Review: There has been a fun trend of Black YA horror being published and I am here for it. Kosoko Jackson’s newest novel, “The Forest Demands Its Due” is another book to add to the list of fantastic horror being written by Black authors for Black teens. This twisty story is not so much scary (at least to me) but feels more like a funky thriller with ghosts, a creepy forest, a curse that needs to be broken, and a mystery that needs to be solved. There is so much going on in this novel but not once does it feel overwhelming. Jackson did such a wonderful job with the world building that all the different elements work together to create a seamless narrative. I was definitely into Douglas’s journey as he discovers his power.

Douglas’s story starts out as a classic fish out of water where he is a relatively new student at an ultra exclusive private high school. After experiencing a tragedy, he is “recruited”, in a way, to the school and his mother given a job as the school nurse. As a Black Queer he doesn’t fit in and experiences bullying, but is trying to make the best of it because he knows “this is a great opportunity and he’s special.” (Yes, the racist undertones are there and are explicitly implied throughout the story.) Douglas does have a sweet heart and when he witnesses a student death that no one seems to remember the next day, he becomes determined to find out why. Douglas ends up at the Headmaster’s office who tells Douglas how special he really is and that Douglas is the key to ending the town’s curse. Douglas is clearly skeptical but goes along anyways and thus is brought into this world where nothing is as it seems. Douglas talks to ghosts, monster things, a god, and is able to wield earthen magic. Through it all though, and this is what I really liked about the novel, is Douglas’s good nature as he is exposed to all the weirdness. He has such a good heart and is always thinking of helping and protecting others. It was never to his detriment, but allowed him to fully tap into his power. I like that he was true to himself throughout the entire story and that is what made him so strong.

Another aspect of this novel that I greatly enjoyed was its social commentary. The racist micro-aggressions that Douglas experiences is not shied away from, nor is the implied racism. Douglas makes note of it as well as the bigotry that he experiences. Even the reason for the curse is a statement on society and also propels Douglas as he tries to end the curse. I would say more but that would be giving away spoilers and this review has been hard to write without giving away spoilers as there are a number of twist and turns that makes “The Forest Demands Its Due” so interesting.

"Thank you...." Mortimer whimpered as Joule prepared to pass through the doorway. When Joule was only a few inches away from the door, his hand reached out once more, and snatched Joule into the waiting darkness. The door slammed shut behind them, and now, the only thing visible was the man in front of Joule. "You had to have been an Employee, if you were truly stupid enough to trust that." He smirked, clasping onto Joule. He brushed back a long strand of white hair behind his ear as he released them, knowing that no matter what move they made, no matter how they may have ran, they would never get any farther from him. "And to think, we believed there would be something special about you, 432." He released a wicked cackle as he drew closer.

Mortimer studied Joule's strange form for a second, lifting them by their throat. "How peculiar.... You stole 126's form, as well as his heart, eh? Well, I'm sure he'll love to see you back in the office soon. Hmm, though, perhaps not. They all hated you, after all." He spun them around and dangled them far above a small, bleak room that had appeared in the blackness, before dropping them and allowing them to fall down towards it. "Don't worry. We'll take real good care of you."

Joule's back slammed against a metal table, startling the person bent at a nearby desk, rapidly typing away at the keyboard in front of him. Immediately, it stood from the desk and swatted at a button dangling from a cable beside the platform Joule now laid on. Once it was pressed, Joule could hear a strange, mechanical hum, but found they could no longer move any of their limbs. "Oh-oh, my! Hello!" The person beamed and excitedly waved down to Joule, clasping its hands together. "I, oh, um- it's been so long since I've done this! Hello! My name is Martin, and I am here to help you!" It assured them.

Life outside the parable

Like I mentioned in previous posts, the figurines ending made me think of another theory. This is gonna be a long post I guess so the whole thing will be under the cut

While some fans made Normalverse AUs where Stanley and The Narrator were normal humans that lived outside the parable, or escaped the parable together and then lived a normal life, I had a different thing in mind.

What if Stanley and Narrator indeed were normal human beings:

Stanley a normal office worker that loved to work in his own garden and Narrator being an author whose special hobby was programming little things like websites/apps etc? And he was so passionate about it, even dreamed to develop a whole game one day... But he was skeptical. Was he good enough? Should he really risk it? What if the critics would all be negative? Luckily, Stanley was there to encourage him and practically make the decisions for him.

"I was passionate, I was skeptical. I weighed each devision with profound thoughtfulness. And then somewhere along the way, I stopped making decisions. I became lazy. And I came up with- well... A character named Stanley to do my thinking for me."

What if they lived a perfectly normal life together, you may choose if they lived as romantic partners, roommates or best friends...

But what if one day Stanley grew ill and died, left the Narrator behind, who felt like he was drowning in loneliness and grief?

"Why did I invent Stanley? Was I lonely? Yes, perhaps that's it. Perhaps I needed to imagine I had companionship."

But he still had his project, sth Stanley had encouraged him to actually implement. And so he did. He put a lot of effort into it, a lot of his time to distract himself from his grief and pain..and then the thought came to him... Why not honor Stanley and his impact and make him a character in the game?

A little NPC which he could built after the real Stanley...but the more time he spend to create the model of his Stanley, the more he thought...

Why not make his Stanley the protagonist? Who needed Mariella, Employee 432 or the Curator?

His Stanley deserved to be the main character in his game, without him it wouldn't even exist...

And suddenly, this wasn't a game about a woman called Mariella anymore, it become the story of a man named Stanley, it wasn't a game for the public anymore, it became his own private game.

His chance to spend have some more time with his Stanley...

And he loved his protagonist, he really did, even tho he let him go through hell in some endings...but wasn't that only fair after Stanley had been so cruel, enough to leave him alone so early?

"And Stanley really did make for a wonderful companion. Even if he was a fiction."

He was able to lie to himself for the longest time. That this companion was enough. That Stanley was still there... Didn't even visit his grave, cause to him, it didn't exist.

He lived in that stage of denial for a long time, until the wall of lies got more and more cracks.

It wasn't the same. It missed the warmth, the intimacy of a real companion. It wasn't enough.

And he knew the dependency on his protagonist wasn't healthy. But it was his way of dealing with Stanley's death until he was ready to properly say goodbye.

"But I suppose it's grown old now. I want to think for myself again. I want to go back to how it used to be. Yes, I can be on my own again. I can do it."

And so he did. After he let Stanley have one last run in the office, he deleted the game... And instead of trying to deal with his grief with fictional protagonists...he started writing about it. About his feelings. And he visited Stanley's grave, put some of his favorite flowers there...and talked to him... Even tho he knew no one was there to answer...

Some more fun facts about this AU:

In this AU, Stanley had a dog he had called Bucket. Narrator had challenged him to give him a ridiculous name, and well... The dog was a gift from Narrator cause Stanley was struggling with panic attacks and he thought the dog may have a calming effect. And it did

They have a little garden with a lemon tree and Stanley almost planted all the flowers himself. He jokingly called it the memory zone cause the Narrator used to sit there and flip through old photo albums or book scripts, usually becoming quite sentimental.

The Narrator's real name is Nathan, but during the time he was developing the Stanley Parable, he got so used to referring to himself as The Narrator that he had almost forgotten it or barely uses it.

** LOCATION:** BEACH HAN RIVER

Of all of Jeongguk's riddles and clues, this one was (probably) the hardest to decipher. A river? When did anything happen at a river? In reality, that's because nothing special had happened at Han River. But it was the closest thing to a beach that he could think of in the heart of Seoul. This one, while important, was nearly impossible to replicate.

And that's because this event had happened when they were on a trip, a beach at night sitting by a bonfire as they snuggle up under a blanket. A while before the trip, Jeongguk had bought a promise ring with the intentions of giving it to her for their anniversary. But it had been burning a hole in his pocket and, frankly, he was too impatient to wait that long to give it to her—already having been dropping hints almost as soon as he had bought it.

And so, on November 8th, he had offically promised himself to her. He had proven his devotion and had promised with determination to replace the pretty princess looking promise ring with an engagement ring. And now, he plans to make good on that promise.

As you arrive at Han River, you spot Bora standing below the night sky with a bracelet case in her hands, holding a moonstone bracelet to match your current promise ring, and another envelope. Inside of that envelope is another photo of them the night he had promised to love her forever, and the final letter that would lead her to Jeongguk's destination.

Bora was sitting down with her dogs on a blanket on the grass. She spots Chae looking around and waves to her. "Chae sweetheart! I'm over here. I'm afraid I can't talk long, I have practice to go too. But I was told to give you this." She gently hands her the bracelet case. "Good luck girly."

"You did it! You found all my clues, now there's just one more and instead of collecting gifts and another note, at the end of this one will be me. Ahhh… I'm nervous, but I hope that you've enjoyed everything I've prepared for you tonight, my sweet love. I tried my best, but I didn't want to do anything normal per se? I wanted to make it fun.. and I hope I succeeded. Welcome to Han River~ And I know, I know. It holds no significant meaning to us. I could've sent you to Namsan Tower where we put our lock, or sent you off to the tattoo parlor where we found our red string of fate. But, while those are significant things in our relationship.. none of that measures up to how imporants this step was in our realtionship. When I thought I was going too fast, diving in head first while knowing with absolute certainty what I wanted. You. That night will forever be burned into my mind; how the fire crackled as we cuddled, how you made me worried and panic when I thought I sprung it on you too fast, and the sheer volume of love and adoration when you broke down in happy tears in my arms. God, I love that memory. Because you learned then just how deep my feelings for you run. Even if it was merely 2 months into our relationship compared to our now year. I'm sorry this has been long time coming, but I hope this will make up for the wait? I love you, Kim Chaewon. Now, come find me finally, okay? the closer she gets to the final destination, the more she's starting to realize about this entire thing.

is this what she thinks it is? there's no way it could be—she thinks it over again and again while pacing over the han river's alley. but why else would he bring up all these old memories? especially this one? the one that's burned into her mind like the bonfire they created. how sweet he was with that cute smile that still has her running towards him a little too frantic. she couldn't come up with any other purpose for this besides that idea. maybe.. she should have dressed better for the occasion.

eventually, chaewon finally came across her unnie that immediately jumped up to pass her the gift and note. she didn't really have too much time to think since everyone from here on seemed frantic, including her. she could feel her heart pounding inside her chest and that's all her mind could really comprehend.

with shaky hands the girl opened the letter with everyone surrounding her in anticipation. it really is what she thought it would be. she wasn't sure when this time would come. sure, they've discussed this plenty of times, but having it actually happen has her legs nearly buckling underneath her from the overwhelming mixture of emotions.

is it bad that she already feels tears brimming? maybe. her head was a mushy mess anyways, her body obviously taking the toll of everything together. she never knew you could have so much anxiety over something positive.

was she really ready for this? she didn't know.

chaewon had to take her time reading the letter over and over again. maybe too long. but, she shouldn't leave him waiting any longer for her out in the cold.. or herself for that matter.

Happy Birthday!

(This was originally written for @mentheii. Almost everything that happens here was her idea, so thank you Oakie for helping me with my silly writing :])

(While this wasn't intentionally written for the anniversary of Ultra Deluxe, I thought it'd be neat if I shared this today. So I hope you enjoy, and happy birthday Ultra Deluxe!)

Hey, hey, before you start reading, can I just say something?

Stanley sat at his computer, absently pressing random buttons on his keyboard. He was vaguely aware of the yellow arrow sitting on his desk, rambling about narrative tropes. Suddenly, green text flashed on the computer screen. Stanley jerked forward, staring at the words.

Hey, Stanley. It’s me, the settings guy. Happy birthday :]

The words flickered once. Twice. Then they vanished, returning to a blinking green cursor. Stanley didn’t move, still gawking at the screen. The Narrator droned on, oblivious to employee 432’s brief message.

A loud bang suddenly rang through the office, startling them both. It sounded a lot like a confetti popper, Stanley noted.

“Wh- Stanley, did you hear that noise? I assure you that I have nothing to do with it!”

Stanley leaped to his feet, already rushing to the room with two doors. He was fairly certain the settings person had something to do with it. The Narrator quickly followed, sliding off the desk and onto the carpet. “What- Who is this settings person? You know them??”

He shrugged in response. That wasn’t important right now. Curiosity was pulling fiercely at him, urging Stanley to see what- oh.

The room, completely transformed, would have been unrecognizable if not for the two open doors. It looked as if someone had taken generic pictures of a birthday party and thrown them into a mismatched pile.

Banners and streamers drooped from the ceiling, dangerously close to touching the ground. Balloons labeled Happy 12th Birthday Step-Niece were crammed into every corner, pushing against the ceiling in a vain attempt to escape.

As Stanley stared in wonder, his eyes fell upon a banner. Happy birthday Stanley!!! it read, plainly declaring whose special day it was.

And in the center of the room was a sight that pulled a gasp from the Narrator. “Stanley-” its earlier confusion returned tenfold in the form of annoyance. “Stanley, you’ve never seen a Twister mat before, have you? Well, I’ll have you know that it is a terrible game! The creators clearly didn’t consider sentient arrows would want to play! Why, no such thing as accommodating-”

Stanley had already shot across the room, heading for a table in between the two doors. A delectable looking cake sat on the table, covered in golden yellow frosting. Swirling black icing spelled out The Stanley Parable! accompanied by three candles in the shape of the game’s initials.

But the best part? A small present sat next to the cake with a huge bow wrapped around it.

Out of the corner of his eye, Stanley saw the Narrator stretching over his shoulder, peering down at the box. “A present? Stanley, have you been hiding your birthdate from me this entire time? Wait, no- That cannot be true. I never gave you a birthday! So who in the world would set up a party for you on this particular-”

Something was waved past its face, causing it to stop talking and stare. Stanley held a yellow cat toy, with fake golden feathers attached to the end of a string.

Once he’d gotten the Narrator’s attention, Stanley pointed to the cake. It would be a shame to let it go to waste. Did the Narrator have something to cut it with? Like a cake knife or something.

Stanley knew full well that he couldn’t eat or drink in the parable. There was no need for it. Plus, the Narrator always said that coding in food or drinks would be a hassle. However, he was very interested in hearing the Narrator’s reaction to his thoughts.

He was not disappointed. The line reared back, as if offended by the question. “Stanley, you seriously need to have more regard for your personal health! What if that cake is- oh, I don’t know- filled with uranium? I really don’t have strong faith in your ability to consume large amounts of uranium. The possibilities of something going wrong are endless! And I really cannot have the protagonist dying in the most unflatteringly stupid way possible,” it finished with a huff.

The office worker had to fight to keep the smile off his face. The Narrator was… how should he say this.

“Say what.”

Hilarious. Especially when it was ranting.

Stanley then dashed through the left door, leaving behind the Narrator’s angry splutters.

Thankfully, there was nothing off about the meeting room. And the Narrator had stopped whining at Stanley and gone back to his usual dialogue. Stanley grinned as the Narrator prodded him in the side. Past the broom closet and up the stairs, the two didn’t encounter any surprises.

As the doors to his boss’s office swung open, Stanley was met with a cacophony of meowing. The noise was unmistakable, despite him having never heard a real, living feline before. An absurd amount of cats filled the office, lounging on the couches and leaping across the tables.

Several of them wandered over to Stanley and the Narrator. Grinning, the office worker immediately bent down and began petting the cats.

“Stanley began to pet the cats. This was a poor decision on his part, as he knew nothing about the cats’ health. Yes, I’m willing to bet that at least one of these felines has rabies!”

As if on cue, one of the cats tried to lick the Narrator. “Oh, no! No, no, no, no- get away from me!” The cat was undeterred, stepping closer to the rapidly retreating arrow. It pointed up at Stanley, almost pleadingly. “Stanley! You have to help me out here, this cat is trying to eat me alive!”

He rolled his eyes at the Narrator’s dramatics, but turned away from the cats to pick up the line. Carrying the Narrator in his arms, he made his way to the keypad behind the boss’s desk. Cats still swarmed around their feet, but at least the Narrator was out of their reach.

Stanley honestly doubted the cats actually had rabies, or any dangerous disease. But maybe being in their proximity made one overly dramatic.

“2 - 8 - 4 - 5,” the voice growled, pointedly ignoring Stanley’s remark. They then made their way to the elevator, trailed by a large herd of felines. Just as the door was about to shut, what seemed to be hundreds of cats flowed into the elevator. It was as if they had turned into liquid; an obvious sign that these weren’t normal cats.

Although the elevator was practically stuffed with cats, there was still an area of clear space for the Narrator and Stanley. The door closed, all the cats meowing up a storm, and Stanley silently pressed the down button.

“And here we are! Almost at the Mind Control- oh my god. Stanley, why are there crustaceans everywhere!?”

Stanley peered out of the elevator, barely able to see that the gray metal floor had turned into yellow sand. He couldn’t even see what the Narrator was referring to, as the cats had flooded out of the elevator and into the hallway. He simply shook his head, unable to find a better reaction. This run just kept getting weirder and weirder.

Oh, right. Stanley remembered that he was still holding the Narrator and — seeing that the cats had disappeared down the hall — decided to unceremoniously dump it on the sand.

“OW! Stanley, what the he-” the line stopped. “Did you really have to drop me like that? A warning would have been nice!”

The office worker shrugged in response, amused by the Narrator nearly swearing. The sand was soft, so it couldn’t have hurt that badly. And the cats clearly weren’t interested in the Narrator.

The arrow muttered something under its breath before sliding down the sand filled hallway. Stanley quickly followed, noticing several cats dashing down the ESCAPE hallway. He hoped the Curator would take care of them.

In the Mind Control Facility, the metal flooring had also been replaced with sand, the occasional crab scuttling across it. With cats trailing behind them, Stanley followed the Narrator through the facility. He smiled faintly upon hearing its usual monologue. Even when the whole office was going haywire, the Narrator still did its job.

“Why of course, Stanley. If I don’t bring some semblance of normalcy, who else will?”

Oh yes, and being stuck in a time loop in an office building was normal.

“You know what I mean.”

Now facing the control panel, the air seemed to be charged with electric anticipation. The cats clamored and meowed behind Stanley. The Narrator was a good few feet away, watching Stanley with thinly veiled impatience. He took a deep breath. Then pressed the OFF button.

Blackness. And a rising chill of uncertainty that Stanley no longer felt. In front of the gathered crowd, the usual scenery had been replaced by a beach. The yellow sand stretched out of the facility, where it eventually met with crashing waves. Stanley couldn’t believe it. Water. Ocean!

Adding to the bizarre, impossible yet possible sight was hundreds of balloons. It seemed that the birthday party had been brought to the beach too. Following the cats spilling through the open door, Stanley stopped a few feet from the water. The salty air felt heavenly against his face. Sand had definitely gotten in his shoes, but he didn’t care one bit.

The cats seemed equally unburdened, getting tangled up in the balloons or practically launching themselves into the water. Stanley’s gaze snapped to the sky, where several of the cats had managed to glitch their way up there. They floated slowly towards the horizon, into the unknown, supported by bundles of balloons. Back in the water, fearless, water loving cats were swimming freely.

The office worker turned back around, noticing the Narrator wasn’t, well, narrating. The line was simply sitting inside the dark facility, watching the chaos.

He waved to the arrow. No reaction. He tilted his head. Hey! Narrator!

“What? Oh yes, hello, Stanley. I was simply distracted by... whatever is going on out there.”

Stanley hummed, before taking a seat on the sand. He patted the ground next to him. The two of them could sit out here together. There was a good chance this wouldn’t happen again, so why not enjoy it while it lasts?

A beat passed. Then the arrow slid out into the sun, curling up next to Stanley. The two of them sat there, watching the glitching cats and listening to the crashing waves. It wasn’t a normal ending. Far from it. But... It was a happy one.

Hey 432. I'm rather curious of your version of The Parable. So far us anons have only been able to see a section of your Parable.

Would you mind telling more of what it is? Special locations maybe? Things you have in plan for it? I'm sure it's nothing super elaborate, but I'd still love to hear it!

Oooh, I'd love to talk about it. So, the only ending my Parable has from the one you're familiar with is the Countdown Ending, the Zending, and the Apartment Ending. Only my Zending doesn't have me beg Stanley to stop. It has me controlling his actions while he begs me to stop.

My version of the Apartment Ending is Stanley seeing a mannequin version of the Narrator, while the apartment slowly turns into concrete room with no doors or windows, where he has to starve for the reset to come.

And there's an ending where the office burns down, which I call the Inferno Ending, one where it floods with water that I call the Drowning Ending, and one where he is chased by creatures and has to hide but always gets caught in the end, which I call the Horror Ending.

My favorite is the Wandering Ending. When he steps out of the office, he finds it in complete ruins. Stanley has to wander a post apocalyptic wasteland where he needs to gather food to survive, deal with injuries and infections, and fight wild beasts that mostly come out at night and prevent him from getting enough sleep.

During this ending he sees a ghostly form of the Narrator that reaches out to him and calls his name, but vanishes if he gets too close.

hey narrator do you know anything about employee 432?

432, yes, that number does ring a bell... oh that's right, that was the little side story I never finished. For some context: back in the earliest drafts of the Parable, I thought it would be interesting if there was another character trapped in the building with Stanley. The idea was that you would only rarely see them in person, but they would leave little clues around the office to keep you on the right path. Ultimately, I decided it was too much effort to create a script for him, and it would be more efficient for me to personally dictate the correct choices to the players. (Much more fun for me, as well, and I daresay the game benefited from having more of me.) But I left the backstory of 432 hidden in the game as an easter egg.

Let me pull up the old bio I wrote for him. Ah, here it is. Their name was Roman and they occupied the cubicle just outside Stanley's office. He was to be a special test case; the vague and evil bosses were using him to test the limits of their mind control technology. To that end, Roman was given nothing but a pencil sharpener, and strictly forbidden from ever obtaining a pencil. In other words, they had absolutely nothing to do all day, and only came into work because they were being controlled. I thought this was a hilarious premise at the time, but now it seems rather tragic to me. Being forced to do nothing for an extended period of time is a torment I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Anyway, this was all going to be part of a subplot where I dove deeper into the backstory of the company and why they were using mind control in the first place. But I decided that was unnecessary and took too much focus away from Stanley. When you find out you have been under someone's control, you do not need to know why, you simply need to break free of it and never look back. Yes, the game is perfect as it is with just Stanley and me driving the action. As for employee 432, he became more disgruntled and angry over time, and then suddenly stopped coming into work, presumably having finally broken out of the controls. And that's the end of it; they vanished long before I erased Stanley's other coworkers, so I suppose they could still be out there somewhere.

So I'm planning a fourth Officer 432 story and I have a general concept for the criminal and her gimmick.

The title is not final, of course, but the image is a fairly close depiction of what I had in mind as key for the story - much like Nicole's arrest in Unlucky Thirteen and Julianne smoking a cigarette in The Murderous Brat.
