and do your income taxes.
66. Make lists of all the museums, sporting events and concerts you want to visit when they finally reopen.
67. Get into comics with digital subscriptions on your tablet, like Marvel Unlimited.
68. Rearrange your furniture to make it seem like your home is a totally different space.
69. Practice shuffling playing cards like a Poker dealer. Be ready for employment opportunities once all casinos open back up.

71. Teach your dog to shake. Hand sanitizer optional.
72. Memorize the periodic table. You never know when that will come in handy.

76. Learn a new style of dance via YouTube, from bellydancing to breaking.
77. Update or write your will and organize your affairs. Yes, it sounds melodramatic and morbid but let’s face it: This is a task many of us avoid because we never have the time. Now we do.

94. Study the art of beatboxing.
95. Try moving in super-slow motion. It's OK to laugh at regular speed.

One Day at a Time
Shelagh has big plans for the summer but Patrick has other ideas...
I hope you like this.
One Day at a Time
Shelagh had been so excited to be discharged from St Cuthbert’s.  She had plans for the summer.  Firstly a gradual return to work and then getting the flat sorted for the little one.  Her plans were short lived however as she discovered when she walked into the living room of the flat.  The sofa was made up with cushions and an eiderdown.  A small table by the sofa was home to stack of magazines.  Shelagh knew that she would need to take it easy but bed rest at home was going to be a challenge.  There were too many things to do for a start.  She had been absent from the flat for over a month and although Patrick had assured her it was clean and tidy, she knew her standards were different to his.  Shelagh decided that after a few days he would relent and then she could be up and about getting on with things.
A week later Shelagh was still on bed rest on the sofa and Patrick had firmly explained that she wasn’t going anywhere or doing anything for at least another fortnight probably more likely a month.  Shelagh had picked up a well-thumbed copy of Woman’s Realm and began reading an article about hosiery.  The main points being about the choice between stockings and suspenders or garters versus the all in one tights.  Shelagh read with interest even though she didn’t really have an opinion on the subject.  Thin nylon stockings and suspenders were certainly easier to wear than black woollen stockings and garters and she’d heard Trixie extolling the virtues of tights, at least as a being a practical garment for work.  When she got to the end of the article, Shelagh put down the magazine with a sigh.  It was a way to pass the time but she would much rather be out in the summer sunshine taking Angela to the park or watching Timothy play cricket than stuck on a sofa indoors.
A kick reminded her of why she was sofa-bound for the summer.  She stroked her bump fondly.  It was when her baby kicked that she thought of Gloria.  Shelagh hadn’t known what it felt like to feel her baby move but Gloria’s description was perfect.  As each day passed her baby grew and became stronger and made its presence felt.  Her experience was quickly surpassing Gloria’s and it was hard not to feel sorrow for her friend.  Shelagh prayed for Gloria and for her lost babies.  She prayed that one day her friend would find hope and joy and her arms would not be empty.
Shelagh carefully shifted herself onto her side and removed her glasses.  She yawned and let her eyes close.  She hadn’t slept this much since the sanatorium but guessed that it was lack of occupation that made her so tired.  Shelagh slept soundly in the quiet of the flat.  Timothy was out with his friends, most likely playing cricket in the park.  Angela had gone to tea at Nonnatus where she would be thoroughly spoilt and wouldn’t want any dinner as she would be too full up on cake.  Shelagh’s sleep was disturbed by a hand stroking her hair and a kiss to her forehead.  She opened her eyes to see Patrick smiling at her.  She reached up her head to kiss him and heard his barely audible sigh.  She knew exactly what that sigh meant.  Bed rest meant rest not lazy days enjoying each other.  She liked cuddling up next to him when she slept but she missed the moments of greater intimacy.  She missed his physicality and knew from his gentle kisses that he was holding himself back.  It was like a bizarre form of courtship but one where each of them knew the other intimately and the restraint was hard for them to bear.
A month later and Shelagh was fed up of Woman’s Realm, fed up of looking at the living room walls and fed up of idleness.  If she had another day of lying on the sofa watching the dust motes in the shafts of sunlight and then seeing them settle, she knew she would go mad.   The other day Angela had brought her flowers and Patrick her breakfast on a tray.  She had once again broached the subject of getting up but Patrick had told her it was still too soon.  Timothy had returned to school now and the summer holidays were over.  Six weeks now and that didn’t include the month at St Cuthbert’s.
Another week or so passed and Shelagh knew she was fine.  Her bump was now so much larger than it had been.  Her baby moved frequently and had a good strong heartbeat.  She had begun to gently potter round the flat but the accumulation of possessions seemed to have grown exponentially in the last three months.  The flat that had seemed so spacious was now cramped and overflowing.  It was time for the family to move to a new place but Shelagh knew that however practical, Patrick would be reluctant.  This was the only home Timothy had ever known and even though he would be off to university in a few years, he had been through so much in such a short time.  Both children sharing a room was a temporary measure that didn’t work for either child.
Patrick was in the bathroom helping Angela brush her teeth, so Shelagh seized her moment.  She had brushed her hair so it shone and she knew she looked the picture of health.  Shelagh waxed lyrical about her increased energy levels and how well she felt.  Timothy’s arrival couldn’t have been more timely even if Shelagh had scripted it herself.  His complaint of yet another lost item was the perfect cue to bring up the subject of moving.  She sensed Patrick’s reluctance to dwell on the issue and was surprised when he deflected that particular conversation to a later date by agreeing that she should return to work.
Shelagh couldn’t wait to get into her nurse’s uniform and Patrick looked relieved that she was back by his side at the surgery.  He kept giving her concerned looks but Shelagh knew that the bloom of pregnancy was truly upon her.   She felt so energised and that evening she surprised Patrick with just how much energy she had.  Wisely he didn’t complain but she knew he was delighted with her return to health now their baby was safely out of danger.  Nearly three months on bed rest had been a trial but it was worth it for a healthy baby.  Shelagh smiled at the low rumbling snores that emanated from Patrick’s chest as she snuggled up against him.  She hoped this burst of energy would last a long time and Patrick wouldn’t find her increased appetites too tiring for him.

18 Ku / Work on what has been destroyed ( Decay) Changing to 32 Heng / Duration
March 17, 2019 Sunrise Waxing Moon St. Patrick's Day Question: What does Earth need most to be healed at this time? 18 Ku / Work on what has been destroyed ( Decay) Changing to 32 Heng / Duration Cast Hexagram
Tumblr media
18 Ku / Work on what has been destroyed (Decay) https://ichingfortune.com/hexagrams/18.php Above Ken Keeping Still, Mountain Below Sun the Gentle, Wind Introduction The Chinese character ku represents a bowl in whose contents worms are breeding. This means decay. It is come about because the gentle indifference in the lower trigram has come together with the rigid inertia of the upper, and the result is stagnation. Since this implies guilt, the conditions embody a demand for removal of the cause. Hence the meaning of the hexagram is not simply 'what has been spoiled' but 'work on what has been spoiled'. Judgement Work on what has been spoiled Has supreme success. It furthers one to cross the great water; Before the starting point, three days. After the starting point, three days. Judgement Commentary What has been spoiled through man's fault can be made good again through man's work. It is not immutable fate, as in the time of Standstill, that has caused the state of corruption, but rather the abuse of human freedom. Work toward improving conditions promises well, because it accords the possibilities of the time. We must not recoil from work and danger-symbolized by crossing of the great water-but must take hold energetically. Success depends, however, on proper deliberation. This is expressed by the lines, Before the starting point, three days. After the starting point, three days. We must first know the cause of corruption before we can do away with them; hence it is necessary to be cautious during the time before the start. Then we must see to it that the new way is safely entered upon, so that a relapse may be avoided; therefore we must pay attention to the time after the start. Decisiveness and energy must take the place of inertia and indifference that have led to decay, in order that the ending may be followed by a new beginning. The Image The wind blows low on the mountain: The image of Decay. Thus the superior man stirs up the people and strengthens their spirit. Image Commentary When the wind blows slow on the mountain, it is thrown back and spoils the vegetation. This contains a challenge to improvement. It is the same with debasing attitudes and fashions; they corrupt human society. His methods likewise must be derived from the two trigrams, but in such a way that their effects unfold in orderly sequence. The superior must first remove stagnation by stirring up public opinion, as the wind stirs up everything, and must strengthen and tranquilize the character of the people, as the mountain gives tranquillity and nourishment to all that grows in its vicinity. Changing Lines (4, 6) Six in the fourth place means: Tolerating what has been spoiled by the father. In continuing one sees humiliation. This shows the situation of someone too weak to take measures against decay that has its roots in the past and is just beginning to manifest itself. It is allowed to run its course. If this continues, humiliation will result. Six in the fifth place means: Setting right what has been spoiled by the father. One meets with praise. An individual is confronted with corruption originating from neglect in former times. He lacks the power to ward it off alone, but with able helpers he can at least bring about a thorough reform, if he cannot create a new beginning, and this also is praiseworthy. Transformed Hexagram 32 Heng / Duration https://ichingfortune.com/hexagrams/32.php Above Chen, the Arousing, Thunder Below Sun, the Gentle, Wind Introduction The strong trigram Chen is above, the weak trigram Sun below. This hexagram is the inverse of the preceding one. In the latter we have influence, here we have union as an enduring condition. The two images are thunder and wind, which are likewise constantly paired phenomena. The lower trigram indicates gentleness within; the upper, movement without. In the sphere of social relationships, the hexagram represents the institution of marriage as the enduring union of the sexes. During courtship the young man subordinates himself to the girl, but in marriage, which is represented by the coming together of the eldest son and the eldest daughter, the husband is the directing and moving force outside, while the wife, inside, is gentle and submissive. Judgement Duration. Success. No blame. Perseverance furthers. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. Judgement Commentary Duration is a state whose movement is not worn down by hindrances. It is not a state of rest, for mere standstill is regression. Duration is rather the self-contained and therefore self-renewing movement of an organized, firmly integrated whole, taking place in accordance with immutable laws and beginning anew at every ending. The end is reached by an inward movement, by inhalation, systole, contraction, and this movement turns into a new beginning, in which the movement is directed outward, in exhalation, diastole, expansion. Heavenly bodies exemplify duration. They move in their fixed orbits, and because of this their light-giving power endures. The seasons of the year follow a fixed law of change and transformation, hence can produce effects that endure. So likewise the dedicated man embodies an enduring meaning in his way of life, and thereby the world is formed. In that which gives things their duration, we can come to understand the nature of all beings in heaven and on earth. The Image Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. Thus the superior man stands firm and does not change has direction. Image Commentary Thunder rolls, and the wind blows; both are examples of extreme mobility and so are seemingly the very opposite of duration, but the laws governing their appearance and subsidence, their coming and going, endure. In the same way the independence of the superior man is not based on rigidity and immobility of character. He always keeps abreast of the time and changes with it. What endures is the unswerving directive, the inner law of his being, which determines all his actions.

Talisman Jewelry: Symbols of Love, Luck & Good Fortune
Talisman jewelry has been worn for centuries, as a means of protection, luck, good fortune, and much more. Also known as amulets, totems, or good luck charms, talismans are worn to project one’s present feelings, as well as their hopes for the future. Whether you seek wealth, love, success, or something else, there’s a piece of talisman jewelry that’s ideal for you!
Types of Talisman Jewelry
When it comes to types of talisman jewelry, there’s no shortage of unique symbols to choose from. Drawing influence from wildlife, world currency, and even the cosmos, talismans often have spiritual significance to a variety of cultures. The following are some of the most well-known talismans and their meanings:
Bees
Honeybees are a remarkable species, responsible for pollinating the majority of crops we rely on for food. From apples to almonds, bees help plants to grow and reproduce, making them incredibly important for sustaining the cycle of life. These industrious insects have appeared in artwork for centuries, such as tapestries, architecture, and even fine jewelry. Bees are also commonly associated with royalty, thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte of France, who named them an imperial symbol during the 19th century. Evidence of Napoleon’s admiration for these crafty creatures can be found in personal portraits of the emperor. For his coronation day, Napoleon wore magnificent red robes adorned with gold bees. And in a separate portrait by Jacques-Louis David, you might spot a gilt chair covered in fabric that’s bedecked with buzzing bees. An everlasting emblem of hard work and cooperation, bees make an excellent choice to wear as talisman jewelry. Wear with you to school, work, or wherever else you may be tasked to work as a team.
Elephants
Besides being downright adorable, elephants symbolize wisdom and lots of luck. In Hindu culture, the elephant god, Ganesh, is celebrated for delivering good fortune, abundance, and clearing one’s path of unwanted obstacles. These magnificent mammals have long served as a symbol in talisman jewelry, bestowing the bearer with favorable qualities like strength and honor. Do you have a loved one graduating or embarking on a new career? Give them the gift of good luck with a charming elephant ring or pendant.
The Evil Eye
Prominent in Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and Hindu cultures, the evil eye is one of history’s best recognized talismans. The sinister stare of the evil eye is said to protect its wearer from the malicious glares of envious enemies, and the harm they wish to inflict. Evil eye talismans are classified as apotropaic, Greek for prophylactic, which means to protect or turn away. When misery or suffering is cast upon its wearer, the evil eye will reflect malevolence back to the one wishing harm. Though the evil eye means something slightly different to each culture, it’s universally accepted as a cursed symbol intended to bring wickedness to one’s life. Shield yourself from the stress and negative energy of others with a priceless piece of evil eye talisman jewelry.
The Hamsa Hand
You’ve surely seen jewelry in the shape of an open hand, better known as the hamsa. Similar to the evil eye, the hamsa protects its wearer from the evil glances and ill wishes of others. In Islam, the symbol is known as the Hand of Fatima, and in Christian and Jewish cultures, it’s referred to as the Hand of Miriam. While commonly called the hamsa hand, you may also see it spelled hamesh, chamsa, or khamsa. Hamsa hand jewelry can take on different meanings, depending on how it’s worn. When the hand is worn facing upwards, it’s a sign to ward off evil. However, when worn facing down, the hamsa hand inspires abundance, good fortune, and exciting opportunities. It’s even believed that a hamsa with the fingers pointed downward is a talisman for fertility. Hamsa hand jewelry makes a treasured talisman for someone seeking safety on a new adventure, or those wishing to welcome a child in the near future.
The Moon & Stars
Celestial-inspired jewelry is arguably one of the most enduring talisman trends, with a variety of different meanings. People have long looked to the moon and stars for insight about themselves, and for guidance through life’s inevitable challenges. Earth’s moon is in a constant state of change, alternating between various phases. So, it’s no wonder it’s recognized as a symbol of rebirth and regeneration, embodying the ever-changing cycles of life. During the Victorian era, it was common for newly engaged couples to receive crescent moon jewelry, as a representation of their love “waxing” into something even more deep and devout. The moon specifically is said to embody a fierce feminine power, and is even revered as a divine female deity in civilizations passed. Celebrate the woman that inspires you most with a gift that’s out of this world, such as a delicate moon pendant or star stud earrings that sparkle like the night’s sky.
Wishbones
Most people are familiar with the age old tradition of breaking a wishbone for luck. This custom dates back to early Etruscan cultures in Italy, and is intended to inspire fertility, prosperity, and all-around good fortune. When you break the wishbone, whoever breaks off the bigger piece is thought to reap the rewards. However, wishbones in their complete form are still quite lucky, and actually inspired the phrase “get a lucky break.” Wearing a wishbone encourages endless possibility, and hope for the future. For this reason, wishbone jewelry is the perfect choice for a loved one beginning a new career, or uprooting to a new home.
Four-Leaf Clovers
Few symbols are as synonymous with good luck as the four-leaf clover. Considered the ultimate lucky charm, the four-leafed clover is hallmark of Irish culture, and often attributed to St. Patrick’s Day. The symbol is said to embody many meanings, with each of the four leaves representing either faith, hope, love, or luck. With a 1 in 10,000 chance of discovering a four-leaf clover of your own, you’re better off opting for a precious piece of talisman jewelry instead. One of the most beloved clover jewelry collections belongs to renowned luxury retailer, Van Cleef & Arpels, and is known as the Alhambra collection. Glamorous Hollywood icon, Grace Kelly, was a famous fan of the Alhambra collection, and was known to wear several pieces at a time. Shroud yourself or a loved one in strength, courage, and hope with the help of a piece of four-leafed clover jewelry!
Coins
Coins are a popular centerpiece for pendants, rings, and bracelets alike. One might assume that wearing coins is simply intended to bring the wearer wealth, but really, they represent so much more. During Queen Victoria’s reign, a new tradition was established of gifting brides-to-be with a coin to ensure a happy marriage filled with love and luck. In fact, many people don’t know that the expression “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” actually ends with the final line, “…and a sixpence in her shoe.” Coin jewelry is often modeled after ancient currency, like that of the Greeks or Romans. Believed to bring security, abundance, and lots of luck to their wearer, coin jewelry makes an excellent gift for weddings, or to celebrate a career milestone.

The Ancient Pagan Origin of Easter. Cr. Ancient Origins
“When he [Herod] had apprehended him [Peter], he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.” —Acts 12:4
THE SEASON OF THE YEAR during which these events took place was springtime. Peter’s apprehension and imprisonment by King Herod coincided with the established Jewish festival of Passover. Herod, in recognition of Jewish religious custom, would wait until the celebration was over before he acted further upon Peter’s fate. The scriptural reference to the ‘four quaternions of soldiers’ whose responsibility was to guard Peter, points to the manner in which the Roman military watch system and confinement was carried out. The nocturnal hours were customarily divided into four periods of watches—evening: 6:00 P.M.-9:00 P.M.; midnight: 9:00 P.M.-12:00 P.M.; cockcrowing: 12:00 P.M.-3:00 A.M.; and morning: 3:00 A.M.-6:00 A.M. (Mark 13:35) Each watch committed four soldiers to stand guard over the prisoner, and as indicated in the scriptural context (Acts 12:3-11), the record states that Peter was chained to one soldier on one side of him, and another one on the opposite side, while the remaining two men stood guard at the doorway. Peter’s subsequent and miraculous deliverance from this imposing scene is astounding in its detail, and is powerful evidence of God’s mighty power exercised in the life of Peter, one of the twelve apostles. Furthermore, this drama all took place during the festive Jewish time of Passover.
A MISTRANSLATION
The occurrence of the term ‘Easter,’ as used in this only instance where the word is found in our common English Bible, is a mistranslation of the Greek word Pascha. The word Pascha should properly have been translated ‘Passover’ [Strong’s Bible Concordance, New Testament word #3957, Pascha—the festival of Passover]. It has been correctly translated Passover in most modern translations of the Bible. The corresponding word in the Hebrew Old Testament is Strong’s #6453, Pecach—also defined as Passover.
EASTER SUNDAY
Easter Sunday is one of the most sacred of all Christian holidays, and is celebrated throughout many parts of the world. It is a long-established and principal religious observance within Christian churches that have generally adopted Easter Sunday as the resurrection day, and the proper time to celebrate the raising of Jesus Christ from the grave. This was established by early church leaders as having taken place on a Sunday, the third day after Jesus was crucified, which they regarded as having occurred on the previous Friday, which was termed ‘Good Friday.’ Having thus authenticated Sunday as the day this event should be celebrated, Christian influences further led to the change in the observance of the Sabbath. Sunday became the adopted Sabbath Day instead of Saturday, which had previously been observed according to the scriptural record.
EVOLUTION OF PAGAN TRADITIONS
The celebration of Easter brings together many various ancient traditions and associations between those of Christian faith and the otherwise unrelated origins in pagan religions. The festival is essentially a convergence of several very old pagan and Christian customs, as well as some from Hebrew origin. Easter takes its name from Ishtar, the Babylonian and Assyrian goddess of love and fertility. The Phoenicians also knew her as Astarte, a sister and consort of Baal, a god worshipped in many parts of the eastern world. Some of the ancient Hebrews also worshipped Baal.
These ancient traditions gradually spread throughout Europe, and ‘Eostre’ [with variations in spelling] became the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, emphasizing fertility and the rising sun. The month of April was dedicated to her, and the Old English word for Easter was ‘Eastre’ which refers to Eostre. The festival of Eostre was celebrated at the vernal equinox, when day and night receive an equal share of light and darkness.
During the early Middle Ages, Christian missionaries seeking to convert the barbaric tribes of northern Europe realized that the time of Jesus’ death and resurrection also coincided with the Teutonic springtime celebrations. The Teutonic goddess of fertility was known as ‘Ostare,’ whose name was derived from the ancient word for spring. As the days of approaching spring grew longer, celebrations that coincided with the spring equinox emphasized the end of winter and a rebirth of nature. It was seen as the triumph of life over death. The Christian missionaries taught that it also pointed to the resurrection of Jesus.
EASTER EGGS
Colored eggs have been used since ancient times as a symbol of Easter, and are associated with the arrival of spring. Eggs symbolize birth, fertility, and a new life in many cultures. Eggs were used by the ancient Egyptians and Persians who colored them and gave them as gifts during their springtime festivals.
Later, during the Middle Ages, Europeans collected eggs of different colors that were taken from the nests of various birds, and used as charms to avert evil and to otherwise bring good fortune. This originally involved searching through the woods for the eggs, and this custom gradually evolved into the Easter egg hunt. The painting of eggs eventually became more popular and in time replaced the search for wild bird eggs. These colorful eggs were later hidden and children as well as others would search for them. Eggs were painted in bright colors to resemble the sun, the arrival of spring and fertility. Easter baskets, in which the eggs were collected, were intended to resemble bird’s nests.
One of the most elaborate Easter egg traditions appears to have originated in eastern Europe. Long ago Polish and Ukrainian people celebrated the arrival of spring, and the resurrection day, by decorating their eggs with many traditional symbols for Easter, many of them with religious representations. This custom was called ‘Pysanky’ [meaning to write or design], when eggs were meticulously painted with elaborate decorations featuring countless and intricate designs. They were created by carefully applying wax in various patterns to an egg. The egg was then dyed, wax would be reapplied to preserve the color, and the egg was boiled which resulted in a variety of multicolored, striped, or patterned eggs. Popular decorations may be found in many different regions of Poland and Ukraine with geometric patterns, or floral designs, that are specific to the particular community. This custom is still popular in these eastern regions of Europe.
THE EASTER BUNNY
Rabbits [hares] have also served as fertility symbols in some ancient cultures.
Legends from ancient Egypt connected the rabbit with the moon because of their nocturnal feeding habits. This association with the moon is also thought to have originated with those who watched the cycles of the moon to determine the precise date of the approaching change of season, and the accompanying celebration. This event took place on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.
It appears that hares have been used as symbols for a very long time. The first documented use of their being used for the Easter festival took place in Germany during the 1500’s. This custom later evolved into edible Easter bunnies that were especially prepared with pastry and sugar. These traditions apparently made their way to America during the 1700’s by the Pennsylvania Dutch who had immigrated from Germany. During the years following the American Civil War, handcrafted chocolate Easter eggs and rabbits became increasingly popular.
THE EASTER PARADE
One of the most colorful Easter Sunday parades in the United States dates back to the mid 1800’s when New York City hosted the grand event. At that time, many wealthy people who were a part of the social elite class would attend Easter services at one of the fashionable Fifth Avenue churches, such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Afterward, they would parade down the famous avenue in their elaborate carriages to provide onlookers, as well as each other, an opportunity to view the newest Easter bonnets and other stylish clothing. Spectators would crowd along the curbs to see the latest trends in fashion. The celebration became a combination of religious services honoring the resurrection day of our Lord Jesus, as well as to view firsthand the wardrobes of the very wealthy.
Come rain or shine, the parade has been a popular event throughout the years ever since. In 1948, the songwriter Irving Berlin memorialized New York’s Easter celebration in the musical “The Easter Parade,” which featured the hit song that became popular worldwide. While there is still an element of style in the present scene, the modern version of the Easter parade tends to be even more spectacular. The parade may now include live birds nesting in bonnets of real flowers.
EASTER SEALS
The Easter Seal organization was originally set up with the plan to help individuals with disabilities and special needs, and their families, to address these difficult challenges and to achieve certain goals to better their lives. In 1907, an Ohio businessman lost his son in a streetcar accident because of inadequate available services. As a result, the man sold his business and began a fundraising campaign to build a hospital in his hometown. Later, his work was expanded to provide exclusive services for crippled children. The concept of the ‘Easter Seal’ came about in 1934. Seal campaigns were established to raise money to improve and expand their various services. To show their support for the organization, donors placed these Easter Seals on envelopes and letters. In 1952, the lily, a symbol of spring, was officially incorporated as the Easter Seal logo for its association with resurrection and new life, and it has appeared on the seals ever since.
HEBREW CUSTOMS
In our featured text (Acts 12:4), concerning Peter’s imprisonment at the time of Passover (mistranslated Easter), our attention is drawn to the relationship between the Easter festival with that of the Hebrew Passover. Passover also coincides with certain pagan traditions as well as Christian celebrations. It is the oldest and most revered festival in Judaism. It is observed during the spring month Nisan, which became the first month of the Jewish religious new year, and is observed according to specific lunar calculation.—Exod.12:2
The Jewish Passover, under the administration of Moses, commemorated the nation of Israel’s ultimate deliverance from centuries of Egyptian bondage, and the passing over of the firstborn of the children of Israel is of great importance. It took place as a result of the final plague which was brought upon Egypt. The plague forced Pharaoh to release the Israelites from a life of compulsory servitude. The Passover is celebrated on an annual basis in accordance with the instructions that were given by God to Moses: “The Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season. In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it. And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the passover.” (Num. 9:1-4) Our Lord Jesus became the antitypical Passover Lamb (John 1:29) when he gave his life as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, during the time of the Jewish Passover.
CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS
Various traditions regarding pagan spring festivals and Jewish law converged with Christian beliefs early in the present Gospel Age. The Easter festival was well-established and accepted by Christians by the second century after Jesus’ death. However, there had been considerable debate between the Eastern and Western divisions of the Church over the exact date the event should be celebrated. The Eastern Church preferred to not hold it as an annual Sunday event, but rather to observe it on whatever day Nisan 14 fell. These early Christians wanted to observe Passover according to the Hebrew Scriptures. The Western Church, on the other hand, wanted to establish Easter Sunday as the annual resurrection day regardless of the date established in Exodus, chapter 12.
To solve the problem, Emperor Constantine called the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325. The question of the Easter date was one of the main issues of concern. After lengthy dispute, the council was unanimous in its decision that Easter should always fall on the Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox. After further discussion, it was decided that March 21st was to be the date for the spring equinox. This dating process has been the general guideline for most of Christendom ever since.
IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME
Students of the Bible stand free from many of the long-standing traditions that have been passed down to us from the past. Their faith is based on the meaning and partaking of the symbolic emblems which represent our Lord Jesus’ sacrificial death. In accordance with the command given to his disciples that night in the upper room to remember his death, his instructions were “This do in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) Every consecrated child of God joyfully accepts this privilege in partaking of the bread which represents Jesus’ flesh which was broken for us, and the drinking of the cup representing his shed blood. This is the true meaning and purpose of observing this most important occasion each year on the 14th day of the first month Nisan.
CHURCH OF THE FIRSTBORN
In his letter to the Hebrew brethren, the Apostle Paul speaks of the “church of the firstborn” whose names are “written in heaven.” (Heb. 12:23) Elsewhere, he explains that they are walking with our Lord in “newness of life.” (Rom. 6:4) They also remember his death, and they solemnly renew their consecrations to God annually by partaking of the meaningful symbols, bread and wine.
To fulfill the type that is recorded in the twelfth chapter of Exodus, the blood of each lamb that was slain in Egypt that night was sprinkled on the doorposts and lintels of the houses of Israel. Each Jewish household thus figuratively becomes the household of faith, and each slain lamb represented the antitypical Lamb of God. The firstborn in each family illustrates the Christ, head and body, the ‘church of the firstborn.’ In the typical picture, the “bitter herbs” and “unleavened bread” that were eaten with the lamb (Exod. 12:8) illustrate the trials and afflictions that will be experienced by the Lord’s people during the present Gospel Age, and foreshadows our participation with our Lord Jesus, and his sacrifice. (I Cor. 10:16,17) Those who are faithful to their High Calling will be privileged to share in the deliverance of the poor groaning creation during Christ’s future kingdom, as proclaimed by the Apostle Paul.—Rom. 8:22,23
CHRIST OUR PASSOVER
The apostle directs our attention to the significance of the Passover type, and our need to purge out all unrighteousness and sin, which is pictured by leaven. In his first letter to the brethren at Corinth, he says, “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”—I Cor. 5:7,8
The slaying of the sacrificial lamb by the Jews, on the 14th day of the first month of the Jewish new year, was the exact time many centuries later when our Lord Jesus, as the antitypical Passover Lamb, died for the sins of the whole world of mankind. All those who presently recognize Jesus as the true Passover Lamb, and have accepted the merit of his shed blood on their behalf, may appropriate the merit of that blood by sprinkling their hearts from a consciousness of evil. Because of their faith in the blood of Jesus, they are privileged to enjoy a new relationship and standing before God.
THE LAMB OF GOD
When John saw Jesus coming toward him, he proclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” (John 1: 29) Later, the Apostle Peter, when comparing earthly riches with the true value of our redemption (I Pet. 1:18), speaks of the exceeding worth of Jesus’ blood of sacrifice, not according to the traditions of old, “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”—vs. 19
God’s wonderful plan of reconciliation for the sins of the whole world will become manifest to all during the Millennial kingdom soon to be established. Thus does the meaning of ‘Christ our Passover’ take on deeper significance when we look forward to the time when the entire human family will praise God for the gift of his beloved Son, the ‘Lamb of God’ that will take away the sins of the world.
