Hot on the heels of the discovery of a Hamas data centre in a tunnel complex located underneath UNRWA’s headquarters and an UNRWA school in Gaza City (which received only minimalist coverage from the BBC) came a story about an Al Jazeera journalist in the Gaza Strip.
“A Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera appears to also be a commander in Hamas’s military wing, according to images and documents recovered by the IDF in the Gaza Strip during the ongoing war against the terror Palestinian terror group. “In the morning, he’s a journalist on the Al Jazeera channel, and in the evening, a terrorist in Hamas!” wrote Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, in a Sunday post to social media platform X. Adraee said that several weeks ago, troops found a laptop in a Hamas base in northern Gaza that belonged to a man by the name of Mohamed Washah. Washah, from central Gaza’s Bureij neighborhood, has been featured in Al Jazeera broadcasts in recent months, with the Qatari-owned station calling him one of their journalists. Adraee said that documents recovered from the laptop revealed that Washah, 37, is a “prominent commander” in Hamas’s anti-tank missile unit, and in late 2022, he began to work in research and development for the terror group’s air unit.”
As others have pointed out, Washah’s social media accounts also include some interesting material.
Tumblr media
Two days after that story emerged, Al Jazeera reported that two of its journalists in the Gaza Strip had been wounded in an Israeli strike north of Rafah.
“Al Jazeera says two of its journalists have been wounded in an Israeli airstrike near Rafah in the Gaza Strip, with one having to undergo an amputation.
The pan-Arab broadcaster, funded by Qatar, reports the strike and identifies the wounded as cameraman Ahmad Matar and reporter Ismail Abu Omar.”
As later reported by the Times of Israel and others:
“Ismail Abu Omar, an Al Jazeera reporter who was wounded in an Israeli airstrike near southern Gaza’s Rafah yesterday, is also a Hamas commander, according to the IDF.
Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman, says that Abu Omar, in addition to working for the Qatari-owned station, serves as a deputy company commander in Hamas’s East Khan Younis Battalion.
On the morning of October 7, Abu Omar infiltrated into Israel and filmed from inside Kibbutz Nir Oz during Hamas’s onslaught.”
Footage of Abu Omar at Nir Oz on October 7th as well as documentation of his praise for the massacre committed on that day is available online.
As readers no doubt recall, the BBC has produced no small amount of content in recent months (and also before the current conflict) promoting the allegation – including from Al Jazeera – that Israel ‘targets journalists’ and whitewashing the terror links of some of the journalists killed in the region in recent months and years:
BBC NEWS WEBSITE REPORTING ON THE DEATHS OF JOURNALISTS
MORE UNCRITICAL BBC AMPLIFICATION OF CPJ MESSAGING
MORE BBC AMPLIFICATION OF AL JAZEERA’S ‘TARGETING JOURNALISTS’ FALSEHOOD
BBC NEWS STICKS TO THE NARRATIVE AFTER ‘JOURNALISTS’ EXPOSED
It therefore perhaps does not come as much of a surprise to find that the BBC has to date shown no interest whatsoever in informing its audiences about the latest two stories concerning the additional activities of some Al Jazeera journalists.

TV Show - Dr. House | House M.D. II
That's what I call a proper start to a Sunday morning!
Tumblr media
Although I didn't sleep enough because I got absorbed in a manga, after my breakfast, I immediately put on House and was rewarded with my favorite episode (Three Stories). And right in the first few minutes, we're also treated to the wonderful Sela Ward, always nice to see her.
Of course, we also find out right away why Sela Ward, who plays Dr. House's wife, is visiting him in the hospital, because of her new husband. For those who haven't slept through all the episodes we've seen before, we know that conflicts are inevitable. But they all come later, because before that, we can enjoy how House tells his story and interacts with the medical students.
Here at the end of the first season, I believe there's one more episode after this one, we already have a Dr. House who is much more complex than he was at the beginning of the season. We know some of his preferences, like that he likes to play Metroid: Zero Mission (Metroid Pinball has also been seen before) and that he likes to deal with people who are schizophrenic, as he finds their way of thinking much more interesting than that of "normal" people. We also learn more about his relationships with each team member, including that he had something with Cuddy (I think there's a funny picture later on about that). It's a first season that leaves you wanting more, and if I can get my aversion to commercial breaks under control a little better, then the last season will also be something.
In this case, I also have to admit that I find the German title of the episode a bit better than the original. Because "Three Legs" somehow has a deeper meaning than "Three Stories." On the one hand, it can't normally be about three legs. But in the episode, as House himself tells, it's initially about six legs of a total of three people. Although it evolves during the episode so that it actually ends up being about one leg each of the three people, and then again only about one leg, namely his. Then the title also has a subtly humorous note, which is disarming on the one hand but somehow also depressing when you watch the episode. But I don't want to dwell on that, because that's a golden exception, usually the original titles are very well chosen.
What is also always brought to my attention in the intro is the fact that the producer of all these stories is Bryan Singer. Yes, exactly, this Bryan Singer who brought us the X-Men movies to the local cinemas in the early 2000s and also made Hugh Jackman into Wolverine. I like it when creative people are so multifaceted!
I mustn't forget to check whether a new episode of HALO has been released this week or whether one will only be released next week. I forgot to check when the new episodes of the second season are coming out during my little binge watch this week.

Arnold Hauser Sejarawan Sosial Seni
Magnum opus Hauser adalah The Social History of Art. Ketika karya tersebut muncul dalam bahasa Inggris pada 1950-an, jauh sebelum munculnya New Left (New Left adalah gerakan politik yang luas terutama pada tahun 1960-an dan 1970-an yang terdiri dari aktivis di dunia Barat yang berkampanye untuk berbagai masalah sosial seperti hak-hak sipil dan politik, feminisme, hak gay, hak aborsi, peran gender dan kebijakan narkoba. reformasi.), hal itu menimbulkan kontroversi besar karena orientasi ideologisnya.
Tumblr media
(dari Social History of Art, vol. (‘Arnold Hauser and the Retreat from Marxism’ oleh Lee Congdon, dalam Essays on Wittgenstein and Austrian Philosophy: In Honor of J.C. Disertasinya membahas masalah sistematisasi estetika. Dikutip dari: http://authorscalendar.info/hauser.htm Read the full article

10/31/22
i’m sick on halloween D: it’s probably cuz we went to solas and it felt sickly in there bleh... i should really start wearing a mask again
the past 2 weeks were so awesome and went by so fast :O
wed 10/19 - flew back to nyc, had mughlai for lunch :D
thurs 10/20 - washed bed sheets at zip n go, got an interview from maimonides 20 minutes after sending a LOI, they said I was on the list to be interviewed anyways so that makes me feel really happy they considered my signals hehe
fri 10/21 - met joie at jackson heights station around 8pm, ate gorkhali’s jhol momos :D made the air mattress for them and coco barked from inside the cage >(
sat 10/22 - went to coney island and mini concert in brooklyn. was starting to get empty at the last show, so we left and walked around LES
sun 10/23 - went to brooklyn botanical gardens and it was raining. so zen and quiet, the perfect time for my lactose intolerant ass to blow the biggest dump in NYC... the entirety of brooklyn probably heard me drop bombs. at night we went to the sunday sqool comedy show with ashley gavin. super funny! want to go to more comedy shows while im still in nyc :D then went to mr purple and i was hungry but bubby and joie went to drink more and they got tipsy and lectured me on “networking” and “looking the part” to go up in life. UGH so annoying and i complained to sela later and i felt better and not crazy
mon 10/24 - tutored sela in the morning and she helped me with interview questions :D joie spent 6 hours just in moma :O we tried to go to itaewon together but it was closed on mondays ugh, so we tried this calm pocha place, which i thought was good but bubby was disappointed. then i forced them to go to cute asian stores with me and i wanted to try and buy all the skincare
tues 10/25 - HCA woodmont interview! i hit it off really well with the PD, the residents were more chill and serious but still went pretty well. they were impressed with my CV so that’s honestly a great feeling :D afterwards i felt so drained from talking about myself and stressing that i just called sela all day and took a nap. then joie came to the apartment after their museums for a break before going to a broadway show. bubby and i went to shop at trader joe’s and target for essentials (and we already ran out of frozen food)
wed 10/26 - joie and i went to ludlow coffee co (bleh too bitter) and central park. they bought us a biking tour and the guide was so nice and took our pix for us, i think he thought we were a couple so he kept hinting at date-y ideas like the proposal bridge LOL. im glad to know people are very lgbt friendly here :D then we went to muji, rockefeller, and tried a nasty mustard pretzel that hurt my sariawan so bad. then i forced joie to go to ulta with me and i bought the one and only essence matte powder and tropic hut body butter (smells like bum bum cream <3 ). then we tried to meet sela in jackson heights station but sela was like 5 min away already so we just met up at lex ave 63rd stop and went to chinatown. ate veg dim sum (not that great) and walked around little italy, soho, and back to our place
thurs 10/27 - joie left at like 4am, they didn’t sleep all night cuz they were so nervous lol. sela and i went to brooklyn’s prospect park and walked all around seeing pretty bridgerton-esque places. then i took her to flatbush ave and we got coffee and BEC which was so nice and refreshing. then we went to dumbo to see the views and take the ferry back to LES. we went to target to get towels and bath rug and went back home. then we had lasagna cheslea’s for dinner and went to oscar n wilde where the halloween decorations were AMAZING. and then we showed sela peachy’s and the basement. and we ate square pizza hehe and bubby didn’t get back home until like 4am
fri 10/28 - sela and i had brunch in chinatown where we ate steamed rice rolls and congee. i’m glad sela enjoyed it a lot cuz it was GEWD. then went to central park. we walked from the bethesda terrace all the way up to the tippy top. it was so pretty. then we took the 6 and F back to home, which took like 50 min holy shit. then we went to itaewon and solas, where i probably got sick.
sat 10/29 - sela and i had heaven hot bagels a pastrami and BEC. then we walked to east river with coco and she was sooo happy. it made me miss the suburbs and parks. then we went back and had ice cream and van leusen and it was amazing!! then we went with bubby to the queens night market. we dressed up as the shining twins and ate caribbean food: antiguan pasta rasta and dumplin, cambodian satay and fish amok, jamaican jerk chicken (fuckin spicy i couldnt eat it), brazilian sugarcane juice, pakistan chai. it was amazing. i love food!!!
sun 10/30 - sela’s last day :( we ordered heaven hot bagel a nova lox and caramel latte (DELICIOUS). we went to tompkin’s square park with coco and she was really good with the dogs (except one but they were also reactive). and after breakfast i had the sudden shits and raced back home with sela straggling behind cuz her knees hurt. coco kept stopping cuz she didn’t want sela to be left behind. then i dropped a dump in the apartment and we took a 2 hour nap :O and then bubby sela and i went to jackosn heights to eat gorkhali jhol momo and thukpa. SO GOOD. and then we said bye bye as she went on the q70 shuttle to LGA, and she got delayed in houston until like 12am omg
mon 10/31 - i’m sick today and slept literally all fuckin day. i feel better now and just made tea. i ate miso soup with dumplings for lunch, square pizza for dinner. i didn’t poop all day and maybe it’s cuz im sick. in good news, i got an interview for healthone aurora in colorado! i sent a LOI last week so i think they like me! bubby said he’s down to move to denver. i like the nature and parks for coco, but i feel like imma miss nyc too much. we’ll see how i feel by the time interviews are over and rank lists are due. idk if i should go for mission in panorama city tho, i heard bad things about it like the residents work more than 80 hours per week and they have call every 4 days and they answered “what do yall do for fun” with “work is fun cuz we get to learn more psychiatry” ... wtf bro it sounds malignant

Sunday With You
Sejam sebelumnya, aku akan bersiap-siap dulu agar on time tiba di sana.

Tumblr media
Jum'at, 25 Juni kemaren, gue akhirnya bisa melewati satu tahap lagi; seminar hasil. I came a long way.
Pas di rumah, I barely did anything, cuma analisis univariat sama bivariat aja. Multivariat was too scary for me.
My mental and physical health was going downhill on June, pas udah di kosan. Tanggal 16, jam 3 pagi, gue breakdown, sambil chat Li. Gue kesel banget ke diri sendiri karena otak mandeg, bener-bener stuck, ga bisa ngolah kata-kata buat bab 5, to the point where I wanted to bang my head against the wall. I was angry at myself for not being able to think, for accidentally slept for 8 hours the night before and wasted my effective work hours, for thinking that i was tired when i actually didn't deseve to even feel so and say that out loud.
It's a small mistake, tapi efeknya gue harus ulang analisis. Gue kalut, gue telfon Icha. Nangis sesenggukan. Proposal dah dikirim ke penguji soalnya. Dia tenangin gue, and I decided to just let it be.
Penguji 2 bilang pembahasan gue udah bagus.
Lega sih abis semhas, tapi ternyata masih ada unsolved issue. Sabtu kemaren, badan gue agak panas dan sakit-sakit. Trus sebelum tidur, tetiba nangis lagi. Masih ada rasa bersalah karena ngerasa capek, masih belom berani ngaku kalo beneran capek. Tapi yaudah, setelah nangis jadi lega.
Tumblr media
Ga pernah-pernahnya begitu padahal wkwkwkwk
Revisi bukan masalah, oke? Ayok kita sidang segera, tapi jaga kesehatan tetep nomor 1. Ntar kalo dah ditransfer duit, kita beli imboost.

Entertainment Spotlight: Tony Cavalero, The Righteous Gemstones
Tony Cavalero is not only an Eagle Scout and a black belt, but he's also an actor whose name you’re bound to start seeing more and more of. Best known for his roles as Ozzy Osbourne in the Netflix biopic, The Dirt, and Dewey Finn in Nickelodeon’s School of Rock, you can currently catch him playing ex-satanist Keefe Chambers in HBO’s televangelist comedy, The Righteous Gemstones. Tony took the time to answer some questions and share some fun facts (and photos) from his life.
How did you prepare for the part of Keefe Chambers in The Righteous Gemstones?
It was rad finding Keefe because I usually play very high-energy characters. Keefe is newly saved from the grips of Satan and was originally written to be older and heavier than me. I imagined him as very uncomfortable in his own skin, around the church, and just about everywhere—this subtle weirdo with very little in the social skills department. My wife and I workshopped the role together on a long road trip back from Lake Tahoe, taking aspects from a character I used to play at the Groundlings, and another from a small web series I worked on in 2009. Throw in the mullet leftover from playing Ozzy in The Dirt, and a monotone southern drawl, and boom! After my audition, I was told that Danny had found a video of a real ex-Satanist-turned-minister and that I looked just like him. So really, I think I got lucky with my “out there” appearance!
If you were to come up with an alternate title for The Righteous Gemstones, what would it be?
The Holy Shits!
If you could be transported into the world of a book, movie, or TV show, which one would you pick?
I love the landscapes in Last of The Mohicans—it would be really interesting to get to see America in its infancy (I did get my BA in history!). I enjoy films, books, and TV shows with big American landscapes. Books like Bearskin, American Fire, The Killers Of The Flower Moon, and anything by Tony Hillerman are great for that.
What about The Righteous Gemstones drew you to the role and the show?
I have been such a monster fan of the Rough House crew for so long (Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green), not to mention Adam Devine and John Goodman. It was a dream job from the get-go. There’s never been a show like this that is so uniquely American and truly pertinent right now.
What’s the most impulsive thing you’ve ever done?
That would have to be moving to Los Angeles right after graduating from the Virginia Military Institute without really knowing what I was getting myself into. I spent my first six years out here as a janitor at a big playhouse in the Valley trying to navigate the craziness that is Hollywood.
What’s the funniest photo that you have on your phone right now?
Tumblr media
I've never shared this photo before because I was working on Nickelodeon's School Of Rock at the time, which is a kids’ show. The night before my wedding, we had all our best friends staying together in one huge house in Lake Tahoe. Everyone had been drinking heavily, except for me (I don’t drink), and I decided to streak around the house with only a porcelain kitty to cover me up. I can’t blame this madness on anything but pure wedding bliss!
What are your favorite ways to waste time?
I don’t really waste time :) I love to write and create with my wife, perform, sketch, and improv comedy at the Groundlings, and read lots of horrors and thrillers. I also like to walk our three doggos, make and eat great food, and spend time with the kids at CHLA. And of course, I hit the gym every day, then the hot tub, then the cold plunge.
Is there a line or scene that you feel defines the character you play in The Righteous Gemstones?
Any scene with Kelvin and Keefe really shows who Keefe is as a person. Sweet, earnest, and so uncomfortable in himself, he is able to be honest with his “best friend” Kelvin, whom he loves dearly.
Thanks for taking the time, Tony! The Righteous Gemstones airs on Sundays at 8pm on HBO.

Sunday Never Die
Akhirnya banyak yang merasakan Sunday Never Die.
Bagaimana, enak gak? Di rumah saja?
Gak ada senin sela, semuanya Sunday.
Dimana kondisi sudah lupa tanggal dan hari.
Mungkin banyak yang memimpikan.
Tapi saya merasa takut.

Thank you for the prompt @tuffypelly! I needed the practice writing Modern!Hawke and Varric!
Prompt: “Don’t you remember the go karting incident?”
Someone broke into Varric’s apartment.
Again.
He ran through the list of usual suspects and began crossing them out one by one. Magic was clearly involved, the leftover energy gave him a bit of a shock when he grabbed his doorknob. So Rivaini was off the hook. No sign of blood or whiff of sulfur, which meant Daisy probably hadn’t come by to water the plants she insisted he needed.
That left three witches. Sunshine would have patiently waited outside, so she could be discounted. Anders... well, it could have been Blondie, but somehow Varric doubted it. Blondie hardly ever came to visit anymore, and never uninvited. His friend was too busy working himself into a frothing rage over the templars in the undercity most of the time.
So. Hawke.
Varric shoved the door open and peered around his tidy apartment. Sure, he preferred the bustling arts district to the ritzy section his brother favored, but Varric was no starving artist. Everything screamed comfort, from the plush, worn leather sofas to the rich, mahogany bookshelves lined with his eclectic collection. His laptop sat, undisturbed, on his coffee table with his empty mug from the morning still beside it.
On the other couch, however, the Champion of Kirkwall sat in a nest of her own making. She had wrapped herself up in his comforter like the apartment was freezing, but she hadn’t thought to turn on the heat, which she was more than capable of doing. She had a takeout container opened in front of her, chopsticks impaled in half eaten noodles, and a cartoon featuring brightly colored, implausibly proportioned women playing on his TV.
“Hawke, if you didn’t save me an eggroll I’m kicking you out.”
She didn’t turn from her chosen entertainment, but she waved in the direction of his kitchenette. “I brought you a whole damn meal. And beer. You’re welcome.”
“What are you watching?” He asked, shuffling off his coat and throwing it over the counter. He swaggered to the fridge and opened it, withdrawing the still lukewarm container. Hawke hadn’t been here long, then.
“Fuck if I know.” Hawke tipped her head to the side like an over-inquisitive parrot. “It’s on one of those strange Nevarran channels you get.”
He opened the container and peered into the half-eaten remains of his portion of the takeout. He glared playfully at Hawke, who’d finally turned to watch him as he discovered her treachery.
“I was hungry.” She defended with a sly grin, folding her arms on the back of the couch and resting her head on them. “Where were you?”
“Tracking down those ingredients Blondie wanted for his ‘make my demon cat less crazy’ spell. Do you know what Sela Petrae is made of?” He muttered darkly. Hawke grinned evilly.
“Why do you think I said I’d help him find the Drakestone?”
“I hate you.” He groaned, rubbing his forehead.
Hawke smiled, suddenly sweet. “No you don’t.”
He didn’t, but he wasn’t going to admit it after finding out he’d spent all morning asking for crystallized urine. He grabbed his own chopsticks from the counter and ambled over to Hawke on the couch, collapsing beside her.
“You worried about him?” Hawke asked, slim fingers worrying the frayed edge of his comforter.
“Nah.” Varric lied easily. “He’ll be fine. He’s just having a mood.”
“Yeah.” Hawke lied through her teeth too. “I’m not worried either.”
They needed a change of subject. Varric gestured with his shoddy utensils at the TV screen. “Can’t afford your own cable?”
“Like you’re paying for cable, serah.” Hawke huffed, settling back into the cushions and resting her head on his shoulder, an easy, light pressure that felt as precious as gold.
Varric waited, spinning the silence out until Hawke finally relented. “I’ve been having nightmares again.”
Nightmares. Cards spelling out portents of doom. The same refrain now for weeks. Kirkwall lurching into the next disaster, but none of them any wiser as to what it was. Hawke stared, unseeing, at the TV, while she recounted her dream. “I’m at city hall, standing on top of that awful dome with the naked statue. But the statue isn’t there, it’s me. I’m encased in bronze just like it is, and the metal is melting, scorching my skin. I have wings, but the feathers are falling past my fingertips and I know I’m going to fall. The world is on fire underneath me and I... I’m watching from the center of the flames.”
“One question.” Varric couldn’t bear to see the strain weighing her down, making her look old beyond her years. Shit, she was just twenty-five. Too young for all this, by far. “That statue on top of city hall is naked Hawke. Out of author’s curiosity...”
She laughed, like he knew she would, swatting him with the edge of his own blanket. “You’re awful. My premonitions of doom are jokes to you, is that it?”
They weren’t, he’d seen too many of them come true, but he also knew by now they couldn’t stop them. Worrying themselves into an early grave wouldn’t help. May as well go laughing.
“Andraste, Varric. Get me out of this place.” She swung the blanket off the couch and stood, a bundle of nervous energy. “I’ll text Fen and Merrill. You grab Bela. Let’s go do something fun.”
“Hanged Man is right downstairs.” Varric offered. “I think the special tonight is their own special brand of watered down...”
“For fuck’s sake. No, I don’t want to drink.” She babbled, wrapping strands of dark hair around her fingers. “Let’s do something exciting. Oh! The aquarium, down at the harbor. Let’s...”
“Rivaini’s banned.” Varric smirked. “Someone caught her teaching a man to fish behind the shark tank, if you catch my drift. Besides, Broody will complain the whole time about the smell.”
“Ugh. Fine.” Hawke sighed. “The Rose has...”
“A two for one special for templars right now.” Varric advised cheerfully, careful to note the tension that immediately rose in Hawke’s shoulders. “Best leave Daisy out of it if we go there.”
“Alright.” She huffed. “The amusement park...”
Varric held her gaze and raised one solitary eyebrow. “Don’t you remember the go-karting incident?”
Hawke bristled and crossed her arms over her chest, staring down at him. “That whole thing was blown wildly out of proportion.”
“I’m still paying bribes for that mess so Aveline doesn’t find out. The fact that you didn’t get tossed in the Gallows that night is a miracle.”
Hawke waved his concerns away dismissively. “Details.”
“We’re emphatically not welcome at the amusement park, Hawke. Cops will be called. We’ll have to explain ourselves to Aveline. I’ll develop ulcers.” Varric bemoaned.
“Your chest hair will wilt and fall out. Dogs will howl in the street.” Hawke collapsed back on the couch, dramatically, half on top of him. She nearly knocked his noodles from his hand. “Varric, I’m dying of boredom. It’s an ignoble end for the champion of Kirkwall. Do something. Anything.”
He sighed wearily and sat his container on the table while Hawke’s eyes glimmered expectantly. He drummed his fingers on the table lightly, rearranging his schedule in his head. “Bianca.”
“Varric?” The AI answered brightly. Hawke perked up immediately.
“I need you to make arrangements to rent a car under one of my pseudonyms. A fast one, something sexy. We’ll bring it back late Sunday night.” Varric rubbed his stubbled jaw thoughtfully.
“Modified for Dwarven use?” Bianca chirped.
Varric looked at Hawke. “You gonna drive?”
“If it’s sexy, of course I will.” Hawke purred playfully. “Where are we going?”
“I’m gonna let the humans take the wheel, Bianca.” Varric stretched his arms above his head. “Work on cancelling whatever shit is on my calendar tomorrow.”
He wrapped one heavy arm around Hawke’s shoulders and gave her a comforting squeeze. “We’ll go wherever you want. Caveat is, I’ve gotta be back on Monday.”
“Important meetings to avoid?” She teased, pulling her phone out of her pocket.
“You know it.” He yawned into his other fist. “There’s a music festival in Ostwick on Saturday. Casinos in Markham are always a good time. I’d even let you drag me to Starkhaven.”
“If we go to Starkhaven, we’ve gotta take Bethy and Sebastian. I could use a damn break from their canoodling.” Hawke tapped away at her phone. “Who’s playing in Ostwick?”
“Fuck if I know.” He was far too old to be keeping track of that shit.
“You’re so helpful.” Hawke sighed. “Bianca?”
“Chantry Oblivion, The Infamous Nugs, Refuse Project, and Tool of Anarchy.” Bianca offered. “There are smaller, lesser known bands at side stages.”
“Ugh.” Hawke wrinkled her nose. “Markham it is then.”
“Too much heavy metal?” Varric picked his chopsticks back up with his left hand.
“If I wanted to listen to people screaming I’d go to the Gallows and stand between Orsino and Meredith.” Hawke grumbled. “Bela’s in. So is Merrill.”
Of course Rivaini was in. She’d be at the door any second, bag already packed. Varric shoveled another bite of noodles into his mouth and watch as Hawke looked up, eyes fastening on the windows lining his apartment, the ones looking out onto the broad swathe of shops and galleries. Her face went slack.
“You should put a piano there, Varric.” She mumbled.
He nearly choked on his mouthful of noodles. “What? For stone’s sake, why? Rivaini would just be bringing men in here whenever she wanted the experience of fucking on it instead of making the trek to your place.”
Hawke shook her head, frowning, before dropping her head back to her phone. “I don’t know.” She sighed, rubbing her temple. “It was a thought. Something with Ostwick. It’s gone now.”
Thank Andraste for that. Hawke resumed her grin and punched him lightly in the shoulder. “C’mon then. Let’s pack up your chest hair and go.”

Ed Harris Has No Idea What’s Happening on Westworld Either
Ed Harris has enough iconic characters in his 40-year career to make other actors jealous — and that was before he added Westworld’s Man in Black to his repertoire. We’ve learned more about Harris’s character, the ultimate player of the game, in season two of HBO’s epic drama as he has progressed deeper into the park amid a robot uprising. In Sunday’s episode “Vanishing Point,” Westworld reveals the most traumatic moment of William’s life — the suicide of his wife, Juliet (Sela Ward) — and pushes him to the absolute edge of cruelty and sanity: After shooting his own daughter, Emily (Katja Herbers), he’s last seen slicing open his arm to see if he’s actually human. Ahead of the episode, Vulture spoke with Harris about “Vanishing Point,” why he’d never want to direct an episode of Westworld, what he thinks of the show’s fandom, and why he loves Atlanta.
Westworld is a famously secretive show. How much of William’s arc do you know in advance? And how does that affect the way you play the character?
The first season was different than the second season. The first season was full of surprises as to what was revealed to almost all of us every episode. We found out things in like episode five, six, and seven and were like, “Wow, that’s news.” The second year, I knew the path that my character was on and where I was headed.
How is this project different from others you’ve worked on?
I’ve never really done this kind of episodic series, so that’s different unto itself. And the length of the season is pretty long. The first year was ridiculous. We stopped and started again — six, seven, eight months. You work two, three days a week max, some weeks you don’t work at all. And this particular show is so complicated. There’s so much being shot. The end of the second year, they had three or four crews working on different episodes. I’m glad I’m not the person trying to keep track of it all.
When even the writers aren’t sure of the backstory, how does that change your approach?
Even when they are sure, they don’t tell you. [Laughs.] I would say, “Hey, look, I just did 125 performances of a play in London. I knew what was going to happen every night. And I was still very present and fresh. You can let me know whatever you want to.” What I didn’t know, I didn’t know. I was going episode by episode, particularly scenes, characters, who I was working with, and what was going on. I didn’t really fret about what I didn’t know because I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
More in the moment.
Very much so. For me, anyway. I took it a script at a time, scene at a time, line at a time. Be present and real and tell the truth.
What’s the most challenging part of this role?
In terms of where it’s going, I guess the difficult thing is just gauging that and trying to understand it. For instance, the episode Lisa [Joy] directed, episode four, she was great to work with because she knew more about [William’s] intent than I did. She was very helpful, in terms of “this is what’s going on inside of him now and this is where it will lead.” When you play a character, you try to get as deep in there as possible. When certain things are revealed to you, it’s very helpful.
How much of the buzz around the show do you pay attention to? The fandom is pretty vocal.
Absolutely none. My wife, who’s a news junkie, will say, “Ed, they’re writing about blah blah blah,” and I’ll say great. I’m very happy it’s a successful show and I love working with the directors and the cast, but I don’t really pay attention to all of the guesswork and what people are trying to figure out.
Is this true across your career? Do you read your reviews?
I really don’t. I remember things that were said to me when I was 28 doing theater in L.A. that I don’t need to have in my head, you know what I mean? If you’re doing a play today in New York, you can’t help but find out if it was positive or negative.
Did you discuss the character at all with Jimmi Simpson? Compare notes?
A little bit. We have a good relationship. I said, “Anything I can help you with, let me know.” He would email me some questions every once in a while, but I didn’t even know there was a younger me until I saw a guy walking around the trailers and said, “Who’s he?” “That’s you.” “Oh. Really? Thanks for telling me.” I think Jimmi does a great job establishing the whole history of this guy.
What did Sela Ward and Katja Herbers bring to “Vanishing Point” that made the episode different?
It’s nice to be out of the Man in Black suit and just be William, the family man, however poor he is at it. Sela was brand-new to the whole situation, so you just try to make somebody like that as comfortable as possible. Work with them. Have them welcome. Get rid of whatever nerves they have. Katja is great. She’s not afraid to ask me things, acting questions. I love talking about it. If she has something that’s bugging her or is stuck in something, we can discuss it.
The episode is about obsession, especially the kind that can blind us from what really matters. Have you ever been obsessed?
I was definitely obsessed with Pollock in the ‘90s, but it was a good obsession. I wasn’t blinded by anything. Let’s see. I like to get into things. I like to do things well. I can get pretty easily obsessed with something I care about, but not necessarily blindly.
Do you have any character or story input on Westworld?
Hmm, we probably had some discussions. Never any major points of disagreements. I did say in one public forum, “I don’t want to be in a samurai suit and I don’t want to be naked.” There are two things I suggested.
How do you pick parts at this point in your career? What’s important to you?
What’s important to me at the moment, which I will know in the next few days, is if I can get financing for this film I want to direct in August or September. It’s a Montana novel called The Ploughman — Robert Duvall, Garrett Hedlund, my wife Amy [Madigan], my daughter [Lily Dolores Harris]. I wrote the screenplay and I’ve been fighting to get the money I need. If I don’t, we won’t be able to make it for a while.
Why is that so important?
Well, I’ve only directed two movies and I haven’t directed in ten years. I really love doing it, and this is a novel that I think could make a really cool movie. I adapted it a couple years and I’ve been trying to do it for the last three years. I really, really, really want to do it.
It sounds like a big, challenging project. When you’ve accomplished so much, are you still looking for things that challenge you?
Yeah, definitely. I just did this play in New York, Good for Otto, the new David Rabe play with my wife Amy. And it was definitely a challenge. A 14-character play. Every night, you’re out there and you’re trying to make it work. I still really enjoy what I do. The acting part of it is more fulfilling in theater than in film work, in a certain way. One of the things I love about directing is you’re constantly focused. You’re constantly occupied. For instance, in Westworld, I’m on set two days a week, and then I may not work for two weeks. I may not know I’m not working for two weeks because they don’t know yet. You’re on set for 12 hours and on camera for ten minutes. It gets a little bit old after a while. You try to keep a good attitude.
Would you consider directing an episode of Westworld?
Jon [Nolan] and Lisa mentioned it to me a while back, but I don’t think I’d be a good director for Westworld because I have a hard time understanding it. [Laughs.] I’m as confused as anybody else watching this thing. I don’t always know what’s going on.
Do you watch your past work? If The Rock is on cable, do you watch it?
If I’m flipping and I happen to see it, I might watch it for a little while. Just for fun. I won’t hunt it out to see something that I did.
What’s your airport question? What do people recognize you for and what do they ask you when they do?
It’s a wide variety. Sometimes people come up and say something like, “Milk Money is my favorite movie.” “All right, I’m glad you enjoyed it.” [Laughs.] A lot of guys go “The Rock! The Rock!” Or I’ll hear, “I really liked you in The Hours.” “Pollock is my favorite movie.” Now Westworld. More people have probably seen that than all the films I’ve ever made. It’s a little bit strange, but it’s alright. You get used to it. I kind of skulk around. I don’t ask to be recognized. I’m always wearing a hat and glasses. I don’t mind if people are polite about it.
You’ve been acting for 40 years. How do you think film and television have changed?
You’ve got, what, 500 scripted shows? I was talking to Amy the other day, and we get all these Emmy screeners in the mail, how could anybody possibly watch all of this stuff? They should have categories. Emmys for HBO. Emmys for network. Emmys for Hulu. That’s the main thing that’s changed — the amount of stuff being put out there is amazing. And in film, it’s all tentpole business. You go to a ten-movie theater and eight of ‘em cost $200 million to make. It’s very different.
So, how do you find what’s good through all the clutter?
There are a lot of good things. I was watching Atlanta last night and I just think the originality of that show is beautiful. You never know what’s gonna happen week to week. It’s so quirky and fun. It’s cool. That’s one of the good things. There are a lot of really good things written, produced, and directed that would never be done in film.
Do you think TV is at a more creative point in its history than film?
You know, there are so many independent films being made that you don’t even know about, I can’t really say. I think there’s a lot of wonderful, creative work being done. I go out the Sundance Film Lab every June if I’m not working. They’re very creative. They’re wonderful.
What’s next? Hopefully the Montana film, right?
If it doesn’t happen, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll keep working outside in my yard.
Is that what you like to do?
Yeah, I got some acreage. That’s what I like. Be outside. Close my mind.
