-To make it easier you were one of Mary's close friends. You supported James when he was in aid and trying his best to make his wife happy until her last breathe. Your interactions with James was...not awkward it mainly, because of Mary. Though you can sense a tension coming off from him like avoiding eye contact from you, keeping his distance away from you when you are both alone and Mary was off doing something, etc. That kind of thing

-You assume he was just really shy around people Mary knows closely. So, you just keep conversations short and simple with him to not overwhelm him, but it seemed to work as he slowly builds up more communication between the two of you. However, Mary saw something else...she saw him to be more bright and happy when you came around to help her so that James can catch a break. That is when she became more snappy with James. He predicted that her snappiness was her sickness getting into her head, feeling useless and in chronic pain

-All of a sudden you received a phone call from James claiming he will be going to Silent Hill to visit for Mary's sanity. Stating she misses the town and has been calling to her for the weekend. You thought it was weird and decided to call right away. The phone picks up and it was Mary, questioning if it was true or not, and she said yes, enthusiastically. Some part of you still feel like something is going to happen, but you let it go and told her to stay safe

-The weekend has passed and they have not returned when you came over to talk about what went down in Silent Hill. Your heart rates increases with such anxiety that you decided to go to Silent Hill yourself to find James and Mary. When you did though it was rather eerie and ominous from the foggy town. You spotted James' car, but not no one inside. Investigating his car you saw nothing out of suspicion, so you're plan was to find James and Mary yourself

-Never did you think you would be dealing with monsters. There was these nurses and Pyramid Head figures every once in a while, but you managed to be sneaky and have them avoid you by throwing items to distract them. Slowly, you were getting clues from James and Mary's whereabouts. Yet, it seemed like it was intentional from finding a key to a hotel room #312. You heard crying on the other end and it sounded like James, so you quickly insert the key and turn the knob to get inside,"James!?" But, it was coming from the TV of James crying next to the bed where Mary was laying down, lifelessly, with a pillow on her face. That's when you realized James smothered her and did not return home due to his responsibility murdering his wife

-After that you were cautious with James if you find him or he finds you first. However, it seems like you end up running into each other. "James!?" His eyes were glum and dark, but changed to this twinge of hope and creepily happy to see you. He immediately holds you into a tight embrace that you couldn't escape. "You were looking for me. Thank god." His face was in the crook of your neck as his hot breathe warmed up your flesh

-You were nervous to ask him what happened with Mary. Thinking it could be just the haunted-weird town playing tricks on you. James was really REALLY protective and clingy with you. Following you like a damn lost puppy and would tell you to stand behind him when there are monsters, so he can beat/shoot them off. He would always ask you: "Did I do good?" "You think they're dead? I did it, right?" "You okay? I saw you were a little nervous."

-BEGS for praises (if the previous bullet doesn't say enough) like the way he questions you or gives you a look like ":D" just so you can tell him he did amazing and thanking him for saving your life. But, you attempt to imply anything in relations with Mary like saying: "You know I haven't found Mary yet...I hope she is okay." "I hope Mary finds us like we found each other." James would go back to his mopey-gloomy expression as he coldly replies to: "Yeah.." "She's fine on her own." "I'm sure she left the town before us."

-Eventually, you confronted James what you saw at the hotel room, because it has been eating you up worse and worse. James eyes widen, his mouth became dry, and throat hoarse as he tried to bring out words. Shit, just word vomit. "I-I...erm I didn't-" You showed him the room key #312 and his shoulders went slump as he confesses killing Mary. You were mad, disgusted, shocked, and sad-emotional turmoil all over. Yet, as much as you despised it the only way to get out of here is by sticking to his side since he knew his way around before. Plus, you don't want to end up being killed by him if he tried anything

-You can secretly plot your escape by tricking him that you won't be leaving him, but in the end of it all with James killing off Maria (that is for another time) he is heavily delusional and believes that you are leaving with him together from the town. Instead he wants to stay in Silent Hill with you. He doesn't mind the monsters he can kill them off. He can figure things out to maintain survival and necessities for you both (mainly you though). This is now your nightmare. You have to face your fears...which is escaping from James. Not from the town itself...

171. The Sleepwalker, by Robert Muchamore

Owned: No, library Page count: 312 My summary: A plane breaks up in the air, plunging into the ocean with no survivors. The government is quick to suspect the worst, looking into terrorist links. And in the midst of it all, they get a phone call from a scared boy, alleging that his father had something to do with it. Now Lauren Adams is deputised to find out exactly what this kid knows, and quickly. They won't have the clearance to follow this hunch for long. My rating: 3/5 My commentary:

I've gotten my hands on the final four CHERUB books as a job lot, so expect them to come at a bit of a faster rate until I'm completely done with them. That said, more CHERUB! I'm amazed that I still remember this series as well as I do. Like I've been saying as I go through them, I'm finding them a lot less easy to enjoy than I did when I was a teenager, both for normal and unavoidable reasons (I'm an adult, these books are not aimed at me anymore) and for more troubling ones (the simplistic explanations of complex morality questions, the casual bigotry on display). Nonetheless, I still think that this idea of a teen spy network is interesting enough to warrant these books' existence. The problem is in the execution, not the idea, which means there's still enough here that's interesting to me that I can carry on with it. So, let's get into the Sleepwalker.

Unusually, this is a book that's about Lauren. She has the A plot, while James is stuck in a B plot that doesn't really go anywhere. (More on that in a bit.) Unfortunately, this isn't really the most riveting of CHERUB missions. Lauren and Jake are going in to talk to Fahim and get more detail about what he knows, but they're not really in deep cover - they're literally just going to ask him. Lauren gets to show off a cool head and just why she's one of the youngest black shirts ever. She's composed, makes good decisions, is ethical, and generally has a good head on her shoulders; this in contrast to Jake, who makes some serious schoolboy errors on the mission. But it's not as action packed as James' missions, or the past missions where we've seen Lauren deployed. It is good to see Lauren showing the maturity to get put back as senior agent on missions again after her misconduct punishments, but this one was sort of underwhelming for me.

James, meanwhile, is doing work experience in a fast food place. The premise here just felt contrived - the conflict is that other kids have gotten the more vaunted positions, so James is stuck at the fast food place with his ex-girlfriend. But like, the CHERUB staff are supposed to be good at understanding the dynamics between their agents, surely they can see that this is a bad idea? They end up getting close to their coworker, who has a sh--ty boyfriend, which leads to a fight. James and Kerry get yelled at over it and assigned punishment, but they've hit it off again, leaving Kerry to hit on James and James, surprisingly, to turn her down out of loyalty to Dana. I just…I didn't come into this series for the domestic lives of teens, you know? I don't care. Get back to the missions. All this will-they-won't-they feels jarringly out of place.

And now, for the elephant in the room. I've spoken before about how the CHERUB series more often than not falls down when it tries to address social issues, and the main plot of this book is a really good example of this. Lauren is investigating an eleven year old boy whose father is potentially involved with the loss of an aeroplane, which was brought down killing everyone on board. The kid's name is Fahim Bin Hassam, and he's of Arabic descent. The plane crashed on September the tenth. Obviously, people assume that terrorism was the reason behind the crash. As it turns out, it was actually a faulty part supplied by Fahim's father - he's a smuggler, but not a terrorist. Interesting twist, right? The problem with that is that Hassam is the exact stereotype of a controlling Muslim father. He's gotten rich through crime, beats his wife and son, kills his wife when he suspects she's going to the police, wants his son to be brought up in Abu Dhabi with his relatives where he will get a strict education, is casually misogynistic and exploits his cleaner, and hates how 'westernised' his son has become despite not exactly being the most devout or traditional himself. It's not a subversion of stereotypes about Muslim men if it then plays into every single one of those stereotypes at the same time. Hassam is given no redeeming features and no humanising moments, no nuance. He's a crook and a bad person, plain and simple. And that's just as much a stereotype as portraying him as bringing down the plane in a deliberate act of terrorism would have been.

HARDDD AGREEE re: ur tags abt james in the sh2 remake!!!!!!!!! ive been feeling so weird abt this remake from the beginning but like. seeing him emote so much in such a like. big bad way is. bizarre. i Love how subdued his emotions are in the og it’s chilling and literally doesn’t make the ending feel like some kind of twist, just a sad inevitability. ur right and u should say it!!!!!

I have a Lot of feelings about James Sunderland lol, to the point I’ve considered writing several fandom essay posts about him and Silent Hill 2 as a whole XD.

Fr tho, I didn’t want the Remake anyway, but I love Silent Hill, and if I watched Revelations I figured I would at least give SH2-R a chance. I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed. Changing James’ character like this makes him fundamentally a new person, and in turn I just don’t see how several story beats will work. The narrative of the game is such a slow, insidious build and at no point do we (nor are we supposed to) doubt James and his story. The whole point is James is desperately clinging onto the idea that Mary might be there to meet him, and with the supernatural goings on, the player is on his side cuz who knows! There’s monsters and stuff, maybe poor dead Mary really is there, too! James himself is as doubtful as he is hopeful! The story is one big retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice, and the fact that James goes through everything he does out of the love he has for his wife is what makes the story work. The trailer removes all doubt about James’ guilt, a guilt that we didn’t know James bore until the scene at Lakeview. I dunno about anyone else, but that’s when my view of James drastically shifted, and again, depending on the ending you get, James still isn’t necessarily a ‘monster’. He’s a guy who, in his own words, is punishing himself for the worst thing he has ever done. Like you said, there’s not actually a ‘twist’ in SH2, the revelation in room 312 is just a deeply sad inevitability.

Something about the trailer makes it incredibly obvious that James is Guilty with a capital ‘Oh yeah, this guy totally Did It’ and I have to wonder at this point how anyone could have played through OG and thought this was a change that benefitted anyone in anyway. Removing James’ heavy dissociation and derealisation also removes that ~dreaminess~ of SH2, which is what makes the game so unique. Making him scream and shout and break down just turns this into any other horror, and I don’t have much hope for the pay-off.

But I’m a curious fucker, so I’ll watch someone on Youtube play it for me instead of paying £50+ lol
