In this commission by @chillguydraws, I present Mrs. Sue Ping, formerly Shi-Hoo Kim. As for the added hue to her hairdo, it's a personal headcanon of mine that her kids (and future/possible grandchildren) got their quirky follicles from her (which I sort of inferred from the constant hair appointments she's made during the show). After the events of the series, she had relaxed her hair enough for the violet roots to be visible; that was the only thing she eased up on as she would later become the current superintendent of Ottington's restructured education board. Alongside her husband, she made sure that her kids would become their best selves: Li getting the help and love he desperately needed after all these years; Lee would always pass any goal expected of her (which apparently included pregnancy and paternity tests). The main times you'll see her genuinely smile require the presence of the following: (potential) daughters-in-law, grandkids, and/or non-honorary diplomas.

Apple of my Eye - Episode 3

I’m actually quite into this. I know, I’m repeating myself, but I have the soul of an old lady, so was I told when I was 12 years old and that was maybe twenty years ago. Anyways, I didn’t strictly watch the episode one shot, I did other stuff in between, and with this technique of reviewing... it seems my memory doesn’t work so well.

Mi Rae gets the job at the art gallery. The grandfather doesn’t actually dislike her that much, it’s just that she makes him think of someone else and it pains him. We’ll probably learn of this person later on.

Kang San’s father visits him to set him up on a blind date. The lady said that she’ll buy him a car if the date went well, however Kang San ruins it all with saying he’s married with a daughter and that he lives with his mother-in-law. His dad is super upset about Kang San still hung up on his disappeared wife. He doesn’t like it that he takes care of her family. Kang San won’t change his mind and will stay with them for the sake of Jan Di.

Jan Di passed her audition, even though she thought she failed it. On her way back home I guess, when she crosses the street, she’s about to get hit by a very distressed Mi Rae, reliving awful moments of her childhood before she got adopted, thanks to her sister-in-law. We don’t know yet if she stops in time of not.

Jun Pyo’s mother is really despicable. She only thinks of money and is super mean to Mi Rae, the poor thing. Actually, I love how every character is big stereotype. Mi Rae the perfect girl with a sad past, mistreated by her family members (except for her mom). The grumpy granddad. The feisty granny. The mean mother. The bully at school. Everything’s there and it somehow manages to make sense. Love it.

Weak Hero Character Names

For those who don't know, the Weak Hero webtoon anglicized a bunch of the characters' first names from Korean to English. They don't do this for newly introduced characters anymore AFAIK, but all the names they anglicized initially have been kept that way.

Since I've gotten a few people asking about the names, so I decided to compile a list of their original Korean names. You can find amost of these on their character profiles on the Weak Hero fandom page, but I figured people would appreciate having a quick reference that is all in one place. The plot of Lady Vengeance is at least as complicated and implausible as that of Park's Oldboy (2003), the film that precedes it in Park's "vengeance trilogy" that began with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), and it's made with the same attention to style. But the way it's worked out on screen though flashback dribbles of exposition feels needlessly complicated, and the culminating act of vengeance on the part of the families of the victims doesn't have the presumably intended emotional impact because it's spread out over too long a stretch. As a teenager, Geum-ja (Lee Yeong-ae) had become pregnant and, afraid to tell her parents, went to her teacher, Mr. Baek (Choi Min-sik), for advice. He took her in and not only made her a sex slave but also enlisted her in his scheme to kidnap small children and hold them for ransom. She lured a 5-year-old boy, Won-mo, into Mr. Baek's clutches, and when the boy was accidentally killed, Mr. Baek forced Geum-ja to confess to the crime by threatening to kill her own child, a daughter, who was put up for adoption after Geum-ja's conviction. Released from prison after 13 years because she convinced the authorities that she had thoroughly reformed, Geum-ja sets out to take revenge on Mr. Baek. We learn that despite her apparently angelic behavior in prison, she actually bumped off some of the more repulsive inmates, causing one to take a fatal fall on a slippery floor and slowly poisoning another, thereby gaining  the enduring support of her fellow prisoners. She calls in the favors she earned from some of these now released inmates so that she has the wherewithal to exact her revenge on the psychotic Mr. Baek, who has evolved into a serial killer of small children. The revenge, however, is anything but swift. The subplot involving Geum-ja's daughter, now called Jenny (Kwan Yea-young) by her adoptive Australian parents, feels extraneous, as does Geum-ja's affair with a young man who is the exact age that Won-mo would have been if he had lived. I suppose Park has a thematic point about the corruption of innocence that he wants to make, but it isn't integrated into the rest of the film very well. As a commentary on the nature of revenge, Lady Vengeance doesn't have the resonance of Oldboy, and despite some imaginatively nightmarish scenes it often seems like an exercise in film technique.

Apple of my Eye - Episode 2

I’m still trying out this different way of doing my recaps, I’m not so sure yet about how this is going to turn out, but I guess it makes the watching a little more enjoyable for me since I don’t need to pause every five minutes.

The problem between Jan Di and Jun Pyo is finally solved when Jan Di’s friend brings a recording of the scene that happened between the two of them. Now knowing that her son was at fault, Jun Pyo’s mom decide to try and settle amiably the conflict. Seems she’s a little ashamed. I liked how the video filmed by a nearby student resolved everything. It looks a lot like the justice on social media happening nowadays, when people just film stuff to post on their accounts instead of stepping in.

Jan Di lied to attend her audition and everything seems to go well, until she loses a boot while dancing. So when she comes back home, she’s in a bad mood. Her dad scolds her for lying and going to the audition when he told her not to. Her grandma takes her side, because she feels bad that she was insulted for not having a mom and lashes out at Kang San when he tells her they should discipline her well. She blames him for her daughter (Kang San’s wife) leaving.

Now we finally get to know what actually happen. She used to be a ballet dancer, but she gave up her dreams when she got pregnant with Jan Di. She regretted it and left to study abroad, saying that she should never had her daughter. Kang San and Jan Di still somewhat of make up.

Meanwhile, Jun Pyo’s great-grandfather (if I’m not crazy) gets injured at work because of his Parkinson. The family finally knows of his condition and scolds him for not saying anything. Mi Rae tries to take care of him, but he gets mad at her and throws on the floor the food she gave him.

One thing I like about this sitcom, strangely, is that they’re not taking their acting too seriously? If I may say so like this. It looks really genuine in a way. Especially when they kind of parody some very overly intense scenes from let’s say regular drama. It’s like they toned down everything by a notch and it’s quite refreshing.
