Temari was pregnant on her wedding day: A Naruto Timeline analysis
[usual disclaimer: I love studying canon timeline but no one's headcanons have to be bound to it just do what you like bye]
Note: for simplicity, I gave years numbers, the Kyuubi attack/Naruto's birth are in 2000 and the other dates are based on that
Fact 1: Gaara is at least 20
In Gaara Hidden, one of the councilmen tells Gaara "You've steadily grown, and reached the age of twenty" and Temari and Shikamaru are in the process of choosing their wedding date in this novel as well, so the Wedding has to happen later than that.
We know from the data book that Gaara is from the same school year as Naruto, and born in January, so he is born in January 2001. (In Japan, the school year is from April to March of the next year and the children in the same class are the ones born during the same school year, not civil year. If you want to know why I say that data books are based on school years, not civil years, flick me a request and I will happily do so! Just not here because it'd be too long.)
We can conclude that the wedding is in February 2021 or later.
Fact 2: Shikadai graduates 15 years after the 4th war
There is no indication that I've found in canon material about when the Boruto events happen, but we can read in this interview that Naruto Gaiden happens 15 years after the last chapter of Naruto. (We will have to assume that "last chapter" here means chapter 699, not 700, or else all the new gen has spent 15 years being teenagers at the academy.) Naruto Gaiden opens with Shino telling the class (Shikadai is there) that the graduation exam will be in a week.
The issue here is that chapter 699 happens in October (Minato says happy birthday to Naruto in chapter 691 the same day, and we know from the data books he was born in October) and the graduation is presumably in March (again, that's one the school year ends, and Itachi is also said to graduate "in the springtime" in Itachi Shinden). So it could mean either 15,5 years later, or 14,5 years later.
The 4th War happens in October 2017 (Naruto turns 17 during it, that's the age the data book gives us).
We can conclude that Shikadai graduates either in March 2032 or 2033.
Fact 3: Shikadai graduates at 11
It is the minimum age as per the law (it is said in Itachi Shinden, this law is made shortly before the Rookie 9 graduate: “now that it was a time of peace [...] it was no longer possible to graduate in a short time [...] no matter how talented Sasuke was, he couldn't become a ninja until he was eleven years old”).
It is the age at which all the Rookie 9 graduate (they are said to turn 12 during the first year of naruto and 13 during the second, again, I can give more details about data book ages in another post if needed).
The naruto wiki tells me that the Naruto data book says he is 12 for the Chuunin Exam, but the scan I have of the data book do not seem to indicate any age that I can find?
So this is not 100% a fact that I have found a canon material number about, but it's the most logical possibility (he's not allowed to graduate younger, there's no reason he would graduate older, this is what happened to the previous gen, and this is what the whole fandom seems to believe, so, yeah).
Similarly, everyone seems to agree that his birthday is September 23, I have not found where that comes from yet, but I have to assume it does come from somewhere. If you know please tell me!
[Edit: apparently it comes from a bonus calendar in the Shounen Jump issue 6-7 of 2019 but I haven't found a scan yet.]
We can conclude that Shikadai was born in either September 2020 or 2021, depending on the graduation date.
Conclusion
If Gaara Hiden and the wedding were in 2021, Shikadai cannot have been born in 2020, so he has to be born in September 2021. If we imagine that Gaara Hiden takes place right after Gaara's birthday (the earliest date) and then Temari and Shikamaru got married on the month that followed, Temari would have been 2 months pregnant, and this is the minimum she could have been.
Your honour, they have sinned.

For the ask game…Frost & Embers 😁
I see there’s a new chapter that I’ve got to catch up on too
From this ask:
Sooooo...
As you're familiar with ACOFAE, you know that I like to ramble in the Author's Notes. Consider this an extension of that. You have been warned.
I'm not going to spoil the next chapter for you, but I will say that Summer Solstice is the next big block of chapters coming up.
[rant incoming]
I will never stop kicking myself for not reading further ahead in ACOTAR when I started publishing ACOFAE. I didn't realize until it was too late that Calanmai is based on a real-world holiday that happens in MAY. SJM is not blameless in this, as she implied that Calanmai was the first day of spring, which is in March! There is very little that happens between Calanmai and Summer Solstice, and by little I mean THREE CHAPTERS. And do you know how many days pass during those chapters? SIX. Six days. Holy hell. In chapter 19, right before Calanmai, Feyre notices a warm southern wind blowing, meaning it's now springtime in the mortal lands. Two chapters are spent on Calanmai itself, then six, I repeat, SIX days pass before Feyre wakes to the sound of merry fiddling. Six days, and then it's already Summer Solstice.
What does that have to do with my own beloved Frost and Embers? Not much, except that I realized waaaay too late that I now had three months to fill. I could have gone back and changed that plot detail, but I took it on as a challenge. And it was a challenge.
After struggling to come up with enough things for Feyre to do while Lucien is calling on the other Courts for aid, I realized that I don't have to go into detail on the politics of each and every Court. I saw some advice on the fanfiction subs I frequent (but I can't remember exactly where) that said if you're stuck, just write down some bulleted plot points and keep going. It may not look professional, but considering that this is a hobby project that was only ever supposed to be 20 chapters long, I think you and the other readers would rather get a neat and tidy summary of events than nothing at all [writer's block].
[rant over]
But you didn't ask this question to hear me rant; you want to know what comes next, right?
Well, first, Lucien [redacted], then Feyre [redacted], and then Tamlin [redacted], and... You get the picture. ;)
In all seriousness, by squishing the events of four or five chapters into one summary chapter, you can find out that much sooner how the curse plays out.
I've made it clear from the beginning that Feyre will be going Under the Mountain, though, and I am so excited to get to those chapters! Most of them are pre-written, though I will be editing them to make sure that everything is consistent (considering how much I've changed since starting the fic back in 2021). If all goes well, this story will be wrapping up in about 10-15 more chapters! That sounds like a lot, but it's not. It's really not. And with my luck, the whole story will be 60 chapters long. Because I tend to ramble. *sobs* It was only supposed to be 20 chapters long! *sobs again*
If there's anything else you want to know, my inbox is open! :)

Prompt 28: Modern AU: Bestfriends!Everlark took their shot at being lovers. But Katniss introduced Peeta as her “best friend” to a guy at a party (she was not used to calling him boyfriend yet). He was furious. [submitted by anonymous]
A/N: Hello! So, somehow, this story kind of took a mafia turn, and… I can’t say that I’m upset about it. I kind of tweaked the prompt a bit, in which they’re best friends that become more. But nothing happens until Katniss introduces Peeta as her bodyguard to a guy at a party. [Hint: she totally does it on purpose.] Also, the full version will be posted on AO3. Since I’ve been sick, I was kind of short on time.
Rating: E (Warnings: Dark/ Violent Themes; Age Gap; Possessive language/ behavior)
~~~~~
She’s used to this by now—strange guests in dark suits showing up at her grandfather’s house at all times of the day. Thugs, her nanny calls them one evening before bed. And they are, most of them, often wandering down the halls with a glint of ill intent in their eye.
“You stay in your room when they’re here. Do you understand?” her nanny asks, tucking away the last of Katniss’s toys in the white chest near her dresser.
“Yes, nan.”
Except, that night, she doesn’t listen. The sound of her stomach gurgling drags her out of bed and she sneaks down into the kitchen where Sae scolds her for wandering the halls so late at night.
She’s tiptoeing past her grandfather’s study, hands now full of mini blueberry muffins and a bottle of apple juice, when she hears unfamiliar voices, and… sobbing? Katniss stops, curious, and steps closer to peek through the small slit between the large mahogany doors.
There are two darkly dressed men standing in front of the fire, their rings catching in the warm glow as they gesture toward a hunched shadow behind them. The dim light in the study is barely enough to make out any significant details, but she easily sees the outline of a boy.
He sniffles softly, a muffled sound heard under the voices of the men in the room. Words are spoken quietly, and she strains to catch what they are saying.
“His parents… One of Coin’s men, I believe… What should we—”
She’s jostled from the door by a pair of firm hands, and she stares up into the fierce face of Purnia, her tight updo making the sharp angles of her face more threatening.
“You should be in bed,” is all the tall woman says before escorting her to her room.
~~~~~
Later, Katniss hears them bring the boy to the guest room across the hall. And she waits until she hears the click of their expensive shoes disappear down the hallway before she goes to her door and steps out—two muffins and the bottle of juice in her hands.
Quietly, she tiptoes across the hall to the door that is slightly ajar. She pushes it open, unsurprised to find the boy crying in the corner of the room. When she walks closer, she discovers that he’s an older boy, maybe thirteen or fourteen—a gangly thing with blond, curly hair sticking up around his head and oversized clothes.
He looks up when she steps on a creaky floorboard; his eyes are wide with fright until he realizes that she’s no real threat. Scrawny eight-year-olds aren’t as intimidating as old floorboards, it seems.
Katniss takes him in, now that she can get the full picture of him. And when she looks beyond the baggy clothes, he kind of reminds her of a scrappy character from one of her storybooks.
Except, he doesn’t seem so bad.
Wordlessly, she holds out one of the muffins, and he just stares at it. She jiggles her hand, encouraging him to take the muffin. And when he finally does, she offers him a toothy smile.
“Thank you, little one,” he tells her, which is confusing considering he looks like the little one at the moment. But she doesn’t question it as she sits beside him, her knees drawn up to her chest.
They eat their muffins quietly, and when he asks what her name is, her answer whistles through her missing front tooth. “Katniss.”
He nods and doesn’t say much else.
~~~~~
She watches the boy as he steps into the dining room, his eyes momentarily catching hers where she stands behind her grandfather in her plaid dress and too itchy turtleneck sweater.
He’s dressed in a black suit, the lights from the chandeliers above reflecting off his shiny, dark shoes, looking every bit like the influential guest her grandfather expects him to be. It’s a drastic difference from the state he arrived at the house in only two days ago.
However, his blonde curls still hang limply on his forehead, and the color of his skin continues to have a grey sheen. But his blue eyes reflect a bit of life in them, even if it’s fleeting, and she thinks that might mean something as he stands before her grandfather as still as a statue.
Her grandfather puffs out a cloud of smoke from his cigar, watching the boy with sharp eyes.
“Have you ever held a gun, boy?” The boy shakes his head. “People around here call me sir when they answer me.”
She can see his bottom lip slightly tremble, but he schools it with a blank expression.
“No, sir.”
Adult talk isn’t something her grandfather allows her to listen in on; numbers and business were of no interest to children. But as he talks to the boy, she gets to witness firsthand how regular people are turned into bloodhounds. It turns her gut a little, even though she doesn’t quite understand.
Yet, all she can do is press her lips into a thin line as the boy slips the silver signet ring on his left pinky finger.
~~~~~
He earns his first tattoo when he’s eighteen. It’s on the inside of his left wrist in dark ink, a snake wrapped around a rose, confirming he is owned by the House of Snow.
He’s no longer ‘boy’. He’s Peeta—a man now, another thug in a dark suit. Although… he isn’t.
Not to her.
Sometimes, she’d catch him reading in the library when he wasn’t doing a job for her grandfather, and she often marveled how he looked more like the boy she knew and not the man he’s become. His brows would crease in an expression of concentration, and not one of anger which appeared on his face often after running ‘errands’. And then the look would disappear when he caught her spying on him—not that she was ever being very discreet about it.
“Focus on your homework, little one,” he’d say, a small smile on his mouth. Katniss would blush and turn back to her reading for a bit before sneaking glances at him again.
Peeta is still somewhat of a mystery to Katniss, but he’s kind to her—unlike other guests that show up unannounced in her home who see her as the annoying nuisance in her grandfather’s shadow. He remembers her birthday, perching small gifts on the window sill in the alcove she normally hides in. And he never ignores her when he comes across her in the halls or is forced to sit beside her during dinner. Instead, he listens as she prattles on about her studies or what happened in the house while he was away on business trips.
When it dawns on her one day that perhaps they are friends, he merely smiles as she tells him this and doesn’t disagree with her. It’s at that moment that Katniss felt their friendship is valuable and something she needs to protect—even if Peeta sees her as a little one. Because friends look out for one another, even when they’re out past their bedtime with hands full of food.
“What are you doing out of bed, little one?” he asks when he finds her sneaking out of the kitchen.
“What does it look like?”
Peeta steals one of the blueberry muffins from her pile, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. “It looks like you’re being a packrat. What happened to the food you brought to your room last night?”
“I ate it all.”
He watches her with an amused gleam in his eye and takes a bite of the muffin he stole. Then he opens her bedroom door and tells her to stay put. “Don’t wander the halls at night, little one. It’s not safe.”
And yet, he’s there the next night, stealing one of her treats and escorting her back to her room.
~~~~~~
The first time Peeta kills someone, she knows, because he cries—she’s no longer that naive to assume that ‘errands’ actually means something else. She hasn’t seen him cry in five years, yet when she finds him curled up in the corner of the guest room, he reminds her of the boy she met so long ago.
She takes in his marred knuckles, dried blood crusted on his skin, sealing wounds that hadn’t been there that morning. His hair is limp, and the suit he wears is in ruins with holes and a long gash in his side.
When his eyes find hers, they’re red with a bit of fear in them—no longer caused by squeaky floorboards and a scrawny eight-year-old.
Something conflicting tightens in her chest; one small voice tells her to go to her room like she’s been told many times before, and another tells her to stay. And because she’s never been one to properly listen to warnings, Katniss sits beside him, drawing her knees up to her chest.
She offers him one of the blueberry muffins in her hand, and it takes zero prompting this time for him to take it and slowly pick at the treat with shaky fingers. When it’s gone, she notices that the slight body tremors have stopped and his breathing is now even.
“Thank you, little one,” he says after a moment, and Katniss gives him a small smile.
He’s worth protecting.
~~~~~
Katniss can’t stop staring at him, and it’s… enlightening.
She doesn’t know when the perceptions of a kid are washed away by that of a sixteen-year-old, but she definitely notices how nervous or flushed she becomes when Peeta’s eyes land on her. It’s not that she’s never been shy around him before, but that was from a child feeling praise from someone she admired.
Now it’s from the fact that she’s never noticed the random gold flecks in otherwise blue irises, or that he is a head taller than most men she knew—his frame filling out the all-black suits almost too well.
And have pens and silverware always looked that small and fragile in his hands?
When he’d place a hand on her lower back to guide her out of a room, or gently move her out of the way, she’d jump from how it felt like it was burning her through her clothes. But Peeta never seemed to think twice of it, and would simply drop his hand after it served its purpose.
She isn’t blind to the fact that others have long since realized these discoveries about Peeta—apparently, she’s the last to know. Katniss also hates that this will never change how Peeta sees her because she’ll only ever be his little one, and he’s a man who still has needs.
One evening, she stumbles upon Peeta with one of his ‘gifts’ from her grandfather, a tall brunette she’d seen before who has a penchant for short red skirts. It takes her all of twenty seconds to realize what is happening in the dark corridor before she turns on her heel and goes to sulk in her room.
In her bed, she selfishly imagines what Peeta is like as a lover. She wonders if his lower lip would become a little fuller if she worked it between her teeth, or if the gold flecks in his eyes would disappear completely from lust. Would he grip her hips in his massive hands and call her a brat for being too rough? Still, how can she not be when someone else is currently touching what is hers?
And it’s from these fantasies that her hand travels underneath her silky sleep shorts, and she touches herself to thoughts of large hands and broad shoulders. When her orgasm washes over her in waves, her toes curling, she swears she can faintly hear the sound of expensive shoes stopping outside her bedroom door. Then, after a few seconds, the guest bedroom door closes and she releases the sigh she was holding.
The next day, he finds her in the library because it’s her birthday and he’s never missed a birthday in all nine years that they’ve known each other. He slides a rectangle box across the table she’s sitting at, but Katniss doesn’t look up, still embarrassed about what she’d witnessed the day before.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he says, and this makes her look up because he only ever calls her that pet name when she behaves.
The look she finds is soft and maybe a little ashamed.
 Ah, she stayed in her room… for once.
“Whatever,” she mumbles, glancing back down at her book that she hasn’t actually been reading.
“It’s your birthday,” he tries again.
“Yeah, I know,” she sniffs. “Thanks for reminding me.”
She startles when a hand suddenly covers the page she’s staring at, and she glances up to Peeta’s blank expression. “Don’t be a brat.” Something about that word makes her flush, and she knows it has everything to do with the way she thought about him saying it last night. “Open your present before I leave to run errands.”
Katniss huffs a little, and Peeta replaces his hand on her book with his gift. She eyes the delicate bow on top, faintly wondering how his large fingers formed such an intricate knot. Then she tugs on an end, watching it fall apart before she brushes it off and flips open the lid.
Inside lays a black pearl attached to a delicate gold chain, all perfectly nestled between a smooth dark velvet. It’s definitely different from the other trinkets she’s received from Peeta on her birthday, and she stares at it a moment longer to figure out what it means.
But Peeta must read her thoughts. Or her confusion must be so blatant on her face because he plucks the necklace from the box, and Katniss watches him owlishly as he walks around the table until he’s standing behind her.
She wordlessly pulls her hair off her neck, holding her breath when his steady fingers brush against her skin as he works the clasp on the chain. After what feels like eons (but was probably only thirty seconds), his hands fall and the pearl pendant dangles from around her neck.
Then he leans forward and whispers, “It means I’m yours, little one.”
~~~~~
It’s during one of her grandfather’s infamous soirées that she decides she’s tired of waiting for Peeta to make the first move. Surely it had been her age holding him back, but she’s nineteen now, and… nothing.
He continues to tease her with gentle (although chaste) touches to the small of her back, and sometimes grazes her bottom lip with his thumb when he pushes a loose lock of hair out of her face. And when she nipped at the tip of his thumb once, he merely shook his head even though his breathing had picked up slightly.
“We can’t,” he’d insisted, shaking his head. But he had kept his thumb in her mouth, a firm pressure against her tongue while he tried to regulate his breathing again.
She’s never been so frustrated in her life, but she has a plan.
She walks into the large sitting room wearing a black floor length dress that shows off a little more skin than what she’s used to. However, her heart soars to the ceiling when she notices the tall brooding figure standing near one of the long windows watching her with an unreadable expression on his face.
Good.
Katniss moves around the room with her mission in mind, making sure that she is always in Peeta’s line of sight. It becomes easier when a stocky gentleman with dark shoulder-length hair takes it upon himself to talk to her, and Katniss lays it on thick.
She touches his chest when he makes her laugh, slides closer to him when he whispers something in her ear. And when there’s a break in the conversation, she glances over to make sure Peeta is still watching—he is.
He still keeps his distance, except now there’s a firm set to his jaw.
Hm.
The gentleman—Marvel is his name—tells her about his travels in Greece and Katniss leans up to whisper replies in his ear, closing Peeta’s view off from her completely. It doesn’t matter what she says, what matters is that when she moves away from Marvel, Peeta is standing right there. And Katniss can’t help but smirk a little.
“Katniss,” he says, voice like a knife’s edge. It’s clearly meant as a warning, but Katniss’s grin grows wider.
“Who’s this?’ Marvel asks.
Never taking her eyes off Peeta’s face, she answers, “Oh, this is my bodyguard. Don’t mind him. He often plays nice.”
Then Peeta storms off, and Katniss can’t contain her triumph as she excuses herself and trails after him.
Tumblr media
New My Little Pony A Day in the Life of Equestria Vol. 3 Manga Book $10.26 available here: https://amzn.to/33G63Vp
Details below:
ELE-MANE-TERY, MY DEAR PONIES! All Fluttershy wanted was to hold a simple, fun springtime Scavenger Hunt for her friends.
FIAC ONLINE 2021
Printemps oublié __________ Long considered the season of rebirth, springtime marks the transition from the austere months of winter into the lush abundance of summer, serving as a reminder of nascent growth, life, and possibility. Drawing inspiration from the 1865 poem “Printemps oublié” (“Forgotten Spring”) by Sully Prudhomme, Gagosian’s presentation for the first online edition of FIAC alludes to the duality inherent to spring: carrying forth the weight of the immediate past while presenting glimpses of a vibrant and prolific future to come. In 2021, recognizing the enduring magnificence of the natural world—in the face of both the previously unimaginable circumstances that defined the past year and the precarity of environmental futures—gains considerable urgency today. Printemps oublié celebrates the poignancy of these contradictions by presenting artworks that reflect on, investigate, or revel in the joys of spring as the new season both literally and metaphorically approaches. March 9, 2021: Orpheus (Review)
Man, I really should’ve taken a film class in college.
Tumblr media
Orpheus, understand, is a fantastic film...that I am highly unqualified to judge. I man, I’m gonna give it a shot, but this isn’t gonna be a professional film essay on the reflections (ha) of this movie on the French political scene at the time or anything like that. It’s just gonna be what I thought of the movie.
And what did I think of the movie? Well, other than letting me refresh my French language skills a little, I had an excellent time with this movie. It’s stunning, it’s groundbreaking, it’s breathtaking, and it’s a great example of what can be done with clever filmmaking and practical effects. I mean, what would you expect? It’s Jean Cocteau.
Tumblr media
I’ve only seen one of his films prior to this, La Belle et la Bête, and that’s a beautiful film in its own right, with equally fantastic effects. Like Aladdin and The Thief of Bagdad, Disney took a lot of that film’s aesthetic and themes from Cocteau’s version of the story. What can I say, they’ve got good taste.
As for me...I’d like to think I have good taste, but that’s technically what this whole thing is for, right? To broaden my palate and further define my taste. Sooooo, what exactly did I think of this one? Check out the Recap (Part One | Part Two) if you want to see my reaction to the movie as I watched it! Otherwise...
Review
Tumblr media
Cast and Acting: 9/10
Jean Marais is our star here, and one of Cocteau’s favorites (he was also the Beast and the Gaston in La Belle et la Bête four years earlier). He plays Orpheus like an absolute dick most of the time, which is interesting, since the character is the prototype of a tortured artist, so it makes some sense. However, that portrayal is somewhat on the writing, less so than Marais’ performance. That said, he’s still fantastic in the role. François Périer is also fucking fantastic as Heurtebise, and is genuinely my favorite character (and I still think he was meant to represent Hermes). María Casares intricately plays her complex character, an aspect of Death in love with a poet. Which, yeah, rules. And Marie Déa and  Édouard Dermit were...fine as Eurydice and Jacques. Yeah, they were both very good, but I can’t say that they were perfect, especially Dermit. But still, all of these were strong performances in a strong movie.
Tumblr media
Plot and Writing: 9/10
Oh boy, the PLOT. Jean Cocteau’s screenplay is a great example of a screenplay adapted from source material, but doing something completely different with that material. It’s adaptation done...well, right, but also done creatively. Now, obviously, that’s done mostly through the visual rather than the verbal, but it’s still done VERY well. I mean, come on, they turned the tale of Orpheus into a Hades and Persephone love story as well!
 Yeah, I didn’t mention it in the Recap, but think about it! An aspect of Death, referred to as royalty, falls in love with a mortal human. Said mortal is also in love with another woman (allegedly). Now, yeah, that’s basically the whole “even the Gods loved Orpheus” thing, but HE also falls in love with HER. She’s Hades, and he’s Persephone! But in the end, he needs to return to the mortal world for springtime, while Hades must remain in the Underworld...for now, anyway. Maybe that’s e over-reading a bit, but I can see it. In any case, the screenplay’s adaptation of the original story is fantastic. Not the easiest to dissect, maybe (the whole “Death loves Orpheus” thing sort of comes out of nowhere), but still great!
Tumblr media
Directing and Cinematography: 10/10
I mean...it’s Jean Cocteau (and Nicolas Hayer for the cinematography). What else am I gonna do, give him a nine and say that it wasn’t perfect? I mean...come on. It was amazing. It’s Jean goddamn Cocteau. The camera movements and shot framing are goddamn spectacular IT IS JEAN FUCKING COCTEAU
Tumblr media
Production and Art Design: 8/10
Art design was only really OK, though. Yeah, sorry, sometimes it struck me quite well, but I don’t know that I can say the production and art design was as much of a stand out for this one. The only reason is because the camera and editing really did all of the work here, real talk. Cocteau made this movie look amazing, not as much the movie itself. But don’t get me wrong, the movie does still look amazing. Whomever did the location scouting did a great job in finding an abandoned military school for the Underworld, because it’s great looking. However, again...the way it’s all shot isn’t about the set itself, it’s about the camera work. And one other thing...
Tumblr media
Music and Editing: 10/10
MMMMMMMMMMMWAHCHEF’SKISSBABY
Yeah, now, this is an amazing goddamn editing job be Jacqueline Sadoul, and the music by Georges Auric is equally as fantastic. This is a gorgeous film, and the editing is a HUGE part of that. Practical effects is one thing, but clever editing also made this film work as well as it did. There’s so much to unpack with that, it’s genuinely hard to go into. But hell, I don’t need to. Watch this film, especially if you have HBO Max. You’ll see what I mean, because it’s a fantastic looking movie that’s genuinely hard to describe to the unfamiliar.
Tumblr media
92%, and I’m not looking back.
Well, one day I probably will, because this movie was wonderful, and DEFINITELY worth another watch. Mostly so I can better figure out what’s going on, and what Cocteau’s trying to say. Although, to be fair, this movie isn’t as experimental as film can get, not by a long shot. It’s still beautiful, without a doubt, and it’s absolutely worth a second viewing.
OK. Now that that’s done, let’s go to another country renowned for its fantasy stylings. Or, to be more accurate...let’s go back. You guys ready to get spooked?
The State of the Blog
Hello loyal readers and curious visitors. It’s the 1-year anniversary of The 34 Disney Project, and it’s time for a status update.
The purpose of The 34 Disney Project was to revisit the entire Disney Animated Canon at the age of 34. I wanted to revisit these movies, free from biased memory and nostalgia. I wanted to see these movies impartially, judging them only on their craft, their story, and how well they’ve endured.
Age 34 was chosen because Walt Disney was 34 when he began making his first feature-length film. As you can tell from the archive, I’m 35 years old now, and I’ve only managed to review 40 movies from the Disney canon. The remainder will be published in due time.
What happened in the meanwhile?
To answer that question, I’ll need to explain the state of things one year ago. It was August 2020. The Coronavirus pandemic had been going on longer than anyone anticipated, and there was no end in sight. My non-essential business had reopened after lockdown, but clients were few and far between. I typically worked half a shift per week.
I had lots of free time and nothing to fill it with. I defaulted to my standard hobby of movies and television. But in such great quantities, the marathon sessions seemed indulgent and pointless. For my own mental health, I needed to make the binging seem productive and meaningful. Long-form critical analysis solved my problems. It gave me something to do, it justified my media consumption, and it gave me something to tack on my resume.
I settled on the Disney Animated Canon as a subject for several reasons. First, I wanted to review something that spanned a long era. Something I could rightfully document across a changing landscape. Something I could analyze against film history.
Second, I wanted to review something moderately popular. Publishing articles online without any sort of feedback or engagement is no different than yelling into a hole.
I’m pretty terrible when it comes to marketing and SEO. The only way I would find readers was to wait for strangers to actively search for something they like, then accidentally discover my blog. It’s not the best strategy, but it’s the one I used. I’m a media guy first, a writer second, and then a thousand places down the line, I’m a marketer. I’m as skilled at analytics as I am at lion taming.
Third, I bought a subscription to Disney+ to watch The Mandalorian. I knew WandaVision would be released in the indeterminate future, so I decided to buy a year’s subscription instead of the monthly. As such, I needed something to watch in the meanwhile. With the (mostly) entire Disney archive available, I decided on the Disney Animated Canon to fulfill my writing ambitions. The purchase happened to coincide with my 34th birthday, and the project was  modeled after the coincidental relation to Walt Disney. And that’s how the project came about.
So why did I only review 40 movies?
I kept a pretty steady schedule for the first few months of the project. I’d watch a movie Sunday night, write a rough draft on Monday, flesh out the draft on Tuesday, edit on Wednesday and Thursday, format and publish on Friday.
And for a while, that schedule worked very well. But around springtime, business started picking up. I was no longer working six hours a week. I was working closer to 20 hours a week. I had trouble balancing the work and the project. I couldn’t dedicate entire days to writing and editing anymore. So instead of a weekly article, I aimed to publish three a month.
Then summer came around. Things got very busy. Busier than they had ever been, even pre-lockdown. I was working over 40 hours a week and barely found time to write at all. I published fewer articles in summer 2021 than I did in October 2020.
Things have changed. Things have changed considerably. And that’s a good thing. The world was chaos in 2020. I couldn’t even advertise my first two articles on social media in 2020. Every day, democracy was in peril and lives were in danger. It seemed vulgar and embarrassingly tone deaf to interrupt the discourse with my opinions on Pinocchio.
Things are still crazy. The world is still on the brink. The Coronavirus is still raging. But I no longer feel like I’m going insane anymore. Life isn’t quite as absurdist or nihilistic. It’s still mostly absurdist and nihilistic, but you know, it’s marginally better.
More than that, I got a new job. Better hours at a more steady schedule. Hopefully this means I’ll be able to re-establish a schedule, write more, and finish the project before year’s end. No promises, but we’ll see.
The 34 Disney Project aims to reflect the legacy of Walt Disney against his life and career. But it took more than a year to turn Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs into a film. And so shall it take more than a year to complete The 34 (and 35) Disney Project.
On the Other Side of the Fence
Prompt 13: Katniss is “just one of the guys” and the only girl in school who’s never been asked for a date by any of these guys. One day she’s “discovered” by a modeling agency and whisked to the Capital. She returns 3-months later with a new look, new found confidence, and cash. How will Peeta deal with the new Katniss and all the attention she gets from everyone?  [submitted by @567inpanem]
Author:  @jhsgf82
Rated:  T
Word Count:  5,713
Author Note: In-Panem AU, no games.  The class distinctions between Seam and Merchant are still there but aren’t quite as prominent, so Seam and Merchant sometimes hang out together; although, some folks do still have prejudices.  Also, Mr. Everdeen is alive!  So, this became more about the childhood love story between Katniss and Peeta than the modeling, at least this part, but I hope you still enjoy my take on this prompt.  This will be a Part 1 of 2, and it will be posted on A03 under my account as well as on the EFE A03 collection page.    Edit by @mrspeetamellark.  Thank you, thank you!  I love the fan casts for older K and P!
P.S. I’ve been listening to Ruelle’s “I Get to Love You” quite a bit while writing this, and it’s giving me major Everlark feels, particularly for this story, so let’s call it the theme song for this fic.
Tumblr media
Part I
Peeta’s POV “Wait up, Katniss!”  Peeta chased after Katniss as fast as his skinny twelve-year-old legs could carry him.
But Katniss Everdeen was like a bird, free-spirited and not to be caged, and when she set her mind to something, more than likely, she was going to do it.
Peeta loved that about her.
Today, Katniss had gotten it into her pretty head to climb to the top of the apple tree in his backyard.  When she’d found out his mother wouldn’t be home, she’d thought it’d be the best time.
They played in secret, for Peeta’s mother had clearly expressed her dislike and distrust of Seam kids, plenty of times.  Merchant Circle kids and Seam kids didn’t usually interact, but Peeta had no problem with those from the Seam, and he especially loved being around Katniss.  He didn’t see the big deal, honestly.  So what if they lived on the outskirts of town? So what if they didn’t have as much money‒Peeta was used to eating stale bread and leftovers, anyway.  Not to mention, Katniss and her father’s squirrels had made many a dinner for his family.  He wondered if his mother knew where they came from, for it was always his father or him who did the trading.
Peeta didn’t get to see Katniss as often as he would like‒he was almost always stuck at the bakery, and rarely unsupervised‒but times with her were his favorite times.  Sometimes they were alone, which he preferred, but other times, they hung out with her small group, consisting of Thom, Gale, and occasionally, her sister, Primrose.
As if his life (or hers) depended on it, Peeta raced to catch up to Katniss.  She was already three or four branches up when he made it to the tree.  Unfortunately, he was running so fast that he didn’t stop quick enough, and…Thwap!  He smacked his head against a low branch.
“Peeta!” gasped Katniss from her perch.  “You okay?!”
“Fine!” he called up.  He rubbed his forehead, feeling like a complete idiot.  It smarted a bit, but his pride was far more wounded.
As if preparing her, Peeta shouted, “I’m coming up!”  And then he reached out for the lowest, sturdiest-looking branch he could find.  He wasn’t quite sure how this would work.  He’d never climbed a tree before, and it looked tough.  Katniss was small and nimble, but he was bulkier.  He wasn’t completely uncoordinated, but he was much better at lifting things than doing anything requiring agility or balance.  Even so, he had to try.  And so, he found his footing and pushed himself up.
Turned out, his upper body strength (from lifting sacks of flour) came in handy in getting him up the tree.  But there were two problems:  One, his footing.  And two, the relatively young apple tree wasn’t quite liking his size, and some of the thinner branches were bending under his weight.
“You’re almost there, Peeta,” urged Katniss, and all he could see was her encouraging smile.  He reached out to take her hand for a boost but felt his shoe slipping against the bark.  And then, his body weight and that thing called gravity were pulling him downward…
“Peeta!” shrieked Katniss as she reached out desperately for his hand.
But in those few seconds, Peeta knew he couldn’t grab hold.  Katniss may be strong for her size, but she was tiny, definitely not strong enough to hold him up.  If he did grasp her hand, he would surely drag her down with him, and he would never put her in danger.
Peeta dropped to the ground, left foot first, a sharp, white-hot pain shooting up his leg on impact.  He groaned and fell flat on his back, his head smacking hard against the ground.
Katniss was down the tree in a heartbeat, kneeling beside him.  A bright light silhouetted her; she looked like an angel.  Was he dead?  Or dying maybe?  If so, hers was the last face he wanted to see…
“Peeta!  Peeta!  Peeta, are you okay?” cried Katniss.  She was touching his shoulder and chest only as if she was afraid to go near his leg.
He murmured something and reached out to try and touch her, but his head was spinning and his vision was blurring.
Amidst the excruciating pain and confusion, he heard her muttering, “Oh no, oh no, what do I do?!”  And then, she started to cry.
No, no, no.  This was no good, at all.  He couldn’t deal with Katniss crying.  He probably had a broken leg; he didn’t need a broken heart, also.
“Don’t…”  He attempted to reach for her again, and this time, he felt her take his hand in both of hers and rest it against her face, her tears wetting it.  There was a persistent ringing in his ears, and then he passed out.
While he was unconscious, Peeta dreamed of Katniss‒of the first time they met.  They were five years old.
Katniss’s father brought her by the bakery to trade, and while their dads were talking, he played with her.  At first, she was shy, only peering out at him from behind her father’s legs, but he managed to convince her to come out.
She wore a red plaid dress, and her hair was in two braids.  He’d seen her earlier that day in school‒his father had pointed her out to him and told him how he’d wanted to marry her mother but she’d run off with a coal miner (this coal miner, with the singing voice that made bird’s stop to listen)‒and he’d heard her sing.  Her voice was every bit as lovely as they said her father’s was.
Once he got her to come out, they talked a little and ended up chasing one another around the bakery.  Of course, his mother wasn’t home that day.
In retrospect, Peeta had been a goner for Katniss from the start, completely mesmerized by her singing voice and her beautiful gray eyes, which he got a closer look at in the bakery.  Then there was her smile, which she didn’t give freely, but when she did, it was so worth the wait.  She didn’t talk much, but he’d been able to get her to laugh that day in the bakery, and the noise, much like her singing, was music to his ears.  Oh, and her braids‒he’d always been really fascinated by her braids.
Before she left the bakery, Peeta couldn’t help leaning forward and smacking his lips against Katniss’s, just to see what it would be like.  He’d seen people kiss before, even his parents, though not often.  It was weird when his mom and dad did it, but he liked it better than when they yelled at each other.
To his surprise, kissing Katniss wasn’t bad or weird.  He liked it.  And he wanted to try it again, someday.
After the kiss, Katniss’s cheeks were reddened, and she turned away from him, dashing back behind her father.  He was so afraid he’d done the wrong thing and that she’d hate him forever, but when they went to leave, she smiled and waved at him.
Peeta came to with a start, jerking around and whimpering as he clutched at his throbbing leg.  He realized he was in his bed, though he didn’t know how he’d gotten there.  Also, he wasn’t alone‒Mrs. Everdeen was at his side.
“Peeta, honey, lie still.  I have to set your leg,” Katniss’s mother spoke in her soft, doctor-like voice.  She was a healer.  He assumed Katniss must have gotten a couple of boys or a man, maybe her dad or his, to carry him to his room after his fall.
But where was Katniss?  And was his dad here?
Before he could look around for them, Mrs. Everdeen told him she was going to give him some medicine to take away his pain.  She injected him with something, morphling, he heard her say, and instantly, he felt his entire body relaxing.  He looked over, then, to see Katniss entering his room and approaching his bedside, followed by her father.  Her arms were folded, and her forehead was all scrunched up like how it got when she was really worried.  Her eyes were puffy, too, and her cheeks were stained with tears; she’d definitely been crying.
Peeta raised his head and tried to smile and say something reassuring. “Kat…it’s…o-”  But his words trailed off as a strange, dizzy feeling overtook him, and his head dropped back onto his pillow.  Katniss came over and took a seat next to him, slipping her small hand into his.
This is nice, he thought.
But the euphoric feeling was quickly broken by his mother’s loud voice as she barged into his room. Uh oh.
His mother discovering the Everdeens in their home was bad news.  She basically hated all the rest of them as much or more than Katniss, especially Katniss’s mother.  Maybe it was because his dad used to love her?
“What’s this?!  What have you done, you stupid creature?!” his mother screeched at Katniss.
Peeta’s eyes shot to his best friend who immediately dropped his hand.  He saw the look on her face; her cheeks had gone reddish, and her eyes were filling with tears, which she was clearly fighting back.  She looked scared, upset, and angry.
Just another reason for him to hate his mother.
“Katni…” Peeta tried to say her name, to comfort her, but his words caught in his scratchy throat.
He tried again, but he was cut off.
“Listen here,” Mr. Everdeen’s voice boomed, loud and clear, “you will not speak of my daughter that way!  I won’t allow it.  My wife has been kind enough to help your son, so show some respect to my family.”
That should shut his mother up, Peeta imagined.  Mr. Everdeen might be a friendly, quiet man most of the time, but he could be intimidating.  So, Peeta didn’t expect his mother would say another word.
Mr. Everdeen placed a hand on his wife’s shoulder.  “Honey, fix up Peeta, then we’ll be on our way,” he said softly.
Peeta’s mother was silent after that; in fact, he thought she might have left the room.  But he was in and out of consciousness, and next thing he knew, it was dark, and he was waking up in his bed with only his father beside him.
Groggily, Peeta asked, “Where’s Katniss?”
“She’s at her house, son,” his father replied, tucking his covers nearly up to his chin. “You should get some rest.”  And with that, he was left alone in the darkness.
Peeta recalled his brothers stopping in briefly, and then his mother.  He imagined she only cared about him being injured because it might hinder his work at the bakery.  He was sure she’d still give him plenty to do, though.  What did she care if he was in pain doing it?
His mother was mainly condescending, railing on him for being so stupid, which he expected and accepted, but what really made his blood boil was when she set in on Katniss.
“That’s why you don’t play with Seam children,” she chided, casting him a dark look.  “They’re wild heathens with no regard for rules or safety.”
They’re kids, Mother‒just like me.  They just want to play and have fun.  They don’t want anyone to get hurt.
What his mother said next lanced his heart.  “I forbid you to see that girl anymore.”
Peeta squeezed his fists beneath the covers.  She really cared nothing for him, did she?  Of course, if his mother didn’t care that he had a broken leg, why would she care if forbidding him from seeing Katniss ripped his heart out?
But it didn’t matter.  There was no way he was going to stop seeing Katniss; nothing his mother, or anyone, could say or do would ever stop him.
Katniss snuck into his room later that night.  She must have climbed the tree next to his window and crawled through.  She was next to his bed rousing him before he even realized what was happening.
At her touch, Peeta woke.  “Katniss, what are you doing here?” he hissed, trying to sit up.
She held out her hand as if to stop him.  “I brought these for you, from my mother,” said she, handing him a small package.  “Medicine for the pain and a salve for the inflammation.  Instructions are inside.”
“Thanks.”
It sounded like the delivery came from her mother, and he didn’t think Katniss would have taken the items on her own without permission‒mainly because she probably wouldn’t have known what to take or what to do‒but he doubted she had permission to be here this late.  He glanced at the clock.  It was nearly 11 PM.
“Are you okay?” she asked, fidgeting with her fingers.
“Yes.”
“Does it hurt?”
“A little.”
“I’m so sorry.”  He could see her eyes glistening in the moonlight.  Was she going to cry again?
“It’s not your fault, and hey, it probably earned me some time off at the bakery.  So, thanks.”
Most likely, he wouldn’t get any time off, though.  Or, if he did, it wouldn’t be much.  His mother would probably have him back to work as soon as he could move, but Katniss didn’t need to know that.  He tapped her playfully on the nose, and she laughed a little.
“Katniss, thanks for bringing the medicine, but you better go. I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Peeta sighed.  He didn’t actually want to send her away; he wanted her to stay with him, forever.
Rather than listening to him, though, she did the exact opposite‒she pulled back the covers and climbed into bed with him.
Wow.  Were wishes being fulfilled tonight?
Okay, so, Peeta had just discovered the absolute best medicine for any of his ailments‒having Katniss Everdeen in his arms.
“Am I hurting your leg?” she asked as she tentatively snuggled in closer.
“Not a bit.”  He smiled.  “That’s my good leg.”
“You sure?  I could move.”
“Don’t you dare move,” he said, wrapping his arms completely around her and holding her in place.  He kissed the top of her head.  For a moment, he wondered if he shouldn’t have done that.  They had only shared that one kiss when they were 5, and it had never been brought up since.  She probably didn’t think anything about kissing him, anyway.
“Okay, good,” she said, shutting her eyes and resting her head and a hand on his chest.
He looked down at her.  She looked so peaceful and seemed close to falling asleep, but he shouldn’t let that happen.  If his mother found Katniss here in the morning, in his bed, they were both toast!
But it was too nice having her here, and he wanted to enjoy it for a little while longer.  He took the chance to play with her braid, like he’d always wanted to, and she let him.  It had just become his new favorite thing to do.  Katniss always wore her hair this way, except for a couple of times when she had it down, and Peeta loved her braid.  But he was also kind of curious to run his fingers through her hair while it was down.  He imagined it would be so soft and silky.
“Peeta,” he heard her murmur just when he thought she was asleep.
“Yeah?”
“Your mother…she hates me.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie, Peeta.”
“Okay, maybe she does.  But, remember, she’s not too fond of me, either.”
Peeta felt Katniss shake her head against him, and he gave a small chuckle.  It was so sad, it was funny, in a way.
He looked down into her face; she wore a sad expression.  “Heyy,” he soothed, stroking her back lightly.  “Hey, Katniss, listen.  I don’t care.  Don’t give another thought to what my mother said, because it’s not true.  Nothing she says means anything to me or matters, at all.  You’re wonderful and amazing, and it wasn’t your fault I got hurt, and nothing anyone says or does will ever change the way I fee-think about you.”
How did he feel about her?  He didn’t quite know the exact word for it, but whatever it was, it was pretty strong.  Like right now, he could feel his heart beating wildly like it was trying to escape his chest.  She always made him feel this way, as if his heart might run away or explode into tiny pieces.
Katniss softly sighed.  “Okay, Peeta.  If you don’t care, I don’t care, either.”
“Good.”  He stroked her hair once, twice, three times.
They remained curled up together until just before dawn, and then Katniss slipped away.  Right away, he felt the loss.  Despite the discomfort in his leg and the fact that he barely slept, for he was either watching Katniss or the clock (in fear they might sleep too long and be discovered), Peeta had never known such a peaceful, wonderful night.
It took nearly two months for the leg to heal, and it did earn him some time off bakery duty, but as expected, his mother had him back to work soon, doing what he could while hobbling around on crutches.
On the bright side, Katniss visited him almost every night, sneaking into his room and into his bed, saying she was checking to make sure he was okay.  Peeta got used to having her there, and he enjoyed it, yet he was surprised they were never caught.
Once he was healed, much to Peeta’s disappointment, Katniss stopped coming by; although, it might have had something to do with him suggesting she should stop.  He hadn’t wanted her to stop, and he hoped it hadn’t hurt her feelings; he was simply worried they’d be caught and his mother would say more terrible things to her.  He didn’t care if she said terrible things to him, but he never wanted Katniss to be called a name again or be made to feel bad, by anyone.
After that, Peeta had to be sneakier about seeing Katniss, and he did see her less.  Seemed like, after he healed, his mother gave him extra work at the bakery, in theory, to make up for the time he’d missed.  But no matter how much work she gave him or how often she warned him against having anything to do with the ‘little dirtbags’ (one of the kinder nicknames she attributed to the Seam children), nothing‒not even President Snow, himself‒could keep him from Katniss.
He did worry, though, about his mother trying to cause harm to Katniss and her family.  She was surely spreading the incident around, making it sound like it was Katniss’s fault‒as if she’d bullied him up that tree then pushed him out or something.  She was probably trying to gain sympathy from the townsfolk and hurt the Everdeens’ business, but Peeta assumed everyone would continue to buy Katniss and her father’s game.  It was too good.  And if not, they would be fine because her dad had his job in the mines.
Even so, Peeta sometimes hated the way things were.  Sometimes, he even considered running away from home, off to the Seam or even beyond the fence and into the woods, with Katniss.  On the other side of the fence, they could be together everyday and live happily without anyone’s interference.
It was a nice dream.
—–
The next summer, Katniss announced to Peeta that she was going to teach him to swim, and she showed him her father’s lake for the very first time.
“You ready?” she asked excitedly.  She was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, he in just shorts.
He stared deep into her eyes, then nodded.  “Yes.”
They waded out further into the lake until it was up past his shoulders and came to her chin.  She went behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist, and forget drowning, Peeta thought he would die right then and there, over this.
See, he’d been having…different sorts of feelings about Katniss lately, in the last couple of months…  He cared so much for her, as always, but he’d also been thinking more and more about things like:  kissing her, touching her, and feeling her pressed against him.  He wished she’d sneak into his bed again, but he was also kind of afraid he wouldn’t keep his hands to himself if she did.  He knew he would never hurt or mistreat Katniss, but sometimes, it was tough to think straight around her, and sometimes his body seemed to have a mind of its own.
It was frustrating.
Right now, Katniss was hugging him, and it felt nice.  No, not hugging–supporting him in the water.  But it felt like a hug, and he didn’t get them often, his father being so busy, and his mother, well, not being the hugging type.
Katniss’s hands briefly ran up his stomach, to his chest, and back down.  It made Peeta shiver, and his breath hitched.  And he had to wonder, did she get the kind of feelings he did, too?
“You okay?” she asked.  He could feel her bangs brushing his bare back, tickling his skin a little, but in a way he really liked.
He tried to answer coolly, but it came out as a choked “Y-yes.”
“Okay.”  Katniss shifted a little, instructing him to dunk his head and practice holding his breath.  “I’ll hold onto you.”
“You won’t let go?” he asked.  More so, he wanted the reassurance of having her there, because she emboldened him and made him feel safe, even if she was much smaller than him.
“Never, Peeta,” she assured.  He smiled and rested his hands atop hers.
“Okay, I’m ready.”  And with that, he dipped his head under the water.
Katniss was a good teacher, even if he was kind of a bumbling idiot when it came to the water.  He’d never survive in D4.  Not like he’d ever have any reason to go there.  But they had fun, swimming around and splashing one another.  Peeta even picked her up and tossed her in a couple of times, and she came right back at him, latching onto his shoulders and dunking him or wrapping her legs around his waist and climbing his back.
Peeta got better at staying underwater, and he took to swimming around her and tickling her beneath the waves‒in innocent places, of course, like her feet or her sides.  One time, though, the water caused her shirt to billow up and he accidentally slid his hand across the bare skin of her stomach.  It was so flat and smooth; it felt nice.  For a split second, his hand took over before his mind could have any say in the manner, and he squeezed her side a little.  Katniss sucked in a sharp breath and reared back.  And instantly, she was throwing out her arms and kicking her legs to put some distance between them.
“Katniss, I’m sorry!  Di-did I hurt you?”
She shook her head rapidly, but she could barely look at him.
Again, Peeta apologized while slowly moving toward her.
“It’s okay.”  She swallowed.  “I’m just…ticklish there.”
“Oh.  Okay.”
Things were a little weird after that, and Katniss kind of kept her distance from him, despite Peeta apologizing quite a few more times.  She finally told him to just forget about it.
But Peeta didn’t want to forget.  He wished he could touch her anytime he felt like it, and that she would want that, too.
After their swimming lesson at the lake, Peeta started having dreams about Katniss, embarrassing ones.  More embarrassing, still, was the way his body reacted to the dreams, even in his sleep.  It was a bit upsetting, and she would be mortified if she knew.  But he couldn’t seem to help himself.  And it occurred almost every night.  Peeta considered talking to his father about it, but that would be weird, and talking to his older brothers would be even weirder.  But they were actually helpful in a way.  Hearing them talk, he came to understand that it was normal to feel what he was feeling.
Those feelings continued‒oh, did they continue!‒and Peeta started to notice other girls, too, but none of them left any kind of lasting impression on him as Katniss did.
Was it normal for a boy to be so obsessed with a single girl his entire life?
—–
Eventually, Peeta decided he needed a distraction from Katniss, and so, he joined the wrestling team at 15.  His older brother wrestled, and he’d always thought that was pretty neat.
Turned out, he was really good at it, even came in second in the school, only to his brother.
The wrestling built up Peeta’s body and his popularity.  Although he’d always been stronger than most boys his age, due to working in the bakery, he developed, growing broader and stronger but remaining lean in the waist.  He made more friends, and girls were starting to pay attention to him.  Save for one‒the girl he’d noticed all along.  Unfortunately, Katniss still treated him like her pal, and even worse, she was spending less time with him and more time with Gale Hawthorne…
Peeta didn’t like it.
But he supposed he couldn’t blame her; between wrestling and the bakery, he’d had next to no time for her.
Or, maybe Katniss was finally figuring out that he didn’t belong in her world.  Not because she was a Seam girl and he was from town, but because, he didn’t seem to fit in with her and her friends.  For instance, he wasn’t good at the same kinds of things as they were.  It didn’t matter to Peeta, but maybe it mattered to her.
Regardless, if she would allow it, he would remain by her side, for always.  Whether they were doing something he was good at or not, whether they were going someplace dangerous or unpleasant, no matter what, wherever she went, he wanted to go, too.
But over the next year, things began to shift between them.  Peeta’s popularity in school only seemed to push Katniss away, and whenever he tried to remedy the situation, she either ignored him or flat-out made up an excuse.  It was a crushing blow each time she did.
One day, a girl asked Peeta to go to the slag heap with her.  He knew what that meant, of course, and he actually considered it, if only to give himself the chance to feel something for someone other than Katniss.  But in the end, he just couldn’t go through with it, and he told her no.  She was pretty, but if her name wasn’t Katniss Everdeen, then Peeta Mellark simply wasn’t interested.
That was the day it hit him‒he loved Katniss Everdeen.  No, not just loved her; he was in love with her.
Maybe he should tell her how he felt.
But how could he?  She would never reciprocate‒she didn’t think of him that way‒and he didn’t think he could take the rejection.  Best to leave things the way they were because having Katniss as his friend was much better than not having her at all…
Katniss’s POV (Age 16)
Several days later…
“So, where’ve you been lately, Peeta?” asked Gale.  “Been wondering where the other half of Peetnip’s been.”
“Actually, we prefer Everlark,” said Peeta with a grin.
Katniss hugged her legs to her chest, blushing over the combining of hers and Peeta’s names, even though she knew it didn’t mean anything.  Gale was just fooling around, and Peeta was playing along.
“Yeah, so what gives?” barked Gale.  “You too good to hang out with us all of a sudden?”
“No, not at all, I-”  Peeta glanced over at her.  “I’ve just been really busy with wrestling.”
And his new friends…
And that girl…
Katniss was sure she wasn’t coming close to hiding the disdain on her face.  Of course, she’d heard about that pretty girl asking Peeta to the slag heap.  And it had hurt way more than it should have; she’d actually felt like a part of her died inside that day.
Katniss wasn’t sure why, but lately, she’d been thinking about Peeta a lot.  About old times.  When he fell out of the tree; when they slept in the same bed; that summer at the lake…
How had things changed so much between them, and somehow, not at all?  Part of Katniss wanted so badly for things to always stay the same, but another part of her kind of wished that things could be…different between Peeta and her.
She shook off her thoughts and turned her attention back on Gale.
He was looking as skeptical as her over Peeta’s excuse.  Not for the same reason, probably.  It was because Peeta was a merchant’s son.  And that meant Gale was always paranoid that Peeta was only pretending to be their friend for some ulterior motive not yet revealed, or that he’d ditch them all at the first opportunity.  Honestly, Katniss was surprised Gale had even accepted Peeta into their circle in the first place.  But, as with her (and everyone), it had taken him some time.
“Seriously, man, it takes up almost all of my free time.  And then there’s my…”  Peeta stopped short.
“Your mother,” Gale finished for him.
“Yeah.”  Peeta looked to Katniss then, probably because he knew it was a sore subject for her.  Katniss glanced away.
Peeta’s mother.  As much as Katniss disliked her, Peeta still seemed to care about what she thought, even if he said he didn’t.
Not that she could blame him.  Angering his mother was dangerous, and she wanted him to be safe.  Simply associating with her, as Peeta was doing now, could earn him a beating.  And Katniss felt constant guilt over it.  He shouldn’t be here now; she should tell him to stop coming, once and for all.  But she just…
“Katniss, who’s that man leering at you?” Gale’s voice broke Katniss’s train of thought.
“Leering?”  She blinked several times in succession.  No guys ‘leered’ at her.  Guys barely even knew she existed, aside from her small group‒and they didn’t exactly think of her as a ‘girl.’  She was just one of the guys; she’d never even been asked on a date.  Not that she’d want to go on one…except maybe with…
Shaking off the ridiculous notion, Katniss shielded her eyes from the sun and looked over.  Gale was right; the man was actually staring at her.  He was an older man, wearing dark, fancy clothing and gold eyeshadow.  He definitely wasn’t from around here.
“I don’t know.”  Katniss shrugged.  “Never seen him before in my life.  And he’s not leering.”
“Nah, I think he is,” Gale smirked.  “He’s looking pretty hard at you, Catnip.”
Katniss’s cheeks flushed.  It felt so strange and uncomfortable having a man, any man, look at her that way as if he was evaluating her…
“Well, all I know is, he can’t be from District 12,” remarked Gale.  “Look at those fancy clothes.”
Her old hunting partner had read her mind, and instinctively, Katniss looked back at Peeta for his take on the matter.  Peeta didn’t even seem to notice her; he was focused on the man, and he seemed none too happy about the situation.
The man with the gold eyeshadow came over then, and he introduced himself to Katniss.  His name was Cinna, and he was from the Capitol.
The Capitol.  What could a man from the Capitol possibly want with her?
“I’m sorry to stare, but let me explain,” said Cinna.  “I’m a stylist in the Capitol, and I’ve been searching for the perfect girl to model a new line of clothing I’m designing.”
Yeah?  And what does that have to do with me?
He was going to have to spell this one out for her.
“I think you’re it.”  At his words, Katniss’s eyes widened.  She glanced back at her group, the entire lot seeming as thunderstruck as her.  “Miss…?”  He extended his hand.
“Katniss Everdeen.”  She accepted his hand and shook it.
“Katniss, what a lovely name.  May I call you Katniss?”
Numbly, she nodded.
“Well, Katniss, you’re just what I’ve been looking for.  That skin, those eyes…I could do wonders with your unique look.”
Katniss blinked several times, opening her mouth and closing it like a fish out of water.
“No offense,” she finally managed to say, “but I think you have the wrong girl.  As you can see,” she motioned in presentation of her dirty clothing and disheveled hair, “I’m no model.”
Cinna grinned.  “Not yet, you aren’t, but that’s where I come in.”
Katniss couldn’t understand it.  What was this man thinking?  People from the Capitol were known for their exotic tastes, but this was a bit much.  So what if he thought she had nice skin and eyes?  Couldn’t he find plenty of other girls with far better skin (that wasn’t caked in dirt and the faintest hint of coal dust) and with much more alluring eyes.  A unique look?  Well, the Capitol was full of people like that, wasn’t it?
“There must be better choices than me in the Capitol,” she spoke her thoughts aloud.
“Yes, well, I want a girl who’s real,” explained Cinna.  “An ordinary girl.  One of the people.  From the districts, not some fashion icon from the Capitol.  I’ve worked with plenty of those, and they’ve left me…wanting.”
Katniss stared blankly at the man before her.
“Just think about, Katniss,” he said, taking her hand and patting it gently.  “It would only be for about three months, and it would pay a lot of money.”
Money?  Her eyes lit up at the magic word.  Now that the mine was temporarily shut down after that accident, her family could certainly use the money, but a model?!  She couldn’t be a model.  And the thought of leaving behind her family and Peeta…well, she didn’t like it one bit.
Katniss glanced back at her blue-eyed boy with the bread, who seemed perturbed and maybe a little sad.  Their eyes met, and pleadingly, she stared into his, hoping for a silent answer.  What do I do?
The current shots are from my recent #Meetup with the #NYC_Photographers meetup group. We enjoyed the 4000 cherry trees at Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey. The trees were at peak bloom and very pretty. We started at the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center and those of us that stuck it out for the whole afternoon ended up walking around 7 miles due to the large size of this park even though we took a train to reach the far end where the lake is. #springtime #cherryblossom #branchbrookpark #newark #newjersey #springblooms #spring #outdoorshoots #outdoors #awalkinthepark #chrislordnyc #chrislord #pixielatedpixels #nycphotographer #exploretocreate #justgoshoot #photoediting #photoshop #everything_edited #livelysolutions #creative_shots #flowers #flowerstagram #fav_flowers #flowerstalking #greatoutdoors ©2021 Chris Lord's Pixielated Pixels - So much more to see and\or purchase on my website, link in my Bio, thanks My Main Website https://ift.tt/xCvBb1Q - 10,000 images! The New Plan (TM) (re: Mikau’s WIPs)
Hi guys! I’m currently writing the final chapter of Serendipity, so it’s time once again to take stock of my current projects and decide what I’m focusing on next. Below is a list of what I have going on.
Does any of the below sound interesting? Is there anything in particular you’re excited for or want to know more about? I’m sure I’ll do a bunch of other random stuff along the way as inspiration strikes, and I’m probably not going to do these strictly in this order.
Let me know what you think!
Ladrien Present: Yes, you read that right. I’m attempt to write a Ladrien and Adrienette one-shot where Adrien is alone on his birthday and Marinette and Ladybug attempt to make it special for him by, first, Marinette throwing him a party he attends remotely and then by bringing the party to him as Ladybug. I’m about halfway done. I just have to write the actual Ladrien scene which is kind of the hard part. ^.^; Oh well. We’ll get it done.
Alyanette/Alyabug Prompt: You may remember that about a month ago I did a prompt giveaway while I was procrastinating on writing Serendipity Chapter Thirty-Eight. After I had closed the prompt collection, I got a handful of other prompts in. I finished the original ten prompts and then went back to work on Serendipity. Now that I’m wrapping up Serendipity, I’m thinking about going back and completing the prompts sent to me after the cutoff. The first prompt is “Alyanette/Alyabug balcony scene”. I’m thinking drunk!Ladybug crashes onto Alya’s balcony and accidentally reveals her identity. I don’t know. We’ll see.
Adrino Prompt: This is another prompt I received. Kind of. The original prompt was about Nino teaching Adrien to do something sexual, and there was an  aubergine emoji, so that made me think of Nino teaching Adrien to cook. I’m thinking this will take place post Adrien moving out on his own.
Marichat Prompt: Another prompt I received was about Chat Noir visiting Marinette and it somehow coming up in conversation that Marinette has always thought of Chat as a player. For some reason, this makes Chat really angry because he can’t stand her in particular thinking that about him. I haven’t really thought about the specifics of this one yet.
Lukadrien Prompt: The next one was a prompt request for Luka saving Adrien from being akumatized. I’ve thought a little bit about what I could do with this one, but I don’t have anything particularly concrete yet.
Alyadrino Prompt: Someone sent me an Ask that said, “Snuggle party makes me imagine what if nino and alya accidentally did to adrien what luka and marinette intentionally did to him in shades 12″, and I thought, “...Oh, all right. Why not?” I’ve thought about the specifics of this one and think I have a basic outline.
Plagg and Wayzz Prompt: I got a comment on one of my stories that said, “Can you do a top wayzz bottom plagg one? Preferably in universe and in human form. Doesn't have to be smut.” First I thought, “What the bloody hell?” because it was a comment on a Lukadrien story, and that’s all it said, and I thought, “Well, that’s random.” I’ve never really written Wayzz before, but this gave me the idea for a story where the team is up against an akuma that somehow separates them from their kwamis, leaving the heroes unable to detransform and the kwamis in defenseless human form. What I came up with really doesn’t have anything to do with the prompt other than Plagg and Wayzz will both be in human form. I don’t know if this is going anywhere, honestly. ^.^;
Adrienette Hanahaki: About two months ago I did an ask game about a trope I’d like to try writing, and the one I came up with was Adrien with Hanahaki disease (The one where you start coughing up flower petals due to unrequited love making flowers grow inside your lungs). I’ve been thinking about it, and I’ve decided I’d like to actually write this story. My basic outline is: Adrien starts showing symptoms, and Gabriel badgers him about whom he’s in love with, and Adrien just blurts out, “Marinette!” And Gabriel threatens Marinette into dating Adrien, and they start fake dating but then fall in love. I’m not going to guestimate how many chapters I think this will be because I always seem to get it wrong and end up jinxing myself. ^.^; I don’t think this story will be very long, though. (Okay. I’m going to say it: three to five chapters. Place your bets.)
Lukadrien Winter Pieces: I don’t know if this is going to happen or not. I wanted to write two winter-themed Lukadrien stories for people, but I don’t have concrete ideas yet.
Happenstance and Magic: Marichat May 2019. Marinette and Chat Noir adopt kittens together, and Adrien tries to get Marinette to see that he’s not perfect but still a worthwhile person deserving of her love.
After knocking out the one-shots, I’d like to circle back to Happenstance and preferably finish it before May. Well, I mean, I’ll probably still be polishing up chapters and releasing them in May if I only release one chapter per week, but...we’ll see. First, I have to write the darn thing. I should be able to manage. I only have about twenty-something chapters left to write.
The Seduction of Adrien Agreste: This is part of the Springtime in Wonderland (Daisy/Jabberwocky) series. It deals with Luka and Adrien experimenting with physical intimacy to see if they can reach a compromise where Luka and (asexual) Adrien are both comfortable and have their needs met.
After Happenstance, I think the next thing I want to tackle is Seduction. People seem interested in the piece, and I think it would be an interesting challenge to write a Mature work for the pairing. It’s mostly going to focus on the relationship and the characters’ thoughts and feelings. I don’t really write smut, so I feel very out of my element. We’ll see how it goes. ^.^;
Things Currently on the Backburner:
The Rejects Club: Predominantly Marichat with Adrienette. Chat Noir and Marinette unexpectedly grow very close very fast as they open up to one another after Marinette overhears Adrien seemingly dismissing her as a romantic prospect. Identity shenanigans at farcical levels ensue.
I recently finished editing and releasing everything I had written for this story so far, so that’s all there is for now. There’s still SO much left to go, and I feel a little overwhelmed by it. I still have all my notes and my timeline, but...it’s a huge story, and it seems a little much to deal with right now. I’ll probably have to chip away at it little buy little. I’ll see how thing are going in the second half of 2021 to determine whether it’s time to work on Rejects again.
Springtime in Wonderland: Yeah, no. Jabberwocky and Daisy aren’t happening anytime soon. I may do one more Nachtmusik chapter and get Seduction out in the first half of 2021, but I don’t have plans to work on the rest again in the foreseeable future. This series really takes a lot out of me mentally and emotionally because I based some of it on the really dark points in my life (not necessarily the events specifically but more the emotions), so it’s hard to go there when my mental health is pretty rubbish, and I think everyone’s mental health is rubbish nowadays. 2020 has really taken a toll on most people. So, yeah. I’ll revisit the idea of working on it again in the latter half of 2021.
And that’s it for now. Let me know what you’re thinking. ^.^
