Grande began her music career at age 15 in the 2008 Broadway musical 13. She rose to fame for playing Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television series Victorious (2010–2013) and Sam & Cat (2013–2014). Grande signed with Republic Records in 2011 after label executives viewed YouTube videos of her covering songs. Her 1950s doo-wop-influenced pop and R&B debut album,[2] Yours Truly (2013), topped the US Billboard 200, while its lead single, "The Way", reached the top ten of the US Billboard Hot 100. Grande's voice and whistle register on the album drew immediate comparisons to Mariah Carey.

Grande continued to explore pop and R&B in her second and third studio albums, My Everything (2014) and Dangerous Woman (2016). My Everything experimented with EDM and achieved global success with its singles "Problem", "Break Free" and "Bang Bang", while Dangerous Woman became her first of four consecutive number-one albums in the UK. Personal struggles influenced her trap-infused fourth and fifth studio albums, Sweetener (2018) and Thank U, Next (2019), both of which were critical and commercial successes. Sweetener won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, and Thank U, Next broke the record for the largest streaming week for a pop album and was nominated for Album of the Year. The singles "Thank U, Next", "7 Rings", and "Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" made Grande the first solo artist to hold the top three spots on the Hot 100 simultaneously and the first woman to succeed herself at the top of the UK Singles Chart. Her 2020 collaborations "Stuck with U" with Justin Bieber and "Rain on Me" with Lady Gaga helped her break the record for most number-one debuts on the Hot 100, the latter winning the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Grande expanded on the trap genre with her sixth studio album, Positions (2020), which both the album and its title track debuted at number one in the UK and the US. Her collaborations with The Weeknd on the remixes of "Save Your Tears" and "Die for You" garnered her sixth and seventh US number-one singles, respectively.

Grande is one of the world's best-selling music artists; she has sold over 90 million records globally and all of her studio albums have been certified platinum or higher. She has also broken a variety of records on the Billboard chart, with her albums, songs and as an artist. Grande is the most streamed female artist of all time, the most streamed female artist of 2010s on Spotify and Apple Music, the most followed female artist on Spotify, and the most subscribed female solo artist on YouTube. Nine of Grande's songs and seven of her music videos reached 1 billion streams and views on Spotify and Vevo, respectively. She is the female artist with the most one billion songs on the former platform. Grande has been included on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world (2016 and 2019) and the Forbes Celebrity 100 (2019–2020). Grande was named Woman of the Year (2018), the greatest pop star of 2019, and the most successful female artist to debut in the 2010s by Billboard. Furthermore, Rolling Stone placed her in their list of 200 Greatest Singers of All Time (2023). Besides music, Grande has worked with many charitable organizations and advocates for animal rights, mental health, and gender, racial, and LGBT equality. Grande has also ventured into the cosmetics and fashion industries. Grande has a large following on social media; she became the most followed woman on Instagram in 2019 and has over 370 million followers as of 2023. Her fragrance line, which was released in 2015, exceeded $1 billion in sales through 2022.I

On June 12, 2013, Jungkook made his debut as a member of BTS with the release of the single 2 Cool 4 Skool.[15] Under BTS, he has sung three solo songs. Aside from singing, Jungkook has also helped produce two songs for BTS: "Love is Not Over", from the band's 2015 extended play (EP) The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1, and "Magic Shop", from the band's 2018 album Love Yourself: Tear—he is credited as the main producer for both tracks.[20][21]

In October 2018, Jungkook was ordained alongside his bandmates with the fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit by the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in.[22][23] He was appointed Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture, again alongside his bandmates, by Moon in July 2021, in order to help "lead the global agenda for future generations" and "expand South Korea's diplomatic efforts and global standing" in the international community.[24]

Whether it's an infliction of pain, an intense feeling of pleasure, or a source of immense hurt, the three vastly different reactions are common side effects of love. In fact, love has been known to cause an endless number of emotional possibilities. It is important to consider how love is able to manifest itself into the many aspects of our lives. For example, how is love able to leave us wallowing in a bed of guilt, fortitude, agony, denial, or cause an overwhelming blissful sensation? Or, in more extreme cases, how has its intense side effects been able to cause people to physically harm themselves? Never has a single word been known to both have been rooted in selfless and selfish acts, showing itself as warmth and kindness, or maliciousness, guile, hate, or abandonment. Yet, the single word, love, arguably has the most versatile meaning of any word known. The average person will agree that "love" has been overused so much so, that it's original meaning has been diluted over the years, which has resulted in an inherent change from its intended purpose. For example, it often proceeds or has been associated with statements such as, "I'm sorry, will you forgive me?" or "come on don't you love me?" Love in the context of forgiveness is vastly different from its enabling context as used in the second statement. Which context coincides with its original meaning and which has been the result of evolutionary over usage? In fact, as this essay will discuss neither statement uses or associates "love" as its original definition intended. The rest of this essay attempts to refocus our modern day abuse of the word, love, and visit its original roots.

Shawn Mendes: ‘I’m 20. I want to have fun’

Shawn Mendes is the red-hot poster boy of pop. His videos have been viewed 6bn times and he has more than 42m followers on Instagram. But don’t worry if you haven’t heard of him… just ask a teenager

Shawn Mendes is standing in his underpants in a suite on the fifth floor of a London hotel as a 200-strong crowd of screaming teenage girls gathers outside. “Everyone who doesn’t need to be in the room, leave the room,” he says politely but firmly, in a soft Canadian drawl. Pop’s current poster boy should be used to causing a stir. His #MyCalvins campaign (following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber in 2016) broke the internet earlier this year, inching the 20-year-old teen phenomenon – three US chart-topping albums, 30m monthly listeners on Spotify, more than 6bn video views – closer to tabloid supremacy and global domination.

At the Brit Awards that night, Mendes will cringe as presenter Jack Whitehall ribs him about “suspicious packages”, so it’s curious to hear him describe the Calvin Klein opportunity – and the subsequent results pored over by his 42m Instagram followers – as “a goal of mine at the top of 2018. As much as it’s a stepping stone for me to play a stadium, it’s a huge moment for me to step in front of a camera and take my shirt off. I don’t see one being less meaningful than the other.”

The air is thick with earnestness as we sit down for lunch in the hotel restaurant. I blurt out a question about whether he had to wear extra padding. “No,” he says, eyebrow raised. “They’re really good underwear.” Did they send you some free ones? “Yeah, I have boxes of them at home.” He lifts up the bottom edge of his T-shirt and pulls at the waistband of his underwear before quickly pulling his shirt back down. You’re not wearing them today are you? “Not right now,” he says sheepishly. “I should be.”

Mendes’s boy-next-door appeal and laser-guided ambition feels rather wholesome, with his sensitive, heart-on-sleeve pop-rock bops such as 2015’s UK chart-topper Stitches, positioning him as perfect boyfriend material in pop’s all important fantasy world. If Bieber is the unknowable loose cannon, then Mendes is pop’s picture-perfect head boy. But it’s clear that exposing himself so literally has its downside. “The last 48 hours have been so consuming, just reading what people are saying about me [on social media],” he sighs. Do you have to read it? “No, but there’s something about being human that makes you. I’m scared of social media and how much it affects me,” he continues. “It’s literally become infused with who I am.”

Last October he apologised to his 21m Twitter followers, claiming he was worried that what he was posting wasn’t meaningful enough. “For the first time I realised how many people are listening,” he says. He now monitors how often he goes online and tries to take regular breaks, using meditation to relax. “I don’t think of myself as conceited, but I definitely spend a lot of time reading about myself,” he says.

Mendes famously has three daily rules – going to the gym, two vocal lessons and never saying no to a selfie with a fan. He’s managed the first two so far and “took about 200 selfies yesterday”. Despite this, his rise has chimed with a shift in the upper echelons of pop – its recent exponents being anti-pop stars Adele, Ed Sheeran and (with her goofy dancing style and eternal quest for relatability) Taylor Swift, who’s now a friend. Even One Direction – whose blend of teen-orientated, guitar-led pop paved the way for Mendes – always felt like they were trying to play down the pop star element.

“The more open the world is getting, the more people are craving real,” he says. “I don’t think people want to see a made-up person. [In the past] there’s been a lot of dressing up, and I still think that stuff is amazing – like I’ll wear a sleeveless top – but at the end of it, when it comes down to you, I think it’s about being authentic.” For all this talk of authenticity and being like everyone else, I tell him, you’re also a pop star begging people to look at you. Do you have to believe your own hype? “Of course,” he says, his eyes darting over my shoulder to the mirrored wall behind. “You have to. If you wake up every day and say, ‘I’m OK,’ you’re going to just be that. If you wake up everyday and look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I’m great, let’s go sell out that stadium,’ then you will.”

You could say he’s been in motivational training for a while now, having started out as a 14-year-old YouTube star, uploading acoustic covers of songs (Bieber, among others), before switching to the now defunct social media platform Vine. He taught himself to play the guitar via YouTube tutorials at home in the small town of Pickering, Ontario, while one of his first public performances was in a plaza in Portugal where his family – mum Karen, a British estate agent, dad Manny, a Portuguese businessman, and younger sister Aaliyah – were holidaying. While his parents were shopping, Mendes hopped up next to a statue and belted out a Bruno Mars song. “I was sweating and I thought, ‘Dude, if you want to be a singer, you’ve got to at least be able to stand on this statue and sing,’” he says of that moment.

Where was that pressure coming from? “It was from myself, which is pretty much a big statement on my personality at 14 years old.”

While he says he loved school, his early fame – after signing to Island Records his debut single, Life of the Party, was released when he was just 15 – meant he was bullied. “People were cruel at first,” he says, clearing his throat and fiddling with the rim of a cup of green tea. “They just thought it was so stupid.” He’d skip school every Friday to attend influencer events in which social media stars met fans who already assumed they were friends. “I was taking 1,500 selfies a night,” he laughs. “You quickly learn that what you love to do is a job, but I don’t resent what I do. I don’t hate taking selfies.”

Success was rapid, with his third single Stitches breaking the US top five and peaking at number one in the UK. That same year he supported Swift on her 1989 stadium tour. How did he cope? “This life is more real to me than anything,” he says. “If I were to walk down the street and no one recognised me, I’d feel something was wrong. When I was really young [fame] morphed who I was. If it was to become normal, it would feel un-normal to me.”

From the outside, I say, the other recent pop artists who can relate to that are Britney Spears or Bieber, people who have had issues with growing up in the spotlight. “A couple of times I’ve worried about that, too, but outside of all this I live a really normal life,” he says slowly. “You have to make an effort to carry your own bags, drive your own car and not be afraid of the public. I don’t blame people at all who stay inside. I understand how it could be terrifying to go to a restaurant and eat because you’re scared someone’s going to take a photo of you.”

Is that more intrusive than a selfie? “I’ve been so lucky that fans have been taking photos of me eating since I was 15, so I’m a little bit numb to it,” he says, his tone rarely deviating from preternaturally calm. There’s probably an Instagram account called Shawn Mendes Eating, I joke (I check later and while there’s no account, there is a hashtag to follow). Can it feel as if he’s being watched? “I’m inherently [aware of] that all the time.” If it ever gets too much, he leaves rather than making a scene. Are you a people-pleaser, I ask? “Yeah, is that bad?” he smiles. “It can lead to failure, but if I fail trying to please everyone, then that’s OK.”

Mendes spends a lot of time contemplating people’s perceptions of him. Last year he publicly criticised a Rolling Stone cover story, expressing his regret that “the positive side of a story doesn’t always get fully told”. I assume it’s because the piece mentioned his penchant for smoking weed, a detail that had upset some fans. “That didn’t bother me,” he smiles. “Actually, I was happy about that because maybe it’s OK for them to understand that weed’s not a big deal.” He says he hasn’t smoked in three months.

Another part of the story focused on rumours about his sexuality. “For me it’s hurtful,” he says. “I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them.” (In late 2017 he posted an emotional Snapchat story: “First of all, I’m not gay. Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or wasn’t.”) He sighs and says: “That was why I was so angry, and you can see I still get riled up, because I don’t think people understand that when you come at me about something that’s stupid you hurt so many other people. They might not be speaking, but they’re listening.”

He says the reason he criticised the article was over a small detail in which he mentioned Dua Lipa and her boyfriend, and how amazing it looked to be in love. “It made me seem so creepy,” he says. “If anything, the article made me realise your career isn’t over if people think you’re not perfect.” You could see how the creepy singleton tag might irk him, and also why it might stick – a lot of Mendes’s biggest singles play on the idea of him as the emotionally needy bloke who gets messed around and comes back for more.

Are you bored of being The Nice Guy? He splutters, clears his throat and sits bolt upright. “Yeah, I am! It sounds so stupid – to be a nice person is the best thing in the world – but, yeah, I’m 20 and I just want to have fun. What I don’t want to do is live the rest of my life thinking, ‘I wouldn’t do that because I’m known as Prince Charming.’ The second that someone corners you into a personality, you don’t want to be that person any more.”

Two weeks later, Mendes is onstage in Amsterdam. In keeping with the floral artwork for his recent self-titled album, a 50ft rose snakes up to the ceiling from the so-called B-stage where he’ll later serenade the throngs of teenage fans and nodding dads with a handful of ballads. Replica light-up roses (€20 a pop at the merch stand) bob about in the dark as Mendes runs through a hugely entertaining, PG-13 simulacrum of a rock show to ear-bleeding screams (“God I’m so old,” a woman sitting behind me yells as she surveys the crowd).

Keen to further align himself with the pantheon of rock’s smiliest exponents, tonight Mendes segues from a cover of Coldplay’s big-hearted anthem Fix You into his own, the Kings of Leon-esque In My Blood, a song that surprised fans by touching on depression. Tonight it’s transformed – with the help of a ticker tape explosion – into something close to catharsis.

“There’s nothing like being on stage – you feel like Superman!” he’d said earlier, claiming it to be better than sex or any high. “My goal now is to enjoy what I do more and more because otherwise it doesn’t fucking matter. I used to think it was all about the crowd, but I have to be happy within myself.” As he takes his millionth selfie, his face radiating pure elation, you believe he might be.

Bangtan’s third studio album ‘LOVE YOURSELF 轉 'Tear'’ will be made available from the 18th of May for purchase. Within this post is everything you need to know in order to support our boys from buying their albums to how to vote on music shows. The title track and song they’re promoting is “Fake Love”.

As always we have links here to stores online that will help the Hanteo/Gaon charts. Each store online will have different ways in which you can purchase the albums, either separately or both at once. Please make sure that when you order the album, you see the Hanteo Chart symbol. ⁃⁃ The Hanteo Chart is updated in real time daily and used mostly for Music Show wins. The Gaon Chart, which counts physical/digital sales, streaming etc closes every Sunday at 12am KST and is updated every Thursday. Here is a description and why both of these charts matter.

As long as you purchase a streaming pass, and your songs stream correctly IT DOES COUNT toward any digital points for music shows.

iTunes:

‣ iTunes purchases will not affect Korean charts but help them rank on the Billboard charts (USA), and give them more exposure internationally!

The best way to get Bangtan into the Billboard charts, and also ranking highly in your countries iTunes is to buy the title track first. AFTER that, purchase the full digital album. Buying the title track and other tracks individually help towards both song and album charts in the US.

Purchasing from iTunes is not similar to Melon. Although it is possible to change your iTunes Store to US, you cannot purchase the song if you do not have valid US-issued credit card or payment method. You can however be gifted a song from someone from the US to help Bangtan get on the Billboard 200 (Albums) and Billboard Hot 100 (Songs) charts.

Purchasing on iTunes is simple: Simply search ‘BTS’ and click to go to their artist page. Then, find “FAKE LOVE” on the main page and press the price, following the prompts to buying the song.

Another way to help Bangtan get on the Billboard Hot 100 charts is through streaming application Spotify.

‘Real views’:

Youtube’s support site states: “YouTube defines a view as a viewer’s intended and successful attempt to watch a YouTube video. Views are seen via watch pages (across all apps), embeds and leanback (playlists, mixes, autoplays etc.)”

Watching the MV on Youtube contributes to the score on 3 of the following Music Shows. (The Show, MCountdown and Inkigayo). Simple steps on how to increase the YouTube plays to help them count for music shows include:

Spotify is a music streaming platform that help artists rank in the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Spotify have a direct link to Billboard. Billboard endorses Spotify on their charts and even have Spotify players that play the song on every chart. Just take a look at billboard.com and you will see for yourself. Spotify is also one of the most accessible streaming platforms that is both reliable and free.

If you have never made a Spotify account before, you will receive a free month of premium upon making one. This will be very helpful in helping the boys achieve Hot 100 status! Click HERE to create a Spotify account!

‣‣‣‣You must have an account from the US to make your streaming count towards the Billboard’s US Hot 100, BB 200, and other US-related charts.

At the same time, we recommend international fans outside of the US to stream BTS on Spotify from your own country on a separate device, so your streams will count for both global and US charts.

Spotify is available for Macs and PCs and mobile devices with iOS and Android operating systems.

If you use a free Spotify account to stream on the mobile app version, you’re unable to choose what song you want to listen to on an album, as it plays randomly. However, on the PC software version, you'll be able to play as you please, without it playing randomly or shuffle playing.

It’s also possible to use another email to get another free premium trial, so if you’re unable to buy it for the month, then do this.

The charting for Spotify and Billboard opens on Fridays 12am EST and closes Thursdays 11:59pm EST.

You can also make a playlist on premium just of FAKE LOVE and loop that. All streaming of FAKE LOVE counts since the first 30 seconds of playing the song, will be registered as a play.

Sharing the FAKE LOVE on social media via Spotify will also give them points towards other charts, such as the Twitter top tracks and Viral 50. Doing this through sharing via Spotify, or even #NowPlaying #BTS #FAKE LOVE etc will help them out. Youtube views also count towards the Hot 100 chart!

Not because I wasn't into it just because of monetary reasons. Last year after showing my toddler the anime I decided to get back into it. I bought a 2DSXL and I picked up Ultra Sun. After him we had all peope controlled by the global elites. Both bushes. Clinton and Obama.. To be fair it sounds like he has attempted to be patient for roughly 2 years (730 days,) is an incredibly massive hold on sexual gratification. I can see why this would hurt her feelings though. I would be devastated if my wife tried to bring something like this up with me. Bonus highly rofl balance talk: sometimes peeps saying maxes are only good for pushing. GIGGITY. Totally ignoring they work for defense just as well. I relate, kind of on 'auto 문경출장마사지 pilot' all the time but i seem to think too deeply all day about nothing really. I want to do more hobbies, I quit a few of my interests when i was younger and then i was afraid to start anything new. I dont want to start new deep friendships/relationship with others because im insecure that im not my best self that i could be. I am in Texas and a lot of people I have spoken to who are ex trump supporters do support him. I haven had any of those unsubscribing/video posting problems either, but I am subscribed to less than 40 people so it probably affects people with way more subscriptions. I seen others that are subscribed to more than 200 people, so I wouldn be surprised if a high sub list was part of the issue. YouTube definitely seems like it would glitch and break due to all the notifications/postings it has to give out daily to millions of people using its website.. Always thought Gamine was, like you said, eccentric and delicate. However, Halle Berry is considered a Soft Gamine and it because she has a lot of contrasting features (lush hourglass (yin), angular shoulders (yang), broad lips (yang), large eyes (yin), broad cheekbones (yang). Her features aren blended (or "middle of the road", for a lack of a better term) like a classic would be.. Lol it was an interesting point that really got me thinking. 40 points submitted 8 days agoThey been featured here before, but never as the first song on the playlist. 200k subscribers might not seem that big, compared to say K Pop Daebak 1.8 million subscribers, but being on top of this playlist seems to be a good sign that it eventually be put on that playlist as well! If you listen to any kpop at all, that playlist is going to be on your Spotify front page even if you didn subscribe, so it quite a big deal.For reference, LOONA has had (afaik) two songs on K Pop Daebak, favOriTe and See Saw.

JPMorgan Shakes Up the Race to Succeed Jamie Dimon In a position to succeed? JPMorgan Chase announced a major management shuffle yesterday, renewing chatter about a hotly debated topic on Wall Street: Who will succeed Jamie Dimon as C.E.O.? The changes may also pave the way for a woman to lead the United States’ largest bank. Here’s the rundown: Marianne Lake, the bank’s head of consumer lending, and Jennifer Piepszak, its chief financial officer, will become joint heads of the consumer and community bank, effective immediately. Gordon Smith, who has run the bank’s consumer operation since 2012 and served as co-chief operating officer and co-president since 2018, said he would retire at the end of the year. Daniel Pinto will become JPMorgan’s sole president and C.O.O. (and remains the head of the corporate and investment bank), and Jeremy Barnum will succeed Lake as C.F.O. The moves solidify Lake and Piepszak as contenders for C.E.O. The executives, both 51, are now in charge of a business that takes in more than $50 billion per year in revenue. In a memo to staff, Dimon praised Lake and Piepszak as “superb executives who are both examples of our extremely talented and deep management bench.” Dimon, 65, took his role as the bank’s C.E.O. in late 2005, making him the longest-tenured big bank chief. “The board has said it would like Jamie to remain in his role for a significant number of years,” Joe Evangelisti, a JPMorgan spokesman, said in a statement. The new setup creates an unusual situation in which two executives competing for the top job share a leadership role. That may be tricky to navigate, management experts say, and whether it’s a good test of leadership skills is debatable. Co-management can be hard to pull off. In a 2012 paper, Ryan Krause of the Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University examined how sharing power impacted the performance of public companies. Estimating the relative power of co-C.E.O.s using proxies such as tenure and stock ownership, he and his co-authors concluded that executives who had more equal levels of power performed worse than those with disproportionate power. “We interpret this as being evidence that, basically, having co-C.E.O.s really only works if they’re not really co-C.E.O.s,” Krause told DealBook. Co-leaders of a division, he said, may be more successful because they can more easily divide responsibilities instead of sharing authority. Such setups are not uncommon at JPMorgan. It could highlight the ability to work collaboratively, said Steve Odland, the head of the Conference Board and the former C.E.O. of Office Depot and AutoZone. “Whenever you’re in a C.E.O. successor position, it’s difficult because there are a lot of things that have to go right and you’re under the microscope,” Odland said. “But to do so with your competitor, and have to compete with your co-head, at the same time you’re making it work is especially stressful. Which is why it’s an interesting test, because the person who succeeds at this should be amply able to succeed in the C.E.O. role.” Is it a good idea? Dan Ciampa, an adviser to C.E.O.s and directors during leadership transitions, said that he wouldn’t recommend such a test (speaking generally, and not about JPMorgan specifically). “It may make sense to have co-division leaders or co-unit leaders and maybe even co-C.E.O.s,” he said. “But to use that as a way to determine who the next person should be to run the entire organization, to me it says that the board and the sitting C.E.O. and the head of H.R. have probably not done their homework.” Flashback: One sign of Dimon’s long tenure at JPMorgan is measured by a famous cover of Fortune magazine from Sept. 2008, featuring him and seven of his top lieutenants, headlined “The Survivors.” When Smith retires, Dimon will be the only person on the cover left at the bank. HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING AT&T investors sour on the WarnerMedia-Discovery deal. Shares in AT&T fell nearly 6 percent yesterday (and are down again premarket today), as shareholders reckoned with the possibility that the spinout of its media arm would expose issues at its core wireless business — and lead to a smaller dividend. Bitcoin’s wild ride The largest cryptocurrency’s price is down sharply again today, leaving it 40 percent lower than its mid-April high. The business case for better care policies JPMorgan Chase, McDonald’s, Spotify, Uber and almost 200 other businesses announced today that they have formed a coalition focused on “reimagining” the United States’ “caregiving infrastructure.” The coalition, called the Care Economy Business Council, is a strong signal that fixing the crumbling care systems for children and older people is essential to the economic recovery. The new group will pressure Congress to pass policies that enable workers — particularly women — to get back to work. Led by Time’s Up, the advocacy group formed by powerful women in Hollywood, the council is demanding federally funded family and medical leave, affordable child care and care for older relatives, and higher wages for caregiving workers. “What I’m seeing now that I have not seen in the many years I’ve been working on this constellation of issues is a realization by employers that they have a stake in this,” said Tina Tchen, the chief executive of Time’s Up. The pandemic laid bare the caregiving sector’s limits, particularly in child care. Many providers either shuttered or cut back on hours, leaving parents without a reliable and safe space for their children while they worked. That was a major reason that hundreds of thousands of women left the work force in the past year, bringing the female labor participation rate to the lowest level since the 1980s. For many executives, the crisis made clear that the entire system needed an overhaul, as companies scrambled to cobble together solutions such as flexible work hours and additional child care stipends. Philanthropies bank crypto windfalls Charities have an inherent interest in cryptocurrencies because, increasingly, their fates are intertwined. Nonprofits benefit from financial windfalls and recently people have been getting rich with crypto. “There’s no question” that the price of cryptocurrency is linked to the volume of giving, said Joe Huston, the managing director of Give Directly, a global aid group. Crypto is volatile, especially lately, but philanthropies have seen consistent growth in digital asset donations over time. Fidelity Charitable reported that crypto giving went from $13 million in 2018 to $28 million in 2020. Give Directly has seen a “big uptick,” Huston told DealBook. The Twitter founder Jack Dorsey gave the group $12.8 million, the co-founder of the Ethereum platform Vitalik Buterin donated $4.8 million and Elon Musk of Tesla gave “some.” The cryptocurrency exchange FTX donates one percent of its fees and encourages traders to channel returns to charity. But newfound riches donated in novel ways raise questions. Buterin recently gave $1.2 billion dollars to fund Covid relief efforts in India. The gift was in SHIB, a crypto token named after a Shiba Inu dog that’s a derivative of the onetime joke crypto Dogecoin. These tokens were sent unbidden to Buterin to bolster their value. His approach in giving them away was “impressively lightweight and fast,” Huston said, showing how frictionless crypto-based philanthropy can be. Celebrating Avicii: The Life and Art of one of Electronic Music’s Most Prolific Producers

This week, we celebrate the many accomplishments of Avicii. Born Tim Bergling, Avicii would have turned 31 years old on Tuesday, September 8th. Though his life and career were cut tragically short, Avicii left an indelible mark on Electronic music, and on popular culture. The Swedish DJ and producer died by suicide in 2018.

Avicii was born in Stockholm, Sweden on September 8th, 1989. He started mixing at the age of eight, and he began producing original music at the age of 16. By 2009 (at the age of 20), Avicii was a prolific producer, releasing music at a breakneck pace. He signed with EMI Music Publishing in 2010.

In 2012, his collaboration with David Guetta, “Sunshine,” was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording. Later that year, he worked with the likes of Madonna and Lenny Kravitz, and played Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park… he also reached 2 million followers on Facebook, for which he released the single “Two Million.” Avicii was also nominated for a Grammy award in 2013 for Best Dance Recording for “Levels.”

In his biggest year March, 2013, Avicii announced and premiered tracks from his new album, “True,” which was set to be released in September. These tracks were far more experimental than some of his earlier music, which garnered him some mixed reviews amongst critics. On June 25, 2013, Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” premiered, and instantly hit number 1 on the Spotify Global Chart. “Wake Me Up” went on to set a record of 14 weeks as the number one hit on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Chart, and became the UK’s fastest selling single of 2013. The single became a major hit, and topped the charts in over 20 countries. Avicii spent the remainder of 2013, and the beginning of 2014, collaborating with Madonna, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Carlos Santana, and Wyclef Jean, and producing the FIFA World Cup’s closing ceremony anthem.

2013 also marked the year of heavy promotion with a promotional coffee brand, coffee trucks in New York City and Chicago and the premier of the Avicii hotel during Miami Music Week. Avicii also teamed up with Ralph Lauren with their line of Denim and Supply.

In July of 2014, Avicii told Rolling Stone that he had worked on over 70 songs for his next album, Stories, which included collaborations with Jon Bon Jovi, Serj Tankian, Chris Martin, Billie Joe Armstrong, Wyclef Jean, and Matisyahu.

The Avicii hotel returned during Miami Music Week, getting a major expansion into the luxury five start SLS hotel. During the week, the Avicii Pop-Up Store at Wings also premiered.

In May of 2015, Avicii released his rework of Nina Simone’s version of “Feeling Good,” which also became an instant hit. Stories was released in October of 2015 alongside 3 promotional singles: “Broken Arrows” with Zac Brown, “Ten More Days” with Zak Abel, and “Gonna Love Ya” with Sandro Cavazza. Though it didn’t reach the same level of cultural sensation as Avicii’s other albums, Stories was the culmination of almost 2 years of work.

In 2016, Avicii announced his retirement from touring, citing health concerns. He released a few singles and remixes, and played his final live show on August 28th, 2016. In 2017, Avicii released the six-track EP Avicii (01) and said of the release, “I’m really excited to be back with music once again. It has been a long time.”

On September 11, 2017, Avicii announced a documentary, Avicii: True Stories, that chronicled his retirement from touring and features interviews from colleagues like David Guetta, Tiësto, Nile Rodgers, and Chris Martin. Sadly, Avicii passed away in April of 2018. It was reported that at the time of his death, Avicii had over 200 unreleased songs.

In April of 2019, it was announced that the album Tim, which Avicii was working on before his death, would be released in June. All proceeds from the sale of the album went to the Tim Bergling Foundation, a foundation that was created in his memory to address mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The foundation has since been expanded to include work on climate change, the protection of endangered species, and nature conservation.

What’s clear about Avicii’s life and work is that he was undoubtedly a talent well beyond his years. He left a mark on the music world that will surely be felt for generations. Although his public-facing career lasted for only 12 years, the songs and albums he produced are honestly too many to count. As is evidenced by the thousands of tributes that appeared after his death, what’s true too, is the mark he left on the people he worked with, and the people who loved his music.

HSBC makes ‘ruthless’ cuts in U.S. and Europe

The London-based bank said this morning that it planned to cut about 35,000 jobs over the next three years as it retreats from the West to focus more on Asia.“We are intending to exit a lot of domestically focused customers in Europe and the U.S. on the global banking side,” Ewen Stevenson, the bank’s C.F.O., told Bloomberg Television. He said the lender would make “surgical and ruthless” cuts to underperforming businesses.The plan is to accelerate investment in its Asian and Middle Eastern businesses, which already generate nearly half of its revenue. That’s the strategy that Standard Chartered, another London-based, Asia-focused bank, has followed.The initiative may not be enough. Shares in HSBC dropped 3 percent this morning. Alan Higgins, the chief investment officer of Coutts & Company, told Bloomberg that the strategy was “on the conservative side.”

Jeff Bezos pledges $10 billion on climate change

The Amazon chief has announced his biggest charitable donation to date, a fund to study and fight climate change, Karen Weise of the NYT writes.Mr. Bezos is a latecomer to large-scale charitable giving, starting in 2018 with a $2 billion program to combat homelessness created with his then-wife, MacKenzie.Amazon has been under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. It revealed in September that it emitted about 44.4 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2018, making it one of the world’s top 200 emitters. And employees have called on the company to stop providing services to oil and gas industries.“One hand cannot give what the other is taking away,” said Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, a group of workers protesting the company’s environmental practices.

Europe’s venture capitalists are getting serious

Atomico said this morning that it had raised Europe’s largest-ever independent tech venture fund, worth $820 million. The London-based venture capital firm’s founder, Niklas Zennstrom, told Michael in an interview that it was a sign of how the European start-up industry is coming into its own.There are now 99 “unicorns” — VC-backed start-ups worth at least $1 billion — in Europe, compared with 22 five years ago. “Companies are taking on bigger challenges, and there’s more ambition and experience,” Mr. Zennstrom said.That enabled Atomico to raise more money for its fifth fund than the $750 million it had originally planned. Among the investors in this fund are founders and early employees of Atomico-backed companies like Spotify, the payments company Klarna and the game maker Supercell. Mr. Zennstrom himself is a Swedish billionaire who co-founded Skype.But Mr. Zennstrom sees hurdles ahead:• Valuation multiples for European start-ups aren’t as high as those for U.S. companies. (There are twice as many V.C.-backed unicorns in the U.S., according to PwC.) Even so, Mr. Zennstrom said that unlike their American rivals, European start-ups were more focused on creating businesses that can become profitable.• Although Europe has plenty of gifted coders, getting them to come to a particular start-up — often in a different country — is a challenge.

Mark Zuckerberg calls for global rules for online content

While on a trip to Europe, the Facebook founder suggested that new rules and standards were needed to promote public trust in tech platforms.“I believe good regulation may hurt Facebook’s business in the near term, but it will be better for everyone, including us, over the long term,” Mr. Zuckerberg wrote in an FT opinion piece. Facebook also published a white paper with “guidelines for future regulation.”E.U. officials rejected his proposals. “It’s not enough. It’s too slow, it’s too low in terms of responsibility and regulation,” said a European Commissioner. And in response to Mr. Zuckerberg’s opinion piece, George Soros wrote a letter to the FT calling on the C.E.O. to “stop obfuscating the facts by piously arguing for government regulation” and urging him to resign.

Google Cloud Hosting, and or Compute Engine, is just one of many services provided by Google Cloud Platform. They also offer their App Engine, storage, DNS, CDN, and a multitude of other services and products. Google Cloud Platform consists of a set of physical servers, as well as virtual resources like virtual machines (VMs) that are contained in Google’s data centers around the globe. We use Google Cloud Platform’s multi-regional deployment mode. This means that you can choose a different data center for each of your WordPress websites.

Some notable companies that are using Google Cloud Platform (Compute Engine or App Engine) include Spotify, HSBC, Home Depot, Snapchat, HTC, Best Buy, Philips, Coca Cola, Domino’s, Feedly, ShareThis, Sony Music, and Ubisoft. Even Apple has been seen moving some of its services away from AWS, spending between $400 million and $600 million on Google Cloud Platform; although this couldn’t be independently confirmed.

Evernote made the decision to migrate its 200 million users. Ben McCormack, VP Operations at Evernote stated on their blog: “Evernote will gain significant improvements in performance, security, efficiency, and scalability. Moving to the cloud also allows us to focus time and resources on the things that matter most.”

1. Better Pricing Than Competitors

Google bills in minute-level increments (with a 10-minute minimum charge), so you only pay for the compute time you use. And a big bonus is that they give you discounted prices for long-running workloads with no up-front commitment required. Use the VMs for a month and you get a discount, as simple as that. This makes it perfect for startups and for enterprise IT to cut costs. AWS for example requires prepays in the form of “reserved instances” to be eligible for the discounts. And Azure only offers a 5% discount on a 12-month prepay.

Sandeep Dinesh did a good comparison recently of just how cheap Google Cloud’s SSDs are when it comes to performance vs price and a comparison against AWS and Azure. To start off, instances are simply lower in cost on Google Cloud Platform, Compute Engine alone is typically between 40% – 50% cheaper than AWS and Azure.

AWS vs Google Cloud

When it comes to Google Cloud Platform you basically get more IOPS for less than 1/3 of the cost. As you can see with this configuration below with AWS you are looking at $1,102.50/month with 3 year contract as opposed to Google Cloud’s $470.64/month. IOPS is a measurement for input/output operations per second and how often a device can perform IO tasks. In most cases, the great number of IOPS, the better the performance.

2. Private Global Fiber + Tiered Network

Alex said it best in an article about Google Cloud Platform on Techcrunch, “The Power is in the Network.” One thing that sets Google Cloud Hosting apart from some of the other players is that their network is one of the biggest in the world. Will Shulman, co-founder of MongoLab, talked about the network in a panel at Google I/O saying: “It is blazing fast. The other thing – it has a private distributed backbone between all the data centers. You are talking over Google’s backbone, not over the Internet.”

3. Live Migration of Virtual Machines

Another huge advantage for Google Cloud Hosting, especially for how we use it here at Kinsta is live migrations of Virtual Machines. Neither AWS, Azure, or smaller providers like Digital Ocean offer this functionality. So this is a very important differentiator for Google Cloud compared to other cloud providers. As a WordPress hosting provider, this means we are basically always up with our VMs, with no noticeable degradation in performance when they are live migrating VMs between host machines.

Benefits of live migrations allow for the engineers at Google to better address issues such as patching, repairing, and updating the software and hardware, without the need for you to worry about machine reboots. 4. Improved Performance

Kinsta was just recently named top tier once again in Review Signal’s annual 2018 WordPress hosting performance benchmarks. And a lot of this is thanks to Google Cloud Platform. We were the first managed WordPress host to exclusively utilize Google Cloud and are the only enterprise level host using them. And we would like to think that the results speak for themselves. Kevin at Review Signal threw a whopping 10,000 concurrent users against our servers and as he noted for the Load Storm test, Kinsta had basically flawless performance with flat average response times, minimal errors and no spikes.

5. State of the Art Security

Another big advantage is security. Choosing Google Cloud Platform means you get the benefit of a security model that has been built upon over the course of 15 years, and currently secures products and services like Gmail, Search, etc. Google currently employs more than 500 full-time security professionals. Google has continued to rapidly build out their infrastructure for Google Cloud Platform. On September 29th, 2016 they announced the locations of new strategically placed Google Cloud Regions. We are very excited to see São Paulo and Sydney included in the list as this will help dramatically decrease latency for Google Cloud Hosting customers across South America and Australia. 7. Redundant Backups

Google Cloud Storage is designed for 99.999999999% durability and has 4 different types of storage: Coldline storage, nearline, regional storage, and multi-regional storage. It stores data redundantly, with automatic checksums to ensure data integrity. The beauty of multi-regional storage is that it is also geo-redundant, which means cloud storage stores your data redundantly in at least two regions within the multi-regional location of the bucket. As it pertains to Google Cloud hosting, this ensures you will never lose your data, even in the case of a disaster.
