Story - summary

No one cares about Caprico, only the weapons he makes for them. He is used to living and working alone, dealing in the black market, and serving as the sentinel for the Justiciars.

In the middle of his latest project, someone bangs on the door. He checks the front door camera and sees a Wasteland girl, bloodied and desperate to be let in. He tries to ignore her, but eventually gets irritated by her knocking. She begs for help, refusing to leave. Caprico gets an idea. He brings her inside and uses her as an experiment for new cyborg parts. He had been planning to test on himself again, but he tells himself that he is only doing the experiment now because the girl is a better subject.

Regardless of his true feelings on the matter, the experiment is a success, and the girl tries out her new prosthetic legs. She loves them. As she gets used to them, she explores the rest of the mechanic factory. She even befriends the little roomba and introduces herself as Phyllis.

Caprico tries to distance himself from her, keeps telling himself that he doesn’t care about the little girl... but no one has appreciated his work before. To Phyllis, machines, plants, and humans are all fascinating and similar.

Phyllis tries to pay him, but he spots the Justiciar coin immediately. He asks how she got it, since she has no clue that this is the key to joining the elite group. She explains that her pet eagle, Dada, had found it and brought it to her. But when a criminal gang blew up her village, it killed her eagle and destroyed her legs. The coin was all she had left.

He realizes that his machines did that. He says nothing about it, but he makes her a hologram set that displays an eagle. He had never before cared who used his weapons or where or why. But this is the least he can do for the child.

Unfortunately, that same criminal gang finds Phyllis outside the factory and attacks her, hoping to use her as a bargaining chip for the Justiciar coin she gave to Caprico. He tries to ignore them, hoping they’ll give up. Instead, they get more hostile.

Finally, Caprico is ready to confront them. He tosses the coin onto the ground. The leader of the gang rushes forward - he explodes as soon as he touches the coin. Everyone panics and runs away... all except Phyllis. She knows that he made the bombs that destroyed her village and eagle. She still thinks he’s not as bad as he makes himself out to be.

But for her sake, Caprico puts on a cold front and shuts her out of the factory. Finally, she leaves. He never sees her again... although someone has been sending him letters every month.

Connections

-Caprico acts as sentry for the Justiciars. When Nikki and Momo visit him in Vol. 1, Chapter 5, you learn that no one gets to the Justiciars’ underground city without going through him first.

-In his Reflection for Into the Ruins, Caprico reveals that he sees machines and humans as equal: both fascinating in how they work and come to life. It’s one of the reasons he became a cyborg. Unfortunately, no one understood his point of view, so they kicked him off Ruin Island. He’s been ostracized by society ever since.

-Phyllis tells Caprico that she saw Zoey once in Wasteland. So far, the only Reflection Zoey has in Wasteland is Spirit of Anuwa, so it is likely that the tribe she visits in that story is the same as Phyllis’.

Fun Facts

-Even though he knows her name, Caprico still refers to Phyllis as “girl” in his memories.

-All Caprico suits are purple attributes.

-This suit is catalogued under the Ruin suits, but it is a fusion of Ruin and Wasteland styles.

-In the Index section for this Reflection, Caprico reveals that Phyllis loved singing Wasteland songs and he would have to correct her. She figured out that he himself was from Wasteland. He confirms it in the Index when he says “he denies it because those meaningless memories have been erased from his head long ago.

Story - summarized

Momo wants to audition for the upcoming movie “Space Panda.” He easily gets the part... the hardest part is training for the role. The film crew is on a tight budget and schedule, and they can’t afford reshoots.

First challenge is food. The crew will provide meals, but Momo is expected to eat at least some of the bamboo from the set. And Momo doesn’t like the taste of plain bamboo. So, he and Nikki search for the best bamboo recipes.

His latest attempt causes an explosion in the kitchen. Momo, covered in soot, dashes to the other room for shelter. When it calms down, he returns and examines his recent attempt. Rice and BBQ are falling out of the bamboo tube, but it surprisingly tastes amazing. With this, Momo is set for the filming, as well as practice eating the bamboo for his character.

The next challenge is to practice in zero-gravity space. If Momo is going to be in the film, he needs to get his movements just right. No reshoots. Thankfully, Marina and Aeon build a zero-g studio on the Ark for Momo to practice in. It takes a few tries before he is able to maintain his balance in the air. Marina flips through the air gracefully, but Momo’s paws are too small for grabbing the rings on the ceiling.

Just as he’s about to give up, Nikki suggests practicing with snacks instead. Momo easily dives through the air to collect his yummy reward. He learns flips, dives, and poses to do in the air. He is all set for the filming!

...But when the group watches the practice footage from the zero-g studio, something isn’t right. Besides the goofy technical errors, Momo seems less like he’s a determined and brave captain leading his people to shelter, and more like he’s about to fight in wars and conquer all of space. Momo ponders over his role before he finally gets into character.

Thanks to all of Momo’s practice and hard work, the filming wraps up smoothly. The film “Space Panda” is a hit! A local zero-g gym wants to sponsor Momo. Proudly, he heads over to the studio where some kids are already playing in the air.

One of them flails and gets upset when he can’t reach the walls. Momo leaps into the room and deftly saves the kid. All of them recognize him as Captain So Panda and want photos with him and autographs. Momo flourishes under the spotlight.

After a fulfilling day, Momo heads home, paws laden with gifts and cards from his new fans. He puts them someplace safe, and then he focuses on the gift wrappings as he sorts the recycling. He still feels in character and wants to protect his planet and his people, just like Captain Panda.

-Momo isn’t the only one involved in the film industry. Mercury’s Reflection Glittering Era shows how he took over the Flying Star film company.

-Whether it’s for a movie role like this or a Halloween costume for Nikki like in Pumpkin Witch, Momo always does extensive research for his project.

Fun Facts

-This is the global server’s first collab suit, done with iPanda.

-Momo had a hard time finding a way to make bamboo tasty for him because cats are carnivores. They mainly eat meat.
