A Night in the Life of a Concert Photographer
~By Randy J Byrd~
The process as a concert photographer has changed for me over the years. It's crazy when I think about it. Went from me just using my phone to a throw-around camera I thought I had no use for full-on professional DSLRs. Did I ever really set out to do this damn thing? I did have dreams, but I never took them seriously until it got me into magazines and eventually Doomed and Stoned.
Originally, photography was something I took up to keep my mind off of drinking while at shows. I never asked anyone if I could bring my camera, I just did it. Eventually, I got into shows at bigger venues that deemed it necessary to have zero flash and limited the photo pit to three songs per band. Now I never use flash unless its for artistic purposes. I still like to hog the front row at smaller venues, because hey I'm there to listen to music and see my favorite bands like everyone else!
Live at Maida Vale BBC - Vol. II by Baroness
How exactly does an average night go for me as a concert photographer? These days it's actually planned well in advance so I know what funding I need and how much time off I need from work. Yes, sometimes I get in for free. However, for the most part I pay my way in unless its offered or I'm flat broke. I've driven all over the country to go to festivals and shows. It really depends on my mood and how much time I have to burn. I've shot bands on all levels of the field. Signed and unsigned.
God Luck and Good Speed by Weedeater
Once I get contact from a manager or band member that is in charge of press, we negotiate terms. Be it as simple as me getting into the venue or as complicated as getting reimbursed for travel expenses such as food, lodging and transport. This is in addition to negotiating time to talk with the artists, which for me will often come via promotional shoots or conducting an interview for D&S.
I love shooting press promos and doing interviews, it's just like catching up with old friends. I love shooting the shit. I love road stories and hearing about pranks. If I can get this done around a dinner table, it's always a blast because you can get a better flow if everyone is fat and happy -- and for those that drink, getting the juices going.
Blood Drive by ASG
As far as actual shooting events, I try to scope out all new venues at least an hour before to get a gist of how staff operate and what the room is like. Where the shooting area is for bigger venues. If possible I try to shoot the room to get a baseline of camera settings. Sometimes that's tough because show lighting can differ from soundcheck to showtime (also from band to band).
7 Days Of Smoke by I Am The Liquor
I've shot entirely dark rooms and I've shot entirely lit rooms. I can do it all, but concert photography can be tricky if you shoot 100% manually. It took me five years to shoot manual. It takes time and as fast as some artists are, if you're not practiced up you will miss a lot more shots than if you were on a semi-auto mode or an all-out automatic mode.
I also tend to get food within the venue, as well. I try to see in advance if they have coffee. I don't drink alcohol anymore, so sometimes I get a hot black coffee to fend off the demons.

Love - Da Capo
Love released their second album, Da Capo, in the same year as their first one, 1966. It was recorded in five days, and released in November. It was preceded by the release of the single 7 and 7 Is b/w No. Fourteen, which was an outtake from their first album. 7 and 7 Is was recorded in June and hit the stores in July, topping out at No.33 on the Billboard Top 100. That song was then included on Da Capo, which after its’ release reached No.80 on the Billboard Top 200.
The band consisted of five members when 7 and 7 Is was recorded, but was up to seven by the time they recorded the album. The five existing band members when the eponymous Love album was recorded were founders Arthur Lee vocals and guitar, Johnny Echols vocals and lead guitar, plus Bryan McLean vocals and guitar, Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer drums, and Ken Forssi bass. While recording 7 and 7 drummer Pfisterer had a particularly difficult time with the frantic rhythm. After about 30 takes he was intermittently replaced by Lee, who continued to teach Pfisterer how to play the parts. It’s said that it took over seventy takes to get it done. Both Lee and Echols stated that Pfisterer is the drummer on the released version. Something that made the song particularly memorable was an explosion, toward the end, of a nuclear bomb. The use of this in the song is an example of what is called musique concrète; the utilization of recorded sounds in a music composition. The song then shifts to a peaceful bluesy fade to conclusion. According to Bruce Botnick, the sound for the explosion was “taken from a sound effects record”. ”He speculated that it was a recording of a gunshot slowed down.”
Once that was completed, musicians added to Love were Tjay Cantrelli (born John Barberis) on woodwinds and Michael Stuart on drums. Snoopy switched over from drums to harpsichord and organ. The now seven-piece band recorded the balance of Da Capo from September 27 to October 2 at Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. The producer was Paul Rothchild who had just finished with The Doors first album a few days before, but Da Capo was released two months before The Doors album. The two sides of the Love record couldn’t have been more different. The six songs on side one varied in style and delivery, and among them was what critic Robert Christgau called, “the perfect rocker”, 7 and 7 Is. Side 2 had one song, which was simply a long jam.
Instrumentally the band explored new concepts on Da Capo, some rarely seen in rock music up to that time. This included harpsichord, and the use of classical music, in what could be termed “baroque pop”. They explored jazz-driven jams and use of sax and flute blended into garage rock, folk-rock, psychedelia, blues, R&B and punk rock, not that all those had actually been defined yet.
Concerning the new band members, Michael Stuart (later Stuart-Ware), was playing drums with Sons of Adam in Los Angeles. The leader of that band was Randy Holden, an unsung guitar god in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Stuart made a point of seeing Love play live at a club called Bito Lito and appreciated them for their “distinctive raw energy”, as he called it. Having had a jazz background, Stuart was surprised when he joined up with Love, just after they had recorded the single 7 and 7 Is, “to discover the album was geared to have a kind of “jazz rock” flavor.” Tjay Cantrelli (born John Barberis) departed Love, after being its’ reed player, by the end of 1967. In the early ‘70s he was in the band Geronimo Black fronted by drummer Jimmy Carl Black of Mothers of Invention fame. On the band’s eponymous album, Cantrelli is the credited composer of two songs plus co-writer of two others. In the early ‘80s he was also associated with Black’s band, Grandmothers. Not much is known about Cantrelli’s life or career other than his stints with these bands. According to several sources Cantrelli/Barberis died in 1985.
TRACKS
Greeting the ears in the first cut is Pfisterer’s harpsichord proclaiming the rocker, Stephanie Knows Who. Immediately announcing a new direction for the band, they ripped through hard psychedelic rock with a flute-driven jazz interlude. While in most of Da Capo Arthur Lee vocalizes in softer tones, on Stephanie Knows Who he sings in a harsh style, similar to much of their first album. The song, written by Lee, is about a mutual friend of his and Bryan MacLean, for whom both had affections for.
Orange Skies comes next and is an immediate shift to the aforementioned softer tones. Sung by Arthur Lee, but written by Bryan MacLean, the song is the first he had ever written. Done so at the time he was a roadie with The Byrds, MacLean said he based the melody on a section of Roger McGuinn’s guitar arrangement of The Bells of Rhymney. It is built with jazz shadings using Latin rhythms, with a somewhat fanciful air about it. Critic Matthew Greenwald points out an influence of “Broadway musicals (such as Oklahoma and Carousel)”, as well similarity “to Stevie Wonder's My Cherie Amour.”
With the pop of a cork the mellowness continues into the next track, as does the latin jazz influence, this time a bossa nova rhythm. ¡Que Vida!, (What is Life, in Spanish) is the stated title, but the working title is With Pictures and Words. Several sources indicate that the melody is based on the Bacharach/David song Lifetime of Loneliness. Lyrically composer Lee speaks not only of life, but of death and reincarnation as well. The melody flows freely throughout, but as Matthew Greenwald indicates, “although the chords always resolve, they go in surprising directions. He also felt this was a "true groundbreaking composition for Arthur Lee”. Another pop of the cork and ¡Que Vida! finishes with quiet rustling sleigh bells leading into the crashing guitars of Seven and Seven Is. That song was addressed above. ¡Que Vida! was released in March 1967 as a single, b/w Hey Joe (off of the Love album), but didn’t reach the Billboard Hot 100.
Incorporating Bryan MacLean’s Spanish-style fingerpicking, flowing harpsichord ala Pfisterer, and precision percussion work by Michael Stewart, The Castle is, in effect, a mini-suite. Whether physical or in the mind, the theme of travel is something Arthur Lee explored in songs like this at the time. He does this for just over a minute into the song after which the rest of the journey winds through creative instrumental twists and turns. The ending note rests on a precipice, but not quite landing where one might expect.
The final number on side one has been suggested to possibly be “the best song Lee ever wrote” by Richie Unterberger. Arthur was inspired to write She Comes in Colors by a Love fan named Annette. According to bandmate Johnny Echols, “Annette came to shows “wearing these outrageous gypsy clothes.” The whimsical flute played throughout by Tjay Cantrelli, gives a flowing, almost airborne feel to it. The baroque pop meets folk-jazz melody incorporated many “strange chords”, per J. Emerson in his book Forever Changes: Arthur Lee and His Book of Love. Johnny Echols considered it the most difficult song on the album to record because of that. She Comes in Colors was released as a single b/w Orange Skies in December 1966. While it got significant airplay in Los Angeles and several other localities it failed to break into the Billboard Hot 100.
The final track of the album takes up side two. At just under nineteen minutes its’ length extended past the few other long tracks out there by seven or eight minutes. Revelation had developed into a concert showcase for the band. Originally titled John Lee Hooker, it is a blues/R&B jam that takes up the vast majority of the track. The brief intro however, is the Giga from J.S. Bach’s Partita No.1, which reprises for a slightly longer time at the conclusion. The early stages of the jam hold promise, but that only lasts about five minutes before it devolves into less exciting territory. Arthur Lee said that they did the long jam “so the musicians could express themselves.” What transpired is a run through by each musician, voice, guitar, harp, sax, bass, drums all bookended by harpsichord. As seems to be with many things, some say it’s “tedious” (Richie Unterberger) and some say, “I like 'Revelation', what of it?”, according to a RateYourMusic reviewer ‘acidballroom’. Generally Revelation gets panned, but it’s not the worst thing that ever happened on record.
There are those who say that if Revelation had been shorter, while concentrating on its best features, it may have been better received. In any case, long songs or jams, while not appealing to everyone, started being recorded more often. Longer tracks in general were appearing more as well. Radio, particularly the increase in FM availability, helped albums increasingly become the greater source over singles for the buying public. To this end Revelation was assuredly one of the very earliest examples.
Of the the three or four songs that exceeded ten minutes in length at that time, The Rolling Stones’ Goin’ Home, which was recorded for their artistic breakthrough album, Aftermath, was the true herald of what was to come. Goin Home, ‘only’ 11:35 in length, was recorded at RCA studios in Los Angeles in the midst of a Stones tour. Interestingly there has been some dispute about the relationship between it and Revelation. Tracks for Aftermath were laid down in December 1965 and March 1966. The record was released in April, seven months before Love’s Da Capo. Yet while the Stones were in LA they made the rounds of a few clubs. As Arthur Lee put it on the back cover of the 1980 Best of Love compilation by Rhino Records, “The Rolling Stones saw us play (Revelation) at the Brave New World, and they recorded a long song on their next album. After our album came out, I got the blame for copying them!”
Overall, the album fell just short of a masterpiece. The six-song first side is, at the very least, a full psychedelic potpourri. One could say that overall, the music hits just about everything but country music and the kitchen sink. The general consensus seems to be that some of the songs written by Arthur Lee (along with Orange Skies by Bryan MacLean), are the best, or among the best they’ve done. The follow-up, Forever Changes, is indeed considered among the best rock records ever issued. Still, at least some of the songs on Da Capo’s side one can stand toe-to-toe with many from Forever Changes. The decision to record Revelation had a definite impact on the fate of the album. However, the fact that the band chose not to tour mostly beyond the LA area may have caused the most damage to sales. This being true not only for Da Capo, but with all three of their first records and the singles issued from them as well. They did find their way up to San Francisco and thereabouts resulting in stronger popularity for their music in the wider Bay Area.
—————————
My impetus for getting Da Capo was two-fold. I was quite excited about the single “Seven & Seven Is” being included in the album: the other being a nineteen minute song on one whole side. It was about the time I purchased it that I had started going to the record store conveniently located in the shopping center across from my high school. Usually along with my good buddy Dave, I spent many a day after school there, listening to records through earphones on the store’s turntables. Da Capo’s first side was immediately intriguing, while the second side seemed passable. Of course I never even came close to listening to that whole side and undoubtedly missed some of the less appealing aspects of it until listening to it at home.
I was struck by the eclectic nature of the material in Da Capo, which I was personally attracted to. It became pretty simple to listen to songs on side one, and just not flip it to side two. I believe I probably listened to those other songs more often that way. Looking back, I am pretty sure I only listened to Revelation a few times. It wasn’t until I got the CD years later that I did so once again, but that was about it for awhile. Once I began writing my original blog three years before this update, I listened to it in more depth than ever before. That turned out to be quite worthwhile because I finally was able to absorb the good things about the jam.
It’s fair to say that Da Capo is likely my favorite half album, because I truly consider the six songs on side one among the best ones I know, For most albums it’s rare to find all songs to be fully acceptable. With six out of seven songs, the rate of eighty-five percent favorability would make it a pretty incredible record, and well, Da Capo is.
I feel fortunate to have finally seen Arthur Lee play a few of these songs in person. After he had been released from prison when his 1996 weapons conviction was reversed, he renewed his relationship with the band Baby Lemonade. They had become his back up “Love” band in the early ‘90s before his arrest and conviction. In 2003-4 they did a Forever Changes tour in Europe and the U.S. When they played Great American Music Hall in San Francisco CA, on January 16, 2004, I was front and center. After completing the entire Forever Changes album live, they played some selections from the Love repertoire, which included Orange Skies and Seven and Seven Is. Within three years Arthur Lee died of leukemia. More recently Baby Lemonade joined forces with one of the Love founders, Johnny Echols, forming Love Revisited. I’ve seen them three times now, and on all occasions those two songs were included in the show. Great stuff, but the big thrill still remains the opportunity to have seen the amazing Arthur Lee in person.

Hello, Mr, Wray? This is Attorney General Barr, DOJ. You are aware I am your boss?
Yes sir.
There has been stalling by the FBI in turning over Muller Dossier documents for at least two years. Is that correct?
Yes sir.
This is a direct order. I want every document requested or subpoenaed on my desk in two hours!
Sir, I can...
You are fired! Vacate the building immediately. Marshal's are waiting outside your door.

I think President Trump was responsible for Terisa May's resignation recently and partly responsible for Boris Johnson's election to Prime Minister.
Why do I say that? It leads the way open to both Steele and Dearlove being eventually extradited to the US to face charges relating to the Fake Steele Dossier and the unlawful spying related to it.

"Most hard core liberals have psychologically deprived backgrounds which causes them to invoke defense mechanisms which causes them to seek power over others and develop a “wounded” world view which causes them to express the depths of their psychologically damaged personality."
"Liberals are exercising power over others that have achieved legitimate success and they are trying to get the achievers of society to pay for these often phony liberal causes. This gives the liberal a sense of entitlement to act out against the successful among us and take what is not theirs. This helps to restore feelings of power to the liberal that they lacked in their deprived childhoods which are typically characterized by neglect."
"In the deprived psychological environment that characterizes so many liberals, they are typically angry at the world. And they often seek to inflict pain on the successful because they are angry. This defense mechanism is called displacement. They just don’t want to dominate the political narrative, they seek to inflict pain on a personal level to those who have experienced success. This is what fundamentally causes liberals to lack respect for the rule of law and just old-fashioned human decency. They seek to hurt successful people and to tear down the pillars of society."
"The left uses their self-contrived and often invented self-indignation as the excuse to justify inflicting pain on others. Rationalization is defined as making excuses to justify one’s actions. This is also the well-spring of almost all genocide, both past and present in a “they deserved it mentality."
"There is a final defense mechanism that liberals often employ. Because of their psychologically deprived background, we frequently see use of the defense mechanism called overcompensation. This is where an individual will perceive some personal deficiency (eg lack of academic success) and then seek to excel in another area (eg athletic prowess). In the case of a mentally ill liberal, their lack of personal success and acceptance from their peers, in their collective childhoods, leads them to excel in other areas, namely, liberal causes which frequently inflicts pain on successful people."
"Liberals are largely representative of people who have been psychologically wounded by life and they spend their adult life getting back at the very power structure that they blame for their psychological pain as a result of their own personal shortcomings.
Why do liberals not respect the sanctity of life (eg late-term abortions)? Their psychological pain keeps them from feeling empathy by the youngest members of our society as they are torn apart limb by limb for their body parts. Do I need to point out the reaction formation of liberal females who are overcompensating for their perceived personal rejection. Beautiful women come in all shapes and sizes and I don’t typically promote stereotypes, but ask a non-liberal male about the appearance of many liberal females. Many times, it borders on bizarre. The same can be said for the emasculated males who grew up expecting trophies for participation, instead of achievement. And when achievement does not come, liberal causes designed to illegitimately redistribute wealth becomes a frequent mantra from the left.
On the surface, liberal causes makes no sense. Their behavior makes no sense until one realizes that we are dealing with damaged individuals whose internal anger causes them to seek to bring harm others under the guise of performing some twisted form of justice (ie social justice).
At the end of the day, these psychologically impaired people make good warriors for the global elite. They are actively working to tear down the family, destroying Christianity and taking down America on behalf of the elite who want one-world government that the elite controls. In short, at the end of the day, liberals again find themselves being abused as they are relegated to the role of useful idiots for the express purposes of the Satanic mentality that underlies those who would subjugate all of us on a global scale."
"These useful idiots (liberals) would do well to examine the fate of people like the Brown-shirts of Nazi Germany. Their fate is the fate of useful idiots. If and when the global elite ever seizes total control over the planet, they will have no use for liberals. Being a liberal will have a very short shelf-life under the New World Order’s authority where a rebellious and psychologically damaged mind will not be tolerated by a totalitarian regime."

Dan,
1) Why don't you hear anyone talking about Assange lately?
2) Why don't you hear a word about Admiral Rogers (former head of NSA under Obama/Trump) regarding all of the RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA narrative?
3) Why is Wray slow-playing/stalling the release of requested info?
I'll tell you why.. 1) Because Assange is key to this whole Russia story and US Atty. Durham is retrieving all kinds of fascinating info from Assange (think Seth Rich... "hacked" DNC emails (blame RUSSIA)...). 2) Admiral Rogers is a true patriot and saw what was occurring against (future) President Trump and logged everything (perhaps "mislabeled" to avoid cleanup by the corrupt Intelligence Community under Obama?). You can bet he's chatting with Durham too. 3) Because of Durham's ongoing investigation and they don't want to announce that publicly because that then confirms there is even an investigation into certain people to begin with. Keep it all under wraps until Durham is ready to start handing down indictments.
They have nowhere to go. The walls are closing in and the American people are going to see a miraculous show this fall and through the next year. Justice is coming.

USA: Jack Kleinsinger's Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala Thursday, February 28, 2019 8 PM BMCC TRIBECA Performing Arts Center
Tickets & Info
Each year, savvy jazz fans look forward to the annual Highlights In Jazz series. For almost a half century, the Jack Kleinsinger-produced events have brought together a multitude of beloved jazz musicians spanning an eclectic mix of generations and styles. The 2019 season is no exception, with four stellar concerts featuring some of the brightest luminaries in jazz today.
The new season gets off to a roaring start with the Highlights In Jazz 46th Anniversary Gala, featuring pianist/vocalist Daryl Sherman, saxophonist Houston Person, trumpeter Warren Vaché, clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski, pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Boots Maleson, and guitarist James Chirillo. And as always at Highlights In Jazz events, a special surprise guest will be on hand.
Listeners will be treated to unforgettable performances as these seasoned jazz veterans mix it up together and make the magic happen. “Producing all-star jams is my stock in trade,” Kleinsinger notes. “What you’ll hear at these concerts is different from what you’d hear in a club. These great musicians get together here to play with people they don’t play with every night of the week.”
A mainstay of the New York jazz scene, Daryl Sherman has built a devoted following with her talent and creativity as a pianist and singer, and her distinctive take on the Great American Songbook. A frequent guest on Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz,” Daryl presided over Cole Porter’s Steinway at the Waldorf-Astoria for 14 years, and was legendary bandleader Artie Shaw’s vocalist of choice. She’s appeared with Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Bob Dorough, Wycliffe Gordon, Dick Hyman, Dave McKenna, Jay Leonhart, Howard Alden, Joe Temperley, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, to name just a few.
Saxophonist Houston Person is among the most in-demand tenor players in New York today. He’s known for his affinity with singers, honed during his 20-plus years with vocalist Etta Jones. Besides releasing dozens of albums as a leader in the company of greats such as Ron Carter, Steve Nelson, Cedar Walton, Bill Charlap, Joey DeFrancesco, Bernard Purdie, Les McCann, Benny Green, Grady Tate, Curtis Fuller, and other notables, Person has appeared on scores more as a sideman.
Is there anything trumpeter, cornetist, and flugelhornist Warren Vaché can’t do? The New Jersey-born brass star has made his mark from Broadway pit orchestras to big bands to free-wheeling jazz ensembles. He’s appeared in the company of Howard Alden, George Shearing, Bucky Pizzarelli, Bill Charlap and dozens of others. Vaché lists Louis Armstrong, Roy Eldridge, Bobby Hackett, Fats Navarro, Tom Harrell and Ruby Braff among his favorite trumpet players.
Saxophonist/clarinetist Ken Peplowski was still in elementary school when he landed his first pro gig, playing in a Polish polka band in his native Cleveland. From that moment, he knew the musical life was his destiny. Ken studied with Sonny Stitt, and played with classic bands like the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and with Benny Goodman. He’s also collaborated with Mel Torme, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, and Bill Charlap. Ken has released several albums as a leader and appeared on more than 400 recordings as a sideman.
Norman Simmons wears many hats, all of them gracefully: composer, arranger, pianist, educator, and more. In his native Chicago, he led the house band at one of the most renowned clubs of the era The Beehive, backing greats such as Wardell Gray, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker. Besides providing the arrangement for Ramsey Lewis’ hit “Wade in the Water,” Simmons is widely known for his work with legendary vocalists including Carmen McRae, Anita O’Day, Betty Carter, and Joe Williams, and for his special feel for the compositions of the great Duke Ellington.
In-demand bassist Boots Maleson is a veteran of ensembles large and small, including the big bands of Harry James, Jimmy Dorsey, and Bob Alexander, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has also accompanied Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones, Jaki Byard, Archie Shepp, Kenny Barron, Dexter Gordon, Stanley Cowell, Benny Carter, and Marlene Verplanck, and many others.
Versatile guitarist James Chirillo has been heard with a spectrum of talent that spans Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Wycliffe Gordon, Michael Feinstein, Tony Bennett, Joe Lovano, Marcus Roberts, Dick Hyman, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter, Eddie Durham, Eddie Barefield, Frank Wess, and Joe Wilder. The winner of a composition grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, James has also appeared on Broadway and movie soundtracks.
With the Highlights In Jazz series nudging the half-century mark, Kleinsinger is justly proud of his ongoing legacy as a producer. Since the very first Highlights in Jazz event, “Every concert in the series has been integrated, has included a variety of younger artists and veterans, and has featured a renowned surprise guest. And every year we honor a living jazz great—let’s honor them while they can smell the roses,” he declares. This year’s honoree, Randy Brecker, will be feted at the May 16th concert.
The HIJ series is a favorite destination for New York jazz fans and in-the-know out-of-towners. Besides the lineup of jazz icons onstage, there are often stars to be found in the audience as well—sports greats Venus Williams and Willie Randolph, actors Bette Midler and Alan Alda, and author Kurt Vonnegut, to name just a few.
The secret to the longevity of the beloved Highlights In Jazz series? “We’re doing the concerts other producers don’t do,” Kleinsinger says, “and in the process we’ve outlasted everyone who’s ever done jazz concerts in the history of New York.”
You won’t want to miss a single event in this new season of Highlights In Jazz!

In Conversation with CRYSTAL SPIDERS
~Interview & Photographs by Randy J. Byrd~
Longtime Doomed & Stoned contributor Randy J. Byrd brings us an interview with N.C. fuzz freaks CRYSTAL SPIDERS. Since 2018, Brenna Leath (bass, vox), Tradd Yancey (drums, vox), and crew have released a demo and two full-length records, the most recent of which is 'Morieris' (2021). Get to know the band, what drives them, and their favorite places to hang around Raleigh in the discussion that follows! (Billy Goate, Editor in Chief)
MORIERIS by CRYSTAL SPIDERS
What is the central theme of your latest album, 'Morieris'?
BL: Almost all of the songs loosely reference classical mythology. Our album art and title are a play on “memento mori” - the art is our take on a “white trash still life,” with trashy ephemera from the last couple decades instead of the traditional (e.g., VHS instead of books, a bag of tobacco instead of flowers, a moonshine jar instead of a wine glass). Tradd and I collected items to assemble the still life and my tattoo artist Tyler Pennington of Talon Tattoo in Winston-Salem, NC, did an amazing job painting it.
Is there one particular person that writes the lyrics or is it a group effort?
BL: I write the lyrics. My background is in writing and literature, so rhyming/poetry are pretty second nature.
Do you all write your own parts or are there collaborative efforts going on during the process?
BL: We write our own parts, although sometimes we have suggestions for each other on tweaks or additions. For this album, writing for the guitar parts was a joint effort between me and Mike Dean, and Tradd and I wrote the keyboard/synth parts together.
Tell us about your special guests on the record and how their roles came about.
BL: Mike Dean is a good friend of ours. He is my bandmate in Lightning Born and has worked on the last few albums I’ve been a part of, so when he offered to do guitar work on the album, that was a no-brainer. He is crazy talented and very easy to work with. We have a good dynamic with him in the studio. He’s a stickler for the fundamentals, but he’s always game for an experiment, which we appreciate. For “En Medias Res,” we wanted some orchestral instruments to add some atmosphere and fill out the space. I think we all got excited about the creative potential for something like that. High Priestess Nighthawk from Heavy Temple is an excellent cellist. We had been talking about collaborating for awhile, and this was the perfect opportunity. Meredith Mitchell is a new friend who is a classically trained violinist, so it was exciting to have her in the studio.
Where was it recorded, mixed, and mastered?
TY: Another reason we love working with Dean is that he’s right down the hallway! We recorded everything at a pretty comfortable pace in his studio over a couple months. Nothing’s worse than feeling rushed to get a particular track/part done due to financial or scheduling constraints and we never feel that way working with Mike. He mixes the tracks as well, which we all collaborate on in a back and forth, try-out-on-every-speaker-we-own kinda way. We did that for Molt as well and it’s helped us get that vintage sound while making sure all the individual parts are clear and stand out. Brad Boatright from Audiosiege did the mastering and is great at making the car mirrors shake, so to speak.
Any special gear used during recording to help put the icing on the cake so to speak? I.E. Amps, Guitars, basses, effects units, drums.
TY: Brenna would definitely say her Kramer Vanguard bass. I’ve been using a custom Anchor drum kit for recording which has been known to summon a demon or two, and I know Dean loves his wah that he holds in place with a bottle opener. Straight-to-tape is also a must in terms of that classic sound we all love. We’ve all got our fave piece of gear, but we’re never opposed to playing something else or trying out new sounds. The search for tone never ends!
Molt by CRYSTAL SPIDERS
Any long-term goals, i.e. merch drops, special editions, and splits?
TY: We were talking about splits while making Morieris, and would love to do some longer-form stuff for a split or an extended EP. It never hurts to have extra recorded stuff in the back pocket and be okay with waiting for the perfect home. Special editions are cool as well. As a fan, I’m a sucker for special/limited edition stuff, like the new Boris/EarthQuaker pedal collab or Big Business’ tour EPs. Take my money!
When coming up with new material do you all reflect on past material to move forward?
TY: I think it depends on the release and where we are in the process. When we’re in the initial writing stages, each song is like an island unto itself for the most part. Only after the pieces are mostly in place do we judge how it will fit in the record holistically, or if it fits in at all. When constructing a live show, we absolutely review older songs so everything can flow nicely for the audience. But Brenna and I are seemingly always in the writing stages for other projects as well, so we rarely sit down to listen to the older stuff and go “we need another one of these” or “definitely not doing that again.” The creative train must always move forward.
Are there any side projects that keep your creative juices flowing?
TY: Brenna and I are like sharks. If we stop swimming, we die. She has Lightning Born (with Mike Dean) and The Hell No to keep her creative train rolling (she writes like most people binge-watch TV, btw) and I have Doomsday Profit, which allows me to experiment with a more heavy-hitting, Conan-type style and Positive Punishment, which leans heavy on experimental music and improv. Unless you’re Johnny Ramone, I’m pretty sure every musician has a side-project, even if it’s just in their head. Not every riff will fit with every project, so having a lot of fingers in a lot of pies can provide the perfect home for the perfect riff.
What are you all listening to nowadays?
TY: With all these best-of-2021 lists out, we have a lot of catching up to do. So many excellent releases came out last year; it’s gonna take a couple months to go through them all. Brenna really loves her dark wave and I dig obscure blues, but those will be on hold until we check out all that 2021 brought forth.
BL: I haven’t done a proper year end list yet, but some of my favorite releases this year have been Heavy Temple, Witchcryer, Book of Wyrms, and Erik Larson. The new Monolord and Green Lung were choice, as we knew they would be! My current darkwave jams are Molchat Doma and She Past Away, but Drab Majesty is always in heavy rotation.
Communication Breakdown (Led Zeppelin cover) by The Redux Project
Who inspires you to do what you do?
TY: A major inspiration for me would be Erik Larson. He is such an excellent player, insightful songwriter, and overall good dude, it’s hard not to want to emulate his contributions to the music community, both behind the kit and in front of it. A couple months ago, I had the opportunity to open for US Christmas and Nate Hall would be another individual that inspires me. Eat the Low Dogs was one of those records that stayed in my car for a decade and to share a stage with USX was a dream come true.
BL: That is a tough one. It’s hard to balance the need to create and hone art with. Everything else we have to do to keep the capitalist train trudging forward and daily life on the rails, so I am always amazed by people who do it with flair. I think there are several people I know personally who are big inspirations, like my drummer in Lightning Born, Doza Hawes, who is always pushing himself in every arena (fitness, family, music career). He seems to need a lot less sleep than I do, to be fair!
Any superstitions?
TY: This one I learned from Larson, the hard way: Never ever ever speak ill about your transportation, even jokingly. They’re always listening. Your van is your home and karma can remind you very quickly how important they are in regards to finishing a successful tour. So, Vandolf, if you’re reading this (and I know you are). I love you, buddy. You’re the best and you’re getting more cassette tapes for your birthday.
BL: Beer before liquor, never been sicker; liquor before beer, you’re in the clear. Also, I haven’t personally experienced this, but Rich from Scattered Hamlet told me to never listen to Dokken on the road. Apparently, there’s an associated curse where everything that can go wrong will go wrong. No Rockin’ with Dokken allowed!
Favorite place to eat in your hometown?
TY: Snoopy’s Hot Dogs. Been a Raleigh staple since I was a kid. Plus, depending how hungry you are, you can titrate to the perfect amount of full with the number of dogs you order.
BL: NC is famous for BBQ. For vegan/vegetarian, Fiction Kitchen is an amazing spot in downtown Raleigh that has killer vegan BBQ; for the classic Eastern NC pulled pork style, there’s a spot down the street from me in Garner called (creatively) Carolina BBQ. Although for pescatarian/any-tarian, St. Roch is a killer oyster bar and Cajun/Creole style joint that is one of my current favorite haunts.

Let’s Talk About Red Fang’s ‘Arrows’
~Words & Photos by Randy J Byrd~
What can I say about ‘Arrows’ (2021) by Red Fang? Well if you expect Murder the Mountains you can go jump off a roof. Arrows is a back to roots style record. Is it polished? No. Red Fang did what Red Fang does. What they want.
To anyone shitting on the production of this record needs to get over themself. Quit crying about the sound quality. We are in the middle of a pandemic. Be glad they were able to even put something out. So many bands out here have been forced to call it quits. Tours ruined. That means no money. Me personally. I love this record.
I'm fairly newish to Red Fang. They have been around a while. I've heard a few tunes here and there. Got to see them in 2019. They melted fuckin’ face.
This was my first whole-record listen. Thru and thru front to back. Back to front. I've dedicated time to listening to it in its entirety eight times before sitting down and writing this. Twice in the car. Twice on the Home Stereo of Doom and the other four times in the fones. It passes all these tests.
Right off the bat, it breathes that Pacific Northwest noise. This screams Melvins. It Grooves. Its got an ambiance. Its slows down, it blasts off. It even has strings a la Led Zeppelin. Even has airplane noises in the background of the opening. That is how epic this piece is.
Arrows by Red Fang
Are they not artists? Shouldn’t artists be able to do what they want? There's a lot of turmoil going on nowadays. I mean its been so bleak that people are resorting to gasps going to public parks, recreation facilities, and to national forests in droves.
Maybe these guys were channeling the current climate, both political and economical. Brass balls on them for putting out a record during a pandemic with no source of income via touring. Can't sell merch but so much online. Especially not when everyone shit on their release near immediately. Shame on you for wanting "Wires pt. II," which they seem to allude to with their lead video. Red Fang blew it out the park on this one. Kept me pumped the entire time. Doom on!

The Law of Attraction and What It Means to Your Band
~Bacon's Blog~
Photograph by Randy J Byrd
I’ve been talking with clients a lot lately about the law of attraction, but I’m realizing that it sounds a little bit woo-woo to those not in the know. The law of attraction, in case you weren’t aware, is essentially the idea that if you put out good energy and positive vibes then that will come back onto you. I know it sounds crazy, but it works.
I wanted to break down the ways it can impact your life, in terms of relationships being built, opportunities that you get, and then of course what the long term impacts are. And yes, it will be in the context of band stuff, but most of what I’m about to talk about can apply anywhere in life.
Relationships
This is the place where the law of attraction can be really exciting. Here’s why. Real recognizes real. That simple. If you’re real and hustling and doing stuff with your band, then other people will want to come do stuff with you and you will meet the other hustlers with stuff going on in your scene. Meanwhile if you’re a complainer who does nothing, people won’t want to help you.
Have you ever noticed how all the people who are actively doing things in your scene seem to be friends? Yeah, there’s a reason for that -- because they all are working hard to elevate each other. There’s no gatekeeping, it’s just that you aren’t doing enough to really be a part of their club.
Opportunities
Once you start to build up good relationships then you get good opportunities. Again, you get what you put out. So if you show that you are actively working to get more opportunities and expand your band, then people are going to want to collaborate and give you even more opportunities. It’s really that simple.
Once you get the ball rolling and consistently show that you’re not just sitting around at home being emo, you’re going to seriously grow. I don’t think people understand the power of this. I, as a guy with some influence in the biz, want to give opportunities to people who will actually act on them. Not someone who will complain it’s too hard.
Long-Term Effects
This is where it gets interesting. There’s something tied into the law of attraction called the flywheel effect. It’s essentially the idea that once you get the ball rolling, things will start to just pick up to the point that you can’t stop expanding and getting new opportunities.
The problem, of course, is that you need to start getting something done so that you can get the ball rolling. The first step is the hardest. That’s why you use the law of attraction. You start reaching out and engaging with the people you want to be connected with and then slowly they will start to turn around and connect with you.
So hopefully that makes sense. The law of attraction isn’t magic. It’s just people wanting to collaborate with other real ass motherfuckers. It’s fed by the fact that if you show you hustle when given opportunities, you will get more. Then eventually that will turn into a veritable monster of a band!

LAIR Dish Out Bleak Doom From The Crypts of Richmond
~Interview & Live Photos by Randy J. Byrd~
Album Art by Andrew Griffin
From the moment we heard the self-titled full-length debut by Richmond doom-sludge foursome LAIR, we knew they were gonna be a Doomed & Stoned kinda band. Their sound's not just loud and mean, it's got real heart, too. Then came Lair's new EP, 'At Our End' (2021), and we were smitten.
Of special note is the second track, "Forced March" -- a meditation on the Shelton-Laurel Massacre, which took place during the American Civil War in 1863. Thirteen Union sympathizers were executed by Confederates in the hills of North Carolina. To this day, an overgrown barn still stands on the homestead of their burial (you'll find this reflected in the album art, as well). At Our End is a harrowing experience, through and through.
Frontman and bassist Read Urban was cool enough to answer a few of our questions on behalf of the band, addressing how he and his bandmates Malachi Cresswell (guitar), Anne Marie Dumain (guitar), and Andrew Griffin (drums) get creative, themes that inspire them, and gear they knock about.
At Our End by LAIR
We are the end
A totem to absence
A forfeit of human worth
Scraping our bellies to crawl back to
Something not deserved to be called home
Many voices crashing
Like waves of pain
Upon foreign shore lines
Rising amongst bow’d howls
Wailing as one
Entombed in our shedding skin
Birthing a new deep despair out
Into these clogged streets that reek of
Something not deserved to be called earth
Retching as one
Elaborate on the central theme of 'At Our End' (2021). Are you the primary lyricist?
So far, I have been the primary lyricist for both this release, as well as our previous full-length. My main goal for At Our End was to dwell on the idea that a single moment of horror can encapsulate and relay humanity’s depraved future, even magnifying and twisting the result. And even after accepting all of that, we are still not worthy of anything we have been given.
Do you all write your own parts individually or is there a collaborative effort going into the process?
We all tend to bring riffs to the table and I think that was the case for the most part for the songs on At Our End. Usually, we start with one or two riffs and start building out from there, these songs being an amalgam of riffs from all of us. Some of the riffs start off acoustically, but I don't think we have brought anything to the group fully acoustic. There needs to be a certain amount of volume and weight behind each sustained note to get a sense of how it will work within the context of the full band.
Where was the EP recorded, mixed, and mastered? Any special gear used during recording to help put the icing on the cake?
We recorded with Yave Rust here in Richmond Virginia over a weekend in July. It was a great experience overall. He is super easy to work with and quick to try out new things. He also cooked us Peruvian food everyday which ruled and we ended the weekend with pisco sours! The EP was mixed by Zach Weeks at God City which was super rad to be able to work with him, as well. For the recording, we used pretty standard stuff over the weekend. A lot of Big Muffs and classic "doom" amps on this record. My personal shout out is to Damnation Audio and Night Owl Industries, two solid pedal companies!
Tell us about your label Hand Of Death and why you decided to go with then.
Nathan, who runs Hand of Death, plays in a killer death/doom band Harsh Realm. We got to play with them and meet him last time we were in Asheville, right before the pandemic. We were all stoked to work with him on this release and really happy with the direction and help he gave us. I also really appreciate the breadth of bands Hand of Death has worked with. It doesn’t adhere to just one genre of aggressive music, which is refreshing.
Who designed the cover art?
Andrew shot the cover and the band photos. Since he has a personal connection to the Shelton Laurel massacre, I think we all felt it would be best if he captured and conveyed the themes of the record through those photos. He took a weekend down in North Carolina and brought back the cover photo. It’s been nice keeping a lot of that work within the band and feels like a natural extension of the songs we all work on.
At Our End by LAIR
A column came down
Along the valley’s edge
Carried on southern winds
Black and the hawk sang
There, the Covenant was broken
Our centuries numb us both
Indifferent to our own abysmal wounds
A forced march through hearth and home
A laurel buried in snow beside
The hickory mottled red
Cairn beneath the pine
Thirteen then none
Our hex yet paid
Thirteen then none
And still the women won’t speak
With there being a pandemic currently, any plans on a livestream performance of 'At Our End'?
We are working on some video releases, merch, etc for and after the release. Obviously, COVID makes it all a lot harder so hopefully we don’t catch any major snags. We’ve been working on new material since we recorded and are deciding on what we want to do with these new songs soon. The band is just stoked to get these songs into the world and hope that people dig what we are doing.
What are you all listening to nowadays?
I can’t speak for the rest of the band, but there is a ton of great stuff out right now. My stack of records sitting out right now: Ninth Circle - Awake Horrors, Void Ceremony’s new LP, Loud Night - Mindnumbing Pleasure, the recent Me Saco Un Ojo releases, etcetera. A lot of Bolt Thrower, too. I listen to a lot of hip-hop, as well, and the recent Ka- Descendants of Cain, Boldy James - Price of Tea in China, and Earl Sweatshirt - Feet of Clay are on heavy rotation.
Lair by LAIR
What's the deal with Riff Juice? Is that like Crunk Juice, but for Doom?
Riff Juice is whatever you need it to be. Some days it's a Coors Banquet. Other days it's kombucha or a cup of coffee. As long as you are writing riffs, it's all Riff Juice.

Fighting Back Against Trolls!
~Bacon's Blog~
Photograph by Randy J Byrd
Going up against trolls is a really hard task in the music business. It’s something that I think we all need to deal with at some point, because that’s just sort of the brutal nature of the internet. I wanted to help you with this as it’s something that I think throws a lot of people off, especially early in their music careers.
The thing is, you have to see trolls for what they are and furthermore you need to realize that the best way to kill trolls is with kindness or making fun of yourself. Remember, engaging anger with anger is going to just make you shoot yourself in the foot.
Realizing What Trolls Are
Trolls are sad. Really simple as that. They don’t have some grand design, they’re just lonely assholes with nothing better to do. Seriously, think about what life must be like for some of these people. They’re going on the internet to make fun of random people they don’t even know so they can feel good about themselves.
When you are armed with this information, it becomes a lot easier to handle trolls and deal with their stupidity. I think this perspective really helps folks understand how to deal with them. It becomes more of a matter of pity than anything else at that point.
Killing Trolls With Kindness
One of the keys with trolls is to kill them with kindness. One of my favorite tactics is to act like the trolls comment was actually a compliment. So if they say, "I hope you die because of your horrible music!" then you could reply something like, "Oh, so I can make good music in heaven? Righteous!"
I know it sounds silly, but so often when you turn the other cheek trolls don’t even know what to do and generally just go and leave you alone. It really helps to make things a little bit easier to deal with. I know it’s not always easy in the moment, but trust me above all you do not want to engage trolls with anger. This just leads to further frustration.
Why You Don’t Fight Fire With Fire
Look, most people understand trolls are just random losers from around the internet. They aren’t clever and they don’t have anything going on. If you go in and engage with those people then you are getting dragged down to their level. That’s exactly what they want so they can beat you over the head with their anger.
Don’t give other people this power over you. It gives them free real estate inside your head. Don’t try to troll back because they don’t care, trust me. Instead, just focus on sharing the love and realizing that trolls are just losers who you can’t really do anything about other than say a kind word and try to help be a little less crap.
Anyway, dealing with trolls is an art form. It’s not always self-evident and does require a bit of trial and error. Ultimately, you just gotta realize how sad trolls are, kill them with kindness, and make sure you never get down to their level which is how they win.
