QUALICUM BEACH — BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) officers pulled over a reclined driver who apparently had no idea where he was.
In response to a report of an erratic driver, BCHP officers intercepted a northbound Honda Civic on the evening of April 14 on the Inland Island Hwy. near the Cook Creek Rd. exit where they found two occupants — a fully reclined driver and his passenger suspected of possessing fentanyl.
The driver, a man in his 40’s from Alberta showed signs of impairment and was charged with multiple Motor Vehicle Act infractions and issued a 24-hour driving prohibition.
The passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants. He’s an Oceanside area man in his 30’s, police said.

Restoration, Relaxation, Recharging: A West Coast Break # 3
I’ve made it to Port Hardy, on the north end of Vancouver Island, and a place I’ve never explored before. I left Clare’s home in Qualicum Beach after doing a load of laundry, making my way to the downtown part of the town to explore a little. I checked out a number of cute shops, including a jaunt through the cute little bookstore, then browsed and bought a few things at little boutique shops,…

Fern + Cedar Brewing Company: Green Mountain State NEIPA
Qualicum Beach has a new brewery called Fern and Cedar. Owned by the same people as Parkville’s Mount Arrowsmith Brewing, Fern and Cedar is custom built and opened in December of 2021. Wes Bain, the head brewer, was trained by Mount Arrowsmith’s well-respected head brewer, David Woodward. (David has recently left to brew at Rusted Rake in Nanoose Bay). Wes loves his hazy IPA’s and the love can be…

Those of you following closely will remember that I got a tad frustrated trying to anagram “Freedom Convoy” and “Ambassador Bridge” this autumn. It seemed to me that a bunch of Trucks and Truck Drivers achieving notoriety by blocking a border crossing over the issue of vaccine jabs didn’t need an anagram to send a coded message and I still don’t really understand why the story arrived in my inbox with such emphasis.... but I can see that:
“James Bauder”
is an easy anagram of:
Dream—use JBA (Helijet)
Jab use Dream (eg, Dreamline)
and
Jabs are due—M (eg Montreal or Manitoba)
as well as being evocative of Jaime, Jam and Bauer.

A homeless Vancouver Island man is earning plenty of recognition for the work he’s doing to clean up local highways. Jayson Perry lost his business, then his home during the COVID-19 pandemic. With time on his hands, the former woodworker began cleaning up trash along the highways near Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Perry stepped those efforts up over the past four months, and has been logging eight-hour days several times a week to clean up the roads.

It's only midway through November, but I felt like taking a moment to take stock of what the year has been for me
So, the "Goods and Bads of my 2023"
This year, I:
Got back into Magic the Gathering after taking a 3 year break, rebuilt my Sigarda, Heron's Grace commander deck and built three new commander decks, Urza, Chief Artificer, Mishra, Eminent One, and Karlach, Fury of Avernus
Wrote over 40,000 words of fanfic, which, while a lot less than the hundreds of thousands I wrote in 2022 and 2021, still leaves me satisfied, and I also finished my longest and most proud of fanfic, "…Burned Brighter Than the Fire Around Me"
Made new friends I'm incredibly thankful for, and ended friendships with people who were toxic, including standing up to and kicking out one friend who decided to become extremely anti-trans masc
Became a minor "celebrity" among right wing news outlets after the (male) owner of a ladies gym kicked me out, and survived having my phone number, private facebook account and home address doxxed
Started a new tutoring job that has left me feeling very fulfilled as an individual
Moved twice, first from Qualicum Beach back to Victoria, finally, and then again within the city to a much better dwelling
Played a small part in an extremely successful counter-protests against an anti trans hate rally
Started working out regularly, and have become more comfortable in and confident about my body
Went on a first date with and became girlfriends with my darling Lily <3
Helped two friends setup and test their own discord servers
Got covid again, but survived, had a period where I was sick for four weeks straight with three alternating illnesses
Started taking micronised progesterone and estrogen patches as part of my hrt regimen
Started diagnosed with ADHD and started taking Vyvanse to manage it
Made butter chicken for the first time which was incredibly delicious
Helped a very dear friend crack her egg fully
Commissioned 19 pieces of art I all love and treasure
Fully maxed out, potentials, level, masteries of Reed, the Flame Shadow
Started (slowly) learning Japanese
Recorded in my daily mood planner that I've had around 63% more suicidal thoughts this year compared to 2022, but also my number of good days has more than doubled
Hacked my switch and have had a blast playing modded Metroid Dread and Fire Emblem Three Houses
Helped a few friends through some incredibly rough patches of their lives
Injured my back shovelling snow back in February, and am still dealing with the extreme pain my injury causes me when I'm on my feet for extended periods
The prior house I was living at was almost broken into twice, and decided to hasten my move as a result
Helped my mom finally break up with her piece of shit husband and had my feelings toward him vindicated as everyone told me just what a scumbag he had been

QUALICUM BEACH — Concerned residents are raising funds to directly support Syrian orphans in dire need.
A church and some local Syrian residents are banding together to raise money for an area hit hard by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Syria and Turkey earlier this month, which has caused incredible destruction and left thousands dead and destitute.
Terry Roberts, Chair of the Ali Al Faraj Refugee Sponsorship Group, said a member of their community and Syrian refugee Samar Al Hbayo, wanted to do something after she heard from family still living in Syria about at least 60 orphaned Syrian children living in camps who desperately needed aid.

Doukhabor Farm, Hilliers Colony near Qualicum Beach, British Columbia, photo not dated. Source “Doukhabor Heritage: Doukhabors in Hillers British Columbia.”
Internet rabbit holes! I used the net to check the spelling of a personal name, Hillier. That led me to Hillier, a place name in British Columbia and then to this fascinating story by a man whose parents, in the 1960s, purchased a property on Vancouver Island once used as a Doukhabor colony. Since childhood I have been fascinated by the Doukhabors, probably because an uncle of mine was warden of the now defunct provincial prison in New Westminster. Many members of the cult were jailed there after nude protests in British Columbia towns, and I learned of their protests through his descriptions. Cut to more than a half century later, we have good friends who reside within spitting distance of the erstwhile settlement, abandoned by the cult in the 1950s. The next time we get to Vancouver Island we must make a visit.
While not as prolific for cults as California has proven to be, odd religious cults have been an element of Pacific Northwest culture almost since European colonization began. The Doukhabors, sometimes called “old believers,” were fairly late arrivals. They were pacifists and did not believe in public education or most of the other aspects of modern government. They were driven out of Russia and were promised a high degree of autonomy in Canada. When they felt the autonomy was being violated they protested with nude parades. Those occurred in BC as late as the 1950s. For much more about the cult and its history, Doukhabor Heritage. is a quite extensive website including some fine old photographs
