Lingthusiasm sixth anniversary: help share the show and do our listener survey!

Lingthusiasm is turning six!

In celebration of our sixth anniversary this November, we’re asking you to help introduce the show to people who would be totally into a linguistics podcast, if only they knew it existed! Lingthusiasm is a great fit for anyone in your life who is curious about language or who likes hearing ad-free conversational deep-dives into hidden patterns in the world around us from people who are extremely invested in articulating why it’s so cool.

Your recommendations really do work (we see it in the stats!), whether it’s a shoutout on social media, sending a personal message to a friend, or sharing the RSS feed with your cool aunt.

We also love being recommended as guests on your (other) favourite podcasts! Every podcast is in a language, and we love chatting about the link between linguistics and your other favourite topics (we’ve done linguistics and science fiction/roleplaying games, linguistics and conlanging, linguistics in romance novels, linguistics and mythology, and more!).

What’s Lingthusiasm like?

Ever find yourself distracted from what someone is saying by wondering about how they say it? Lingthusiasm is a podcast that’s enthusiastic about linguistics as a way of understanding the world around us.

From languages around the world to our favourite linguistics memes, Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne bring you into a lively half hour conversation on the third Thursday of every month about the hidden linguistic patterns that you didn’t realize you were already making.

We're also doing a listener/reader survey for the first time to celebrate our anniversary this year! This is your chance to tell us what you're into on Lingthusiasm, what we could do more of, suggest topics and guests for future episodes, and also answer some fun linguistics experiment questions, which we might write up into an Official Academic Paper someday! (And either way, we'll report back on the results.) The survey is online, and will take 5-30 minutes (depending on how much you want to tell us in the open text boxes).

Hey…

It’s October 31st. You know what that means? It’s Halloween! But it’s also MLTS’ SIXTH BIRTHDAY! Hurray!

I still can’t believe I have devoted myself to this story for six exact years and still going on strong! Thank you guys so much for your support and for sticking by me through all these crazy years. The original My little test subject fic may have ended back in Christmas of last year, but as you may well know the story is far from over. I know not everyone accompanied Requiem, with it being a prequel and all, and that’s totally fine – Requiem was just meant to fill the gap between My little test subject and the sequel so you guys wouldn’t be without content the whole year, while also setting up some important character traits that will play out in said sequel.

Requiem is now officially over! I uploaded the epilogue along with a little teaser for the sequel over here.

And now, I am proud to announce the release of the long awaited sequel I know you’ve all been waiting for... The first chapter of Always Gold is now up! Along with the official playlist right over here on youtube! And for the playlist, please feel free to recommend songs!

A huge special shout out to all the lovely people who participated and submitted their OCs to make an appearance in the sequel!

Basically Each Doctor

I love doing these so I thought I'd do another one.

First: Grandpa will throw hands and kidnap girls that look like his granddaughter.

Second: Hobo and his boyfriend achieve mischief, until hobo's parents return to send him to the mega gay zone.

Third: Rebellious child is sent to time out, and he takes over local military organization. Becomes a superhero and car dad.

Fourth: Man with teeth that could blot out the sun accidentally starts the biggest war ever.

Fifth: Man who is always out of his depth tries to keep his gaggle of children alive while they drag their leashes in 20 different directions.

Sixth: Sweetest man in the universe pretends to be a dick, and flashbangs people with his shear audacious style.

Seventh: 200iq giga-brain becomes the ultimate 5D chess-master to kill gods, and gets shot as soon as he steps foot into America.

Eighth: The happiest little rambunctious puppy gets repeatedly kicked in the stomach till he gives up via the pavlovian response.

War: "We don't talk about granddad warcrimes"

Ninth: Man comes back from war and becomes a PTSD ridden uber hippie.

Tenth: The most vain man in the universe kisses everyone and is unable to get over his ex.

Eleventh: Ancient demigod looks 25 and is going to make it everyone else's problem, especially for his in-laws.

Twelfth: Your college professor casually mentions all the cool shit he did in the 70s, all while saying ACAB and dismantling capitalism.

Thirteenth: Woman shoots longing glances at another woman for three seasons, all while lying about how much everyone else is contributing.

Fugitive: Woman's appearance completely breaks established canon, but honestly worth it because she's that cool.

Seven years ago in 2016, I made a Classic Doctors line-up in a watercolor cut-out style based on the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar - but I never got around to adding in any of the Revival Doctors. Until now, when there was finally enough of them to make it a relatively even split of incarnations on both sides. Interesting to see both the consistency and the improvement side by side in the combined version.
