Torso (Italian: I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale, lit. 'The Bodies Bear Traces of Carnal Violence') is an Italian giallo film directed by Sergio Martino. The film was released in 4th January 1973.

Plot (it may contain spoilers)

The murder of two college students (and one's boyfriend) leads to a manhunt for the killer, whose chief weapon is a red and black ascot used to strangle his victims. When a young college student discovers that she recognizes the murder weapon, she becomes a target of the killer and agrees with one of her friends, who is friends with their art history teacher, to stay at a local villa located on a nearby cliff.

However, the isolated cliffside villa offers no protection from the killer, who runs over the street vendor who he buys his scarves from and who tried to blackmail him for his silence. At the same time, a young college student who is obsessed with one of the four girls and has been actively stalking her (and wearing a similar red and black scarf) and one of the locals in town, go up to the villa to spy on the girls only to be ruthlessly killed. The young student who invited her friend to the villa breaks her ankle and a doctor gives her a sedative; as such, she is asleep when the killer makes his way into the house and kills the girls, including the one who can identify him. She wakes up in time to watch him dismember the bodies but hides to avoid detection. However, the killer locks the house, trapping her inside while he prepares to dispose of the body. When he realizes that the last girl is alive, he baits her into coming out of the room she is hiding in and reveals himself to her.

The killer is the art history teacher that the final girl had befriended. He is revealed to be insane and anti-woman, stemming from a childhood incident where as a kid, his brother stole a young girl's doll and placed it near the edge of the cliff. He would only retrieve it if the young girl let him see her naked crotch; she reluctantly agreed but as he stood over the edge of the cliff to retrieve the doll, the young girl freaked out and screamed, causing him to lose his balance and fall to his death. This led to him to believe all women are lying whores that use men and cause them nothing but death in the process. He reveals to his female student/friend that the first two victims were students of him who seduced him into a three way and then blackmailed him with the knowledge of the affair. He then killed the rest at the villa to cover his tracks and reveals that his scarf was the opposite color scheme of the male student he killed: black on red instead of red on black. However, as he begins to kill the young woman to ensure his crime spree is never exposed, the  doctor shows up and after a struggle, kills the teacher.

Fabułę i nastrój w swoim pełnokrwistym giallo Sergio Martino podzielił i pokroił tak, jak zamaskowany morderca fachowo kroi ciała swoich ofiar, przede wszystkim kobiet. "Torso" wybija swój czas rytmem nadanym przez przygotowane na medal giallo, by gwałtownie na ostatnie 25 minut przeobrazić się w brutalny thriller naznaczony oddechem plugawego horroru. Obie części idealnie współgrają, druga jest wynikiem pierwszej, zagadka kryminalna sprawnie funkcjonuje na drugim planie, by w finale wybić ze zdwojoną mocą. Sergio Martino wystąpił więc w "Torso" jako filmowiec, który sprawnie żongluje klimatem, trzyma mocno w garści zarówno gatunek, jak i sprytnie wypuszcza mylące nas tropy. O ile w pierwszej części jesteśmy wciągnięci w zagadkę, w drugiej chodzi już tylko o przetrwanie. Zaczyna się klasycznie, chociaż tu nawet umiejscowienie akcji jest ważne o tyle, by odwrócić uwagę widza. Mowa o prześlicznym mieście prosto z pocztówki. To Perugia (w której film był kręcony) wypełniona turystami, ale przede wszystkim studentami uczęszczającymi na tutejszy uniwersytet. W centrum wydarzeń znajduje się grupka przyjaciół i znajomych z kilkoma ślicznymi (a jakże) dziewczętami, które swój czas spędzają pomiędzy wykładami, włóczeniu się po okolicy, odrzucaniu zakusów natarczywych adoratorów czy flirtowaniu z profesorami. Gdy jednak ginie w brutalny sposób jedna z nich, zaczyna się robić niewesoło. Odnalezione zwłoki kolejnej zmuszają resztę studentów do podjęcia konkretnych kroków. Część wyjeżdża, inni (czwórka przyjaciółek) zaszywają się w pięknej willi na skraju skarpy z widokiem na urokliwe małe miasteczko. Złoczyńca nie zamierza odpuścić takich kąsków i wyrusza za nimi serwując widzom niezapomniane krwawe przeżycia.

Sergio Martion kładzie nacisk na nagie kobiety, kilka smakowicie spreparowanych scen z ich udziałem, morderstwa, ale również napięcie. Jako wytrawny b-klasowiec dostarcza nieprzebranych emocji. I chociaż cała pierwsza godzina przygotowuje nas do eksplozji, to i tak nie wyjdziemy z niej cało. Tropy z pierwszej części filmu są podrzucane naprędce i w takiej ilości, że wystarczyłoby na dwa kolejne filmy. A jednak to się sprawdza, nasza uwaga jest odpowiednio zaprzęgnięta do rozpracowywania podejrzanych. Jedna z ofiar została uduszona chustą, którą inna dziewczyna widziała u kogoś na szyi. Zadziałał tu podobny patent jak w Głębokiej czerwieni. Zarówno bohaterka, jak i widzowie próbują sobie przypomnieć czy aby nie widzieli już mordercy (u Dario Argento wertowaliśmy klastry pamięci w poszukiwaniu wizerunku sprawcy). 

"Torso" wychodzi trochę poza ramy żółtego nurtu, a Sergio Martino objawia się nie tylko jako sprawny filmowiec i znawca gatunku, ale w finale dodatkowo mógłby stanąć u boku samego Hitchcocka serwując podobną atmosferę i precyzyjne dopracowanie każdej sceny. Przemyślane sekwencje, montaż, kilka ciekawych pomysłów i ujęcia, które do ostatnich minut trzymają widza w niepewności. Nie decyduje się wszak Martino na wykończenie scen nacechowanych przemocą momentami gore. Pozostawia kilka fragmentów dla naszej wyobraźni, a tam gdzie trzeba nawet oszczędnie dawkuje brutalność.

Dodatkowo można odnieść słuszne wrażenie, że "Torso" łapie się na kino formatu mocno sfeminizowanego. Mężczyźni u Martino to postaci ze wszech miar lubieżne, wszyscy są podejrzani i w gruncie rzeczy każdemu z nich do twarzy byłoby z nożem i w masce. Kobieta w Torso jest zawsze narażona na pożądliwy wzrok, niewybredne żarty. Martino stawia więc w centrum kobietę, która od mężczyzn musi się opędzać, a każdy z nich stanowi potencjalne zagrożenie (nawet jeżeli na chwilę przybiera maskę miłego i usłużnego). Gdy zna się już trochę Sergio Martino można być przygotowanym na to, że twórca potrafi być nieobliczalny i do końca nie byłem pewny, która z kobiet zajmie pozycję final girl. W ten sposób wypada czytać Torso jako jeden z proto-slasherów. Przecież wcale nie jest powiedziane, która z tych wspaniałych dziewczyn przetrwa do końca. A może wszystkie? Na ekranie zobaczymy piękną Angelę Covello, wspaniałą Suzy Kendall (brytyjska diva, której szczyt popularności przypadł na lata 60. i 70.), eteryczną Tinę Aumont, boską Carlę Brait. Każda z nich zasługuje wszak na finał, ale z pewnością też każda jest narażona na ostrze antagonisty. Sergio Martino pokazał co można uzyskać, gdy miesza się gatunki, gdy za kryminałem idzie odważnie horror, wyprzedza żółty nurt i powala na ziemię widza wieńcząc film drastyczną naturą tego nieokiełznanego nurtu.

Ok, so in the past weeks (I think since November, more or less) I'm watching/ re-watching some Les Miserables adaption, together with @clumsyhobbit.

For now we watched the 1995 concert, 2014 Broadway musical, 2019 concert, 1964 Italian serie, 1978 movie, and 4 episodes of 2018 BBC serie. We yet programmed to finish the BBC serie and then 2012 movie (which I saw on my own many times) and Shojo Cosette anime (where I saw only few episodes).

Soon or later we need to watch also the 2010 concert, the 1998 movie and 2000 mini serie.

But, for now, I think that I could show you my "Dream Cast", even if it maybe will be updated in the future.

I love the 1964's Grantaire (I can’t find his name, sorry) as everytime is on screen he cracks me up, he’s perfect as acting as a drunk dude (even if he looks as a 45 years old man, definitely too much old for a student! XD).

But, on a side note, for Grantaire happens the same thing I said of Gavroche, that every time I imagine him, is George Blagden (2012 movie) that appears.
