Work in Progress: Blanchitsu-Sister of Silence

Some Warhammer-nostalgia:

John Blanche is one of the 2D and miniature artists who has had the most lasting impact on the Warhammer aesthetic. Everyone has seen at least one of his paintings (and if not: he's the creator of the famous SoB hairstyle!) and what we now take for granted in fandom as "Grimdark" was largely built by him (whether as artist or art director).

He's been on my radar since the late nineties - his influence on comic artists like Jamie Hewlitt was a big thing for teenage-me.

Over at Mastodon, there are regular miniature painting challenges called #FediPaint in a loose, more or less monthly rhythm. And this time the theme is "Blanchitsu" - in the style of John Blanche (yes, that's a fixed term).

I'm not good enough to participate with my miniatures yet (although the Beastmen would lend themselves very well to this), so I've decided to contribute a tribute to Blanche's 2D work.

So here's a Sister of Silence - or at least the first sketch. It's my style, of course, but I'm trying to incorporate as many classic Blanchitsu elements as possible. And I'm curious to see if I can at least hint at Blanche's extremely iconic colouring!

It's going to be an exciting work.

Forgeworld’s resin humans are so fragile! The pommel of her sword snapped off, and I was super careful cutting the piece off the sprue. I reattached it but it seems off by half a millimeter or so. So frustrating.

Summary: Chris finds you texting someone.

Pairing: Chris Evans x Sister!Reader, soon to be Travis Kelce x Silence!Reader

This is part two of Silence after TWO WHOLE YEARS.

Chris came into the living room. You’ve ventured out of his guest room and have planted yourself on the L shaped couch. You’ve got Dodger right next to you with his lion. The tv is on with cartoons playing but you’re not even paying attention. Your eyes are on your iPad as you type away with one finger messaging somebody somewhere. It’s been a week since you’ve been discharged from the hospital.

“Hey, want me to type for you?” Chris asked.

You flinched but eased when you saw it was him. He came around and sat down on the couch beside you. He saw your saw your screen a little clearer. At the top was Mr. Yeti.

“Who’s Mr. Yeti?” Chris asked.

You looked at him holding the ipad against your chest not allowing him to see the message exchange. He looked at you. You’re looking a lot better than you have. The swelling in your face especially has gone down. Your still a bit puffy around your jaw and lips but that’s understandable with your jaw being wired shut.

“Y/n… is it a boy?” he teased.

You tensed up. Chris smiled and put his arm around your shoulders. He pulled you into his side. You looked at him warily.

“It’s okay, ya know,” he said. “As long as there’s no funny business going on.”

You gave him a look that he knows all too well. He smirked.

“I’m your brother, Pooh, not your dad,” Chris said.

You let out a small hum.

“Lemme at least hold your iPad for you while you text this Yeti guy,” he said.

You shake your head no.

“Please. I won’t even read what you’re texting him,” he said. “I’ll just hold it for you because I know it’s not easy on trying to hold it with your broken hand.”

You grabbed him by his chin and moved his head to face the tv. He snorted at your actions. You then guided his hand to hold your iPad. You checked quickly to see his face. His eyes are currently on the tv— he’s going to seek a look at your messages because he is your older brother and wants to make sure things are going smoothly.

You unlocked the iPad and opened up your messages again. You’ve received two new ones from your buddy. You’re quick to type out a clever response. Chris managed to catch you smiling. He hasn’t seen a smile from you in years. He does miss it.

Chris did kiss the top of your head when he noticed you weren’t texting anymore. He looked to see if you’re asleep and you are. Your lips are parted letting your wires be shown. He took the chance and glanced at your screen. A majority of its pretty innocent.

He ended up turning it off for you and placing the iPad off to the side. He then made sure that you’re covered with the very soft blue blanket.

“Sleep tight, Pooh,” Chris whispered.

Seeing the reactions to female Custodes has been… interesting. What’s really sad though is the amount of people acting like the Sisters of Silence have been dealt some savage blow by this.

Some people are genuinely acting like being female is all the SoS have going on for them. They act like you can’t have female Custodes and SoS, that somehow one makes the other redundant. I know ‘Sisters’ is in the name, but being women isn’t their job, it’s not why their organisation was founded, it’s not their beliefs, it’s not what they “do”. SoS are female, coincidentally, but female Custodes no more diminishes that than female Guardsman, Skitarii, or Sisters of Battle.

The Custodes are bodyguards and the SoS are anti-psyker hunters, but nope female Custodes are replacing SoS apparently. The SoS are all psychic nulls, but again apparently that doesn’t matter. The SoS are mute and speak through sign language, but normal talking female Custodes is still stealing their identity. It’s really telling that some people’s understanding of the faction doesn’t go deeper than the name, but they’re still getting upset at female Custodes.

Like these people are upset that SoS don’t get enough attention in lore/models, and I completely agree with that. It is really unfair, but SoS were getting fuck all when Custodes were all male too. FW updated Custodes and gave SoS next to nothing. GW updated Custodes and gave SoS literally nothing. Female Custodes isn’t going to change that. Dark Angels have got more models unique to them since 8th ed than SoS ever had. Black Templars got more unique stuff than SoS.

The SoS have NEVER been treated as well as other factions, and whether or not they might get more stuff in the future, it’s not going to be altered by the inclusion of female Custodes. No one is going “I’m going to add more models/books for the SoS, wait, actually since Custodes can be women I’ll give them stuff instead”. Nobody’s doing that. It’s “We’ve already decided on doing stuff for Custodes, but now they can be female.” SoS haven’t lost anything, they can’t lose anything when they weren’t getting anything.

It's just so frustrating to see people be against female Custodes and try to hide/excuse their distaste by pretending to be a SoS fan.

The news has reached me that there are canon female custodes, and that the reactions have been mmm well, mixed. I don’t play custodes on tabletop but i do love the faction, and i think it’s an interesting and harmless little addition to the setting. Somewhere in the mists of time some custodes put his genhanced transhuman mind to work and asked himself “What if instead of just taking boy babies for the Full Genome Restructuring Into An Exalted Demigod…what if we took all the babies.” Now we have the Golden Roughly Twenty Thousand, double the protection for the Emperor😌
