Today, we'll look at just a small screenshot handful of my favorite playable characters from the Aero Fighters / Sonic Wings series. Please do keep in mind, if you're uninitiated, that this is a SHMUP / game where you fly a jet and shoot down / bomb enemies.
That means that the people mentioned below are pilots.
Tumblr media
Gonna start off strong here with Bobby (known as Arthur Sid Pride in Japan). He's a 1 year old baby from England who can already talk really well and... aside from flying a fighter jet, he's also a... detective on the side.
Tumblr media
Mao Mao here was the first gal to join the series. She's a J-Pop idol who can stop time. As they are want to do.
Tumblr media
Hi, Tee-Bee! What a friendly robot, this guy. Tee-Bee A-10 hails from Sweden and looks like a mix between Johnny 5 and Nintendo's R.O.B., but with added wind-up key and typewriter abs. In his spare time, he's a volleyball referee.
Is it too late in this post to mention that I'm not making any of this up? Good, because -
Tumblr media
Spanky (named Whity in Japan) is a fucking dolphin.

Player Review-Aero Fighters 2/Sonic Wings 2 (1994) Developers-Video System Publishers-SNK Designers-A. Ōkawara, Katsuyuki Yamamotoya, Hiroko Yokoyama Composers-Hiroyuki Itou, Norie Aoki, Soshi Hosoi Series-Aero Fighters Platforms-Arcade, Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD  Genres-Vertically Scrolling Shooter Modes-Single-Player, Co-op Arcade System-Neo Geo MVS
Aero Fighters 2 is actually the first game I played in the series. Assuming the first game would pale in comparison to this, I went straight for this one to see what the series was really like and it didn't disappoint. It took all the elements from the first game that were fun and added to the player's enjoyment and expanded on it.
First of all, it's more graphically impressive than the first one. There is a 2 year gap in development between them so you can understand why. You can still choose from some of the same pilots between countries like Hien from Japan & Mao Mao from China but they also added characters like Ellen & Cindy and Spanky the Dolphin who will become staples in the series, in fact Spanky may be the most iconic character in the series. Keaton from the United States returns but this time he's a robot which means something may have happened to him in the story of the first game and it's carrying over to the next title.
They went alot darker with the soundtrack, it's the kind of music you would expect to hear in a movie when a character is in danger which adds to the tone of the game. This is war, it's not supposed to be upbeat. The enemy machines are mostly what you would typically see in games like these (helicopters, stealth bombers, fighter jets, submarines, warships etc.) but there are also some space crafts and other types of advanced technology to worry about. The levels are usually centered around specific landmarks of the countries you visit so you will see the Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty & The Aztec Ruins among other things which connects the game to the real world.
The game is generally fairly short but like so many other games in the genre, the levels loop after you've completed the initial ten. I've never been a fan of that idea because I feel like once you've run out of created content, the game is over..I don't want to immediately play through the same stages I just saw. There are some bonus levels that are kind of the same concept as those special stages in the Donkey Kong Kountry games where you can collect all the bananas. You fly through these open areas blasting through hordes of enemy machines that don't fire back which allows you to collect power-ups for the next level.
While Aero Fighters 2 isn't exceptionally hard, some of the bosses are pretty challenging. You should be able to beat this game without pouring too many quarters into it but it's probably not an experience you will return to especially if the 3rd game in the series is available in the same Arcade. The Neo-Geo CD version of this game pretty much runs like a rom, you don't have to insert imaginary credits but you can continue infinitely if you die. The pacing of the action is pretty quick especially if you're good at these type of games and can maintain your power-ups.
THE GOOD -The pacing of the game keeps you from losing interest, even if you have to continue, you can get through the game fairly quickly.
-It doesn't take itself too seriously. It's kind of a goofy, silly sort of adventure. Some times I think game developers get so wrapped up in trying to provide a realistic experience that I think they forget the object of developing games is for the players to have fun. Aero Fighters 2 is a FUN game. It has a sense of humor, it has interesting characters and it expands on it's story.
-Instead of the same generic levels that look like nothing that alot of these type of games have, they actually added popular landmarks from different countries so that these locations actually look and feel the way they are supposed to.
-Some of the cinematics and character dialogue for this game are really funny especially some fo the stuff that involves Keaton & Spanky.
THE BAD -The looping gimmick where you complete all of the levels the game really has to offer and then you just play through it again at a tougher difficulty and that's how you get to actually see the ending because they count those levels as new levels, that alot of vertical scrolling shooters use is a cop-out.
I give Aero Fighters 2 an 8.5 out of 10 ONE OF THE BEST IN THE GENRE

This may sound weird but how do you think the Sonic Wings characters would deal with a stay-at-home order? I know Mao Mao would do virtual concerts.
Alrighty, time for a massive Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings headcanon order then!
Keaton - This guy is nerd / cinnamon roll incarnate. Think of anything nerdy such as comic books, videogames and movie marathons. There’s still some workout sessions of course.
Keith - Workout sessions and a variety of chores. Have you seen his cameos in Aero Fighters 2 in Ellen & Cindy and Angela’s ending? That’s the basis for it.
Mao Mao - She’s a streamer. Virtual concerts or her trying to do gaming; more on the former. Numbers of viewers would hit the thousands mark.
Hien - No bloody idea because that guy is a ninja. Probably continuing his “Protect the Shogun” duty?
Kowful - A mix of workouts and lab experiments; and maybe updating Tee-Bee’s programming.
Tee-Bee A-10 - Tons of mischief and pranks. What do you expect from a smack-talking robot?
Lord River N. White - He’d be probably cooped up in his study for the most part. Reading marathons with a variety of novels and works of fiction while sipping the finest tea.
William - See above and also might dabble in a variety of hobbies with his wife as family bonding time.
Spanky - Splashing around somewhere in the seven seas. He’s a freakin’ Dolphin of course.
Ellen & Cindy - Continues to tutor Cindy in a variety of subjects when not taking online classes. The young lady needs to be constantly be updated on her studies.
Angela - Updates and makes blog posts on her fashion and make-up blog. Also answers queries from aspiring makeup artists who follow her posts.
Chaika & Pooshika - Pooshika sows mischief and pranks just to keep morale up. Chaika does a lot of home chores and a lot of random home-related stuff. Their sibling bonding time is to make works of fiction together. Chaika does the illustrations, Pooshika does the storyline.
Glenda - Think of Angela but instead of fashion; she’s running a mechanic and machinery blog. Also likely to be tuning up her own vehicle since her A-10 is at the air base and the “stay at home” order means she won’t be able to tinker her aircraft. Might also try to come up with cool blueprints just to pass time.
Volk - Movie marathons but he has preference for both action and horror films. If not, he might be passed out from too much vodka... maybe?

A game-universe-based crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and Ecco the Dolphin where Robotnik/Eggman is capturing ocean creatures and putting them in robots or turning them into robots.
Maybe he picked dolpins because of their intelligence to try and outsmart Sonic and friends?
Maybe the Aquatic Ruins Zone is related to Atlantis in the Ecco games?
Ecco probably meets up with Sonic at Aquatic Ruins or Oil Ocean (or any number of the water-based levels).
Maybe the Glyphs are related or connected to the Chaos Emeralds?
Possibly one of the dolphin robots is plane-like - referencing Spanky, the world’s first dolphin pilot from the Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings series.
Ecco is likely restricted to water-based levels, unless I use the transforming technique from Tides of Time. There’s several creatures Ecco can transform into, or, I could turn him into a Sonic-styled character. I’m thinking maybe Bat, for the echolocation.
Anyway, Ecco teams up with Sonic and friends to stop Robotnik/Eggman and save the ocean creatures and dolphins.

Aero Fighters 2 (AKA: Sonic Wings 2) for SNK's Neo Geo systems.
Yes, you can pick a dolphin. Yes, it's a pilot, who flies a warplane. Its name is Spanky. Don't underestimate the power of Dolphin.
Neo Geo games seriously rule.
