One of my favorite sports photos. You the sense of Secretariat’s incredible speed, and I love Ron Turcotte’s expression. He’s checking the time, and he’s not believing what he’s seeing.

If you've never seen Secretariat's run at the Belmont Stakes, you owe it to yourself to watch it.
This was a truly amazing horse, and this race was his (triple) crowing achievement.
He won this race by 31 lengths, a little shy of half a mile. The whole race is only a mile and a half. It is the absolute antonym of the term "close race".
I'm amazed none of the jockeys killed themselves getting off of their horse, thinking it had stopped.

SALUTING SECRETARIAT: Fifty years ago, a chestnut Thoroughbred with three white socks became the first horse to finish the Kentucky Derby in less than two minutes—and went on to dominate the Preakness and Belmont Stakes, setting records in all three that still stand today.

Fifty Years Ago Today
Still the greatest horse race in history (in my opinion)
Here is the scene of the race in the Disney movie Secretariat, which they filmed beautifully!
For those wondering, my Chester has Secretariat on both sides of his family tree. Granted, it's not unusual these days to have Big Red in a Thoroughbred's pedigree, but I still take great pride in it.

On the eve of Secretariat's 1973 Belmont, sportswriter Red Smith asked Charlie Hatton of the Daily Racing Form, "How did he work this morning, Charlie?"
Hatton replied, "The trees swayed.”
