They’re inaccurate, trust me I know. But the medals the aviators in Top Gun wear are cool and have meanings and map out a person’s military career.
Many caught my eye, but one in particular had me thinking, the Humanitarian Service Medal. In my research I found a table of approved operations for the HSM award put together by the government. That means he would have had to participate in and assist in one of the operations on the list. On the list I searched for one that caught my eye from the late 70s to early 80s, prior to Top Gun where Iceman and the others are seen wearing them, and one stood out.
Hurricane Iwa Relief 1982 (Hawai’i, US)
Tumblr media
Hurricane Iwa was one of if not the worst hurricane Hawai’i had experienced up to that point in terms of damage. It also happened to be the “first hurricane to hit Hawaii in 23 years” according to The New York Times.
It was the final storm of hurricane season, occurring just before Thanksgiving on November 25, 1982 with winds of up to 110 mph. There were widespread power outages across several of the islands and very few structures had flashlights or candles, let alone backup generators.
Tumblr media
Ignoring the timeline of their careers in terms of specific years because it doesn't make sense to begin with, I'm picturing Iceman, Cougar, Goose, and Slider at the Academy or Flight School having just seen the news of the hurricane on the TV in a common space. Ice is in total shock because he and many others he grew up with all believed the islands couldn't be touched by hurricanes. There certainly hadn't been any hurricanes while he'd lived there and there hadn’t been any ever longer before then. Hawai'i was the one place that felt like home and Ice was watching his home be destroyed by Hurricane Iwa.
He decided right then and there that he had to do something, and because all of staff liked him he was able to get the day before Thanksgiving off. But his friends knew that Hawai’i was important to him, maybe not aware of just how important but they knew it was the only place he talked about fondly, the only place he’d share memories and stories from with a smile.
He never asked for them to come with him and miss their own Thanksgivings but they had hearts of gold. Nick volunteered first, his caring soul had seemingly infinite amount of kindness and compassion for helping others. Bill and Tom were close, like brothers, so of course Bill was going to go with. And Ron shared a bond with Tom, knowing how important it was to have a stable home.
And so they all flew out to the west coast and caught a ride to the island on a seaplane Tom’s friend typically used to fly around tourists but was now using to bring much needed supplies to those who need it. It now made sense why Tom had experience flying seaplanes. They met up with some of his old friends and helped out where they could, reuniting people who had been separated from their loved ones, delivering supplies, etc.
They couldn’t fix everything in those couple of days, the residents would be clearing debris for months following, but Tom would never forget all that they had done for him that week. And despite the devastating nature of the event, that Thanksgiving would go down as one of Tom’s favorites, surrounded by friends and friends he considered closer than family.

where do you find articles or personal essays to read? and also do you have any favorite sources for news? i want to read more but i’m having a difficult time finding sources 🤍
I've answered this just recently but here's a more complete list for essays from places I visit most often (favourites are marked **)
LitHub**
Electric Literature**
Guernica Magazine**
Hazlitt**
Longreads**
Pangyrus
The Dial**
Bloodknife**
Aeon **
The Marginalian**
Asymptote Journal
N+1
Nautilus**
Quanta Magazine**
The Believer
Ordinary Plots**
The Point Magazine
The Baffler
Paris Review (Redux newsletter is good for things usu behind the paywall)
The New Yorker
The Artifice
The Collector
The Rumpus
Catapult
Tin House Archives (the online section is no longer running but past publications are still available)
Additionally, highly recommend switching to Mozilla Firefox and trying the "Pocket" feature on their homepage: it collects links to articles across the web on topics that are either trending or based on the Pocket suggestions you usually click on. I'm on private browser 99% of the time but there's still 2 or 3 articles at least that I'm always interested in and I love it!
Some other places I read things: Poets&Writers, Atlas Obscura, The Guardian, The Independent, New Scientist, Al Jazeera, The Atlantic, BBC, National Geographic, Wired, NY Times, GQ, NPR, The Irish Times / Independent, etc., I don't have favourite news sources as a rule since I usually read 2 or 3 articles on the same topic from different places depending on what it is (I don't like relying on single sources). But on the whole this covers most of what cross my orbit unless I'm looking for something specifically 💗

A Letter to Rupert Murdoch Upon His Retirement
[Note. Read past the first line--which is meant as sarcasm.]
Dear Mr. Murdoch: I wanted to write to you to thank you for the impact you and yours have had on my life. I once lived peacefully in a neighborhood of people from varied backgrounds. Back then, I never knew nor cared what people’s political affiliations were. In fact, even when dating, asking someone to label themselves D or R would have seemed nonsensical. Thanks to you, half of that neighborhood no longer speaks to the other half. Prior to 2016, I used to attend a family reunion picnic in Pennsylvania, never caring if some of the people were particularly religious. Well, I would like to thank you for your hand in radicalizing and reinforcing perplexing beliefs in about half of the reunion participants. Now the reunions are barely attended and the family has divided into a feud. I want to thank you for the cousins and friends who defriended me, online and in person, when they fell victim to the dark rhetoric you peddle. Convinced now that their lives are under threats from trans criminals and vicious migrants, they are completely unaware of how they’re economic interested are being robbed by a different source. Thank you so much for your enduring spirit of divisiveness. I hope the money you enjoyed while alive was worth all you stole from society. Mostly, may the hatred, division, suspicious, distrust, judgement and malignancy you leashed on us be returned to you a thousand fold….and may your nursing care be delivered with the same love for humanity you left behind. --GWE, NY, commenting on a NY Times article: Rupert Murdoch to Retire From Fox and News Corporation Boards

have you written anything about tattoos? is that relevant? don't know how your niche lines up with generic "sailor" tradition, but wikipedia simply says on knuckle tats that deckhands may get "HOLD / FAST" as a charm to support their grip on rigging, and i thought that was kind of cute.
I haven't written anything myself, mostly cos if you throw a stick out in the internet you'll find any number of articles about the symbolism of sailor tattoos, like hold fast and pigs and roosters and swallows and all that!
In my narrow window (the middle decades of the 19th century), I don't see tattoos mentioned all too often, compared to late 19th and throughout the 20th century where they became more common. For instance, this register of seaman's protection certificates (which are admittedly limited in the scope of things, since they're only from a few specific ports) from 1796-1871 rarely list tattoos as distinguishing marks, beyond the odd mention of being marked with an inked anchor, eagle, or letters here or there. Here's a neat jstor article (if you have any more of your 100 free monthly articles to read with a google account) that goes into late 18th-early 19th c tattoos that has some tables and visuals. The research was also done using seaman's protection certificates, with the following stat:
"The SPC-A records start in 1796 and include tattooed men born as early as 1746. There were 979 tattooed men out of a total of 9,772 men whose records survive from 1796 through 1818.26 These men were marked with a total of about 2,354 separate designs."
So, not a large number, but also 10% isn't insignificant. The protection certificates while a reliable source, also only describe the man in one specific moment. I'm sure a few of those men who just have their moles and scars and crooked fingers listed eventually picked up a tattoo or two in their time. Most journal keepers perhaps didn't think it important to mention who had tattoos or what of, though the typical motifs of anchors, nautical stars, girls, religious & patriotic imagery, etc. were certainly a part of the visual language at this point. Whaler William Abbe who sailed in the 1850s, devoted considerable attention to describing the physical appearance of some of his shipmates. In one instance, he wrote about the tattoos of one 'Johnny Come Lately' or 'Jack Marlinspike' (Real name, John Hewes of Buffalo NY)
'from beneath this cap his face looms out - while beneath supporting his comical head is a bare neck and breast — hairy + brown —the upper timbers to a stout hull of a boat that boast a pair of arms all covered with India ink tattooings — the figure of American Liberty — Christ on the cross — an American Tar holding a star spangled banner in one hand + a coil of rope in the other — a fancy girl — + anchors, rings, crosses, knots, stars all over his wrists + hands — the memorials of different ports he has visited — for Jack has been in all kinds of vessels from a man of war to a blubber hunter — + has consequently been to many ports.'
From the logbook of another whaler who sailed in the early 1840s, James Moore Ritchie, he had a page of his drawings with prices included. This potentially may have been a tattoo flash sheet for his shipmates:
Tumblr media
American whalers also noted the tattoos of indigenous people who had signed on to whaling vessels, particularly in the South Pacific. William B. Whitecar, whaling in the 1850s wrote: "Several New Zealanders in the respective crews of these vessels attracted my attention from the tattooing on their bodies" making mention of "figures on their face and breast".
I'm too sleepy to have a conclusion lol. Tattoos! They existed! Though perhaps not as ubiquitously as the pop culture sailor designs would imply, at least prior to the late 19th c.

On this day, 30 April 1923, radical Jewish actor Al Lewis, best known for portraying grandpa Munster in the popular 1960s sitcom The Munsters was born in Brooklyn, NY. His mother was an immigrant garment worker who took him on May Day protests in New York City as a child. By the time of the great depression, he was a convinced socialist involved in supporting tenants and the unemployed. He told a journalist: “During the Depression, people were getting evicted, ten a day. We used to come along and break the lock and put the furniture back in again… We would storm the Home Relief Centres, that or this person didn't get a cheque for $8 or something, and get hit on the head [by police.]” He stayed true to his beliefs until his death in 2006. The funniest thing is watching people cling to articles with no real credible sources that Jikook spent no time together in Japan and stayed in seperate hotels and ate alone. LMAO then left to go to another town and spend no time together. Disptach literally said Jikook were going together to shoot a documentary TOGETHER. We know that is not the real reason, but there is no way in hell they are gonna set Jikook up in different hotels, just for them to meet up to film whatever it is they need to film. How fucking dumb are you people? Insecure jikookers, antis and tkk are all losing their fucking minds and making up scenarios at this point to explain away Jikook's gayness. Acting like while JK is filming a performance for a show, that Jimin can't sight see. Clinging to articles with no real confirmation, making up scenarios about it being only for work. Laughable to think they would not be at the same hotel. They are fucking bandmates what would be the big fucking deal. They have always stayed at the same hotel. So suddenly since they travel together alone, its different? Don't make me laugh. Of course they stayed in the same fucking place. What a bunch of braindead desperate idiots you are. NEWSFLASH. JIKOOK ARE QUEER and their company is gonna protect them. They literally gave them a show so they could spend some ALONE time together before enlisting and they are.
Just say you're on the edge of jumping cause. in the last few months back back you been hit with.
Letter (featuring JK with romantic lyrics)
NY/CT/Silver Day (just the two of them)
JK's Jimin lives (focused only on JM not your fav)
The Bed live between Jikook & Jk begging him over.
Tokyo (alone trip)
Sapporo (alone trip)
Jeju (Vminkook trip)
Busan Chuseok (ALONE whale drawing together/boating)
Jk watching all of Jimin's content, singing all of Jimin's songs. Not watching your fav.
JK alone White Day spoiling Jimin's songs 4 hours, when he could have been with your fav while Jm was out of town.
Jikook's Tokyo trip being called "Real Love" and they coincidentally returned there TOGETHER during the anniversary month of GCF Tokyo.
Jk's brother posting a pic of what looks like Jimin's hand during family game night and got y'all so insecure y'all wrote a whole desperate wattpad about matching floors/walls with Tae's wall picture and Jk's brothers floors & that TK must have eat together at JK's brother house, only for Tae to actually be standing at a golf course posing and the golf course gave a shout out to Tae.
And the Granddaddy of all. JIKOOK ENLISTING TOGETHER CAUSE THEY DON'T WANT TO BE WITHOUT EACHOTHER. When your fav could have enlisted with Jk, like you dumbasses believed for years.
Taennie pictures, Taennie videos. Taennie in Jeju. Taennie in NY together. Taennie in Paris together holding hands. Tae in Jennie's bed. Taennie wearing matching Jewelry and couple shirts. Jennie slapping y'all with pictures shutting down cosplayer theories.
I mean, at this point, go ahead and jump bitch. Leave, don't come back. There is nothing for you here. Your ship is not nor has it ever been real. You are staying to troll & for attention cause you're all pathetic lifeless losers. You know you have nothing left. You are here to prove Jikook is not real, so we can sit in the same miserable sunken boat as you, but we never will. PERIOD. You are all on your own.
AND THAT'S ON PERIODT

Cut the (Ghenea) crap
I have been anticipating since at least last Friday the very recent rumor overdrive about S and Mrs. Mădălina Ghenea, Romanian Horizontal Extraordinaire and I howled like a pack of hyenas in the dull silence of my flat.
Of all the rumors featuring S and divers representatives of the International Fitness Harem, this one stroke me as the most ridiculous ever. Downright scraping the bottom of the barrel, here, to be honest.
Now, as all of you know, I happen to be Romanian and if anything, you should at least grant me the benefit of a flawless knowledge of the terrain, so to speak. And as far as erotically ambitious Romanian chicks go, let's just say I am a sweet summer child, compared to this one.
Mădălina hails from Slatina, a small town in Oltenia, one of the most fascinating parts of the Romanian Southwest (I have a good quarter pint of Oltenian blood myself, so I think I know what the hell I am talking about: quick-witted, ambitious people, with a devastating, sarcastic sense of humor). She comes from virtually nothing: a working-class family of former farmers drawn to the nearest town by the quick and demented industrialization of the country during the Sixties, which is to say, the Lumpenproletariat our German friends can immediately relate to. But when you spend your childhood in the dull and poor anonymity of a non-descript block of flats (matchbox upon matchbox upon matchbox - think of it as a dignified favela of sorts), the only thing you want to do is to get the damn out of there, at all costs. Which, I have to say, she brilliantly and ruthlessly managed to, almost in record time. Granted, she is beautiful (to me, she is very cliché, but for any foreign male she is a Wanton Goddess of Sex, I suppose) and she does have the street smarts to safely get her through any urban jungle of this planet, too.
You can peruse her war credentials here, for a quick overview of the character, if you really, really, really need to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%83d%C4%83lina_Diana_Ghenea.
I will just add (and you will have to trust me on this one), a couple of things:
Cynically speaking, she could be a decently plausible beard for S. After all, she did beard for di Caprio (an info I just corroborated over the phone with a friend who is a cinema & TV journalist, back home). Problem is, a woman like this is way over budget. I am afraid The Boy doesn't qualify, bless his heart: too meh for her eclectic, but high-end tastes (local cardboard millionaires, Bulgarian tennis players of the light mafioso type, Philipp Plein, Italian TV beaux and yup, Gerard Butler - but it did not end amicably, enough said). You have to understand that woman saw it all and she won't settle for a pap walk in the pishing drizzle of GLA, or even NY. This one knows perfectly well diamonds are a girl's best friend. And if you doubt me, maybe you won't doubt her, when she declared three days ago for the Daily Fail something along these lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[source, LOL: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12681539/EDEN-CONFIDENTIAL-Sexiest-woman-world-Madalina-Ghenea-yearns-real-man-stealing-hearts-Leonardo-DiCaprio-Gerard-Butler-Michael-Fassbender.html]
Read my lips: not going to happen. Not in a million years, not even for the sake of the fucking Narrative. Not even on a desert island. Never. Nuh-oh. No way.
At any rate, if God knows what sick plot twist happens, you'll learn it here first, probably: the Romanian gossip press would put to shame poor Deux Moi, with its needlessly chatty, exuberant, salaciously detailed style.
So I will say again here what I did say in a comment to an Anon who brought it up first @bat-cat-reader's :
TERMINAȚI CU TÂMPENIILE. Which is simply translated as CUT THE CRAP.
Of course.

How did we end up with people believing he has a house in Upstate New York (UNY)?
This happened because people are determined to make LQ out to be liars. They said that LD saying the house is in UNY is confusing to them because they received the same pics of the his house in July from their source. So they quickly questioned that maybe their source had the location wrong but they also said they received documentation that he owns the Carlisle house months before that. They do not believe the house is in NY or that the LD spread is someone else’s house because the following asks show that. I think the house is his and LD lied about the location and the AD feature has been scrapped because Chris doesn’t want it revealed that it’s his house. I know that’s a lot to believe and at first I didn’t believe it was his house but over time I saw enough info to think it is. There also are some things to question like if it wasn’t his house why didn’t LD reveal the location when they first posted it like every other house they’ve worked on ? And why when they did post that they were working on it they were near Carlisle?
Yeah, but if there won't be an AD article, why did L&D need to lie about the location? They could've simply not written the location down and talked only about the house and the interior, or they could've written Carlisle, since if there's no article, most people won't know or believe it's his.
The whole Carlisle house thing is still a big topic in the fandom since some believe it's his and some believe it's not his. So they didn't need to add a fake location and lie about the whereabouts of the house since most people either don't know it's rumored to be Chris's or don't believe it.
His addresses are online. People can look it up and find it with the smallest effort, so if he wanted to protect the privacy of the Carlisle house, maybe he should've started with asking Tara to remove the address.
I don't believe this privacy shit, especially when it comes to something that involves Alba. Everything is supposed to be so private when it comes to their relationship, yet it never is. This wouldn't be either.
I once again don't question LQ but their sources, but I don't believe in something I haven't seen, so if someone can actually show me a single piece of evidence that the house is his (and I mean something that actually proves it's his, not the same trust thing again), or if somebody shows me some actual evidence of him renovating that house for himself and Alba, then I'll believe it. I'm not saying that the latter is not true, even though I find it very unlikely, but I don't believe anything without seeing it with my own eyes.

Up to three people who worked at the hospital were trying to access Catherine's medical records........... as was announced just a couple of days ago.....I'm thinking that Catherine's video address to the world about her cancer today was necessitated because they found out that the access had been successful and uncontrollable American media were going to tell the world anyways and they wanted to get in front of it........ all the signs were there..... "sources" saying that Catherine's surgery was more serious than first admitted, the "sources" saying that Catherine was not coming back at Easter. I cannot imagine how frustrating this has been for William and the kids and for the entire Middleton clan and all their super loyal friends to see how Catherine has been treated on social media and not be able to defend her. My anger today was palpable but they must be incandescent. And here comes Harry & Meghan with umpteen articles to grift publicity for themselves off Catherine's news. Catherine's video today was so raw, clear, heartfelt, sincere, kind, and gracious but because of the world's reaction of compassion, she has maybe unwittingly propelled herself into the superstar stratosphere. When the entire world collectively emotes for an individual, there is no going back...and that is what happened... ...... and I cannot imagine that Charles/Camilla, William, Harry & Meghan, or her Middleton family can be happy about that for their own cross-purposed reasons.......... I'm going to pray not just for her speedy recovery, but for everyone around her who will have to adjust their thinking to keep her safe now that she is a superstar just like Diana.
I'm not convinced an American publication was behind the privacy breach. The only time American media has scooped the BRF is when Meghan was leaking but we know she's been cut off from the family - she and Harry admitted it twice this week (first in the People article earlier in the week, second time in today's NY Post article).
Remember:
French journalists published Kate's topless paparazzi photos
Australian journalists leaked about Harry's deployment
Australian radio journalists talked a nurse into breaching Kate's medical privacy when she was having George
Spain leaked Spare early
Camilla Tominey/UK scooped Harry and Meghan's relationship
Dan Wootton/UK scooped Megxit
I feel like an Italian reporter might've done something too, but I can't pull enough details out of my memory to be able to search for something.

Empress can you give me a summary of that article you have shared???
Or an anon? Sorry, but I don’t know what’s happening with my internet, isn’t opening any link 😭… now I’m curious about the article
NY Post reached out the NYPD for comment and here is the tea:
"And while the probe found “reckless,” “unacceptable” behavior by paparazzi — Harry and Megan’s security contributed to the conditions by not adhering to an NYPD proposed stop, police sources said."
“[The Sussex’s ] reluctance to go to the planned stop, with paparazzi, was a contributing factor. Harry has been insistent someone be arrested — that requires evidence which we don’t have at this time,” said another source, referencing how the NYPD and royals conferred during that incident about a planned destination where cops could control the traffic flow.
“The individuals [paparazzi] operated vehicles, scooters, and bicycles in a manner that forced the security team, which included an NYPD Lead Car, to take evasive actions on several occasions and a circuitous route to avoid being struck by pursuing vehicles or trapped on side blocks,” it continued, noting there was “sufficient evidence” to arrest two people for reckless endangerment.
However, a subsequent letter also entered into the filing — which sources say was sent in error by law enforcement officials to Harry and Meghan’s security detail — created confusion by suggesting two suspects had been identified and could face arrest for reckless endangerment over the high-speed chase.
On Wednesday the High Court declined to award Harry the security he wanted, but the inclusion of the letter — produced by Harry’s own lawyer, according to the Daily Beast — seemed to provide a silver lining of vindication for the royals.
That vindication has proven to be short-lived, however, and could instead back the ridicule the royal couple faced after the incident.

Seymour Hersh has the number of the CIA on the Nordstream pipeline explosions.
The reaction of the media establishment to completely ignore the Hersh piece before going all in on a narrative that makes no sense whatsoever just shows the level of control exercised by the political-econonic elite and their willingness to completely stifle and ignore anti-establishment voices.
How coincidental that exculpatory articles (there's literally zero evidence in the articles themselves) for US responsibility in the Nordstream pipeline explosions should just magically appear a week later in the pages of the NY Times in the US and Die Zeit in Germany at the exact same time?
In these articles they claim that a small "Pro-Ukrainian" group somehow boarded a tiny sailboat with 2200lbs of plastic explosives, tanks and diving equipment, as well as drills, welding equipment and more into one of the most surveilled water bodies on the planet, and dove down into the deepest section of pipeline in the Black Sea to setup these explosives and escape back without anyone noticing, and all without formal training.
Now compare that to Hersh's story and YOU consider which one makes more sense:
According to Si Hersh's source, a team of Navy divers working with the CIA and Norway used the cover of Military games going on at the time to secure access to the location with the cover of the NATO forces operating in the area. They set the explosives while diving with overt permission to be in the area to perform an exercise. This is backed up by radar that tracked the ships in the area at the time as well as the overt permission the diving crew had to be operating in the area.
Not exactly an unbelievable story knowing the history of terrorism by the CIA. The establishment's narrative around the Nordstream pipelines is a joke. It doesn't even stand up to basic common sense.
Sorry Bidenites, you'll have to do better than this

So I saw the instrument ask and I hope this is cool to drop this question I’ve been puzzling over. If not just ignore this. I don’t have anyone else to theorize with.
I read a fic where all the au! Skeletons end up in the og world on the surface (classic scenario.) They use nicknames for each other but they have to register “legal” names with the government (for jobs and licenses etc.) Sans and Papyrus are already taken so they use other font names as for it. Ever since I’ve read it I can’t decide what names each would go by and I want your opinion.
There are only two I’ve decided on:
Swapfell Sans - Garamond
Underfell Papyrus - Roman (from times new Roman obvs)
But I’m going crazy trying to decide on any others and I seek your counsel.
I have a list of possible fonts but I don’t want to drop it on you because this ask is already kinda long but if you do want it I’ll send it. Sorry again for the text dump.
IT'S ABSOLUTELY ALRIGHT <333 I'd love to see if I can help out any :o!! (*grabby hands* GIMME LIST. I LOVE LISTS.)
What are your criteria and thoughts for picking fonts👀? Is it just Vibes or are there any specific reasons for the ones you've chosen so far :?
I really like Roman for UF!Papyrus... sharp, tight and snappy- full of straight lines and points... free of frills and loops but still stylish in it's own right! Also somewhat disliked in certain spaces PLUS it has the inherent correlation between the Romans [empire] and UF!Papyrus' role in the royal guard !
Tangentially related, I found an article by the NY Times (coincidence? I think not!! /lh /j) that's just all about Garamond (the font), and it's especially fun to read with the context of Swapfell!Sans
"And where some see elegance, others perceive fussiness. There’s a stereotype associated with the sort of person who loves Garamond: The Garamond Guy, if you will, is irritatingly uptight, so certain of his own profundity that his words must be conveyed with the weight of a 500-year-old French typeface."

A wild about post appears!
Me
Hey! Call me Cactus. They/them, late twenties. I also run Direct Action for Hope, for petitions/campaigns/protests that don’t fit on a good news blog, as well as my own takes and activism.
Queer, trans, disabled, white, USian, for context. (Please let me know if I accidentally post something offensive, btw! I promise I have like. an actual ability to take that kind of feedback gracefully and work to remedy the situation)
 Some Info about This Blog
Actual good news only!
No heartwarming stories that aren’t actually news. No stories that other sources THINK are heartwarming, but that are actually super depressing and dystopic!
All websites/sources are at least preliminarily vetted by me
If I don’t think a source and/or a news story I find is accurate or reliable enough, I find a new, better source with a new, better article
Relatedly, any links that have the url web.archive go to an Internet Archive copy of a paywalled article. Usually this is the LA Times, NY Times, or Washington Post. Not a weird suspicious link, I promise!
All posts are cited and dated at the end!
All posts should be tagged, including for major/common content warnings. I can’t promise that I won’t miss any warnings, but I am definitely keeping an eye on this
Filter the tag “not news” if you only want to see the news articles/posts
Feel free to send me articles to look at or submit posts! I’ll vet these before I feature them. That said, you might be waiting A While, because despite many efforts to the contrary I am the worst about checking/answering messages. Sorry about that
Posts are generally long because I have Many Words And Endless Details Disease. Hopefully the thoroughness and the bolded highlights make up for that
A couple people have asked me if I could share their donation posts, so I wanted to pin this up: I’m sorry, but unfortunately, I will not be sharing any donation posts, because I don’t have the time or skills to vet all of them and weed out any potential scams. If you’re struggling, please check out this post, which lists communities designed for donation posts and mutual aid. You’re much more likely to get help there than on tumblr. You can also find other mutual aid resource lists and wikis here, here, and here
If you’re struggling with depression or anxiety, especially around climate anxiety or climate grief, there’s a really, really thorough directory of crisis hotlines by country that you can find here. Seriously, they have so many countries I wouldn’t have expected them to list - try it, if it might help
Tip Jar
I put a lot of work and passion into this blog—and a not inconsiderable amount of time. Also, I’ve been too disabled to work much at all for most of the past year...rip. (but thankfully doing better now!) So, if you want to support my work, you can buy me a coffee!

I will be posting good news (as much good news as there can be in this sort of situation) about the ongoing genocide in Gaza, because one of the most important ways to help is to refuse to be silent. Palestinians in Gaza have asked us to please keep talking about it, that it really does help, so I’m going to listen.
And honestly, my disabilities significantly interfere with my ability to take irl action like going to protests, so using what platform I have here really is all the more important to me. (Though I am also setting a notif on my phone to remind me to call my representatives every few days, and I encourage you to do the same if feasible.)
All that said! It is completely legitimate to need a break from horrific news (a huge part of why I started this blog), and it’s also legitimate to say “I need to find out about this stuff Not from my tumblr dash.”
If news about the war/genocide (esp on social media specifically) is making you spiral and shit, then I genuinely encourage you to filter out these posts. I’m not judging. I have significant filters around what Israel/Palestine stuff I see on here myself, because I want to be very intentional about the times I do engage with it. (Which is every few days and via the Actual News.)
I’m committing to fact-checking this stuff before posting, fyi, even with reblogs.
So, tl;dr:
I will be posting about Palestine and Gaza
I will still only post good news, eg: about successful protests, aid reaching Gaza, progress toward ceasefire
I’ll only post actual, concrete news, not just Politicians Saying Words
If you need to not find about this shit from tumblr and/or my tumblr, then filter out the tags “Palestine” and “cw war”
If you don't want to see my posts on this blog about the Israel-Palestine War, then block the tags "Palestine" and "cw war"
if you need a break, then take a break

There are a lot of reasons to be upset with James Somerton, but weirdly the part of that video that got to me the most was the part showing Somerton plagiarizing the article that talked about the mistreatment of Koreans under the Japanese occupation in his AoT video.
Because I did watch that video because this is a topic I wanted to see a large youtuber talking about, especially since a lot of anime youtubers I saw never seemed to acknowledge that criticism. I came out of Somerton's video thinking "...okay, not exactly what I wanted from the video, but at least he mentioned the horrors of the Japanese occupation of Korea?"
So seeing that this section was just James soullessly reading someone else's work describing this history...how can someone do that? I'm probably just hyper sensitive to this issue specifically because I grew up hearing about how people in my family, some who are still alive to tell the story today, were directly or indirectly affected from the occupation. The trauma is still rippling through my family, compounded by the subsequent war. And even though the ripples are fainter now, I can still see the trauma.
I don't know how someone can take someone else's writing about this history and regurgitate them so soullessly. How can you talk about the destruction of language and culture, torture, human experimentation, and comfort women without feeling anything? Specifically, without feeling shame from using that writing to make Content?
Anyway, I'm fully aware that this is a "me" problem and I'm just extra sensitive to this (also I didn't expect to have to confront this topic today lol). There are bigger issues in the video, of course. This is just the thing that I can't shake out of my brain.
Also here's the article that was plagiarized and here is the blog post quoted by that article that goes more into this history that comes up a lot in the video. It's pretty good, but it does use Wikipedia as its main source. It was written in 2007, and the blog's analysis style has gotten much more thorough since.
There is also this fantastic NY Times article about the occupation. I just erased a much longer response talking about the article, so I'll just say that it resonated lol.
I'll shut up about this now. Needless to say, I feel kinda stupid.
