Story (Chapter 8 Part 1)
Because you were told that the final breaker might be damaged, you need the tools and part required to fix it. Boogeyman says that those things are in a storage area. So you, Wakan Tanka, and Boogeyman set off to that place to get them. Also joining you are Moritaka and Smokey God.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's see. It should be right over... There it is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's a tall tower. Almost like Babel in Tokyo.
Boogeyman: Something like that. It's not as tall as that one. This tower is actually suppose to be based off another fairytale.
Tumblr media
What story it sthat, Mr. Boogeyman?
Boogeyman: Long ago, there lived a poor man and his wife. One day, the wife found out she was going to have a child and she wanted to eat nothing but vegetables. But because they were poor, they couldn't buy any. But next door, there was a vegetable garden. The wife told her husband to takes some vegetables from there without the owner ever knowing. There was just one problem.
Tumblr media
What was it?
Boogeyman: The owner of the garden... was a witch. But the husband would do anything for his wife, so he did what he told her and snuck into the garden at night to take some vegetables. Unfortunately, he was caught by the witch and she was not happy. The husband begged for mercy, telling her that his wife was going to have a baby. Hearing this, the witch decided to let the husband take the vegetables back to his wife, but on one condition: When the child is born, it'll become the witch's property. The man agreed to the terms and was let go. Sometime later, the child was born, a girl. But just as she promised, the witch came and took the baby away, telling the husband and wife that they will have another child and forget about their first one. And they did. As for the girl, the witch hid her away at the top of a tall tower. As the years passed the girl grew... and so did her hair. Her hair grew so long that it reached the bottom of the tower. Since then, every few days, the witch would come to the tower and asked the girl to let down her hair so she can climb it to the top. Then, one day, a prince came and discovered the witch's secret. When the witch left, the prince called the girl to let down her hair and he climbed it. He got there and they fell in love. The girl, wanting to leave the tower and see the world the prince, told him to gather materials so she can make a ladder that she can use to climb down. Everyday, on days when the witch was not coming, the prince would climb to the top of the tower with the materials to create the ladder. But on days when the witch came, girl was leave a small candle lit at the window so the prince would either have to wait another day or until the witch leaves. But sadly, this plan would eventually fail. The witch was starting to get curious on why the girl had a lit candle. So after she climbed down from the tower, she hid someplace. Then, she saw the prince climb the girl's hair to the top. When she saw this, the witch was furious. The next day, the day when the ladder was suppose to be finished, the girl was called to let down her hair again. To her shock, instead of the prince, it was the witch. When the witch found the ladder, she was angry. In her fury, the witch cut the girl's hair and sent her away to a far place. Later that day when the prince came, he was heartbroken to find only the witch instead of the girl. Then, the witch threw the prince off the tower and into a brier patch. He survived the fall, but the thorns left him blind. Since then, he wondered around for some years until he encounter a young boy who took pity on him and took him to his mother. To his surprise, the boy's mother was the girl he loved and the boy is their son. The girl was so happy to be reunited with her prince, she cried. When her tears landed on his eyes, they were healed. The girl, the prince, and their son went back to the prince's kingdom and they lived happily ever after.
Tumblr media
That sounds like a wonderful story. True love brought them together. When they got separated, love brought them back together.
Wakan Tanka: Sort of like how our love brought us back together that day.
You and Wakan Tanka hold hands tightly and stand next to each other.
Smoky God: Nice story, but that doesn't really tell us what we have to do here.
Moritaka: Isn't it obvious? We have to climb the tower.
Smoky God: (freaking out) We have to climb all the way up there!
Lupin: Do you see any other way?
Boogeyman: (laughing) Relax. This time, we thought of something convenient.
Moritaka: (curious) What's that?
Boogeyman goes to something next to the door... A panel with a button on it. He presses it and the sound of a ding is heard and an arrow pointing down light up above the door.
Boogeyman: (smiling) An elevator. But it'll take some time before it comes down.
Moritaka: Well at least we have something to kill the time. Look!
Several angry-looking Oni suddenly emerge from the woods.
Smoky God: They don't look happy to see us.
Lupin: Guess we gotta do what we gotta do.
Wakan Tanka: But as long as we're together, we can finish this job in no time.
The battle begins...
To be continued...

Pics:
1 & 2. Photos of Willis George Emerson, mystery man.
3 & 4. Covers for the story in question. Note that the right pic shows a ruined house - with a sort of castle behind it! Yet, the left pic is that of a vibrant city.
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
In 1908, just 2 years after Lovecraft printed his science article, Willis G. Emerson published his sci-fi/fantasy novel "The Smoky God."
This is supposedly a 'true' account of a Norwegian fisherman & his father sailing their sloop thru a North polar entrance & on into the Earth's interior!
They spend 2 years in a strange under ground 'Eden,' encountering giants, a high priest, monsters & lost races that speak Sanskrit!!
A dim, smoky sun lights up this world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pics: You've got to love the inclusion of interior art in these old books. It's not the greatest of pics, but, it does help to accept the plot's weirdness...
1. Playing "dodge ball" between North Pole icebergs.
2. Meeting the High Priest who lives in 'Eden.'
3. Avoiding loud, giant elephants!
4. Lucky to sight a passing whaler.
5. Another cover for this story.
Plot: Their original motive was a hunt for ivory. But, it became a quest for the Nordic Gods!
Once in the Inner World, the common motif is the gigantic size of every thing. From the plants to the animals - all are immense.
Showing its superiority, the unnamed civilization here uses gold as a mere decorative metal & not for finance!
Capitalism is 'below' these people.
Emerson credits these folk with quite advanced arts & sciences - including astronomy!
The hero thinks the sun is actually an electrical cloud mass...
Whatever this sun is, it's regularly 'eclipsed' - every 12 hours. So, they experience night as well.
(I guess a studying their 'sun' could be called 'astronomy.' But, that 'star' was also worshiped, so their 'astronomy' should have a more religious tone!)
This civilization is still a pastoral society dedicated to agriculture & the arts. They've 'temples' for music, hill side vineyards & valley grain fields...
There's a long explanation of how their monorail runs, that's so inconsistent, it still baffles modern readers!
(Fly wheels & control of air pressure & gravity all somehow relate to the monorail's speed...)
The Inner World folk speak with each other, no matter what the distance, via "air currents."
(Radio?)
Weird Bit: For some obscure reason, the High Priest lives in a place called 'Eden.' This is also the site where the Biblical rivers of the Euphrates, Pison, Gihon & Hiddekel actually flow from...
They learn that the Inner World folk can live up to 800 years old!!
Olaf & his father even get to explore trees that grow up to a 1,000 feet!
(Sequoias?!)
Then, rather abruptly, Olaf's 'visit' just ends...
The fishermen leave - thru the South Pole! But, only Olaf survives to return home - due to a timely whaling ship.
The story ends like it began: asserting the tale's 'truth' & adding to Olaf's development as a type of hero.
(This is a kind of 2nd-hand plot device, where the 'presenter' of the story isn't the 'true' writer, was widely used by many writers.
This trope was also used by Lovecraft. Just check out his "Call of Cthulhu" for 'proof.' Luckily, it's not a popular literary device nowadays.)
Criticism: This tale adds little to the Hollow Earth genre. But, is a compact retelling of certain Inner World ideas.
This genre's civilizations are never equal to ones on the surface. They're either low tech & primal. Or, far more advanced.
This story follows the latter trope.
From the onset, Emerson distances himself from the tale - it's Olaf's tale to tell.
Yet, Emerson is also responsible for presenting the work as legit! He uses excerpts from W.F. Warren, Sir John Barrow & Robert E. Peary to backup the story's approach.
Much space is used to set up the 'fact' of a Hollow Earth & Olaf's credibility.
For instance, the tale took a long time to be published - because Olaf was supposedly institutionalized, in an asylum, for many years!
Just for trying to 'share' his story...
Finally, Olaf's dying confession elicits sympathy - as dying people "don't lie with their final breaths."
Author: There seems to be little info on W.G. Emerson's life, so the following summary will have to suffice.
Emerson was a lawyer (in 1886), a Chi Town newspaper man, a Republican Party promoter, a politician, a Western writer(!) & even a criminal!!
But, Emerson quickly lost all interest in the Law & moved to Kansas. There, he became part of the Republican Party.
Then, moving West, Emerson built the North American Copper Company & the town of Encampment. Both are situated in Wyoming.
Crimes: Emerson is known to have been involved in several mining & stock frauds.
But, Emerson also committed major fraud with his small Emerson Motor Company. He sold cars that were actually 'disguised' Ford vehicles!
(Sigh. These Republicans.)

The more I consider the "Smoky gets Frostpaw sterilized against her will" thing, the more I dislike it even on a thematic level...
This book seems to be trying to put Frostpaw through an arc of learning to trust people. Riverstar magically appears in her dreams to send her to the Park Cats who are meant to teach her this lesson, but... starting and resolving that arc more than halfway through the book was sloppy, and a waste.
Instead of Smoky forcing medical treatment on her in spite of how she tells him point blank "please no," SHE should have called for the human.
A creature that the Clan cats have never trusted, that they have great reason to fear. Caught between dying with her pride like a good warrior and taking a risk on the kindness of an unknowable beast, in spite of all the betrayal, she chooses the chance.
Play it like this; Make it so the reason she becomes chosen by Riverstar at all is because he SEES this glimmer of potential within her, because of this very choice.
Instead of that bizarre opening chapter where he seems to have magically gifted her some kind of spiritual connection as a plot device, INSTEAD make it that they were sadly overseeing the end of her life. That this was her destiny, to die as a young, proud warrior apprentice. To trust no cat, as her mother told her.
But instead, she tricks the wording of the self-fulfilling prophecy Curlfeather told her. It said nothing about trusting a human!
THEN follow it up with teaching her how to trust cats again. But make the road down this character arc be something she truly initiated, instead of the weird bullshit they did with her being mad at Smoky for violating her consent while also exonerating him for "Doing The Right Thing :)"

Murayama would be the type to sort of freeze at first when he's hugged, but then he'll slowly become more comfortable and his body would relax, his mind becoming hazy at the moment and he doesnt know what this feeling inside him is and then he just melts into the hug. Leaning his body into the warmth of it, wrapping his arms around the person who initiated the hug, resting his head on the person's shoulder— just really wanting this strange relief that he never knew he really needed (or admitted he actually wanted). This could be with his close friends like Seki and Furuya, who would hold Murayama in such a way as if they would lose him at any moment. I just think Murayama is totally touch starved and deep down kind of craves physical affection but never asks for it in fear he'd look strange for it or maybe even weak, but the moment he's held in someone's arms he just completely forgets all the negative thoughts and his mind just focuses on the comfort he's feeling

Story (Chapter 11 Part 2)
Tumblr media
After going through the catacombs, you make it to the entrance of the dungeons where you meet up with the others.
Tumblr media
There you are! We thought the worse there.
Tumblr media
We're fine. We got along. You?
Smoky God: A little dinged up, but we're okay. Oz has something to say.
Tumblr media
I think I know why the Exception changed its shape.
Tumblr media
What is it, Oz?
Oz: I think it's portraying another story.
Tumblr media
And what story is that? Any information you have could be a big help, My Oz.
Oz: As you know, I'm originally from Olympus, but there's another land that lived in for a time... A land that's just over the rainbow. I went there to find some courage. Then, I met a girl who was also from another world. She was going to see a wizard to help her get back home. I went with her in hopes this wizard would give me some courage. When we got there, the wizard said that he would grant our wishes on one condition: We... We had to kill the wicked witch who lived in the western part of that world. I think the Exception is reenacting this story, taking on the role of the wicked witch.
Oniwaka: How did you kill her.
Oz: ... We threw water on her and she melted.
Oniwaka: (surprised) Is that all?
Tumblr media
I did not believe it myself when he told me the story, but every word is true.
Smoky God: So all we have to do to stop the Exception is to dump water on her.
Lupin: I don't think it'll be that easy. It may be a glitch acting as the wicked witch, it's still technically an Exception. Which mean I still have to use my Rule if I have to.
Oniwaka: He has a point. We can't mess up if we want to beat the witch and get to the terminal.
Suddenly, more guards show up.
Wakan Tanka: (determined) We better take care of these guys. That gondola must be our way out.
Lupin: Most likely. Let's go.
The battle begins.
