Billie Jean King defeated Bobbie Riggs in straight sets to win the so-called 'Battle of the Sexes'. (Yes, she was allowed the doubles alleys but that patently didn't matter). I was tending bar in a sports bar/meat market in Denver (anybody remember the Bull & Bush?) and every TV was on the match.
The atmosphere slowly changed from raucous chauvinism to stunned silence as the whuppin' unfolded. People forget that in the early 70s there was a grim recession which pretty much ended the 'women's lib' movement as women were forced into the workforce (and bras were required).
In 1973 women couldn't open a bank account in their own name, or have a credit card. The 'weaker sex' wasn't a throwaway line, it was a belief. This night was one of the first cracks to appear in the macho world. As the Virginia Slims ad had hopefully said a few years earlier -- "you've come a long way, baby". There was/is still a long way to go.

I previously did part one of a lengthy post about Barbie's careers and it occurred to me after posting it that I did not address Barbie's other major career: athletics. And the main reason for this is that it is hard to distinguish as a single "career".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you break down each sport none of them touch the top careers, but "professional athlete" probably does - the only problem is determining when Barbie is meant to be depicting a professional athlete, or when she is a hobbyist or amateur.
Tumblr media
Breaking down times Barbie appears to be depicted as a coach or instructor of any kind of athletic endeavour (including e.g. dance but not including non-physical pursuits like art or cooking) my count comes to 15 - putting it in frequency between veterinarian and actor.
When I tried to break down all other depictions of athletics, I lost count as I crossed 50. Assuming Wikipedia is accurate, the most common sports seem to be cheerleader, tennis player and gymnast with 10 each - 14 for figure skater and 12 for gymnast, if you count the Olympic variants.
Tumblr media
This puts them above astronaut in terms of frequency, and figure skater then comes equal with veterinarian.
Once again I can't help but notice that there's a gender bias here - cheerleading and gymnastics both are female-dominated sports.
Tumblr media
Tennis is a bit of an outlier - I don't mentally associate tennis as a particular female sport, but I do know that there are a history of extremely strong female proponents of tennis as a sport for women, and some of the best and certainly most famous tennis players in the world are women.
