So, in the "Vanny" ending of HW2, it's presumed that Vanny/Vanessa is able to overpower Glitchtrap and defeat him using the power of the AR system and MXES. What's interesting to me is that in that ending, when you hand over the Glitchtrap plush, it's specifically to Moon, who then brings it to Vanny before she crushes it.

You cannot tell me these two don't have Some sort of connection. (Obviously the Sun-Vanessa // Moon-Vanny comparison is obvious. People assuming one of them is evil while they're really being controlled and manipulated by outside forces--The Mimic.)

It could be suggested that Moon, like Vanny, was using his own position as "the bad one" to trick the Mimic into trusting it had full control over him. Which I would find to be a Very interesting idea.

Or maybe I'm just too damn invested in these jesters, who knows.

The story is about a teenager killing himself and the kid he bullied (Evan Hansen) pretends he was the dead kid’s friend to make his family feel better. And also for attention a bit, also to get with dead kids sister.

the story is LITERALLY about someone pretending to be friends with a dead person after they died to get pity points.

for forever in particular is an INSANE pick from Scott. Like. this song is Evan Hansen singing about all the things he and dead kid did, and he’s lying about all of it. It seems like a pretty romantic song if you don’t know the context but it’s just Evan lying about what he and this dead kid did together

and then only us is a love song between Evan and dead kid’s sister. Who breaks up with him by the end of the musical after she learns he was lying. And they only got together because Evan lied about being friends with her dead brother

I am kind of fascinated by the Hornblower-not-matching-his-setting, though. I think that's actually been one of the things that I've thought about the most, especially in books where it's been particularly egregious (Beat to Quarters/The Happy Return, Ship of the Line, etc.). Did Forester just happen to stumble upon a brilliant character and, not realizing what a brilliant character he was, just carry on unknowingly writing him into his Swashbuckling Adventure Stories? Did he know that Hornblower was so delightfully complex but didn't know what to do with him? Did he know what to do with him but couldn't? It's also interesting to think about in the context of canon—how much of the Hornblower we see is also distorted through the lens of being a Hero of Our Glorious British Empire? How much more cruel or ignorant does he become from other perspectives? Yes, he has moral dilemmas, but if we step outside of the moral dilemmas as the books present them, what other narratives might we see?

#this is what i mean by these books not being easy reading for me #like idk man they should not be thought provoking but sometimes reading things by guys you dislike makes your brain muscles stronger #when i say 'reading between the lines' i do not just mean on a queer level #actually a good deal of the reading between the lines i've done has been with all the people he's interacted with #and the way the narrative sets up particular moral dilemmas in particular ways to serve particular plot ends #but in reality i entirely disagree with everything that's going on there and it's fun to think about what happens when you break free #of those dilemmas. except it's also a lot of work #like augh. these books are extremely taxing i can easily read them in like a day but thinking about them takes all my strength #and then on top of that they make me insane i have to put the book down and scream every five seconds at just. #song of the day #I'm still thinking about the Country Songs About Country Songs #this is actually a cover too though I never hear the original around anywhere #(it's by Darrell Scott who is also the originator for 'You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive' #turns out he's got a bunch of songs that got picked up and made somewhat more popular in the hands of other folks. an interesting legacy) #the best lines of this song to sing are also the bits About Country Music--well the whole song's about chasing the love of it #but this bit is bemoaning the kids these days you know. country music isn't what it used to be. why back in my day etc etc #it's so so so much fun to sing too because you get to exaggerate your 'I think's until they rhyme with 'Hank'. excellent work #'we listen to the radio to hear what's cookin / but the music ain't got no soul #now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard / they got money but they don't have Cash #they got Junior but they don't have Hank / I think I think I think / the rest is a long time gone' #it's fascinating to me to think about these songs in (saying 'historical' here is giving me psychic damage but) historical context #because the Darrell Scott original for Long Time Gone came out in 2000 and The Chicks released their version in 2002 #so they were talking about the trend towards American jingoism in country music of the time #versus like Waylon Jennings in 1975 'Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way' #(I typed that and /then/ went back and looked up the release date and I'm so proud I got it right) #already bemoaning the state of country music in the 70s versus good old classic country like Hank Williams Senior sang #(Hank Jr covered Waylon's song in 1981. like yes it's a tribute to his father but also Hank Jr was a big push towards outlaw country #and has a few pretty famous songs himself about not singing like his daddy did. it just seems a strange choice to me) #and then Eric Church put out 'Lotta Boot Left to Fill' in 2009 calling out the shallowness of the country music scene of the time #(talking some only-thinly-veiled shit about a few of his peers in the process) #and then he released 'Stick That In Your Country Song' in 2021 and that /definitely/ put some backs up #that one's a less directed but more direct call-out if that makes any sense #no lines that are direct references to other artists' songs but stronger sentiments overall #not just general 'y'all are getting shallow prioritizing good times and high sales over genuine heart and integrity of craft' #but some straight up 'you have forgotten the face of your father' shit towards country artists and fans alike. the whole industry #a very good righteous-anger song

i have so much work to do for finals season which is frustrating bc on the one hand i'm very glad all my classes have project-based finals where i get to be creative instead of just doing an exam or a paper. however. i have a bad habit with every project-based final ever of accidentally getting an idea that's way too ambitious and creating more work for myself than i need to do

however this semester even tho i fell into that exact same trap my two most elaborate final projects each involve 1. editing a video essay which contains an interview i did with paul bellini and at least 45 seconds of it are bellini talking about why he thinks i have great potential as a comedian, and 2. editing a ten minute reel of the documentary footage i got on tour with scott. which of course involves rewatching various videos of me and scott being extremely chaotic together. so i stay winning ig
