Thought I'd give it a try. In response to this post from @piratecaptainscaptainpirates
Ended up ranking a bunch of first and last and shovelling the rest in the middle without particular consideration for their placement. That middle section is in no way set in stone.
The Innkeeper, s2e03. My go to comfort episode. And knowing the amount of work and love put into its final minutes makes me ecstatic about it. Had it on a loop in the background at some point.
The Pilot, s1e01. I just love it. Meeting everyone for the first time, Stede is adorable, he has glasses (which are the loml actually and the only reason I keep watching this stupid show is my hope to see them again), and dressing up as a bunch of fancy boys, and the British arseholes, officer Hornberry, and Nigel, an all. Just the right amount of quirkiness for my taste. It is incredible. I'd probably have put it in the first place if it weren't occupied already.
Act of Grace, s1e09. Love from the start to the end. The whole interrogation sequence, the Crew, all of them and every one in particular, the great punch, Chauncey, Hornberry, this man is a fearsome pirate, soft desperate touches, the king George himself overthinking things as usual, boys' outfits in the academy (I see a person in those breeches, shirt, socks and shoes - I offer them my hand in marriage. It's a reflex), the kiss and soft touches again, Ed's delight and the most baby Stede's face. And the heartbreak.
This is Happening, s1e07. I love the way the world expands and deepens and breathes there. I love Jim's storyline. Olu shines. The Swede. Nana is bonkers and horrible and toxic and great and "my only family", which will be paralleled later to a certain other toxic character. And Blackbeard's Bar&Grill&Other Delicacies&Delights&Fishing Equipment and Snake Snacks. And Lucius' intervention and speech which I'm unable to repeat at a fraction of the same speed for the life of me.
Fun and Games, s2e04. I can't believe myself now. On the first watch when Stede approached Ed under the blanket I was, to put it mildly, very cautious about the perspective of them actually talking it through on screen. Because talking it through on screen is a very tricky business when the viewer knows more than the characters. I can imagine a thousand ways of making it tedious and cringey to watch. But it turned out so very lovely. Unbelievably lovely. You wrote me a lovely talk-it-through!
We Gull Way Back, s1e08. Calico Jack is nauseating. But he had to be like that. Get off my ship. Now. Morning, Captain. No, it isn't. The telescope and the black (or rather red) eye. The Chain ❤️
The Best Revenge is Dressing Well, s1e05. I love their fancy outfits with a wig and flowers and little bows. And the pyramid scheme. And Stede's delight in causing havoc. And the moonlit chickening out.
Red Flags, s2e02. It is heartbreaking. And real. And heartbreaking. You have hope, it's cute. And Ed is insane[ly beautiful]. And heartbreaking.
Impossible Birds, s2e01. Because it feels so fucking real. And I'm afraid your life is better without me. And brings me flashbacks of me crashing wall tiles in a sliiiiiiightly similar situation. Thank goodness I never had a gun.
The Art of Fuckery, s1e06. It was a wonderful fuckery. Stede's stabbing face 😅 I'm a witch and this is my cat. Miao. And I'm your friend. And did I do it right?
The Gentleman Pirate, s1e03. The Cream of the Caribbean and the Genital Pirate. You've heard of me? Also blood does look good on all white garments as internet warriors should know.
A Damned Man, s1e02. Oh, please move! I probably have children, Bonnet. They will never see papa again! I'm a dirty filthy murderer! Take me away! Don't you trifle! He does have the eyes of a madman. Sorry, you do.
Mermen, s2e08. It's long overdue to put it somewhere. Let it be here. Because it was good and it made me feel good. And it finally stopped that torture, which had been the fandom experience up to this point with constant "Aha, eat your shit, Izzy-haters! We always knew he was a blameless little angel! And we are getting all so validated!" And turned it into a different one.
Discomfort in a Married State, s1e04. I don't know why it's so low. It is wonderful all the way through. I love it.
Wherever You Go, There You Are, s1e10. I love Mary. And Evelyn. Stede is painful to watch. But I loved the "unhand me or bleed" thing. Yes, baby, you have it in you, together with all the soft and frilly things. I'm here for it. Just choose your subject wisely next time and maybe don't drink so much. Ed is heartbreaking. Cutting the toe was frankly cathartic. Loved it (as a vindictive dick I am at heart) and hated it (for Ed's sake) simultaneously. And it ends on a hopeful note.
Man on Fire, s2e07. It is a good episode I suppose. Lots of things happening. Lots to love. But it pains me. And the characters and their doings cringe me at places. And I'm not strong enough for it.
The Curse of the Seafaring Life, s2e05. Oh, hello, it's me, and I'm unpredictable sometimes. I love my boy in his suit. And the revisiting of the moonlight scene, and the thumbs war, and "you won". But the episode as a whole felt like a filler and a waste of opportunity and time in a timewise constricted season.
Calipso's Birthday, s2e06. It feels like a cushion after you pull it out of a washing machine - all the stuffing is a lumpy wet mess here and there, the rest is just a sad empty sack. Also "poison into positivity" repeated again and again in a clanky way like a ball bearing in a spray paint can. It was driving me crazy and throwing me out of the story and into a filming set, where actors are failing to find a way to say a particular line from the script and instead of dropping it or replacing it with something more organic, power through, with, well, that exact clanking result. I loved Ned Low though, he was cute. And the kiss and the curtain thing were hot as the fucking, which followed.

Series rewatch notes to self
S1E01 “us weirdos have to stick together”; takeout death with Warden Wrath cutting off Eda’s head (using scythe arm); Eda coerces Luz into her first adventure and that’s when Luz decides to stay, deceives her mom for the first time; quest to get King’s crown, him living in a fantasy world; King is a lot more enjoyable when I have the context of his developmental age, but it does make Eda look more questionable
S1E02 Luz draws more direct comparisons between her life and Azura than I remember; directly addresses dangers of living in a fantasy world, main character fallacy, trusting shady old men; Luz trapped in fantasy world and choosing to wake up; parallels between her projecting Azura fantasy dreamland onto BI (presented as hellish from start) vs projecting her depressed cognitive distortions onto the Collector’s fantasy dreamland; Nevareth “teen prince of angstmore” has an animal sidekick I forgot about, as a puppet gets stabbed by Luz.
S1E03 Luz refers to the Owl House as home in the cold open. Reference to Eda’s poor position in BI, Luz not wanting that for herself. Love Willow. Angry outburst and trouble controlling plant magic from the start. Confirmed Best: “Into the darkness you go 😉”. Gus is so smol. Didn’t have to make Amity so mean for how much it ends up being explored. King is treated more like a sentient pet than anything, weirds me out. Willow told to cut Luz, iconic crooked dagger. Abominations as mindless obedient creations. Willow confirmed plant prodigy, Bump says “remarkable.” Amity’s desperate need to be top student. High fives and hugs are human things.
S1E04 LORE. Boiling rain. King teaching about demons, v funny. Eda teaching spell circles bile sac. Owl beast curse; King knows about potions but think they give Eda magic. Luz wants to learn magic so people take her seriously. King dejected that Luz cares more about magic than demons. Bonding. Curse can be managed by elixir, entirely out of control otherwise. First dream memory not knowing who cursed her. Luz learns light spell.
S1E05 Covention. Introduction of coven systems. Eda is such a radical and I love her for it. Friction between her views and Willow and Gus’ societal norms. Lilith and EC get introduced (by Bump, v pro). Another case of mean is bad, nice is good and vice versa. Duel between Luz and Amity. King as a pet again. Lilith is Eda’s sister. Reveal via Kikimora at the end that she’s supposed to be capturing Eda, but she doesn’t try to in this ep. Big emphasis over multiple episodes on whether Eda is a good teacher/mentor for Luz. Eda and Lilith both cheat. They duel. Eda tells her the curse is killing her, “don’t know how many days I have left.”
S1E06 moonlight conjuring. Bad: Eda has a gambling problem; needless friction between Eda and Luz for conflict; Eda as a pickpocket played for laughs, acting like all crimes are created equal. Good: kids are all flawed but cute; Willow insecurity moment; Gus’ bucket list; Willow and Gus trying to protect Luz from Eda’s punishment at the end. Also that guy who enjoys throwing kids off of cliffs, v funny. Tibbles the capitalist. Eda w/o magic getting captured easily (to get handed over to EC). Owlbert doesn’t (can’t?) transform to help. Amity is legit such a bully to Willow.
S1E07 Lumity. But setup begins with Luz, Eda, King; better going into it knowing which split ups occur. Eda and King babysit for BQ, amazing reluctant parent Eda; “joke” at end about empty nest syndrome w parallels to Eda’s Requiem. Luz explicitly interested in befriending Amity because of Azura. Amity blames Luz, calls her a bully (retracts at end); implications for Luz’s guilt later. Twins presented as cool; v mean; rule breakers; inconsistencies wrt illusion magic; revenge on Amity for tattling on them. Amity diary entries.
S1E08 starts with Boscha, Luz recognizes her as a bully (weird framing with Amity). Body swap. Don’t buy premise of them not being able to empathize with each other; series started off with us weirdos sticking together, nothing done to undermine that. Would’ve preferred seeing them bond together. Interesting take with King wrt woobifying/coddling/babying characters. Unfortunate implications wrt framing of King as an adult sentient pet like creature. King is Luz, doesn’t act less mature than her; how old is he supposed to be? Skara isn’t that bad even in this. Luz does spell circles as Eda. Her AND OWLBERT get arrested by the EC. Lilith shows up; scouts react to her presence, she does command respect. Overrides orders to send Eda straight to conformatorium, to try to brand her into EC instead. Show won’t commit to Eda’s crimes. Ep includes rat worms, crow phones. Ends with Eda swapping everyone, it is horrifying, wild magic is dangerous ig
S1E09 Mattholomew human appreciation club. Gus lies about Luz being unbanned. Willow Disapproves. Friction between Eda and Luz about Eda’s ability (interest) in teaching Luz magic. Eda talks to Bump; he’s cool with Luz but Eda has a long permanent record. More about illusion magic. Like how terrible Matt is. Skara gets dragged off by a griffin and later has a cute scene “friendship is the real magic” lol. Gus’ weird wristwatch. Ghosts are little purple goo things?? Luz upset that Gus lied. Why Gus lied: being younger than everyone is hard, you get ignored. Bump promises to not tell the EC about Eda, “I’m a principal not a stooge.” Willow went to help but didn’t get to do anything?
S1E10 OWLBERT YES. King treated like a child, younger than Luz. Eda out of commission due to curse flare up. Willow and Gus (they miss the bus to wait for Luz at Willow’s prompting). Parents get children places by giving rise on staff confirmed. Half-owl beast, Eda “suggestible”. King uses her; he should’ve known better. Potion doesn’t work. King snaps her out of it 😒. Love BQ. Love Owlbert plot. BQ was right. Willow and Gus sidelined again. Gus “became slightly traumatized. Hooray!” No closure on main 3; potions aren’t working on Eda’s curse anymore. Ends on BQ cute.
S1E11 King and Luz write Ruler’s Reach. Eda dealing with curse and Lilith. Lilith starts off looking for bloom of eternal youth for Belos? Eda goes to follow Lilith and she tells Luz she’s leaving to an undisclosed location for a few days and Luz is fine with that. Stakes are building gradually. Skara author fangirl. Premise of Luz and King seems off, framed as King controlling the story. But Luz seemed to be controlling it at first, neither seem good at collaborating. Fun commentary on creative industry. Sentient abomination? 12:06 (see also end of ep 9). Glimpses of s2 Lilith. Interesting look at her and Eda’s relationship: Eda saves her then pushes her over to get to the bloom first; ends on positive note with her waiting for Eda to choose to join.
S1E12 Luz is the one to ditch Eda and King this time, for Lumity build-up. Idea of Azura book club brought up. Amity is much nicer to Luz; the twins are much nicer to Amity. Magic requirement at Hexside. MENTOR EDA. She hasn’t taught Luz any new spells but she has been reading her books about wild magic. Same problem as Teen Abom? Thing where Eda’s teaching method doesn’t work for Luz. Luz steals Amity’s training wand and angers beast. Gets Eda and twins (parental?) captured. Amity cages Luz to keep her safe. That’s what forces Luz to take Eda’s advice and listen to nature. Meanwhile King brings toys to life so that they tremble before him. Hooty murders them (played dark). Love the lore, hate the plot.
S1E13 Luz’s Hexside entrance exam, v interesting. Eda offer for her to back out, Quitter Badge. King eating out of Hexside’s trashcans. Willow explains coven head banners. Basilisk impersonating EC official. Track system; rule book made by EC. Bump follows to get donation from EC. Crystal balls used by oracle track (not just tv) and contain future telling ghouls. Detention track (with Viney). Needs to wait a whole year to try another track? “Maybe you’d do better in a human school” from Bump. Peaks into other classes - oracle seeing to end of life. All of them in there for multitracking 😒. Willow and Gus pitted as antagonists. She is consistently the responsible one of the two. King teaches a class. Bump does try to protect Amity from basilisk. Bump 300 years until retirement joke. Glyph magic hurts basilisk. Bump character growth re multitrack.
S1E14 Really small problems. “ready for trauma” line. About a Ferris wheel that gives you nightmares. Eda profiting off of Luz the human as a freak show. Owlbert is back. Willow gets to take some initiative, is the responsible friend. King portrayed as a kid, younger than the others. Consistent anti-law message with the show. The crowd wanted to see kids eaten. King explains it as demons do crazy things when they miss someone?
S1E15 where did my notes go??? It’s understanding Willow. Willow is hilarious. Christmas-ish is canon. Angry inner Willow is great. There was something else I can’t remember. More about mindscapes? Willow remembers what happened in there.
S1E16 Grom. Starts with Luz re Camila (she’d be freaked out by the demon realm haha). Amity is reflexively mean, catches herself when it’s “Luz and co.” Eda says Luz is human, fragile, so condescending. That’s what motivates Luz to take Amity’s place. This has those good scenes of Luz lying to her mom about her emotions via text. If Grom isn’t defeated everyone on the island has to live out their worst nightmare. “What’s the fun in watching a kid get eaten by a monster if it’s my kid?” I love Eda. Willow is more popular/confident at school now. Gus as MC; calls glyphs human magic. Bonds with King. Immersion broken by annoying meta humor. Grom!Camila hits so much harder now. Lumity displaces touching Eda rescue. Love Skara. End bit with Camila, Vee sending her letters, so cute.
S1E17 sports. Boscha intro, parallels with Willow into in ASIAS? Willow is popular. Amity counters Boscha’s snide comments, she grew up from being obsessed with status and challenging competition. New type of ghost, looks like a ghost. Eda used to play grudby. Can’t reason with crazy. Boscha says Amity went soft after Grom. Not after understanding Willow? Boscha can get away with murder bc sports. Lilith is back. Hooty grabs her from the forest. She’s here to arrest Eda. The jacket Eda gave Luz is her grudgby thing. Skara is mean but only via background looks. Willow has never played grudgby before. Montage joke. Luz pushes too hard. Willow does a last second save like in ASIAS. Willow the realist I love her. Also more anger. Amity really got boring when she gets her crush thing. Eda beats Lilith at grudby, can’t go back empty handed, tell him I put up a good fight. Luz learns fire magic. Skara isn’t on team at the end; sits out bc Boscha rejected Luz’s forfeit? Or just alternate? Starts off good game Willow at the end I love her. Ep ends looking like Amity is joining the squad; deceit.
S1E18 so much plot omg. Kikimora: DOU is approaching, others have blind many rogue witches to covens. Hooty is such an effective intruder alarm. What happened to the magic repelling cloak? Owl beast forever fate worse than death. The kids are so brainwashed. Kiki is the emperor’s assistant. “Witches had access to corrupt knowledge and that dishonored the Titan.” So much. “Good luck with puberty” such good delivery. Belos is straight up consuming palismen in front of scouts and everyone. Also clearly bad health. Threatening Liltih. “Stripped of your rank and banished. You know what happens to covenless witches.” With the heartbeat. Hunter standing there covered head to toe absorbing all of this jfc. Willow and Gus are the best. Interesting. Lilith says “these decrepit relics are useless” when she destroys the healing hat, but Willow and Gus’ relics worked. I wonder if it really could have healed the curse. Scouts are definitely watching Eda and Lilith duel. Bs Eda “wasting her magic” before she knew Luz. Didn’t have to make Lilith go so hard just to up the stakes, have curse triggered some other way. Emotional takeout tho tbf. Owlbert rescues Luz. Interesting found family bit, Lilith “Eda is with her real family.” SUCH a downer ending I love it.
S1E19 the cloak “to a young witch from her proud mentor.” The dagger is back. Luz blaming herself. Lilith to Eda “this is for your own good.” Belos teleporting. Lilith says Eda will become “a useful asset to the coven.” Mechanical staff appears; he uses it to make Eda present in owl beast??? Luz the human on his radar, he wants the portal. Lied to Lilith “don’t be naive it’s the Titan’s will.” He tells her to destroy Owlbert; inconsistent? PERRY YES. Excuse for petrifying her is refusing to join a coven and attacking a coven leader lol yikes. Willow and Gus are talking on their scrolls. Luz hates Lilith. Luz blaming herself again. Eda wanting to protect her. We’re a family 🥺. “You have a family already. Go back to them.” Luz so vengeful against Lilith. [Lilith calls Belos the most powerful witch on the Isles.] Paints it as Eda as a kid worked harder than Lilith, not sure I agree. Apparently well-known Belos quote, “To be great you have to make sacrifices.” Flashback background appearance from Oralia and Alador. Owlbert used to prove Lilith is legit. Perry calls her “Head coven leader” Lilith (when she’s tossed in the petrification cage last minute. (But the spell only hits Eda.) Hunter shows up again at the end. Must be busy after this between the portal door and the “promotion.”
[rush to catch up]
S2E10 Yesterday's Lie hits so much harder now. There is so much to explore with Camila and Vee's relationship. Both when Vee was pretending to be Luz and the immediate aftermath before the others showed up. And then the ending with Camila and Luz. Brutal. Also wish we could have seen Luz and Vee's relationship develop in TTT. Do they consider each other sisters now?

Adventure Time Reviewed: Season 1 part 1
As promised, I’m going through the Adventure Time series. I’m going to write brief reviews for each of the eps as I watch them, in groups.
Slumber Party Panic to Prisoners of Love
S1E01: Slumber Party Panic
This made an outstanding choice for a first episode, even if it wasn’t the intended premiere, because SPP shows you a brief package of what themes the show would keep through its run, rather than just a brief adventure.  It’s really funny that the first appearance of Princess Bubblegum in the series is her raising the dead, it being a big mistake, and her lying to the candy people to protect them and describing them as ignorant, then making a 12 year old keep a royal promise.  This ep shows Finn’s early season character - an amped up, anxious kid who wants to keep everyone happy but sometimes can’t. And it has Jake trying to pry the information from him, because from Jake’s perspective it is out of character for Finn to keep secrets, and he is also messed up after finding Dead Mr Creampuff’s sock with Finn. (Mr Creampuff and Manfried are both in this ep, and they will continue to be the funniest retcons of all time to me)    What was absolutely retconned after this ep was the brokenness of the Gumball Guardians. It’s hilarious that Bubblegum programmed them to go apeshit if someone breaks a promise to her. If only they could have frozen time during the final battle against GOLB. I liked the part in ETDBIDK where you have to answer a maths question while dodging their attacks, even if it went on a bit too long.   The ep also subverts its message. Bubblegum asks Finn if he learned about the consequences of breaking promises, but Finn says that if he breaks promises he can go on AWESOME ADVENTURES and REVERSE DEATH ITSELF, and PB goes whatever, youre too cute to yell at.
The music in SPP is surreal. Seriously, listen to this ep. The tension it creates when Finn is told to make a royal promise because the zombies will explode, and how the music so naturally swings with the mood of the ep. Excellent score!
As Jake said,“This is messed up, but cute!”
S1E02: Trouble in Lumpy Space
This is the introduction to LSP and to Lumpy Space. Lumpy space is a beautiful if rather barren environment. I do think more could have been done with it in AT, because there are not many episodes that take place in space.  One design choice I found SUPER COOL in this ep is the sun has a green halo around it. I can’t actually find the sun again, I even looked on the wiki but there are no images, so it must have appeared for a brief instance. But it looked great!
LSP as a character was always incredibly selfish, but she also has this vibe of being a teenager who dwells far too much on teenager feelings. She NEVER takes anything seriously, unless it’s teen drama. And you can see that in full effect here.  I love LSP. I love how much of an asshole she is, yet she has this sort of charm, because she’s so spiteful but in the teenage idiot kind of way rather than in a genuinely malicious way. It’s like she doesn’t understand right and wrong and is driven by pure instinct. And she’s voiced by Pen Ward! His LSP voice is the best.
I love Finn and Jake getting lumpified. There is some great voice acting on behalf of Jeremy Shada to pull this off.
Favourite joke: When Jake talks about how he might get lumpified, and if it happens Finn says he’ll bury him next to the treehouse, but Jake is alarmed and says he just wanted to be accepted, what did Finn think he was going to say? LMAO
Other good one: “We were drawn back by your directionless fury. Here! PCHOO! Get your girl back!” “Yeah there’s no girl.”
Finn in this ep is having some issues communicating. He ends up having an outburst at LSP, even though it wasn’t entirely her fault that the smooth posers took away the orb, it was theirs too. Finn was having a bad day.
I wish Jellybeans Have Power started with PB and SP bouncing on marshmallows like in this episode rather than having tea in her room. That would’ve been a nice callback.
Anyway, Trouble in Lumpy Space is great. These two eps are really good introductions to the series.
S1E03: Prisoners of Love
I love the joke with the snow golem’s cat head. There is an immediate callback to the Pilot, with Finn and Jake having fun in the snow. I always liked how fun these scenes looked, they are very very rare later in the series.  There’s even a homage to penguin surfing, but the penguins are surfing on Jake this time.  Finn and Jake act like jerks to the Ice King for like no reason. “Do you know what Ice King means?” “A big nerd!” “Oh, holy cow!”  *fistbump*
“There’s a big sleepy lava man in our front yard, and he is SO hot.” “Mmmhmm....” “Nonono I take it - I mean, not like SEXY hot--” “No, no you DO mean sexy hot!”  “NO! I mean---”  Oh Adventure Time. Gay jokes on episode 3, and these would continue throughout the show. But as soon as you imply two of your main girl characters are or were in love, suddenly the network hounds onto you like dogs :/ Rebecca Sugar herself said that it’s much more likely you’ll get gay content in if it’s presented as a joke, or Wrong somehow, like Jake and Ice King getting married later in the season.
“Now now, I brought you a baby! And a PUPPY!” In his twisted way, Ice King thought the princesses would want to have Finn and Jake there. It’s also a good thing Finn and Jake got kidnapped because otherwise they wouldn’t have discovered Ice King locked up a bunch of princesses.
Ice King himself is a fun character already. He’s not shown as doing outright evil stuff to Finn and Jake for the sake of it. He seems heavily misguided, and idiotic, trying in his weird way to make friends. Then again.... “IceKing - let the girls go! They don’t want to be here.” “Of course they do! I’d have killed them already if they didn’t want to be here! Right ladies?” Ice King I’m increasingly certain the only reason you haven’t been dissected on Bubblegum’s lab table is because of your connection to Marceline, but that is some late series lore. As for the early seasons, wtf dude!
The flute song Finn plays in this ep is very similar to the one he plays in Lemonhope part 2. The Lemonhope version is more complete. “You broke it when we tried picking the lock to that sad ogre’s heart!” Oh my god that is such an AT line, you can imagine an entire emotional adventure based on that.
Ice King has a drawing of Bubblegum on his keyboard...
I love how the princesses are clearly quite traumatized by this affair, having been held for weeks, but the most Ice King did was ask them about their favourite sports, while threatening to kill them if they didnt play the keyboard..... it’s like a parody of a twisted serial killer. AT’s dark humor is my favourite.
Finn is a hot headed kid. He knows that the Ice King needs some kind of help but doesn’t know where to start. He knows he’s probably too young to understand. But Jake hasn’t got the patience to help.
Cosmic Owl’s first appearance!!!!!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season One Easter Eggs And References
I so greatly enjoyed Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, and I’m really interested to see what they do in season two, which is almost done filming. I still maintain that this show is like if Riverdale and Supernatural had a baby. It’s definitely creepy and not for everyone, but I found it fascinating.
I’ve got Easter eggs galore, though I didn’t go through and explain who every comic book character is like I would normally do with a superhero show. And yes, the Netflix series is based on the 2014 Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic, which in turn was named after another comic from decades earlier. Sabrina Spellman is an Archie Comics character, but it’s not clear if her show is set in the same universe as Riverdale or not.
There are spoilers here, but as usual, I’ve broken this list down episode by episode for those who want to read while they watch. Enjoy.
S1E01 “Chapter One: October Country”
Opening Credits
The opening credits feature the artwork of Robert Hack. Hack is the artist who actually illustrated The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic book. A lot of his art inspires the look of the show as well.
The Episode Title
October Country gets its name from a collection of stories by Ray Bradbury. They were all considered pretty dark, and the volume mostly reprinted stories included in a different anthology, only adding a few new pieces, king of like this show.
The Very 70s Aesthetic
The show kind of has a weird timewarp thing going on like sister series Riverdale. There’s a lot of cars, furniture, and even clothing that seem to be inspired by the 1970s. That’s likely because Sabrina made her comic book debut in the 70s. It’s a way to give an homage to the original books as well as the newer series the show adapts.
Cerberus Books
Cerberus was a three headed dog who guarded the gate to the underworld in Greek mythology. We’ll discuss him more in a later episode.
Dr. Saperstein
My guess is that someone on staff is a Parks and Rec fan. This is Jean-Ralphio’s surname, and his father, was, in fact, a doctor. Of course, it’s also the name of the doctor in Rosemary’s Baby, so… pick your reference.
Sabrina’s Thermos
You’ll notice some characters on Sabrina’s thermos. Those happen to be a musical group named The Archies. Yep, they’re Archie and the gang from Riverdale, which does make you wonder if the two shows are in the same universe or if one is the fictional version of the other or what.
Sabrina Makes Harvey Forget
She does it with a kiss here, but in the 90s television sitcom, she made him forget she was a witch a lot of times. This made me wonder if she might have to do it a few more times over the course of this series, or if the next time he finds out, it sticks.
Her Parents Were Flying To Italy
This is an awfully interesting destination. Why? Because what’s in Italy? That would be Rome and the Vatican, home of the Catholic Church, which is interesting in and of itself. It’s both a very romantic and a very religious destination for a witch and a mortal to be traveling to. It also happens to be where the first Sabrina The Teenage Witch movie was set, if I remember right.
The Weird Sisters
These three get their nickname from the trio of witches in Shakespeare’s MacBeth. There’s a lot of Shakespeare references throughout the show, but I think that’s really just because writers like their Shakespeare.
Salem
The show’s take on Salem is interesting. In the Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina comic, he was Sabrina’s familiar, but that’s not became he was a goblin. Instead, he was cursed by a witch in Salem to become a cat. He was a mortal man named Samuel who got her pregnant and, because he had nothing to offer her, he didn’t want her to have to marry him. She took offense, Satan ate their kid and she cursed him to become her familiar. When she died in the witch trials, Satan renamed him Salem as a nod to what happened.
The 90s sitcom had Salem as a warlock who was cursed to cat form by the witches council after committing a crime. It seems like Ambrose on house arrest is filling that role this time around.
S1E02 “Chapter Two: The Dark Baptism”
“...a movie star like cousin Montgomery.”
I like the idea that this is a nod to Elizabeth Montgomery, the star of the series Bewitched, which followed a witch named Samantha who married a mortal. Samantha’s evil cousin on the show? Her name was Sabrina.
A Riverdale Mention
So, Riverdale is likely just across the river from Greendale here since we hear the town named.
Black Narcissus
The name of the goat snagged for Sabrina’s baptism is also the name of a 1947 film. There’s actually a ton of classic movie references, posters, etc in the show, just like in Riverdale. I probably won’t point them all out because this would be a list of nothing but movie references.
S1E03 “Chapter Three: The Trial Of Sabrina Spellman
“Conserve water. Plug it up, plug it up…”
This is a sign on the bathroom door in the high school It’s a nod to the horror movie Carrie, which was based on a book by Stephen King. The movie also inspired a musical episode of Riverdale in season two.
Daniel Webster
The lawyer is named after a character in a pretty famous short story about a farmer who sells his soul to the devil and is then defended by a talented lawyer.
Archie’s Madhouse
Another comic from the Archie world of comics. One of its covers is on the wall in Harvey’s room. He’s clearly a fan of many different types of comics.
Ravens VS Bulldogs
We get another nod to the fact that Riverdale exists. About half way into the episode, there’s a kid putting up a flyer for a bowling match between the Baxter High Ravens and the Riverdale High Bulldogs.
Dr. Specter
I just thought it was funny that an eye doctor has this name. It’s not really an Easter egg, just cute.
Side note: Ambrose asks Luke if he’s a vampire. So, I’m going to go with witches aren’t the only supernatural beings the show will eventually introduce. Vampires, werewolves, there is no limit to what I expect now.
S1E04 “Chapter Four: Witch Academy”
Gehenna Station
“Gehenna” is an old biblical term that means hell-like. I kind of think it’s fitting that the school is disguised as an old train station as well since a lot of artists imagine purgatory as a train station. Hell-like purgatory seems like a good training ground for witches.
Nick Scratch
Old Scratch is a common slang, or at least it used to be, for the devil. Here, I think it’s just a nod to the fact that Nick’s a warlock. (Also, Nicholas Scratch was the name of a Marvel villain once upon a time, but that’s a whole different publisher.)
Valac
One of the names seen in a book is that of Valac. I think fans of The Conjuring franchise will recognize it as a demon there. Another movie reference in this episode? The “light as a feather, stiff as a board” chant used by the harrowed kids. That’s courtesy of The Craft.
S1E05 “Chapter Five: Dreams In A Witch House”
Batibat
Her makeup looks pretty reminiscent of The Witches (movie based on a Roald Dahl book), but that’s actually all I’ve got for this episode. Unless we count Sabrina using the children’s string game Jacob’s Ladder as her way to get the spiders’ webs going, but I think that’s just a result of that particular game being a prevalent one in the 90s, and thus, amongst the writers.
S1E06 “Chapter Six: An Exorcism In Greendale”
Harvey As Johnny Depp
Harvey with his headphones on in the #10 tee? That’s am almost exact remake of a shot of Johnny Depp in A Nightmare On Elm Street. (Side note: I kind of feel like this shot should have been in the previous episode, the one that actually focused on nightmares.)
Apophis
Apophys is a death metal group. Apophis is the name of an asteroid, but also a derivation of the name of an Egyptian ruler, as well as an Egyption entity of chaos. Apep was drawn as a giant serpent and was an enemy of “the light.”
The Exorcist Homage
Okay, this episode really just plays as a loving homage to The Exorcist. There are so many shots that echo frames from the film. I’m not going to even attempt to list them all.
The Witches That Came Before
Okay, Sabrina calls on the power of a whole lot of historical figures as she names “witches” during her exorcism. My personal favorites? The goddesses Artemis and Luna, the queen Anne Boleyn, and the mythical first wife of Adam, Lilith. She also calls on Morgan Le Fay of the famous Arthurian legend. She actually appeared in an old Archie comic involving time travel called Jughead’s Time Police. Yeah, even Archie comics got weird back in the day.
Afterlife With Archie
This is the more supernatural version of the Archie comic book universe. Luke actually has a copy of an issue in his hands while he’s in Cerberus. It’s funny because this comic book storyline was created by Sabrina trying to bring Jughead’s dog back to life… we’ll call that foreshadowing for a future episode.
S1E07 “Chapter Seven: Feast of Feasts”
Grandpa Kinkle
TV fans might recognize Grandpa Kinkle as Michael Hogan. He’s been all over genre shows for decades. Most recently though, and where Sabrina’s target audience will know him from, he played a hunter on Teen Wolf. There, he came from a long line of werewolf hunters. Here, he’s from a long line of witch hunters. Coincidence? I have a feeling it’s not.
Ben
Poor, tragic pizza delivery boy. Okay, so the most recent season of Riverdale also featured a character named Ben. Specifically, Ben Button. Ben Button was played by Moses Thiessen. Guess who this Ben is played by? That would also be Moses Thiessen. And, guess what else? They both (spoiler alert for Riverdale fans who haven’t watched yet) died in weird ways. What does this mean? I have no idea.
Side note: The only witches in the coven who don’t seem to partake in the feast are Sabrina, Zelda, Nick, and surprisingly, Prudence. (And Hilda and Ambrose, but they aren’t invited) There’s a part of me that wonders if that will be significant in season two.
S1E08 “Chapter Eight: The Burial”
1693
Above the entrance to the mine, we see that the Kinkle’s took over, or created, the South Line in 1693. I’ll admit, my first thought was, oh, that’s when the Sanderson sisters originally died in Hocus Pocus. It’s also the year that the Salem Witch Trials took place, providing a nod to the history the show pulls from. The Von Kunkles hunted down witches and stole their land while the trials were going on in Salem, which also indirectly led to the hanging of the original Greendale witches. Yikes.
American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares
A comic book published by Vertigo, this happens to land on Harvey’s bedside table. Another vampire reference, eh? I hope we see one eventually.
S1E09 “Chapter Nine: The Returned Man”
Dr. Phibes
He’s named for a Vincent Price character. If you don’t know who Vincent Price was, he was pretty much the face of horror in American cinema for a while. Do yourself a favor and look him up.
Pop Culture Nods
I have no idea why someone who claims to be as dark as Zelda chooses a song from The Sound of Music for the Church of Night’s choir. Your guess is as good as mine. Susie tries to shoplift Orlando by Virginia Woolf. I’ve never read it, but it’s certainly the type of novel Susie, or even a witch in Greendale would be interested in. It follows a poet who changes sex (male to female) and lives for hundreds of years.
S1E10 “Chapter 10: The Witching Hour”
Mr. Loomis
This is likely a nod to the Halloween franchise, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that it was also the last name of Sidney’s boyfriend in Scream, but that was a nod to Halloween in and of itself.
Riverdale
Again, a Riverdale nod. Harvey’s dad had the funeral home in Riverdale take care of Tommy instead of the Spellman’s. But is it in the Riverdale we know on TV? Who knows?
“Let Greendale cast a spell on you…”
This is the town motto on the sign at the edge of town. (I’d like to point out the sign is designed just like the one of CW’s Riverdale, so nice consistency in set design there.) It’s cute, but I’m also wondering how the town got this motto since everyone seems bent on rewriting the towns witchy history.
Cerberus
The owner of Cerberus books? His eyes flash yellow after getting a kiss from Hilda. I’d like to think he’s something canine to go with his name, and perhaps his store stands over an actual gate to hell. Whether he’s a real hellhound or a werewolf, or the show pays off on its vampire nods with him, remains to be seen.
Madame Satan
She reveals her real name. She also reveals she’s Lilith, first wife of Adam. I find it funny that Sabrina actually invoked her during the exorcism.
Comic Book Look
Sabrina gets her comic book accurate hair in the end here. You know, I don’t think she needed it, but it’s a nice nod that there’s been a transformation in her power level.
Bonus Motifs
These things showed up a lot, and I didn’t want to have to write about it every single time.
13
Pop culture has got 13 as being unlucky and associated with magic, so I like that the show embraced it. A witch’s pregnancy lasts 13 months, 13 minutes is just enough time for a soul to leave a body, and 13 hours is how long Sabrina has to wait to see if her resurrection spell worked.
Cain And Abel
These two brothers were the sons of Adam and Eve, for those who know their biblical stories. They represent jealousy and murder, etc. We’ve got Hilda with her Cain pit in the garden, but there’s actually a lot of more subtle references to them. Cain was a farmer (Hilda) and Abel was a shepherd (Zelda, leading the way), for example. There’s a lot of focus on sibling relationships considering the show’s main character is an only child. Harvey and Tommy, Hilda and Zelda, the Weird Sisters, etc.
Suspira
A lot of the set design (windows and ceilings, specifically) are nods to the horror film Suspira. I’ve never seen it, but it got a lot of notice from horror fans on social media, so I figured I should add that here.
Real Spells
According to interviews and set visits, the crew wanted the set to be authentic, so that had practicing witches cast protection spells on the set and used real symbols around the Spellman house. The Spellman house even has a German protection spell carved into the floor.
Jughead
Also according to set visits, one of the shelves in the Baxter High library has a shelf where you can see a crown and “Jughead was here” carved into it. I don’t think it’s actually visible while watching the show though.
So, what did you guys think about the show? Love it? Hate it? Did you spot more Easter eggs?

Galavant for the fandom thing?
Can I just point out how much I love people always asking me for Galavant. It makes me happy to see how much everyone knows I am trash.
Send me a show/fandom and ill answer - Top 5 favourite characters: Madalena, Madalena, Madalena, Richard, Gareth (is that cheating? Fine, Galavant and Sid…I guess)Other characters you like: I don’t *dislike* anyone. I just like some less than others. Least favourite character: Isabella. I don’t dislike her, I just have too much of a connection to Madalena apparently…I also find her the hardest to write when it comes to fanfic.Otps: QUEEN MADALENA AND GARETH. IF YOU DIDN’T REALISE.Notps: Madalena with anyone other than Gareth, especially Isabella. I can tolerate past Maddie/Gareth and Maddie/Steve. But Maddie/Isabella is a NOPEFavourite friendship: Gareth and Richard or Richard and GalavantFavourite family: Isabella and her parentsFavourite episode: S2E07 Love and DeathFavourite season/book/movie: Season 2Favourite quote: Well I kind of am here for the unnecessary bloodshed - Madalena, Queen of my heartMoment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: Probably the entirety of Madalena and Gareth in Love and Death. When it really disappointed you: Does the non renewal count? If not, Maddie leaving Gareth. It made sense but… Saddest moment: “Gareth, I love you, more than you’ll ever know. But this is who I am. I’m sorry.” PEACE OUT. IN COME THE TEARS.Most well done character death: Galavant’s…because it was done with a good musical number and not many other people actually die…Favourite guest star: Robert Lindsay if he counts. Otherwise Kylie Minogue.Favourite cast member: Mallory Jansen. Obviously. Character you wish was still alive: Kingsley and Wormwood are the only dead ones? And I don’t want either of them alive again, so none. One thing you hope really happens: A SEASON 3 RENEWAL - or movie - SO I CAN FINALLY GET A PROPER KISS BETWEEN MADALENA AND GARETH.Most shocking twist: For me, shipping Madalena and Gareth. BOY DID THAT COME FROM NOWHERE. Also technically, right at the start, Madalena turning Galavant down for fame and fortune. When did you start watching/reading: About 6 episodes into S1 when I saw gifsets on tumblrTrope you wish they would stop using: GIVE ME ALL THE TROPES. THE LACK OF BODY SWAPPING IS A TRAVESTY. Tbh this show is pretty good at avoiding bad tropes. OH WAIT, the stupid miscommunication trope between Gal and Isabella is stupid. One thing this show/book/film does better than others: The humour. The songs. Breaking my heart.Funniest moments: The show is a comedy gold mine, I can’t just pick a handful. Though I have a particular love of fourth wall breaking, so all those moments. Couple you would like to see: MADALENA AND GARETH. ACTUALLY BE TOGETHER. HAPPY. AND KISSING.Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: Mark Hamill or William Shatner. They both love the show. Most boring plotline: Any that isn’t Madalena’s…tbh there isn’t really a boring plotline, but I’d probably choose Isabella’s in S2.Best flashback/flashfoward if any: Uh…I guess the One Year Later and all the stuff that happens in S1E01Most layered character: Madalena. She’s like a fucking onion of evil. It’s beautiful. Scariest moment: There isn’t really any scary stuff..I guess the undead army appearing?Grossest moment: The cow/brown fart stuff? IdkBest looking male: GalavantBest looking female: MadalenaWho you’re crushing on (if any): MADALENAMost beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): Any scene of Madalena’s face. Sorry not sorry.Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: HOW BIG DID TAD COOPER GET. do game of thrones pls
Send me a fandom and I’ll tell you… | Accepting
the first character i ever fell in love with: Eddard Stark. I know, I know. I was doomed. never fall for a Stark.
a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: tbh it’s always the reverse for me with GoT characters. I used to hate them, now I like them. so N/A
a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: I don’t tend to change my mind on ships
my ultimate favorite character™: Jaime Lannister (also RamRam Bolton but Jaime has been my longest love)
prettiest character: good lord there are so many. Jaime, Robb, Oberyn, RamRam, Jon… the list goes on
my most hated character: any of the Freys. Littlefinger. there are probably more but I can’t think of them all rn
my OTP: JAIME/BRIENNE. hands down. (and for non-canon bc Jaime/Brienne is canon no one and nothing can tell me otherwise: Ramsay/Jon. Charlie is partially at fault for this one ;D bc we are trash)
my NOTP: SO MANY. SO, SO MANY. but mostly Jon/Dany. bc nah.
favorite episode: the one where Jaime finally stops being stupid and leaves King’s Landing and Cersei. (I’m only half-kidding.) can I pick S1E01 when all the Starks were alive and happy and blissfully unaware of the shitstorm coming for them?
saddest death: Grey Wind and Lady. poor doggos ;___; (also: Robb. my boy)
favorite season: s6 was pretty good. lots of RamRam ;D
least favorite season: I don’t actually know tbh
character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: Dany? I mean I don’t hate hate her but I’m definitely not as enthused about her as the majority of the fandom. she’s great and all but… ehh. not for me.
my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: Bronn. BRONN. SUCH TRASH.
my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: Brienne.
my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: N/A.
my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: gonna put Brienne/Tormund here bc the Jaime/Brienne shipper in me refuses to let me enjoy this XD but Tormund is precious and I live for their interactions

THE WHITE QUEEN 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WEEK | Day 1 (August 14): Favorite Episode → 1.01 In Love With the King
You are a girl from the house of Lancaster, and you live in a country that is divided. You may not fall in love with a York king, unless there is some profit in it for you. Your life will not be easy because you wish it to be so. You will have to wade through blood and you will know loss, you must be stronger.
