Het aantal inwoners en reizigers in de provincie Noord-Holland groeit de komende jaren sterk. Om Noord-Holland bereikbaar en leefbaar te houden, wil de provincie het voor haar inwoners makkelijker maken om de fiets te pakken, ook voor langere afstanden. Daarom investeert de provincie in slimme maatregelen. Ze stelt 11 verkeerslichten in Noord-Holland zo in dat fietsers vaker groen krijgen en minder lang hoeven te wachten op een kruising. Door slim gebruik te maken van de bestaande detectielussen (sensoren in de weg) bij verkeerslichten wordt voorkomen dat fietsers onnodig lang voor rood staan te wachten. Op plekken waar veel scholieren rijden krijgen grote groepen fietsers langer groen, zodat de staart van de groep ook veilig de overkant kan bereiken. Op deze manier wordt fietsen aantrekkelijker en veiliger. Benieuwd hoe het werkt? Bekijk de animatie. Het slim instellen van de verkeerslichten voor fietsers past in de plannen van de provincie om fietsen te stimuleren: het is gezond, goed voor het klimaat en neemt minder ruimte in op de weg. De provincie legt daarom ook zogenaamde doorfietsroutes aan. Slimme maatregel per kruising is maatwerk De provincie kijkt per situatie hoe de verkeerslichten voor fietsers het beste afgesteld kunnen worden. Zo krijgen groepen fietsers onder andere op de N208 bij Haarlem langer groen. Dit verkleint de kans dat de laatste fietsers uit de groep door rood rijden. Op bijvoorbeeld de N522 bij Ouderkerk aan de Amstel krijgen fietsers tegelijk groen met de auto’s die rechtdoor rijden. Het afslaande autoverkeer moet dan even wachten. Ook zijn er kruispunten waar fietsers prioriteit krijgen. Zij krijgen dan als eerstvolgende groen waar voorheen het verkeer op de kruising in een vaste volgorde groen kreeg. Dat gebeurt onder andere op de N201 bij de Cruquius. En als er geen kruisend verkeer is bijvoorbeeld ’s avonds en ‘s nachts is het verkeerslicht op de fietspaden standaard op groen zoals op de N236 bij Weesp. Alle 11 de kruispunten waar deze slimme maatregelen zijn ingevoerd staan op deze kaart. Als deze slimme maatregelen positief uitpakken, past de provincie in 2024 deze verder toe op andere kruispunten met veel fietsverkeer.
