Dear Gus & Magnus,

Mom worked today, so we went to the Compound. Uncle Walt went into the hospital last night with atrial fibrillation, so that was the news of the day. They're doing lots of tests on him. We played and played, and then ate and ate, per usual.

Magnus had a bowl of homemade ice cream at the table, eating next to Nene and her bowl of ice cream. He got interested in her bowl, so she shared small bites with him. Then he pointed to the largest scoop of ice cream in her bowl and said, "What about that big one?" We all laughed.

Gus didn't eat the cheeseburger Nana made him, saying he wasn't hungry. But when I told him I was about to get ice cream and he wasn't because he didn't eat lunch, he came in and ate the entire burger. This is a common occurrence these days, though cheeseburgers and pizzas are the two foods he usually eats without incentive.

The average risk is 27.2%, where mine is 36.5%. Followed by age-related macular degeneration (6.5% vs 8.4%), colorectal cancer (5.6% vs 6.9%), chronic kidney disease (3.4% vs 5%), and restless leg syndrome (2% vs 2.5%). But I've got a decreased risk of coronary heart disease (46.8% vs 33.6%), gout (22.8% vs 17.1%), venous thromboembolism (12.3% vs 9%), and Alzheimer's (7.2% vs 4.3%). Stay tuned for actual results!

Space Wars Quest for the Deepstar | Trailer, Poster & Images

SPACE WARS: QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR, starring Michael Paré (STREETS OF FIRE, EDDIE AND THE CRUISERS), Olivier Gruner (NEMESIS, SHOWDOWN IN MANILA), and Sarah French (PRETTY BOY, AUTOMATION).  The movie is set for digital release on May 2nd, with some theatrical play dates beginning April 21st, and has just been selected for screening at this year's Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival.

The film concerns a father-daughter team of space scavengers who must race against a band of evil mercenaries to reach the legendary treasures on board a lost mythical freighter.  Their quest will force them to navigate a universe filled with giant monsters, aliens, robots and a mortal enemy seeking vengeance.

The movie also stars Tyler Gallant (ALPHA WOLF), Rachele Brooke Smith (NIGHTMARE SHARK), Anahit Setian (AUTOMATION), Jed Rowen (BLIND), Elise Muller (DOLLS), and Sadie Katz (WRONG TURN 6).

In recent months, the film won the Golden Marquee Award for Best Feature Film and the Outstanding Producing Award at the Zed Fest Film Festival.  It also won the Gold Award for BEST Sci-Fi Feature at the Hollywood Independent Filmmaker Awards and Festival, a Gold Award and Silver Award for  Feature and Directing at the Hollywood Gold Awards, and an “Outstanding Performance” Award for Sarah French and Diamond Award for “Best Actor in a Sci-Fi” for Michael Pare’ at the New York Best Actor & Director Awards.

Garo Setian, producer / director of the award-winning sci-fi film AUTOMATION, directs and edits from a screenplay by Joe Knetter (BLIND), based on a story by Setian and Knetter.  Producers are Jeff Miller (THE RUSSIAN BRIDE), Robert Parigi (AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.), ‘Evil’ Ted Smith (GUARDIAN OF THE REALM), Ben Stobber (DEATH CLUB), and Joanna Fang (BRITNEY LOST HER PHONE), along with Garo and Anahit Setian, Joe Knetter, Sarah French and Bill Klinakis.  Miller also executive produces with Ronnie D. Lee (THE TOYBOX).

SPACE WARS: QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR is a co-production between Hungry Monster Entertainment, Millman Productions, and Ron Lee Productions.

Michael Su is Director of Photography, Anthony Pearce is Production Designer, Jo Anna Heckman is Costume Designer, ‘Evil’ Ted Smith is lead prop fabricator, Steve Clarke and Paul Knott provide the visual effects, Jeff Farley handles practical creature FX and the music is by Joel Christian Goffin.

SPACE WARS : QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR - Review

SYNOPSIS:  Father and daughter team, Kip and Taylor, are space scavengers racing against a band of evil mercenaries to reach the legendary treasures on board a lost mythical freighter, Deepstar.  Their quest will force them to navigate a universe filled with giant monsters, aliens, robots and a mortal enemy seeking vengeance.

REVIEW: In an age where cutting edge digital effects are available to the novice of filmmakers, SPACE WARS : QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR has some practical elements that make this film feel reminiscent of the Roger Corman school of filmmaking.

The film looks great. The cinematography looks great as it blends visual effects with passable sets, some interesting props and desert locations reminiscent of the first season of “Star Trek.” The space crafts could have looked a bit stressed given the battle sequences and the creatures were interesting, as were their fight sequences. The sets seem to be rather small and when more than two characters were in a scene it looked cramped and that an actor could easily end up pushed out of the scene.

The screenplay is a basic quest plot with a family angle added. There are numerous “winks” to classic sci-fi films. Everyone is after Captain Kip, and his reputation overshadows his daughter.   The humor is a bit dry and when multiple characters are in a scene it feels flat. It seems that every character has a background story and they all get their moment to fill in the details. I wouldn't say it was bad; it comes off utilitarian and as exposition to fill in the plot gaps.

This is an interesting ensemble cast. Veteran actor Michael Paré anchors and delivers the majority of the one liners. Given his previous screen roles you would assume he would lead some of the action sequences, but ends up with only one fight sequence. His co-star Sarah French, who plays his daughter, gets the majority of the action sequences. Actress Anahit Setian adds some comic relief while Olivier Gruner, with his accent, plays the principal bad guy. The performances lack a bit more energy and I am not sure if it is due to a lack of caffeine or direction.

I enjoyed Joel Christian Goffin’s score. It easily could have been derivative of other sci-fi scores, but has more of an action film feel. It adds depth to the action sequences with lyrical and playful movements and underscores emotional scenes.

This is Garo Setian’s fifth film directing. A filmmaker since 1994, the majority of his credits are in editing. His work on SPACE WARS : QUEST FOR THE DEEPSTAR elevates the production values of the film. The performances could have used a bit of vibrance. The “Space Wars” in the title doesn’t feel relevant, but I understand the reference on several levels. There is an aspect to the film that also reminded me of the classic sci-fi TV series of the 1970’s such as “Space: 1999,” “The Starlost,” or “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” to name a few. It’s a family friendly film that might offer you a trip down memory lane while entertaining younger audiences, but sophisticated teens might easily turn to their smartphones given their exposure to more sophisticated film franchises and television.
